Happy Monday, Jumble solvers! The past couple of weeks have been an exciting time for the puzzle as David has been slipping in new clue words left and right. The trend continued this morning with the addition of WOODEN. I didn’t see it right away, partly because of the distancing of the O’s in the layout, but it did come into view after staring at it for a few extra seconds. It wasn’t my pick for the most difficult anagram, though. TENDON earned that distinction for the fact that it fooled me on two different levels. I first tried coupling up the N’s, and when that didn’t work, I tried making words with an -ED suffix. My double whammy was over when I spotted TEN and the answer jumped right off the page. TENDON may have been a new anagram, but it has been used in gameplay before (1/28/12). HOUSE was the most recently used repeat with a date of 2/2/18. My Monday mash-up wouldn’t be complete without a quick rundown of last weeks most difficult words. You all voted for: RUPUSE, CCDIAA, BVAREE, NARACY, NAACLO, WHERDS, and LCCAIO. It was rather fitting that the setting for today’s cartoon was a classoom. Summer vacation in New Hampshire starts on Thursday, and the kids are going bonkers with anticipation! Today’s panel is broken up into two sections with the main action occurring between the four characters in the foreground. The addition of three shaded students in the background was a great touch because Jeff often uses a chalkboard to make use of the extra space. The young girl, identified by the teacher as Violet, can be seen blowing a large bubble with her gum. The teacher was quick to spot the infraction and brings a small trash can to the desk in response. When I was in elementary school, if you were caught chewing gum by the teacher, you’d have to put it on your nose for the rest of the period. It was definitely unsanitary, but the lesson it taught made me never do it again. But times have changed and this teacher thinks a quick tongue lashing will get the point across just as well.

The pictures that the kids were drawing made me think that this might be an art class. The boy on the left is drawing his favorite Marvel superhero, Black Panther, and the child on the right is drawing a unicorn. The claws of Black Panther were intricately drawn, but the unicorn could use some swirls on its’ horn to finish it off. My favorite detail was the look of panic on Violet’s face. Jeff perfectly captured her expression, and the shading on the gum bubble was a fine touch, too.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 12-letters. My eyes were drawn to the C and H which brought CHEW to mind. The rest of the answer flowed naturally based upon the visual evidence in the cartoon. It was definitely an easy Monday solve, but I’m sure we’ll have a more challenging game near the end of the week. Have a marvelous Monday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

    • Good luck, Jamu! Of course I’m hoping for one more game back home for a proper Oracle sendoff, but I hope at least we have a good exciting game.
      (Just a suggestion – if you’re going to type your name in the message body every time anyway, why not type it in the “Name” box so you don’t show up as ‘anonymous’?)

  2. At first I thought that the answer would end with “her wad”, but then I realized there wasn’t an “a” anywhere. Then I finally saw CHEWED, and the rest fell in. I had to back into TENDON.

    I have wondered why teachers were so punitive about chewing gum. I finally decided that they didn’t want the gum stuck under the desks!

    • I see WAD now that you’ve mentioned it, Mike. And what classroom wouldn’t be complete without some gum stuck under the desk? I remember Jeff did a classroom cartoon showing just that. It was a fun detail to find. 🙂

        I was not aware of this place and won’t put it on my bucket list, either. 🤔 I wonder if they use chemicals in aid in the cleanings, or if it’s mainly just scraping.

        • Bucket list? Here in NY we have another list…Think about it…It’s definitely on that one! 😉 Cleaning? God only knows..it didn’t mention anything in the article? They couldn’t pay me enough money…I keep thinking with all that sugar, and moisture..? It must be a mosquitos paradise! ..All new meaning to being “A fly on the wall”, huh! 😂🐝🙋🏻

        • I can see Bottle Caps…they’re not coming out of someone’s mouth! Thousands of “someones” mouths! And at least bottle caps are pretty, (but yes, they can be dangerous to bare feet)…That’s like those Love Lock places I think they’re called? They’re all over the world? I know they’ve become a problem on bridges…people placing locks to profess their love and tossing the keys away? But the gum? That’s definitely the pits…😱🙋🏻

    • Both Mike’s …Along the same line as your comments, there was a (somewhat similarly themed) puzzle and answer back on December 26th, 2015. A teenager spit his GUM out on the sidewalk, and he was…CHEWED OUT. Unfortunately, most city streets in NY are terribly scarred with the black dots.   3. Even though he stepped on a WOODEN peg at his girlfriend’s HOUSE and ruptured a TENDON in his foot, he still has a CRUSH on her.

I guess we’ll just have to take it in STRIDE..I did notice that the little boy in the BIG RED shirt was kind of RAZZLESing the situation by his comment that he told her not to. (Poor VIOLET CHOWARD)! And he seems a little FRESHEN UPpity to the little CHIC..LETS just say he’s TRIDENT to EXCEL with the teacher…ORBIT er..maybe he’s just CHEWSing to be a STARBURST! Kids! 😉🙋🏻

      • Angela! Thank you so much for posting this video! I’ve mentioned before that I enjoy and am intrigued by unusual time signatures in songs (Brubeck “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo”, “The Ocean” and others by Led Zeppelin, “Siberian Khatru” by Yes), but this is the quantum mechanics of time signatures; stuff that I’d never dreamed possible! 😱

You know I don’t post music and a video unless I write the post,…(or unless I’m giving a Shout Out to Paul😉).. but I would have gone with this today if I did. Violet, (even though she’s wearing green..😂!) isn’t the most common of names, and combined with her being a little heavier than the other kids…AND chewing gum..it was the “VIOLET Beauregarde” lyrics that hit home. You know there’s a few others out there too…..Had you never heard the song before? But Steve, as much as we’ve talked music, I really don’t remember having any discussions about time signatures with you…My nephews, yes, but not you…it BEATS me!…And you know I’m big on RHYTHM! 😉 Have a good one, Steve…Stay cool! 😉🙋🏻

  5. Hi all – Interesting that the double letter trick worked for WOODEN but not for TENDON. Thought the answer might be BLEW HER OFF, but some thought and the six letters showed CHEWED.

    I still vote for CALICO as my hardest word last week. Never heard the ‘end of the nose’ trick Mike. All I’ve heard is that if you get caught with candy, you’re supposed to have enough for the whole class. It’s bordering on cruel to keep school in session so late in New England with the summers so short.

    • Mortise and Tendon? 🤦🏻‍♀️ Too funny! And you want to talk cruel? The classrooms of New York City, which all lack air conditioning, keep our kids in attendance until June 26th. Oh, the humanity! 🙄🙋🏻

      • That’s awful. I had it easy; summer was early June until the Wednesday after Labor Day, I think.

These poor kids come out some days looking like wet noodles…It’s always been the end of June here…with a return after Labor Day, usually the Wednesday….And just an FYI…The gum chewing? With the nuns? Most of them made you put it in your hair….It NEVER happened more than once in any class! 😳🙋🏻

    • I wasn’t often a rule breaker, Steve. It only took one time for me to learn my lesson. No child, even the purest of heart and morals, can resist the temptations of Dubble Bubble, though!!!
      The temperatures have been in the low 70’s, so it’s not too bad in the classrooms this year. But it is absolutely cruel on those 80+ days……
      My nephew has been driving me crazy with all of his Bruins talk! He’s blowing up my phone with texts after every goal or incredible save. TWO MORE DAYS!!! 🥴

      • I wonder whether Double Bubble is the brand that had a little folded-up paper cartoon in each wrapper? Or maybe I’m just showing my age again.

        • Steve…In NY we always had the three Mike mentioned plus another called Hubba Bubba. But Bazooka was always the best. . And it’s still around. They stopped the Joe comics about 10 years ago though, maybe a littles less. But “ironically”‘ in the last few weeks they’ve done a Nostalgia Throwback type of thing. Original gum and Joe cartoons. My friend in Indiana bought one, the pieces come in a package. I haven’t seen it, but then again I haven’t looked. He got his in a Krogers, I think he said, which we don’t have here in NY. He said the taste and the cartoons were what he remembered from childhood. He’s in his 50’s…And his uncle, who’s in his 70’s agreed with him…🤔🙋🏻

          • Mike and Angela, thanks for the memories. I must have been a Bazooka person. I hope the new “Throwback” versions aren’t just the result of discovering a couple of lost railroad cars from the 50’s! 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

            • As far as I remember, the whole neighborhood was strictly Bazooka. As for the “new” old Bazooka?😉 I did ask if their teeth were still intact. So far, so good. Nobody’s GUMming anything yet! 😉🙋🏻
