Happy Monday, Jumble friends! David started off the puzzle with a brand new clue word, and I was surprised that it hadn’t been used before. Although SHIRT was easily deciphered, the fact that such a simple and basic word has escaped him for so long reminds me that there are quite a few words that are still available to challenge us for many years to come. The remaining three were legacy favorites with TUEEAQ being the only new anagram. The hardest word for me was PURSUE, and it looks like I’m in good company as early voting in the poll has 32% of you choosing it as well. Our oldest and newest clue words were both used in 2018 and appeared 9 months apart. The pesky PURSUE popped up on January 28th, while the not so elusive EQUATE stopped by on October 28th. Looking back at the poll numbers from last week, you chose CPBUIL, REDAP, LOWDR, TOSHOE, TTUNA, MLIEUH, and CPAINT as the most difficult anagrams. If today was your birthday, then you also share the date with one of the Jumble characters featured in todays cartoon. We see a beautiful illustration of two women, most likely mother and daughter, who have just completed a hike. The cartoon sentence informs us that this is not just a random trek up the side of a mountain, but rather it’s a birthday tradition that the elder woman completes every year. The dialogue gave us a couple additional facts that not only make the cartoon more interesting, but were very useful when it came time to attempt the final solve.
The majority of the panel, approximately two-thirds in my estimation, is taken up by the apex of the summit. We see that the birthday girl ventures almost to the very edge of the ledge and is raising her left hiking pole in a signal of victory. The younger woman places her left hand on the womans right shoulder in a congratulatory fashion, but it also seems as though she’s providing some physical support. Since so much of the frame is taken up by the summit, we don’t get to see much detail of the surrounding area. There are a few trees down below as well as a small stream. My favorite detail was the small bit of tree growing out of the right side of the ledge. It reminded me of old Looney Toons cartoons where the character would jump off the cliff but hang from it in an attempt to escape from their protagonist.
The final solve was an anagram consisting 14-letters which is quite larger than a typical Monday solve. The anagram would be broken up to produce four words of varying lengths. The anagram itself kept the answer well hidden, but it did contain a few unique letters to get me well on my way. The U and P brought UP to mind and the Y had me thinking YEAR. With almost half of the letters crossed out, the rest of the words quickly came into view for the finish. Have a great start to your week, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

(He bought a brand new SHIRT for his, he wanted to look slick).
He tried some of those singles bars, but NOISY as they were,
He couldn’t hear himself think straight…it only did deter.
He’s worried though his chances slim, and it’s part of his fears..
He’d hate to end up all alone, since he’s UP THERE IN YEARS…

Good morning. Guess what today is? No it’s not hump day, which is Wednesday. ! It’s Monday which means ease on in. Don’t think it could have been much easier. I like their thinking that maybe people are hung over from the weekend so they give you simple ones so as not to tax your brain. Dont the guys realize that we are an intellectual group and therefore don’t succumb to alcohol? The cartoon answer was also solved rather quickly, once I put all the letters down. Angela loved the way you used your words. Of the two I smiled a lot on the first one. Until tomorrow stay well.

Mike…Did you notice that Jeff included those retention straps on the older woman’s poles? Great detail. I think a lot of older people find them useful for gripping, and putting less pressure on the wrists…There’s a lot of controversy about them..The pros and cons. IMO, I think just the fact that you needn’t bend down to pick up the stick if it loosens from your grip is benefit enough! 😂 😂 And isn’t it odd that we were just “mountain climbing” last week or so? Pursue had me momentarily stumped as well,but given that solution,the up there in years final solution came quickly.We’re back with 2 of our older grandkids in tow,17,almost 18, yr old Emily,and her 11 yr old brother,Harrison.
Hi all – PURSUE took me the longest after thinking about PURSER, USURP and SUPPER, and I had to verify the spelling to be sure it was right.
The answer took longer than it should have. I immediately thought that she’s getting up in years, but she still has a good OUTLOOK. Crossing out UP IN YEARS left me with THREE, and it took a minute to realize that the word was right THERE before my eyes.
I can assure her that there’s still life at 71 and beyond (or maybe it’s more like a “still life” 😂)
Mike, you brought back good memories with the detail of the little tree sapling sticking out of the cliff! That, and walking off the edge but not falling until you look down. I’ve also been enjoying how you and Angela have been putting a relevant question in the voting poll (like today’s UPHILL BATTLE).
Angela, thanks for the details on the pole straps. I hadn’t heard about them or that there was a discussion, but I agree that if I had to bend down to pick one up, I might not get back up again, especially after a climb like this.
