Happy Thursday, Jumble fans! With only one more puzzle to go before we cross the finish line to the long holiday weekend, David started off his lineup this morning with two brand new clue words to challenge us. WHINY was easy to spot because it was close to being in perfect reverse alphabetical order while ENTRY jumped out at me for no particular reason. The hardest word for me to decipher was HAIRDO so it’ll be my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. It was also our most recently used word with a gameplay date of 2/21/19 while WRITER was last seen on 12/30/18 which made it our oldest.

For many baseball fans, the crack of the bat is the quintessential sound of the sport. The distinct reverberation captures the attention of all the spectators in the stadium, but that noise would never be heard on the afternoon of October 8th, 1956. It was game 5 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pitching for the Yankees was 27-year-old Don Larsen, and he would go on to complete an unthinkable feat that would not only define his career, but be one of only 23 perfect games ever thrown.

Larsen was able to throw a perfect game which is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and no opposing player reaches base. In today’s cartoon, Jumble artist, Jeff Knurek, shows us the moment directly after the last ball was thrown where Yogi Berra rushes the mound and leaps into Larsen’s arms.

The cartoon is a near perfect copy of the original moment and captured every aspect of the emotional embrace between the two players. The dialogue gave us a bit of information about the game, but it didn’t contain any clues that would help us during the final solve.

The final anagram was 14-letters in length and contained two words in quotes which made it tricky to figure out. I noticed that there were duplicates of most of the letters and it made me think that both of the 5-letter words might be the same. Knowing that Larsen was a pitcher lead me to see THREW with AND coming into view next. THREW was right there again in the remaining letters to bring the puzzle to completion.     ° The magazine’s beauty WRITER handed in her ENTRY for the lead story, after deciding to do a piece about the summer’s newest HAIRDO, but the WHINY male editor rejected it saying it wasn’t researched THREW and THREW…and she couldn’t help but wonder if she was being teased…

    ° After finding the old typeWRITER at a flea market, she spent the money that was slotted for her new HAIRDO, only to find herself acting like a WHINY child as she realized she wouldn’t be making such a great first impression with her ENTRY into the party tonight…and chastised herself for not thinking it all THREW and THREW…

  2. Good morning. At first glance nothing came into view so I decided to make my coffee. When I returned, the answers slowly appeared with hairdo taking the longest. Then the cartoon answer had me at first until I arranged the letters in alphabetical order. I realized there were two five letter words and there were five doubles. Using Sherlock Holmes Deduction,I came up with the answer. I remember that game being a Dodger fan and praying in church along with everybody else for Gil Hodges’s to get a hit in the series. Spoiler alert,he never did. I still have the scrap book of that series. Until tomorrow stay well

Spolier Alert…There was a key to the solution….Larsen pitched the Perfect Game…the COMPLETE Game…He played Through and Through all 9 innings…i think it’s a brilliant pun…I wasn’t around back then, but I too have my Father’s scrapbook of the Series…Priceless..Ok, I’m going to put up my post..I hope you enjoy the music…⚾️🙋🏻

    And once again this matchup would put New York on the map…
    It was October 8th, Game 5… Don Larsen took the plate…
    And he made Baseball History, he pitched a game so great.

    No men on base, not seen before…it brought “Gooneybird” fame…
    A Yankee fan whether or not, you gave the man his due…

    • Spoiler alert. Notice the year of that great Platters song (1955). That was the year the Brooklyn Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in a World Series and I finally won twenty five cents from one of my uncles.

      • LOL! Yep, Brooklyn.. I did,,and I was hoping you noticed!! 😂😂 And of course I have the Scrapbook of that Series too! My Father told us that he celebrated for a week! LOL! And I’m sure you didn’t care half as much about that quarter as you did finally “giving it to” the Yankee fan! Am I right?⚾️🙋🏻

      • Being a kid,the quarter was more important. I still have two stubs from being at the Bronx stadium but I glued them into the scrap book along with scotch taping over a dozen dodger autographs to preserve them. After many many years the scotch tape peeled off taking the signature with it. Being a kid who knew.

        • Not just being a Kid, Paul, a lot of people inadvertently wiped away their memories like that. There weren’t that many scrapbooking choices available. My Father has all these tiny pointed like cardboard kind of things that went onto each corner…but most of them are worn away by now. It’s so different today, technology has given us so many new products…I’m so sorry you lost your signatures…you can’t be blamed though…And the quartet, huh? 😉🙋🏻

  4. Good morning, Angela. I couldn’t find a whole lot of wiggle room with these words. The fictional WRITER with the weird HAIRDO, submitted an ENTRY to her boss about a WHINY alien, but he rejected same stating it stunk- THREW AND THREW..

For a minute there I wasn’t sure who the “Charles” was! 😉 I’m loving the weird Hairdo..Well done! 👏🏻👏🏻 .I didn’t have trouble with it in my entries to you and Paul, but getting it to jive with the Baseball theme was a bit of a problem…Some words just don’t fit! ⚾️🙋🏻

  7. HAIRDO gave me trouble again – I had to back in. Larsen said he had a hard time holding Yogi up with all that catcher’s equipment.

    • I heard that too, Caroline…He said it was almost unBERRAble! 😉 You know what CAUGHT my eye this morning, that I really liked about the cartoon? When I was looking at the #8 on Yogi’s back, I couldn’t understand at first why it looked like it was sort of split..and then when I enlarged the panel, I saw that it was the strap from his chest protector going down his back. The smallest detail, but so right on…Gotta hand it to Jeff…he definitely HITS ’em OUT OF THE PARK! Have a good one, Caroline! ⚾️🙋🏻

  8. I miss HAIRDO every time. I am beginning to put the first letter of the clue word in the middle of real word. It goes back to the video Mike linked us to a year ago or so where the man said to make a circle of the letters with the first one in the middle of the circle. I should have done that with HAIRDO and it would have been the third or fourth letter and may have helped.

    • Hi Clay. You’re not alone. The last 2 times out Hairdo caught almost everyone. I think it can be attributed to David’s masterful anagramming. But did you need it to get the solve? Or did you SLIDE right into it? 😉⚾️🙋🏻

I got hairdo right off,but entry gave me reason to pause.But given the answer to entry,the final puzzle solution was a quick solve.Another note on that perfect gme,Dale Mitchell,a former long time Cleveland Indian player,was called out on strikes to end the game on a pitch that could have been called a ball.Then with the final out measured,Yogi ran out and jumped on Larsen’s back,because as Yogi frequently said,” it’s not over until it’s over” and it was over.

  10. Another piece of trivia about Larsen’s perfect game- his wife filed for divorce on the same day as his Perfecto.

  12. Hi all – I only saw HAIRDO quickly because I’ve had trouble with it so often in the past. Then ENTRY took an extra look, but putting the Y at the end showed this and WHINY. I was slowed down by trying THE as the middle answer word. Then tried AND, figured the other two words were duplicates, and saw it.

    I have a memory of coming home from school and seeing the end of this perfect game. They say you can’t trust early memories, but I’m going to look up the game time, and if it’s around 3 or 4 PM Eastern, I’ll be pretty convinced it’s true.
