Good Monday morning, everyone! It was an easy start to the week with all of our clue words having been used before. I thought QUALM was going to be a brand new word, but a search of the archives found that David used it over 5 years ago on 11/30/13. It was pretty easy to unmask because of the oddball “Q” at the end of the layout, but since it was used such a long time ago, it’ll pull double duty as the oldest word of the day and my most difficult anagram. ZIPPER ended up being our most recently used word and it was jumbled the exact way we saw it this morning on 9/17/18.

Our cartoon brings us to a club where we see a band performing on stage. Jeff surely outdid himself by drawing a total of 9 different characters, but he made it quite obvious who our attention should be focused on by placing the piano smack-dab in the middle of the panel. A quick read of the sentence identified the pianist as Count Basie and the four other musicians would later be identified as members of the “Count Basie Orchestra”.

William James Basie was born on August 21, 1904 in Red Bank, New Jersey. Both of his parents were musically inclined with his father playing the mellophone (think French horn), while his mother played the piano. She gave the young Basie his first piano lessons and would later pay for more professional instruction at the cost of 25 cents per lesson.

At the age of 15, Basie moved to Harlem which was the hotbed of jazz at the time. He made friends with other musicians who were making the scene and eventually toured in several acts for many years. In 1937, his career would blossom and his orchestra would perform regularly at the Woodside Hotel in Harlem. He would go on to perform for audiences in several other New York City locations before moving on to tour in Boston, Los Angeles and eventually Chicago where he would make his first recording.

Basie created innovations such as the use of “split” tenor saxopohnes. I noticed that Jeff included two men playing the saxophone in his cartoon and couldn’t help but wonder if he was drawing caricatures of Lester Young and Herschel Evans who were prominent members of the Count Basie Orchestra.

With all of the Basie background out of the way, I remembered that I overlooked one important detail. Are you wondering how he got his nickname? The Count would recount in an interview later in his career that it happened in 1936 at the Reno Club in Kansas City. An announcer was going to introduce him but told him beforehand that Bill Basie was an ordinary name. He said “Bill, I’ll call you Count Basie from now on. Is that all right with you?” Basie thought he was joking but and replied “OK.” The name stuck and the rest is history!

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 8-letters. No matter how hard David may have tried, there was no way of hiding those Z’s! The J brought JAZZ to mind leaving UP and the -ED suffix for a quick finish. Monday’s games are usually easy on the noggin, so I’m glad Jeff gave us interesting subject matter in his cartoon to make the puzzle last a bit longer.   1. Good morning. I have no QUALM about putting a ZIPPER on the ZODIAC JOKER because of his Pottsy mouth. Believe me,this joker was no joke. No problem with our Monday jumble. I gave a nod for Zodiac as the harder word because it did take me an extra look to solve. The cartoon answer came immediately once I saw the “Zs”. That man could always jazz up the audience. Until tomorrow stay well.

    ° At first JAZZED UP about the new relationship, he slowly began having a QUALM or two, realizing that she was no JOKER when it came to her obsession with horoscopes and the ZODIAC…but for now he decided to keep a ZIPPER on his lips…

    ° Assigned to research murderers…he looked into Bram Stoker,
    His Dracula had come to mind…that vampire no JOKER…
    The ZODIAC killer, Son of Sam, and of course…Jack the Ripper
    He felt a chill run through him, as he raised his sweater’s ZIPPER.
    He thought he’d have no QUALM with this, just take it all in stride…
    But deeper as he got involved he just couldn’t abide.
    He felt his pressure rising…soon he’d need another checkup,
    And doubts he’ll pass this horrid course…there’s no way he’ll get
    JAZZED UP…

      • Good Morning, Mike. Great Basie bio information👏🏻👏🏻…But you know what struck a CHORD with me? Knowing that we can COUNT on Jeff for at least one little piece of eye candy, you know what caught mine? The candle holder on the table of the couple at front. I’m pretty sure that back then in the 30’s and 40’s they didn’t make holders of those kind, with the outside netting. They usually had small votive candles in plain glass holders, or the tealight kind in the candlestick types. But I could be wrong tho…and then I’d gladly change my TUNE…I tried looking it up, but I had to SWING over to something else…But I’ll look again later, after I finish ORCHESTRATING my schedule for today! Here’s to a good one! 🎹🙋🏻

      I was trying to come up with a sentence where the ZODIAC killer and the JOKER were doing something with a ZIPPER without being too graphic for Monday morning sensibilities, but you beat me to it!

      • LOL..I too kept getting caught up in the ZIPPER! 😂 And there’s really not much elbow room at all with ZODIAC either…Altho I did take poetic license in my Count Basie poem…So like you, I didn’t want to push the envelope too far…and just settled on Serial Killers! 😂😂 Actually, I went more in that direction once I realized that Bram Stoker worked so well with JOKER! 😂 Word play…it’s an amazing thing!   4. In northern California, the ZODIAC killer didn’t have a single QUALM about being labeled a JOKER when he mailed a ZIPPER hooded jacket to one of the police departments which was hunting him.

  5. Definitely an easy Monday puzzle.I fell I love with the Frank Sinatra recordings with the Count Basie orchestra and arrangements by Nelson Riddle in the 60’s.

  8. Wow 2 Z’s a J and a K in the anagrams today. In spite of that it was an easy puzzle. I can assure you that the Zodiac Killer was no joke for those of us who live in the Bay Area. He taunted the local newspapers, may have killed as many as 28 people and was never caught. It was a very scary time.

    • Hi Betty. Good Morning. Please know that I meant no harm in using the name of the Zodiac Killer, nor would I ever take something as horrid as serial killing lightly. I would hope that after all this time you know me better than that. You can see where I used the name in my poem, that I used it in reference to a man being sickened by having to study him. But I can see where my comments to Mike M and Chuck may seem insensitive. Please be assured it was just in keeping with the ability to make a vialble sentence from today’s words. I’m sorry if I offended you, Betty, or any of our readers, and you have my sincerest apology. 😔🙋🏻

      • Oh good heavens no, Angela I certainly didn’t take offense and it was a logical comment based on the word choices. Many people don’t really know the details of that awful time in our local history. I can’t see the word Zodiac without thinking of him. I do always enjoy your clever analyses of the topic at hand and I do appreciate your sense of humor.

        • Thank you Betty. Because trust me, I’d soon as give this all up if I thought I had hurt anyone’s feelings. I do fear that sometimes I may tend to go too far…all in fun of course, but still. And I can appreciate your feelings towards the cretin, since the Son of Sam put the same fear into us here in NY back in the summer of ’76. One never forgets. So, I’m glad we’re ok.   9. Okay, that’s just weird. Now the Uclick has it in color. I tried several sites earlier this morning and it was in black and white on all of the versions I saw. I go back to it now and sure enough, it’s in color. I think the newspapers carrying Jumble are messing with us lately!

  10. Hi all – Usually a Z gives a word away, but I did have to look a couple of times to see ZODIAC. The two Z’s made JAZZ in the answer obvious.

    I found two things interesting. One is that I can’t remember hearing QUALM as a singular; maybe that’s when you only have one quick pang of conscience.
    The second was that the drummer doesn’t appear to have any cymbals.
