🎣 Some people do get NUTTY about their favorite spots…
They fish for years and know just where the fish are really hot.
If you’re one who enjoys the GOING out to catch some fish..
You probably have a special place where you don’t have to wish…
You gather all your gear and FASTEN it all to your boat,
And hope you don’t encounter any LICHEN in the float…
You get out on the water…and hope your bait will be bit…
And lucky you if you can say..”Yes I CAUGHT “SITE OF IT”🎣

As another Jumble work week comes to a close, David may have given us a new word. FASTEN. Seemingly such a common one, I thought for sure it would be in the Archives, but all I CAUGHT was this…not the word itself. But somehow I wonder how we haven’t seen it before…FASTENating…Well, I’m not GOING to continue CARPing on it…Moving on…Ah, Lichen! While I’m lichen LICHEN, I have to say that it wasn’t LICHEN the Early Birds all that much. Of the 11 of them, 6 were HOOKED, and SANK…And despite the LINE or two I offered to KELP them out? They still FLOUNDERed…And it was even heard on Jeopardy last night…”What is LICHEN”... But, it stumped them. But for some reason, it seemed “Jumble” familiar too, and I did find this from almost 2 years ago. But the word itself goes way way back to May 19th, 2008, and August 20th, 2009. Now how’s that for Golden Oldies? And as for our other two words, they both last appeared in 2018, with NUTTY coming in as our newest, on August 22nd. Ok…enough aBOAT our words…let’s SET OUR SITES on our cartoon…

As any friend of the Jumble knows, FISH-TAILS are a pretty common SITE around here. In fact, quite recently, we had back-to-back puzzles dealing with FISH. April 17th and 18th to be exact. And yet here we are again today, CATCHING another one! Not that there’s anything wrong with that! We’re easy here, we GO WITH THE FLOW...So, finding ourselves out on a lake somewhere, we see a couple in a small motorized rowboat searching for the perfect SPOT to PERCH themselves…I’ll call them BILL FISH, and his wife, BARB. For those not familiar with FISHING, our question points out that Bill is an ANGLER, which means he’s fishing with a rod and a line. And from the LINES of dialogue, it seems that they may have been searching for quite a while. Barb mentions that they almost passed it…Bill’s “There“!, with its exclamation point, and the somewhat angry look on his face, indicated by his furrowed brow, leads me to believe that when he finally CAUGHT sight of his favorite SPOT, it was a SITE for sore eyes! So, in answer to our question…He knew the moment he…CAUGHT “SITE” OF IT! Good one, David! You’ve thrown us quite a LINE!

Ok, eye candy…The blue of the water completely shades the panel beyond the boat. Off in the background we can see a darkened ROW of pine trees, and some reeds. Barb’s pink cap depicts an open-mouth BASS, just about to get LUREd in for the CATCH. Bill’s wearing a brown fishing hat, complete with the requisite (green) lure attached. His right hand can be seen on the motor’s tiller, which is why we see his rod lying next to Barb on the floor of the boat…But what’s JUMPING out at me? Off in the background, right between the two old stumps? A JUMPING wide-mouth BASS…And that’s what Bill CAUGHT SITE of too! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember….Don’t WADE around in life for things to come to you…Get out there and fulfill your own FISHES! CARPe Diem!…SEAS the day! 🎣🚣 🙋🏻

  1. I know it doesn’t fit the pattern, but I note that the letters also spell GOTTA CUTIE FISH. I hope he did catch that fish.

  2. This jumble puzzle has gotten off the track. It’s not fun anymore. I have to read the authors mind. Let’s go back to common sense.

But as you can see from David Hoyt’s comment below, he didn’t mean for it to ruffle so many feathers! But, here’s to a good day, 🍷, despite your not LICHEN the word! 😉🙋🏻

      • You can’t unscramble a word that you didn’t know existed. And it was by far the toughest word (82%) in a long time.

I feel like LICHEN is a common word (maybe because I love trees so much and have lichen growing all over the huge oak tree in the backyard)…But I was curious about before using it so I ran it by my usual test group of about 15 people at the Red Lion Lincoln Square pub and every one of them knew the definition and how to spell it correctly. So I decided to use it based on that feedback. But maybe it’s not as common as I thought based on my test group here. All well. Another great example of what’s common to some, isn’t common to others. If you want to have a vote for removing it from the list, that would be cool with me. My Red Lion Lincoln Square pub test group voted it in, but I’m happy to take it out if you want to have a vote and it gets voted out.

    • Good Morning, David. Of all days that I’m running horribly behind schedule…I just realized that I left out my usual daily poem using your words..,And I had fun with LICHEN! Although I may have to alter it now, beMOSS of all the controversy it’s causing! Personally, I’m LICHEN the word, but that’s just me…Let’s see what happens as the day progresses…Stay tuned! 🙋🏻

      • I Facebook messaged a number of Jumble solvers and some others earlier this morning and so far everyone has replied saying they knew the word LICHEN and its meaning (basically moss that grows on trees). I’m not seeing a problem with using LICHEN on a Friday since Friday puzzles are supposed to be more difficult. But, as I said, I’m totally open to a vote to keep it in the database or to boot it out. I’m always trying to become a better puzzle maker and the more feedback I get, the better.

        • David…I’m sure I’m not the best one to go by, because I also know the word. Have I used it in conversation at the last cocktail party I attended? Well no, but then again I haven’t spoken of a Monkey lately either! 😉 Please don’t stress…it’s just one word out of so many that you’ve given us…And a challenge is just that…a challenge.       • I had no difficulty solving the jumbled words. I did perseverate over the answer to the puzzlel. I love doing the Daily Jumble! I am a retired reading teacher. The puzzle is excellent “Exercise for my Brain.

And despite all our good-natured punning and overall fun, we do take the game seriously. Today was an exceptional day. That one simple word caused quite an uproar. And I guess it came down to simply knowing the word or not. But I have a feeling that after today, it will be well remembered! 😂 I applaud you your profession.   7. Good morning. David who ever said You can’t teach an old dog new tricks is wrong. I’m one for leaving it in although I had no idea of its spelling or meaning. I vote to continue what your doing. I look forward to learning something new everyday. Why is it when something is not liked, people we never heard before or incognito,come out of the woodwork Angela,I’ll read you after this. Wanted to back the big man up. I naturally was stumped on LICHEN but breezed right through the other three words and was able to solve the cartoon answer after awhile. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Thanks Paul! I started out as a landscaper and worked at plant nursery in my teens. That certainly put the LICHEN in my vocabulary as a very early age.

    • Thanks Chuck! I get e-mails all the time from people saying a puzzle is too hard and another person saying it’s too easy…And they’re talking about the same puzzle. It’s very tricky to find that perfect sweet spot all the time but I certainly try hard to create puzzle that can be solved by a majority of players. Thank you so much for playing Jumble and for giving me and Jeff such fun jobs. We feel very fortunate to be able to do what we do for a living.

  10. Good morning. Can’t believe it. I thought I sent what I wrote but can’t find it anywhere. Angela,I’ll read you later. I want to back up the man. David,whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks is wrong. I’m for leaving it in although I never saw that word or knew it’s meaning. I vote to continue what you are doing. I look forward to learning something new everyday. Why is it when something is not liked,people we rarely see or are anonymous come out of the woodwork. The words today was a breeze except for LICHEN. I’m sure that word will be voted the hardest one. The cartoon answer was solved after finding caught for the first word. Playing around with the rest of the letters lead to its conclusion. Until tomorrow stay well.

  11. Hey Angela…I just remembered something. I seem to recall a Jumble from a few years ago where the final answer was “LICHEN” IT. Is it just my imagination? I remember thinking of it and picturing it in my head, but I can’t recall if we actually turned it into a actual Jumble or not. Strange that I’m just not certain. I’m busy today making puzzles or I’d try to look it up. Just curious if you remember that puzzle?

    • Hey David, Yes! I do remember!. In fact I included my thoughts on remembering it in my post, and even included a link to the day, July 28th, 2017. But I just looked, and the link was corrupt. I corrected it in the post, but here it is again. For some reason, the puzzle stuck in my head…I also noted that you’ve used the word itself before, twice…on May 19th, 2008, and again on August 20th, 2009. Hope this helps….🙋🏻

    The uproar over lichen is surprising; it really isn’t so obscure or you must have quite the erudite group at the pub! I vote to leave it in the database, since it IS a bit more challenging. Besides sometimes the most innocuous, “ordinary” word can prove to be the most vexing one of the day, so the perceived difficulty can be dependent on many factors. Keep up the good work and continue to help America improve its collective vocabulary!

  13. I do know the word lichen though it didn’t come to mind immediately. Personally I enjoy the challenge when I can’t figure out a word right away. I have to scrutinize the puzzle picture, dialogue clues, and work with whatever letters I already have already discovered. I am always very happy when I finally arrive at the answers though it may take awhile. Keep up the good work.

  14. Nice song choice Angela. That is why I say it’s a Woman’s World. The guys are always thinking of fringe benefits,while the ladies are content with just company. Shades of Jerry Seinfeld and Elaine in their skit or the movie with Meg Ryan. Quick note. The word LICHEN is close to the German word LIEBCHEN which means Sweetheart. Even though my wife was Italian,it’s what I called her everyday.

Maybe, but we’re all in it together…and I always thought you guys kind of got a raw deal with Eve and the Apple and all…but..it is what it is, right? 😉 And it’s not that we women dislike the ” fringe benefits” so to speak, Au contraire, mon Frere….(Personally I’m wayyyy big on the “fringe benefits”)! ..it’s just that there’s a time and a place for everything…And sometimes we all need to just Shut up and Fish! 😂 I’m glad you enjoyed my song..Maddie and Tae have some REELy nice music out there…As for LICHEN? When I first saw the word, I pronounced it as LICH-en as in Rich-en. I went by the spelling, and I thought it was an interesting word. Later, after I looked it up, I liked it even more. In fact, if I remember correctly, that’s how the British pronounce it. Like richen, kitchen…And yes, I know about the German word.   15. Hi all – First things first – I gave up. Couldn’t get the third word, so didn’t have enough letters to back into the answer. Figured “ON IT” or “AT IT” would be at the end, but my guesses didn’t fit – COVE, BOAT, GOT WIND OF IT, CAST EYES ON IT, etc. Glad I don’t have to post the answers for the blog!

    Maybe there are just too many city slickers out there who don’t get out in nature and therefore have never heard of LICHEN. It’s not that uncommon (just like FEDORA wasn’t), and I have no problem with the word being included. I remember it from Junior High School biology, along with MOSS.

    Mr Hoyt, I also wanted to mention to the folks here that you had made Doris Day the subject of the free Daily Puzzle on Word Search World Traveller the other day. Nice timely tribute!

    I know LICHEN, though it took me by far the longest to figure out. I usually solve the clue words, but sometimes I don’t get the cultural references, like Barcalounger. But I don’t mind being stumped occasionally and am happy to learn a new thing. It’s pretty amazing that David and Jeff are able to create a daily puzzle that so many people are able to enjoy.

    • Hi Caroline. I remember the Barcalounger! That did stump a few people…And you’re definitely right. There are cultural and maybe even regional references/differences, as Steve also mentioned, that probably get in the way…Yet I agree wholeheartedly that learning something new and being challenged is all part of the game. But I can also understand that not recognizing a word that may prove solving the puzzle impossible, can be very frustrating. And the poll numbers are almost at 400 for Lichen…so it must have ruffled quite a lot of feathers…As for David and Jeff?   19. My 2 cents: the pun on site and sight has nothing in common with the idea of the puzzle. Whenever I see a word in quotes I expect it to be a clever insight into the solution.
