Happy new clue word Monday, everyone! A few weeks ago, Jumble Wordsmith extraordinaire, David L. Hoyt, dropped by to let us know that he’d be slowly adding new words to the puzzle. Today we see POWER making its debut into gameplay, and it’s such a common word that I’d have sworn we’ve seen it before. Even though all of today’s anagrams were new, none of them were overly challenging. They were so easy in fact that I was able to decipher them all upon first glance. STICKY was our most recent repeat (8/29/18) while BRIGHT was the oldest (12/4/17).

Our cartoon transports us to a machine shop where we encounter five Jumble characters. The sentence informs us that a movie is being filmed at this particular location, but there seems to be a pause in the action. The director in the rear of the panel informs the cast that he wants them to act busy, but one of the actors questions his vision. It seems that this drill-pressing diva wants to know the source of his motivation so he can give the scene an authentic feel.

The other two characters on the set don’t seem to mind the interruption, and the female on the left actually looks amused by the back and forth. It was at this point that I took a moment to look at both of their faces and was surprised to discover that they look an awful lot like David L. Hoyt and his wife Claire! David was the gentleman wearing protective eyewear while Claire had her hat on backwards.

The extra details in the panel were the key to figuring out the final solution. On the workbench we see an assortment of drill BITS, and a larger one was in the hand of one of the cast members. Jeff also added some light reflector panels in the background along with a movie camera for some realism. What seemed odd was that none of the machines had power cords. But then I realized that these machines are just movie props so they didn’t necessarily have to be functional.

The anagram for the final solution consisted of 8-letters that would solve into two words. The layout kept the answer well hidden, but it was easy to decipher based upon the limited amount of letters. I was instantly able to see PARTS leaving BITS for the finish. Another easy Monday solve, but it was a blast to see David and Claire this morning! Have a terrific start to your week, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

    ° After becoming so complacent, and settling for whatever BIT PARTS she threw him, he now didn’t want to ADMIT that things got STICKY, and having lost all POWER in this relationship, the future wasn’t looking too BRIGHT…

    🔩 His drill needed improvement…things weren’t running well
    He needed to ADMIT that STICKY parts just wouldn’t sell…
    The POWER kept on waning, things wouldn’t be too BRIGHT
    If he was forced to work like this each day and every night…
    He’d hate to spend the money…a drill costs off the charts
    But maybe he could just get by with getting some BIT PARTS…🔩

  3. The cartoon answer is a little obscure. To me BIT PARTS doesn’t seem to fit that well. There are numerous other solutions most of which fit worse than BIT PARTS, including BIT STRAP, BAT STRIP, and especially PIT BRATS, as I can imagine these are a bunch of brats in the pit of a theater or concert hall.

    • Hi Jim. Good Morning. Actually, it’s not obscure at all. Maybe you need to enlarge the cartoon to see all the Drill “BITS”…on each of the 3 machines, in the actor at front’s hand, and on the table next to him…And also note the question stating that it’s being filmed in a “MACHINE Shop”. BITS and PARTS (roles)…I think it’s PUNderful! 😉🙋🏻

  4. Good morning. Angela loved both of your sentences with the use of the words and that is the song I was talking about. Thanks for taking the time to find it. Now that you have,I would definitely say Connie’s is better. Although watching the film and seeing the play with the song was memorable. Today’s jumble was our average Monday solve. No problem with either the words or cartoon answer. Until tomorrow stay well.

I just didn’t have the heart to go looking for “Mother” related things last night…Make you laugh…The reason I remembered it? My Father 💔 was still alive then. He made a point of telling us kids that the song was a Neopolitan one…(which we are), and it held all the beauty and passion of the Neopolitans! 😂😂 Stayed with me all these years! But you’re right, it was a memorable scene…with the gun and all..the drama…and I could very well understand the man’s heartache and despair. As for Connie’s rendition of the “other” 😉 song, 🎶Mama🎶? IMO? Hands down a one and only…Have a good one, Brooklyn…🙋🏻

  5. All 4 anagrams were an instant solve as was the bit parts solution.Doing the puzzle online it was difficult to see the machines and drills,but the solution was a quick solve.I’m still on the road until mid week so had to access the puzzle online instead of with a real paper.

    I struggled with ADMIT until I realized that I needed two vowels for the answer and that a and i had to go in the circles. I didn’t grasp everything that was going on in the picture, but I managed to get the answer anyway.

  8. The POWER mogul had to ADMIT that the STICKY situation in which he is involved, doesn’t hold much of a BRIGHT outcome for him. Good morning, Angela. DD was always one of my favorites!

    • Hi Chuck.. Good Morning. Well done, Sir! Great take on POWER Mogul! 👏🏻👏🏻 Kudos! Miss Day was a big favorite of my Mom’s too. She and my Grandmother would use this phrase attributed to her quite often with us kids, in answer to a lot of questions… A lot..I think they used it as a scapegoat to dealing with us all! 😂 I hope you enjoy this Miss Doris Day. May you rest in peace..l🙏🏻🙋🏻

      • Concidentally, Stanford Theater is running a Doris Day festival in Palo Alto through May 23. From Mick LaSalle’s note in the Chronicle:

  9. Hi all – The GHT gave away RIGHT and led to BRIGHT, and STICKY took an extra look. I had to go online to see that they were using drill presses and then thought DRILL might be an answer word, but then BIT PART jumped right out.
