Happy Thursday, Jumble friends! Just when you thought my cod-awful fish puns were over and done with, we find our catch of the day featuring another fish themed cartoon that left me bream-ing with ideas. Oh the hu-manatee!!! I promise to scale them way back though and stick to the solve so as not to skate on thin ice with you.

All of our words were familiar old favorites. Maybe I should start calling them lega-sea words? Sorry, I couldn’t help myself with that one! All of the anagrams were new, but unlike yesterday, none of them caused me any hesitation. CASHEW has stumped me in the past so I’ll make it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. It also doubled as our most recently used word (3/10/19) while STUFFY clocked in as the oldest (12/24/17).

If you remember back to yesterday’s cartoon you might recall me mentioning that Leslie Odom Jr. was fishing with a lure. I failed to mention that the lure had a distinct face on it, but as soon as I saw today’s panel I knew that we were looking at the exact same one. Our Jumble characters for today are in fish-form and we see one of them tempted to take a bite of that scary looking lure. The larger, and no doubt wiser of the two tells the little guy to curb his appetite unless he wants to be on the menu this evening.

The panel featured a few striking details worth noting. I also mentioned yesterday that there were four cattails at the edge of the water and if you look closely at the top left of the panel you’ll see them once again! The weeds swaying in the water were pretty cool too, but my favorite detail was the old can that was partially buried. The gravelly bottom obscures some of the letters from view, but it appears to be an old can of Billy Beer!

The final answer was an anagram consisting of 14-letters that would solve into four words. The anagram itself was well thought out and kept all of the words well hidden. The cartoon mentioned “smart bass” which made me think of FISH. With those letters crossed out, WATER popped into view leaving OUT and OF for the finish. It wasn’t as difficult as yesterday’s answer, but it was still a stinker of a pun. Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

  1. Good Morning, Mike. Good Morning, Everyone…If we get one more same themed puzzle tomorrow..we may have enough to dub them FISH TAILS! 🎣🙋🏻

      • I hope not! 😉 I’m dying to make a FRY Day joke, but since tomorrow’s Good Friday, I don’t want to be irreverent…🤔🙋🏻

    • “ ‘Fish Tales’ is a fishing-themed pinball game released by Williams in 1992. It is one of the top 20 most produced pinball machines of all time, selling more than 13,000 units.” 🙋🏻‍♂️

  2. Shout Out to Clay…I LOL’ed when I saw our solution this morning, after telling you yesterday that some days we’re totally FISH OUT OF WATER! 🎣🙋🏻

    • Yes, you most certainly did. Amazing! So after a week of Uclick (I know you can’t see it) showing the Robert Frost puzzle, today it had the right clue words but the pic was a giant magnification of the top left edge of the puzzle picture. Just part of the line that has the lure on it! Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday today!

      • Maybe not so amazing though, because I use the phrase all the time! But my timing was impeccable, right? 😉 The UClick. The alLURE, huh? The other day, maybe Tuesday, after someone else mentioned it here, I looked at the Jumble website itself. They had a disclaimer there saying that they knew the puzzles weren’t updating and that they were working on it. It’s happening on a few sites. But at least the saving grace is that you can view the puzzle on the sites that we use for the magnification. But I guess you like “playing” it, huh? You know I think there’s one other site that I’ve seen that offers it that way…and I’ll take a look for you…Yes, today is Holy Thursday…Maundy…I haven’t heard it said that way in years. I remember it from Latin classes. Mandatum, commandment I think.. But I don’t remember the story behind it. Maybe if I get a chance I’ll look it up. Right now I’m prepping to get elbow deep in making Pizza Rusticas for the second day. Are you familiar with them? The cholesterol laden Italian treasure? Thank God my family only indulges at Easter. If you don’t know what it is, give Google a look…I feel my arteries closing just thinking about it! 😉 I’ll drop you a line 😉 on the other site that offers the interactive puzzle…Hang in there! 🎣🙋🏻

      • Now you’ve given me today’s earworm:
        🎵”Maundy, Maundy, can’t trust that day…🎵

      • I’ve never heard of this chain..you learn something every day! But no, not even close. Pizza just means pie…but this isn’t “pizza” …Pizza won’t kill you…Long term, this “pie” will! 😂 It translates to a “Rustic Pie”..probably because it contains everything but the kitchen sink! I just grabbed the first one I saw on line…it shows what it looks like, and mentions some of the ingredients…It’s delicious, but totally, totally decadent…And the funny part is….It’s served as an appetizer! An appetizer! There’s no end to the madness!!!! ….Anyway, we’re on hold, because we got involved in the Mueller Report coverage….which is also causing my arteries to close…😱 Did the link I sent you work? Is it similar to Uclick? 🙋🏻

      • Ah, that’s the one, Adobe Shockwave. Safari, which is offered on iPads and IPhones doesn’t support any kind of plug ins, so I can’t get to any of that. 😔🙋🏻

      • No, I’m sorry, I wasn’t clear. I meant what did you think of “my” Pizza Rustica from the link I sent? 🤔🙋🏻

    • Oh sorry, never seen anything like it…a deep dish pizza on steroids or an upside down lasagna cake. Very interesting! Too rich for me I’m afraid, which is what you were saying about it. Small portions are in order!!

  3. Tomorrow is the last Friday fish fry at our Catholic Church, so today’s Jumble is very appropriate!!

  4. Good morning. Thanks Mike for all the hidden treasures. I suspect that Billy Beer would be nice and cold but I gave all the good stuff up for lent but,Sunday I would be willing to have it. I was stuck for the longest time on CASHEW. That answer was rolling around in my head until it finally clicked. The cartoon answer was an instant read. It was confirmed when I started to remove the letters for each word. Until tomorrow stay well.

  5. Didn’t cut bait early today. Words solved on the first pass and the puzzle on the second!

  6. Indeed after growing up in the Catholic Church with meatless Fridays all year long, living through Lenten meatless Fridays is no problem. As far as today’s puzzle, cashew got me and I had to back into that after getting the ” fish out of water” solution.

  7. Chuck…Just in case you’re out there….I’m BAITING you…😉🎣🙋🏻

° New to the process, and feeling like FISH OUT OF WATER, they were concerned about the room being so STUFFY, and worried that they might have a ROUGH time with the calibration of the CASHEW nuts and possibly risk a TOXIN problem…

  8. Hi all – ‘GH’ went together for ROUGH, Y at the end and double letter gave most of STUFFY, and I again had to write the letters for CASHEW. Also had to write the letters for the answer, but saw FISH which gave it away.

If there is a fish puzzle tomorrow, I’ll consider it a sign and head down to Fry’s Electronics to check out their deals.

Mike, gotta hand it to you for “hu-manatee”! Made me laugh out loud; best pun I’ve heard in awhile. Enjoy your weekend!

I thought that a can of Billy Beer would be in a lot worse shape than this after all those years under water.

You’d think a fishing lure would have a friendly inviting face, not that scary one. Because of my brother’s aviation knowledge, that face reminds me of the airplanes of Claire Chennault’s “Flying Tiger” squadron in China in WWII.

    Have a great day, everyone!

  9. Thought for the day:

A tough old fish was he,
A rough and tumble vet of the sea,
    Evading hooks of every ilk
Slithering and sliding, smooth as silk,
He set an example and was quick to eschew
Baits of all kind including a cashew,
He’d rather swim a stuffy sea of toxin
Then land up mistaken for lox n bagel
