Happy Wednesday, everyone! Whale it looks like the easy puzzles have drifted out to sea as David and Jeff offered up a brilliant midweek stumper that was a reel pain in the bass!!! All of our clue words were old favorites from 2018, but their anagrams were fresh and new. ENZYME took the longest for me to decipher and I had to mullet over for several minutes. Even though it had disstink letters like Z and Y, it was the doubeel E’s that caused me to flounder. I figured that David wouldn’t leave them coupled together in both the anagram and its solution so I broke them up and the answer became visible after a few self-jumbles. It was only fitting that TARDY was our oldest clue word for today (3/29/18) while the divine ENZYME jumble was our most reefcent (12/9/18).

Wading our way over to the cartoon, we happen upon two oddly-attired gentlemen that are enjoying a bit of fishing. By reading the cartoon sentence we learn that they’re actually actors in costume and not just obsessed with clothing from the 1700’s. Looking closely at their faces, I believe that Jeff surpised us with caricatures of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. from the Broadway musical Hamilton.

Their dialogue suggests that they’re both taking some time off to unwind from the pressures of acting and are enjoying some piece and quiet on mother natures stage. Miranda seems to have spotted something lurking in the depths just beyond the pier and we see his bobber gently swaying in the water. Odom has decided to fish with a lure and we see the motion lines around his pole that seem to indicate that he’s preparing to cast his line. Two fun details stood out in the panel which were a couple of small fish swimming just below the surface of the water near the pier and four cattails at the edge of the water in the background.

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 11-letters and would solve into two words. David gave us a spectacularly cryptic Jumble that gave nothing away and the cartoon didn’t help me much either. Today was the sort of day where I can’t definitively describe how I arrived at the solution. It was LOTS of trial and error and making different letter combinations to form small words. I can tell you that once I found CAST, the rest of the solution came rather quickly because of the double M’s. Have a wonderful Wednesday, my friends, and tank cod this puzzle is over!

  1. Good morning. Total collapse today. I was stuck on ENZYME and caved in and looked for the answer besides throwing in the towel on the cartoon answer. The good news out of total failure is that it starts all over again tomorrow. Not total failure I hope. Until then,take care.

    ° Working late in the CAMPUS lab, trying to blend one ENZYME into another, the BRASH young student ended up being TARDY for rehearsal, and the other CAST MEMBERS were not amused..

    ° I like to do my laundry chores with Tide, and I’ll explain,
    ‘Cause even in cold water, there’s an ENZYME for the stains.
    So even if you’re TARDY and don’t get to pre-soak clothes,
    You needn’t have to worry, there won’t be those laundry woes…
    Detergent BRASH and out to get the odors and the germs,
    I’m all for less bacteria…on CAMPUS this I learned.
    And Tide was all the rage the last time much to my dismay,
    That I was charged with doing laundry for the kids school play…
    A story of a camping ground complete with burning embers?
    Was not for Tide the stench of smoke would still be on CAST MEMBERS!

  3. …Today, it seems we have a case of Art imitating Art, imitating Life…Jeff’s set the STAGE for us at the WEEHAWKEN, NJ, Waterfront, c1803-4, and given us a PLAY on Lin Manuel-Miranda as (Alexander) HAMILTON, (from the Broadway HIT of the same name), and his CAST-mate, Leslie Odom, Jr, as AARON BURR. We see them CASTING their LINES in the Hudson River. But it doesn’t look like these Founding Fathers are finding a WAY TO GET ALONG with it… They’re not exactly KILLING it out there…This “Dynamic DUEL” looks like they couldn’t SHOOT Fish in a BARREL. Although it does appear that Burr is in a better POSITION to do DAMAGE, attracting some SUPPORT from the two Fish that we see IN HIS CORNER, despite Hamilton seeming to be AIMING higher…And I know for a fact, that Hamilton claimed that he had one previous “honor dispute” with Burr, while Burr stated that there were the TWO. So who’s REELy telling the truth here, and who is the better Politician, I mean Fisherman? Hamilton, well-known to DROP A FEW LINES, is shown with that red FLOATER attached to his HOOK…he did carry some WEIGHT…And those Cat-tails off to the left? Considering where we are…that’s aMAIZEing! But History does tell us that it was Burr’s idea to LURE Hamilton out there, and that Hamilton did TREASURE his pride, and take the BAIT…And we do know that CAST Mates can make for strange bedfellows. We also know that this type of DUEL Fishing was outlawed around these parts before 1804. And doesn’t it look like Hamilton definitely SHOT his line ABOVE BURR’S HEAD? It’s almost MURDER trying to make sense of this all, REELy…I guess it just comes down to HIS STORY vs HIS STORY…and there’s BURRly a doubt as to how tHIS STORY ended. Have a great day, Everyone…And keep in mind…We all have BURRdens in life, but ALEX, violence doesn’t solve anything…🎣🔫🙋🏻

  5. Angela, the restaurant is within walking distance from me. Have eaten there a couple of times with my youngest one and daughter-in-law. Not being overjoyed with raw fish, I must say I did enjoy it both times I was there. The Oasis restaurant at the corner with the green awning and Franks Pizzera on the other side, I’ve eaten there many times.

    • It’s been blazing for hours now.. I first heard it around 6:30 I think, where they deemed it a 2-alarmer, and now it’s roaring as a 4. It looks horrible. And it must be doing damage to most of the block…(As for sushi, I’ve never eaten it, and I intend to remain that way. It definitely has no appEEL to me at all). I hope you have your windows closed, Brooklyn…The air must be lethal by now…Please be careful…🔥🔥🙋🏻

    • Paul….I was just about to tell you how it showed, when you realized it…
      I think I heard that the fire took out the restaurant and the medical building next to it. I didn’t hear anything about the Oasis. I’m surprised that the air cleared up by noon though..there was so much smoke…
      Is that 12 o’clock Mass a daily thing, or just for Holy Week? My Church didn’t have anything additional today, just the 2 usual morning Masses at 7 and 9. It has additional services starting tomorrow. 🙋🏻

      • The picture they had on TV you could see the restaurant with the green awning at the end of the block to its left and Franks Pizzera across the street. Mass is Sat 5:30pm,Sun 8:00am,11:30am &5:30pm Mon & Fri just 12:00pm Tues-Thurs 6:30am &12:00pm. A far cry from when I was a kid and on Sunday they had mass from 6:00 till 1:00pm every hour and from 10:00 -1:00 at three chapels. Thanks for fixing problem.

        • Hey Paul..Yes, I looked for and saw them after you pointed it out to me…So today, Wednesday is the usual noon Mass…Yes, it’s the same all over. Only a handful of Masses these days..and even those aren’t filled to capacity. Different times. I have a houseful of people here.. for dinner and Sports. I told them this is the last hurrah until after Easter. Who’s watching the Yankees who’s watching the Pacer game, they’re all over the place…Me, I’m holed up in my bedroom upstairs by myself watching Jeopardy. This guy James is a mind blower. Have you been watching him? He hasn’t broken a sweat yet! In all the years I’ve never seen anybody like him on the show before. Totally unbelievable! He just pulled down $131K plus for this one night!!! He gives me palpitations! 🙄🙋🏻

    • John, I don’t know whether you saw my comment to you last week, so I’ll repeat it. My clerk at the DMV was a young guy with an official MLB hat that said something like “Opening Weekend”, so I said “Nice hat. Did you go to Japan?” He said “Yes, I did”. “Did you see Ichiro retire?” “Yes, I did!” Now there’s a memory that will last him until he’s as old as I am!

The 4 anagrams were an instant solve for me,even enzyme.But the puzzle solution gave me reason to pause,as I was thinking team rather than cast for the 4 letter word.But then members popped into mind quickly followed by cast.Say,just curious, have my comments come thru? I haven’t garnered any replies lately.

    • Hey Professor. Good Morning. I know I personally didn’t reply to you yesterday when you spoke about the snow, but I thought I did reply to you on Monday. But I just checked and you’re right I didn’t. But yes, you’re coming through loud and clear. I too had an easy solve with the puzzle today, and since I do the cartoon first, CAST hit me immediately…as soon as I read stage actors…So, you have my apology for not replying, Prof…you know you’re a valued MEMBER here!   8. No problem with the words or cartoon answer today though enzyme has tripped me up before. Steve, thanks for the link to “Rockin Robin” yesterday. It was very apropos and I just loved the Edsel.

    • Sorry, just read the comments now and didn’t realize people had trouble with this one. Guess the above comment seems obnoxious in light of that. I guess all the words and puzzle were somehow in my wheelhouse this morning. Two cups of coffee must have helped!

  10. Hi all – Only TARDY took a couple of looks, after going through TRYAD and DRATY. That seems like an archaic word to me, like “hark”. Can’t remember the last time I heard anyone use it. I thought the second answer word would be CASTING; it took writing down the letters and realizing that CAST was the first word to get it.

    Great puns and details today, both Mike and Angela. Thanks for all the Hamilton details Angela, since I haven’t seen the play!

    • Hi Steve…G…It’s Mike that offered the link to Hamilton, The Musical..I concentrated more on the duel itself, and posted the link to that. Did my link come across? I was PLAYing around with it for a while, and I hope I didn’t screw it up…Question? What seems archaic? Tardy or hark? I hear the kids saying Tardy. I think teachers still use it when the kids are late…And, Kudos, Nice sentence👏🏻👏🏻! But if I may? John answered you the other day.   11. Easily my worst performance of 2019. The first three anagrams….easy peasy. And then I was brought to my knees by……’campus’. Gave up. Checked my work……never even close. I was subdued and threw in the towel.

    Tomorrow vengeance will be mine!

    I took some wrong turns with members and casters but eventually came up with the answer.
    I second Steve on the great puns and details today. Especially liked your line, Mike, about “nature’s stage.”
