Happy Tuesday, Jumble friends! Today’s puzzle surely raised my spirits with its unique blend of clue words and cryptic final answer. And the cartoon? It was top shelf, too! All of our clue words were old friends, but their anagrams came up as new. The most challenging one for me was TATTOO because of the equal number of consonants and vowels. Once I employed the double letter trick, the answer came to me in a flash. Our oldest clue word this morning was SMELLY and I had to go all the way back to 11/30/16 to find it. DIMLY ended up being our most recently used with a gameplay date of 12/28/18. Yesterday our clue word solutions were in reverse alphabetical order while today we find them in an ascending order. Thanks for the whimsical touch, David!
In today’s panel, Jumble artist extraordinaire, Jeff Knurek, delights us with a backwoods inspired drawing of three peculiar looking men. There is a fourth man in the panel, but he’s attired in a jacket and dress shirt to differentiate him from the others. The three men are all posing for the camera which is one of those old-timey kind that resembles an accordion. They’re all slightly hunched over and looking deadpan ahead as they wait for the process to be finished. Would it have been too much for one of them to smile or show off some moves like Jäger?
The extra details were overflowing in today’s cartoon, and I couldn’t help but drink them all up! The stills and dilapidated shack added some vertical dimension to the piece, but Jeff didn’t stop there. He also weaved in an oak barrel on its side, a couple of jugs labeled “xxx”, some firewood and of course that lovable looking mutt with his tongue partially sticking out. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t a bordeaux collie, so let’s just call him a hooch pooch instead. It was hard to pick one detail as my favorite, so I’ll offer up three instead. The piece of grass sticking out of the middle guys mouth was clever as was the overgrown lawn that they were standing on. And doesn’t the last guy look a little bit like David L. Hoyt? I have no proof to back it up, but the glasses and bald head seem to suggest that it’s him!
The final solve was an anagram consisting of 10-letters. The two word solution was cleverly hidden within and nothing obvious jumped out at me. The double letter trick helped once again and allowed me to first find STILL. STOOD was quick to be found in the remaining letters for a refreshing finish. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!
