CARTOON ANSWER: BOEING BECAME A HUGE AIRPLANE MANUFACTURER AFTER GETTING – – –

IT   FNL   SAY   FAO   FOR   TGT  =  OFF TO A FLYING START

Good Morning, Everyone!        ✈️ BOEING MY WAY? ✈️

🎶 FLYING START...Made the whole world sing, they had no choice…FLYING START …Like a shining pearl, they sang in one voice…🎶 “Flying Start” – Mike Oldfield 1987    https://tinyurl.com/y22f2dxf

✈️ The IMPACT that air travel had upon the lives we knew,
Until that time was hardly dreamt, but industry just grew…
As tiny as a FENNEL seed, the thought of flying high,
Considered to be SHABBY…but we now know time was nigh.
With FLORAL wreaths I would suppose the early victories won,
Success did not come easily… much work had to be done…
TIGHTS schedules were looming..(yes, I did just use that “S”…
These words aren’t that easily rhymed…I’m under some duress)!
I don’t want a FIASCO…like Boeing seems now to face,
Recent problems are well known…stories all over the place…
But air travel continues…it’s impossible to part…
And Boeing was there early on...OFF TO A FLYING START ✈️

While all of our words today are old favorites, and have had anagrams that were repeated in the past, today’s scrambles are all coming up as new. But it was TIGHTS that caused quite a pause amongst the Early Birds. And the reason may be the use of the plural, not commonly played, that threw them off. Last seen on 06/20/18, it appeared as HGSITT, and today, Sight and Thigh were seen early on, but it took a STRETCH to see TIGHTS. IMPACT, last played merely a month ago on 02/10/19 comes up as most recent, while FIASCO, seen through the years, goes way back to 08/07/14. All in all, for Sunday words, I’d say they’re pretty much PLANE and simple…Maybe we didn’t just WING it, but we LANDED on our feet…

Today we find ourselves outdoors at an Airfield in Seattle, WA, circa mid-1900’s and we see Mr William Boeing, the founder of The Boeing Company. https://tinyurl.com/y62dqpqf  We overhear him discussing his new Airplane Manufacturing Company, and he’s telling his employees that despite business getting OFF THE GROUND with great success, they still need to “increase” production. Maybe not despite…it seems more like supply and demand here, since the success came with them getting…OFF TO A FLYING START! Good one, David…We can always count on you to reach all new HEIGHTS!

Eye candy…We see Mr Boeing, bespectacled and nattily dressed in a taupe colored suit, with a fedora to match, speaking with four crew members, three appearing to be mechanics. Of the two with their “backs to the camera”, the one farthest left seems to be a Pilot, by the looks of his cap. One, in an old-fashioned Fishermans’ type cap, is holding a wrench. The two whose faces we can see, are both sporting handlebar mustaches, common to the early 1900’s. In the background, we see black-silhouetted mountains, and a plane lifting OFF, “into the wild blue yonder“…literally…the sky is bathed a pretty shade of blue. But the pièce de rèsistance this morning? OFF to the right, there are two planes, both brown. The one closest to the front is partially hidden. But the one farthest back, in the Hangar?  If you look real closely, you can see another mechanic, wrench in hand, standing working on the plane…What a great little PROP, Jeff! …So, There you have it, Folks..Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And let’s hope it gets better and better BOEING forward…✈️🙋🏻

  1. Good Morning, Chuck…Challenging..to say the least! And a poem? I couldn’t just WING it…So I went to Mass, and now I’m hoping this 3rd cup of coffee will get it OFF THE GROUND! 😉🙋🏻

° Trying to lessen the IMPACT of the FIASCO that occurred once the FENNEL crop began blooming, she knew that she needed to extract the FLORAL parts of the field, or they would end up looking way too SHABBY…so she donned her gardening TIGHTS, and was OFF TO A FLYING START…

    • Ok, Chuck…Best I could come up with, PLANE and simple…🙋🏻

° They teased him ’bout his cheapness, they said he had the “TIGHTS”..
When it came to his time to treat…he never did what’s right..
His SHABBY cocktail parties, a FIASCO more than not,
His FLORAL displays never worked…too much “Forget-me-nots”…
So this time finding FENNEL as the only hors d’oeuvres served?
Has really made an IMPACT on this all meat-loving herd.
And once again he’s managed to give most a want to part…
I doubt he’ll ever get himself OFF TO A FLYING START!

  2. Hi Angela and Everyone –
Both TIGHTS and FIASCO took me a very long time. The answer wasn’t too bad, once I started looking for a word containing fly. This led me to FLYING and the rest.
    Wishing all a great day.

    • Good Morning, Caroline…Looks like it’s just you and I so far…Maybe the others are having a slow START GETTING OFF THE GROUND this morning! As you can see from the Poll results, you’re not alone. Both words are currently running neck and neck…And I agree..seeing FLY definitely opened up that RUNWAY! Wishing you a great day too. I hope it’s OFF TO A FLYING START! ✈️🙋🏻

  3. 🏀SHOUT OUT TO BETTY.🏀…Tough loss to Texas Tech last night. 😢😢 A nail biter…Not the outcome I was looking for either. As a Mets fan, all I can say is…”Wait’ll next year, Zags..” 🏀🙋🏻

  4. Thanks for the shout out, Angela. Indeed, I was disappointed for Gonzaga, but you’re right there’s always next year. Tights really tripped me up this morning. Had to back into it. Didn’t think I’d be able to figure out the cartoon answer but I saw “off” and that did it. Happy Sunday everyone.

    • Hey Betty. Tights, yes. I do think it’s David’s going with the plural. It just looks so odd…
TBT, I really saw Gonzaga going further. And of course, you know me…I put my money where my big mouth is!! 😂 Sooo, yes, I’m disappointed on a few levels! Ah, what can we say? Every year, I swear I’m going to “Stop the Madness”..😉 but it’s the same old song…I blame it all on the Media! LOL! As for the solve, always interesting to see the different approaches one uses…You went with OFF, where a number of others saw FLY…My mind went to START, coupled with the FLYING…All in all, I think it proved to be a great Sunday puzzle…definitely UP THERE with the best of them! Happy Sundsy, Betty. Enjoy your day! ✈️🙋🏻

  5. Hi all – I once had a backyard full of wild FENNEL and it was a nuisance, so I saw that right away. Got TIGHTS because I was looking for GHT as in LIGHT, etc. FLORAL actually took me the longest. Saw the answer from the letter layout right away. I also hesitated to put the ‘S’ at the end of TIGHTS, but figured that since it refers to one object David could use it, like JEANS or SCISSORS (what’s the term for that, collective noun?)

The obvious note is that Boeing’s latest new jet has gotten off to anything but a flying start.

Very appropriate song Angela, that I hadn’t heard. That’s the ‘Tubular Bells” guy from The Exorcist, right? (Too lazy to look it up).

“The yoga pants company hoped to GET OFF TO A FLYING START and make an IMPACT by jumping on the Green bandwagon with their line of SHABBY FLORAL TIGHTS made of FENNEL fibre, but it turned out to be a complete FIASCO.”

    Have a great day, everyone!

    • Hey G…I don’t know if you eat Fennel, but it’s very popular amongst Italian people.I think it may have originated from Italy..not sure, I’d have to look it up. But years ago, when my Mother’s entire family was still in Brooklyn, my Grandparents had a beautiful garden…the flowers only upstaged by the fruits and vegetables that abounded. My Grandfather ❤️ In true Italiian immigrant form..had a peach tree, and a fig tree second to none, and that fed us all…and there were a ton of us…His tomatoes rivaled anyone’s in the neighborhood, but it was his Fennel plants whose aroma permeated the yard, and that of our neighbors…When the time came that He and my Gramdmother ❤️ were gone, and the house came to be sold, we harvested whatever we could..and the ones of us who owned their own houses at the time were fortunate enough to re-plant my Grandfather’s bounty…And ’till this day, many of us are still enjoying it…well all of us actually, because we all still share our new bounties! But whenever I even just smell that anise-like aroma, I’m totally transported back to the garden in Brooklyn…Gee, sorry…all this just to say that it’s not always a nuisance! 😉 Ok..Yes, Mike Oldfield is the “Tubular Bells” guy. I think that may have his debut album too. I’d have to look it up..but after this whole Fennel scenario? ,,,I’m a little lazy also! 😂 And thanks for the Shout Out, I thought it totally apropos too, as soon as I had the solve… I’m not much into Progressive Rock or New Age, but I know of it, and of him though my Nephews. They’re fans…Boeing’s troubles? Yes, I mentioned it…I’m sure we haven’t heard the least of that yet…As for the collective noun thing…No, that pertains to like..A flock of geese, or a murder of crows…I do think there may be a word for what you’re leaning towards…but again…now I’m too lazy to look it up! 😂😂! And in closing..👏🏻👏🏻 for that sentence.. no matter how far you FLEW OFF the radar! LOL! “Shabby Floral Tights made of Fennel fiber”??!! Manufactured and sold where? California??? Creative, at the least…Truly comical at its’ best! 👏🏻👏🏻 Have a good one, G…I may need to join you for that nap just about now! 😂 Here’s to a good one! 🍷🙋🏻

      • Please go on! No, really, that’s a wonderful story about the fennel and your grandparents, thanks. A licorice smell and taste, right? It’s just that, like so much here, it grew so quickly and easily that it took over the whole yard if you turned your back!
I’m up for that nap as soon as the laundry’s finished. Good luck with NCAA, baseball, etc. 🙋🏻‍♂️

        • Ha! Watch what you wish for! But thanks….if nothing else, it’s a hell of a wonderful memory. Correct,,,black licorice…And I can definitely understand how it could become overpowering, it does need attention. But if the opportunity should ever present itself again, give it a shot. It’s a great plant. Thanks for the well wish, but I think I’m going to watch it all as only a spectator today…My nerves are a little SPENT! 😉 Pun intended! Enjoy your rest, G…Talk to you later…🙋🏻

  6. Interesting detail – when I looked online, I saw that the plane taking off and the one being worked on were both seaplanes. Following Angel’s link, I learned that was how the company got its start. Jeff was right on the ball, as usual.

Also there was a 1965 movie named “Boeing Boeing”.

  7. Fennel was the toughest word for me today, but probably because I was out of my usual environment, accessing the puzzle in the Chicago Tribune.

    • Hi Prof! Fennel? Yes, I can SEED what you mean.😉.Hope you’re having a good time with the Littles, Chuck! Enjoy! ✈️🙋🏻

    • Hi Charles. This is the standard Jumble for March 31st that’s printed in most newspapers. I think you may be looking at the Vintage 4-word Jumble Puzzle that appears on a lot on on-line sites. If so, and you might need a hand with it, just let me know. I’d be more than happy to help you out. Have a great day, Charles! 🙋🏻
