Happy Wednesday, Jumble players! Our midweek puzzle consisted of four recycled clue words, but all of the anagrams are coming up as new. I saw the answers to both of the 5-letter words straight away but did have to pause on both of the 6-letter ones. Of the two, PALACE ended up taking the most time to decipher so it’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. NIPPY was our freshest clue word with a gameplay date of 8/20/18 while GLASSY is our blast from the past on 7/25/16.

The setting for today’s panel is the dining room of a restaurant and it’s the second time this week that the cartoon has featured such a location. The checkered tablecloth is reminiscent of an Italian eatery and the cartoon sentence as well as the cuisine being served seem to indicate that it is indeed an Italian restaurant. Our characters bowls are full of noodles so it appears as though they’ve just been served their dinners. The older woman standing between the couple looks like she’s the owner of the restaurant and she can be seen tenderly pinching the cheek of the male guest. Jeff perfectly captured both the look of love and admiration in his eyes as he peers up to the woman and exchanges his dialogue. He looks quite pleased that his dinner will only cost him one cent, and I’m sure that he’ll leave her quite a hefty tip in exchange for her generosity.

The details in the panel seem to indicate that this restaurant is a more intimate dining experience than larger Italian style eateries like the Olive Garden. The tables are spaciously spread throughout the room which would keep the noise level to a minimum and also creates the feeling that your an actual guest in this woman’s home. There’s plenty of bread on the table and their wine glasses appear to be full. The pasta dish that they’re enjoying looks like rigatoni because it is tube-shaped and isn’t cut on a bias like penne is. This small oversight probably wasn’t noticed because it’s nearly impossible to see the detail of the noodles in the newspaper version.

The anagram for the final solve consisted of 10-letters which would be equally split into two words. One of the words was in quotes which often indicates that it’ll be a play on words. The key to solving it were the words “1 cent” in the cartoon sentence. Of course one cent is a penny so the answer was an instant solve for me. If the cartoon sentence was worded differently, perhaps it would have been a bit more challenging. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

    Whoever was in charge here needs to overlook this rule…
    And in his Boston accent he asked..”This you want to fostah?
    A hundred year old rule, saying I can’t eat “PENNY” PASTA”?

    ° With the weather being so NIPPY, they decided to serve soup instead of the TOKEN PENNY PASTA dish, but with the catering hall being no PALACE, they found themselves without the proper GLASSY bowls…

  3. As a TOKEN of appreciation for taking him in out of the NIPPY weather, the GLASSY-eyed gent told everyone that the people and atmosphere at the shelter were better for him than anything could ever be- including a royal PALACE.

  8. Yesterday, I Recieved a Book I Had Ordered In the Mail About….. NYC Subways ! And Right On the Cover Was a Quite Huge ….. NYC Subway …….. TOKEN ……. SO When I Saw TOKEN In the Word List Today …… Pick One, I Fainted, I Could Not Believe It, I Went Crazy ……… Ha, Ha, Ha !!!!

    • Hi Shelby. Now that’s a coincidence. NYC born and bred, I’ve definitely had my share of tokens, and I kind of miss them in a way too…but for the last umpteen years it’s been the Metro Card. And I just recently read that it also will become a thing of the past. They’re working on the new Smart Phone App/Card, that’s coming soon…Thanks for sharing..🚂🙋🏻

      • Thanks For the Comment. Was Born In Manhattan, Raised In the Bronx … But After College Went to Work In NJ ! Then to Chicago, Where I Froze to Death, Which Is Why I Now Enjoy SUNNY CALIFORNIA. For the Last, Oh My …. 35 Years , Now That I Compute It … So Have Not Been On the NYC Subway In Ages But Still Have My Subway Token That Matches the One That Was On the Book ! Only Took Me 1 Hour to Find It Yesterday…. :–) P.S. I Know My Old Neighborhood Radically Changed, Bronx, So I Don’t Do Much ” Looking ” But Thank Goodness the Empire State & Chrysler Buildings are Still There, Ha, Ha !!

        • Hi Shelby…You’re very welcome. You’re a lot more adventurous than I! I was born in Brooklyn, not far from Sheepshead Bay, and I stayed there most of my life. I considered Florida for a while, even bought a home there, but family obligations kept calling me back. I didn’t mind though, I felt I belonged here anyway. I’m on Staten Island now, which is kind of like little Brooklyn. Every other person was born there! I think the native born Staten Islanders curse the Verrazano Bridge every day for bringing us all here! 😂😂 I stayed in Chicago for a while too. Actually, I went there to see Sinatra in concert, and kind of fell in love. I say “kind of”, because…well, let’s just sat the 🎶melody DIDN’T linger on…LOL!!! Anyway, I’m a staunch believer in Home is where the Heart is..and mine was always really back here…That token you speak of. I have a few saved myself. In fact I have a few different sized ones. I have two of the little ones, that looked dime-sized? I’m not sure if you remember those. I don’t ever remember using them, they belonged to my Father. And I do have a bunch of the last ones issued the big ones that were fazed out in 2003. Metro Card use had already started by then, but I held out until the very end! LOL! I’m so not a big fan of change! I’m glad you found yours…and I think some of the old ones may be worth money, but I’m not sure. I don’t really know much about the Bronx, as I’m sure you may not know all that much about Brooklyn. For some reason Brooklyn and the Bronx never “mixed” all that much, right? I guess because of the distance involved. I remember meeting a guy in a club in the city one night, and after he found out where I lived, he asked me if I’d be willing to move! LOL! Yea, it definitely was the distance! And as far as our neighborhoods changing…Shelby…EVERYTHING here in NY is changed. No matter what borough we speak of. You wouldn’t recognize a thing…Big changes too. I guess it’s just the nature of the beast…and the need for more and more housing…Sometimes it really is the Asphalt Jungle out there! But I think that’s the same all over today…in any big city. And I hate to tell you this…but just last week or so, the Chrysler Building was sold. And the stories are that it sold for “only” $150 million…Imagine? “Only”?!!! That beautiful Art Deco classic. I hate to even think it might not “be” anymore. What’s happening with it, I didn’t know…It’s all on-line, you can take a look if you’d like to read about it. Anyway…Phew! Sorry about the length of all this! It’s just easy to get carried away talking about NY…Imagine if I got paid for writing here? Especially by the word? By now, I probably could have bid on that Chrysler Building myself! ROTFL!         • Hi Shelby…Nice to hear from you again. It’s been a while since my Chicago days, so I could never recall where we dined. But I did try Deep Dish at a few places. I enjoyed it, but I don’t know if I’d trade in my “Slice of NY Pizza”! 😉 Finding “real” pizza outside of NY has always been tough. The experts say it’s the water…and that does make sense. But how lucky are you to find a place that compares? That’s the biggest complaint I hear from all my friends that have left the city…”We can’t get decent pizza”! 😂As for the tokens…kind of like the old baseball cards we all had at one time…I made a list one day of everything I wished I’d have kept…Shelby…the list was endless!       • Hi Shelby…I can tell you, being raised in an extremely traditional Italian-American family, with all four of my Grandparents having been born in the old country, I was always told to never “dirty” two things…My pizza and my scotch! LOL! And I’ve held true to my upbringing! To this day, I put nothing on my pizza…and nothing in my scotch! That nonsense of pineapple, etc? We pray for those people…and ask God’s forgiveness for the lost souls! 😂 But all kidding aside, NY water has been deemed the best tasting in the country. And I remember my first trip down South…I thought I’d die “testing the waters” ..such a different taste…Water has to make a difference…it’s a key element to the baking….Anyway, I’m glad you found a place that can give you a little piece of “home”…and I think it’s your responsibility now to lead those West Coast souls out of the dessert!!! 😂😂 Go forth and spread the Good Word, Woman!   10. I’m surprised no one of the accomplished blogsters here offered a “penny for the team’s collective thoughts. Just got in from a business meeting and finished the jumble with minimal difficulty, especially after dining Italian last night. In true form my daughter’s bolognese was served with penne rigate as well. Guess I just had a token thought the solve had to be a penne ante play on words. We changed plans to dine Italian as the nippy air at supper time was not condusive to grilling steak as planned outside. Not to worry – ventured to our local Italian palace and returned home with glassy eyes thanks to some extra wonderful Bianco.

  11. As I mentioned yesterday, I am new to solving Jumble. I managed to unscramble all four words and the panel!! A first for me. I do enjoy the play on words!
