FRIFNCOAEROF = RAN FOR OFFICE

Happy Tuesday, everyone! All of our clue words were familiar old friends with three of the four anagrams coming up as new. YOGAVE was a repeat from 4/16/16, but it was still an impressive jumble. The only one to cause me to stumble a bit was RUNOFF so it’ll be my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. FINCH was used just last month on 2/13/19 so it’s our most recent repeat while FRILL takes the medal for oldest clue word with a gameplay date of 10/27/14. With all of the clue word mumbo jumbo out of the way, it’s time to sprint on over to today’s cartoon.

The setting for our panel is the finish line of a marathon. The press is huddled around the winner of the race while two other participants can be seen dashing towards the finish line. The dialogue of our winner eludes to the fact that he’s also running for a political office and he seems to think he has what it takes to pull off another victory.

The press surrounding him is comprised of three Jumble characters that are each using a different medium to capture the moment. The woman on the left is using a cell phone and it wouldn’t surprise me if she was live-streaming the interview. The gentleman in the middle is using a digital voice recorder while the reporter on the right snaps a few pictures on his camera.

There were a couple of fun details included in the panel that you may have overlooked. The winner of the race has a bib number of 17 and the image on his medal is of a person breaking a finish line tape with both hands up in a victory pose. There is also a laurel wreath imprinted on the outermost edge of the medal which really made it pop. My favorite detail of all was the runner that you can barely make out next to the sea of shadowy figures in the crowd. Zooming in on the underdog, you can see the look of determination on his face as he strides towards the finish line!

The anagram for the final solution consisted of 12-letters which is the same amount as yesterday’s. The cartoon sentence, in my opinion, gave a bit too much away making the answer a cinch to figure out.  Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

  1. Good Morning, Mike…Good Morning, Everyone…Good Morning, Chuck…
*** The proper name Finch is pronounced with a “N” sound, but the bird FINCH is properly pronounced wth a “T” sound…🗣🙋🏻

° A FINCH sat high up in a tree, and chirped a sound so sweet
The other birds had RUNOFF but he stayed and sat to tweet…
Whatever VOYAGE drew them, he had no need to go…
The life of FRILL and bird-braining was one he’d just forgo.
He needed to be serious, not act silly and softish…
His flights were far from fancy now, because he RAN FOR OFFICE

° He RAN FOR OFFICE years ago, the VOYAGE not so great
There is no FRILL or time to play and then there’s those debates…
He’d seen opponents RUNOFF, the competition steep,
And once you get involved…well you just end up in it deep.
He started out an Eagle, but soon became a FINCH…
    No more for him, he walked away…cause Politic’s a b—h! ***

° They disliked him once he RAN FOR OFFICE on his No-FRILL platform, and now they’d all RUNOFF on a new VOYAGE, leaving him behind with nothing but his pet FINCH and his campaign debt…

  2. After returning from his long VOYAGE to witness the election RUNOFF, the bird watcher decided to FRILL up the aviary for his pet FINCH.

      • Mike. Thanks for the compliment. I sometimes get your posts and Angela’s mixed up. I obviously have to pay more attention attention to what I’m doing. I hope you are having the sunshine in New England like we in Pennsylvania are having. Keep up the good work!

  3. Good morning, Angela. I found this to be a tough one. Hope your day progresses nicely..

    • Well you could have fooled me! 😉 Nicely done! 👏🏻👏🏻! Thanks. And I wish the same for you..🙋🏻

  4. TO ALL THE JOEs and JOSEPHINEs out there…HAPPY NAME DAY! “Buon San Giuseppe” 🍷And since today is also Father’s Day in Italy… “Auguri Papa”! Enjoy! 🍷🍝🙋🏻

  5. Good morning. Hey Angela”What am I chopped liver”. Where is my special hello !! Lol. Mike, you stumbled on Runoff where I fell off the cliff on Voyage. But I did bounce right back up. On both words I took an awful long time to finally get even knowing the three letters I needed for Voyage. Being stuck I went to the cartoon and got the answer rather quick. When I finally got those last two words I was talking to myself and shaking my head. Could have sworn there was somebody in the kitchen yelling out “DUMMY ” and I’m the only one here. Great job guys. Until tomorrow stay well.

  6. I have only recently began attempting to solve Jumble. Today I was able to solve all four scrambled words. I have yet to solve the panel puzzle. I did give it attempt and thought “Ran off course” would have been a good answer as well.

  7. Runoff also gave me pause, but given the final solution, runoff also came into view. After our hectic weekend gkids visits: Macomb-Oglesby-Utica-Dixon-Naperville-Utica-Macomb,to see all 8 gkids, aging from 4-17, it’s good to be at home today with the hard copy newspaper at hand.

    • Sounds like a marathon to me, Chuck! All kidding aside, your grandchildren are lucky to have such a wonderful grandfather and I’m happy to hear you made ut home safe. Thanks for checking in! 🙂

  8. Hi all – VOYAGE would have taken me longer, but I recognized it from having been stuck on it before. I was thinking “RAN THE” or “RAN OFF” for the answer, but the ‘C’ made OFFICE and the answer appear.

Funny that a word (RUNOFF) also pertains to the cartoon and answer. Don’t remember seeing that before.

    Have a great day, everyone!

“On his migratory VOYAGE, the FINCH stopped to bathe in the stream’s RUNOFF to restore the FRILL in his plumage.”

Of interest only to Jumble trivia nit-pickers (but come to think of it, that may describe a lot of us) – I’ve long wondered why one of my newspapers has the classic phrase “That Scrambled Word Game” in the banner but the Chronicle doesn’t. It seems that the Chronicle replaces that original banner with a different one, because today they messed up and printed their banner, then the entire cartoon with its “Word Game” banner right below it.

    • Steve..The NY Daily News prints neither. Instead it reads Jumble by David L Hoyt and Jeff Knurek, Monday thru Saturday. And on Sunday’s it simply reads Jumble…no acknowledgement at all, on either the main puzzle, or the Kids one that’s also printed. The words “scrambled” and “word” don’t appear at all! 🤔🙋🏻

  9. I had to back into runoff as well. No problem with the other words or cartoon solution. So far it’s been an easy week but that could all change tomorrow. Happy Tuesday everyone.

    • Hi, Betty! I’m praying for a difficult one tomorrow because we’ve gotten off easy so far this week. I thought “TEDIUM” was a great word choice by DLH on Saturday and would enjoy having more obscure words like that a few times a week (or more). Here’s hoping all is well! 🙂🙂🙂
