Happy Monday, Jumble players! Our week of solving duties began with four clue words that were all classics from 2018. Even though we’ve seen them before, their anagrams come up as new to offer us a bit of a challenge. I saw all the answers right away except for TENANT which will by my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. I had a hunch that the answer was going to be TENANT but I tried a few other combinations just to be on the safe side. Our oldest word of the day was SHRUG with a gameplay date of 4/12/18 while LOUNGE clocks in as our most recent repeat on 9/14/18.

Our cartoon brings us to the high seas where we encounter a group of six Jumble characters in a dining area. The cartoon sentence informs us that these passengers are on a cruise ship and they’ve just finished eating at the on-board buffet. By looking at their plates, we can see that they’ve gorged themselves on delicacies such as lobster and fish and imbibed on glasses of wine and cocktails, too. Such is the way on cruise ships nowadays and I can relate to the bloat these characters are experiencing after having done the same myself. It all looks so good and you can’t help but take an extra portion or two!

The extra details in today’s panel were superb, and the scraps on the diners plates offer clues as to the food items they’ve just consumed. I’ve already mentioned the lobster and fish, but we also see a bit of salad, some spareribs, and the T of a t-bone steak! Absent was the fork and knife resting together on the plate to indicate that the diners have finished eating and instead we see their dinner napkins in crumpled up balls on the table. In the background we see a character bellying up to the buffet and his hand gesture of two indicates that he wants a double portion of the steaming hot lobster. There’s also a ham and some fish but he’ll probably have to return for those with a fresh plate. My favorite detail was Jeff’s signature sinking sailboat just behind the chefs head. If you missed it, be sure to go back and take a look!

The final solution was an anagram consisting of 12-letters. David did an impressive job of keeping all of the words well hidden making us work a bit for the answers. Staring at the letters, FULL and THE came into view leaving me to arrange the five leftovers to finish it off. This solution was used previously on 5/30/14 but it was so long ago that I can’t remember what the puzzle was about. Have a great start to your week and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

  1. Good morning. The guys gave us a typical Monday jumble including the cartoon. Once I wrote down the letters from the words I was able to get the cartoon right away. The hint for the answer was in the guy patting his stomach that was bloated from all the food. Thanks Mike on all the hidden treasures that us paper readers never get to see. Until tomorrow stay well

  2. Good Morning, Mike. Good Morning, Everyone. Good Morning, Chuck…I did one each with the answer, and one each without…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

ยฐ The building had an TENANT’s band, and they were good to boot
I thought I’d like to join them…and maybe pay the FLUTE
They met each week on Tuesday, in the LOUNGE off the lobby
And there they served refreshments, some wine, coffee and tea
I figured I’d give it a shot, or I could SHRUG it off
If nothing else I’d socialize and have myself a quaff…
…The funny thing is with the Flute…it’s not who plays the loudest
It’s who don’t laugh and all the while correctly pronounce Flautist!

ยฐ Seeing the head of the TENANT Association in the LOUNGE, he asked him why the flue on his fireplace still wasn’t repaired and he laughed, gave him a SHRUG, and showed him the work order that read..”FLUTE needs repairing…”

ยฐ Wanting to please the landlord TO THE FULLEST, the new TENANT offered to play the FLUTE twice a week in the LOUNGE…but all he got in response was a SHRUG and a …”Whatever”…

ยฐ When one decides the time has come to make a Bucket List
A lot of thought is put into doing it TO THE FULLEST.
Perhaps learn how to play the FLUTE or maybe knit a SHRUG,
Or start to see a therapist to lose the fear of bugs…
Or open up a seaside LOUNGE way out upon the bay
And give a local TENANT a reprieve after their day…
Whatever seems important, all those things you can’t resist…
The first step is prioritize…and write the Bucket List…

  3. The new TENANT did nothing but SHRUG his shoulders when the people sitting in the LOUNGE asked him to tone down on the FLUTE playing.

  4. Mike. That day, a Friday, May 30th, 2014, the puzzle’s theme was an “All you can eat Steak Restaurant”, and the question was:

“They were enjoying the all-you-can-eat steak restaurant โ€“ ”

    Answer: To The Fullest…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  5. Hi Angela. Obviously a little redundancy, but I thought it might occur. Your mind appears to be running in high gear this morning.. Hope your day goes well!

    • Never redundancy. Just minds thinking along the same track. And let’s face it, with certain words, we’re pigeonholed…High gear? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I just had a lot of extra time on my hands this morning…Hope your day goes well too, Chuck! Enjoy! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  6. Lounge was troublesome as was the correct spelling of tenant. The sight of satisfied full stomachs gave the final solution away.

  7. Hi all – LOUNGE was my hardest word. The UN trick just gave UN-LEGO and I thought someone took away his kidโ€™s plastic blocks after stepping on one.

Thanks for the details Mike, and great sentences Angela and everyone. As you said, the words sometime limit the available subjects:
โ€œThe landlord gave a skeptical SHRUG when his TENANT assured him he could afford the rent on his earnings as a FLUTE-playing LOUNGE Lizard.โ€

    Have a great day, everyone!

Songs from the ceiling this morning:
    At CVS, Dire Straits entry in the songs-mentioning-other-songs category;
    ๐ŸŽตโ€Be-bop-a-Lula, baby, Whaโ€™d I Say?โ€๐ŸŽต, from โ€œWalk of Lifeโ€.
At Safeway, โ€œI Only Want to Be With Youโ€ by Hootie and the Blowfish.
Iโ€™ll take Dire Straits any day.

RIP Dick Dale, โ€œKing of the surf guitarโ€, who was instrumental (pun intended) in the creation of Surf Rock, the development of Fender guitars and amps, and the introduction of the song โ€œMisirlouโ€ to rock history.
โ€œHis songs sounded like waves crashing and adrenaline-fueled adventure.โ€
