Happy Tuesday, Jumble geniuses! Today’s puzzle was only tad bit more difficult than yesterday’s gimme, but all of its components added up to a really fun solve. All of our clue words were once again recycled favorites while the anagrams for both of the six-letter words popped up as new. DREAMY was the only word to offer me a slight pause so it’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. ABACK was our oldest word of the group and was last used on 8/25/16 while DREAMY was our most recent with a gameplay date of 11/01/17.

Our cartoon this morning transports us back to 1909 where we see a press conference going on. Two gentleman have wide smiles on their faces as they unveil the design of the new Lincoln “penny”. I placed penny in quotes because when it was first introduced, its official name was the Lincoln cent. After completing the cartoon answer it was obvious as to why Jeff decided to go with penny so we’ll let that minor technicality slide.

The portrait of the one cent piece was the highlight of today’s panel. The caricature of President Lincoln was on point all the way down to his beard! The words “In God We Trust” were just above Lincoln’s head and the coin was also stamped 1909 on the bottom right. The only part of the coin that I found confusing was the mint mark just below the date. Enlarging the cartoon the best that I could revealed a “B” which I couldn’t find any information about. Perhaps someone more adept at numismatics can fill us in.

The layout for the final solution was an impressive anagram consisting of 11-letters. David did a top-notch job of keeping the answer well hidden, but the cartoon drawing of the penny brought cents into view almost immediately. The rest of the answer flowed naturally from the remaining letters leaving us an absolute groaner of a finish. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow!

    ° Her efforts to TEMPT the DREAMY-looking lifeguard failed, since he seemed to be taken ABACK by her advances, and did his best to SHRINK away…

    ° With the tabloids describing him as DREAMY, he was taken ABACK when they printed the story about how his SHRINK tried to TEMPT him into a love affair…

    ° She sat star-struck and DREAMY-eyed, his looks took her ABACK,
    Ignoring all the warning signs that he was just a hack.
    She watched him try to TEMPT the other girls upon the lot,
    Determined not to SHRINK away, she just wanted a shot…
    So while the movie filmed each day, this one of such suspense,
    She wore her heart upon her sleeve feeling that IT MADE “CENTS”

    • The SHRINK was taken ABACK when his DREAMY girl friend tried to TEMPT him into marrying her while he was still in the process of establishing his practice. Maybe a little redundancy with one of yours, Angela, but the best I can come with. Have a good one!!

Good Afternoon…👏🏻👏🏻 Not really, more like a blend of some of what I was thinking…And I definitely didn’t think DREAMY= Female! 😂 Plus, there’s just so far you can go with ABACK, and I realized after I posted that i used “SHRINK away” 3 times! You want to talk redundancy?! 😂 I like how you went to SHRINK as the noun too… it took me a while to get there…Very well done, Sir! Wishing you a good one too! 🙋🏻

  2. We had a lot of “MINT” condition (to COIN a phrase) puzzles last year. This is our first for 2019. In fact, we had one back on August 29th that dealt with Pennies also .And if you look closely at the reporter at left, his camera is showing the inverted image of the Penny and Lincoln’s profile…Nice TURN of events, Jeff!   3. Good morning. Another easy one for me today. The oddest thing happened when going through the words. I had just gotten to Dreamy when I heard on NBC show they were taking about dreams at the exact moment. The cartoon answer came when I had CENTS which left MADE. The DREAMY chocolate strawberries did TEMPT me but I was taken ABACK because they covered them in SHRINK wrap and I never noticed it until I tried to sneak one out. Until tomorrow stay well.

It was right there starring me in the face and it flew right over my head. It’s a pleasure reading you every morning. You guys are the “one two”punch of boxing. With that combination,it’s a win everyday.

    • Hi, Clay! The letter in your example is an “S”. In the cartoon, I looked at the “S” in TRUST and tried matching it to the mint mark and it looked nothing alike. I’m still saying it’s a B. 🙂

  6. Yes, he definitely put a B in the cartoon. I just couldn’t tell if it was a P or an S in my link. You cleared that up, so I’m at least not “Baffled” by that anymore anyway. Maybe he’ll write in and let us know!

  7. Dreamy was looking like rem-a-dy to me but then dreamy came to mind with the solution, it made “cents”, popping into mind.

  8. Hi all – After having the word AD-vent the other day, I tried ADMYER. Then I also saw REMADY, so DREAMY took the longest.

    Thanks for all the details, especially the image on the camera viewfinder, Angela, good eye!
    Is that supposed to be the Lincoln Memorial in the background? I’ve always liked the fact that state names are engraved around the top, and that fact lends itself to many coin-related trivia questions.

    There almost was a cent with a “B” on it, but it wasn’t produced, and certainly not as a mint mark:
    “However, removing the initials and striking new pieces with no initials would lead to a three-day delay in coinage; effacing the initials and inserting an initial “B” would cause a 14-day delay. Assistant Treasury Secretary Eliot Norton, after meeting with Barber, ordered that the coins be struck with no initial.”

      • Cool, and it wasn’t frozen to the tree! I’ve had finch-like birds trying to take over our hummingbird feeder. They don’t seem to be able to drink from it, so I’m not sure what’s going on there.

        • House finches and orioles are known to try and do that. If your feeder has perches, you might want to eliminate them. You can also add a cage around the feeder but it’s not aesthetically pleasing!

    • Hey Steve…Thank you, I thought it was a cute touch. But the building? We’re supposed to be in 1909. Jeff might be taking “graphic license” but that’s a real long shot. Since thoughts of constructing the Memorial went around in circles for so many years, (Penny wise, pound foolish)? 😉and didn’t begin until around 1914, it’s probably a Mint structure.     • Hi, Lawrence! That’s a great thought and I would have agreed with you hadn’t I found this:

      Brenner’s initials (VDB), on the reverse at its base, were deemed too prominent once the coins were issued, and were removed within days of the release. The initials were restored, this time smaller, on Lincoln’s shoulder, in 1918.

      It’s been bugging me all morning so thanks for helping out. 🙂

        Yeah, she wrote some really good ones for both adults and children, which I imagine is unusual.
        How cool about John Prine coming there. I’ve never heard him live but would love to. Judy Collins was just here on Saturday, and she looked and sounded wonderful at almost 80!
        One other thing – I noticed that Death Wish coffee was rocketed into space and delivered to the International Space Station!

        • Hi Caroline. I’m not that familiar with upstate, but Prine is going to be in Port Chester next month, and in Buffalo and Tappan in June. We saw him last year at the Garden, and it was a great show. I can’t believe the tour schedule he’s planned for 2019. I got exhausted just reading it! 😂 Hope your night’s going well! 🎶🙋🏻

  14. Wow! Thanks, Angela.. Dinah was always one of my favorites. I’d kind of forgotten about Tony, although he did have a great voice. I used to get he and Tony MarVin mixed up.

    • You’re very welcome, Chuck. When I read what you wrote, it struck a chord…No pun intended! 😉 So I Googled it, and there it was! Kind of corny, but cute at the same time…I suppose a testament to the innocence of the times. Then I checked, and saw that I have a copy of it in with my Fathers’ collection. I’ve vague memories of Dinah Shore, mostly of her relationship with Burt Reynolds, (which I think I was too young to “appreciate”). 😉 She may have been the original celebrity Cougar! 😉 And I remember that growing up, my Grandmother had these two beautiful glass doors that opened into a room. And my uncles, her sons, many years my seniors, would come through them, kind of flamboyantly and laugh and call each other Dinah Shore. The strange things we remember, right? As for Tony Martin I mostly knew of him being married to Cyd Charisse,(whose name I thought to be so exotic), his whole life. Old time Hollywood glamour couple. I have a few Tony Martin recordings also. And yes, I agree he did have a really nice voice. Tony Marvin? I had no clue. So I Googled him…Still, no clue! 😂 But it’s always nice to learn about someone new…I’m glad you enjoyed hearing the song again…🎶🙋🏻

  15. Not that you care, Angela, Marvin was a popular radio announcer associated with Arthur Godfrey. Godfrey did a lot for television, but never, in my estimation, got his just dues. Have a nice evening.

    • Hi Chuck. Oh no, on the contrary, I do. Maybe I didn’t explain myself clearly earlier. I had no idea who he was, but I read his bio on line. I enjoy learning about anybody! 😉 Only fly in the ointment is that growing up in an Italian American enclave, Arthur Godfrey was totally persona non grata to us, because of the Julius La Rosa imbroglio, as you can well imagine. So I have to take a pass on my opinion of him. It’s Lent…And I promised myself to hold my tongue, and be a kinder, gentler Angela! 😂 I wish you a nice evening too, Chuck .🙋🏻

    • Hi Clay. I don’t know if I’d call him “my” Julius La Rosa, but I do know that he was considered that to not only my family, but to a good portion of mainstream America. I only know what I remember hearing and reading years later. The whole brou-ha-ha was over and done wiith before I was born. But the bitterness over it obviously lingered. That guy in the video, Peter Kelley hit the nail right on the head. Humility? Julie lacked humility? Please…Godfrey’s ego was as big as Julie’s talent..he had an arrogance about him that was legendary. And he thought it ok to rule with an iron fist besides..Take ballet lessons, don’t hire an agent, etc etc. Imagine that flying today? Not likely. And bottom line, Clay? If he was so displeased with Julie, and felt he needed to be fired? Do it like a man, one on one. The way he did it? On air, with Julie hearing of it at the same time as America did, blindsided like that? That’s not the action of a man. In Brooklyn we have a name for men with moves like that…and it starts with a P…(and I don’t mean petty). Anyone, Godfrey tried to besmirch Julie’s reputation, and only succeeded in tarnishing his own. Just desserts, like revenge…very sweet….And for some strange reason, the phrase..”The Lady doth protest too much, methinks..” seems to be resounding in my head! LOL! Hmm.
