Happy Tuesday, Jumble geniuses! All of our clue words were trusty old favorites. The anagram for WIGGLE was the only one that we’ve definitely seen before leaving three brand new Jumbles to work through. Of the three, FEWEST took an extra second to decipher which makes it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. VISOR was a great Jumble too so I’ll choose it as the runner-up. TRACT was the oldest repeat of the bunch and was scrambled as CRTAT the last time we saw it on 3/14/18. VISOR was the freshest with a gameplay date of 10/18/18.
If you’re a Star Wars fan, Yoda really going to enjoy today’s cartoon! The setting is a darkened movie theater where we see three women getting ready to watch a movie. On the screen we see the opening crawl line of the iconic film “Star Wars”. Even if you’ve never seen the 1977 classic, chances are you immediately recognized this opening line and were able to identify the film without the help of the cartoon sentence.
My newspaper had today’s cartoon shaded almost entirely in black so I had to use an online version to catch the fine details. The theater has a total of 23 seated Jumble characters which includes the three woman that are exchanging dialogue. The middle woman is holding a tub of popcorn and we can see a “P” on the container. The woman on the far left has a giant handful of the snack and the woman on the far right is holding a drink cup with a straw sticking out of it. My favorite detail of the piece was the hair styling of the women. The feathered hair of the woman on the left gave the piece a dated feel which made it feel authentic.
The final solve was an anagram consisting of 12-letters which is two less than yesterday’s layout. The addition of the quotes made the solution a bit more challenging, but the dialogue and sentence offered numerous clues to help us out. The V at the front allowed me to instantly find VIEWS. With those letters crossed out, GREAT came shortly thereafter leaving RE to finish it off.
I’ll be away on vacation for the next couple of weeks so you’ll be in good hands with Angela keeping the party rolling. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you in March!

Three women? Mike, you must be much younger than I am. Those are three 1970’s preteens. Feathered and long hair was what we wore. Our parents may of thought we looked like girls though. I always had my blue comb with a handle in my pocket at the ready for the foxy girls.
Their hair made them look older. I wasn’t ever born when it was released!!!

The anagrams were a quick solve with fewest causing a very slight pause.The final solution,given the cartoon depicting repeat viewing of the Star War films,led to a quick near blind solve.On a related Star Wars note, 2 of our grandsons are named after Star Wars men,,Harrison,after Harrison Ford,and Luke,after Luke Skywalker.

I saw “Star Wars” at least four times in 1977 (could have been a couple more) in the best possible circumstances at the time – the long-lost and lamented Coronet Theater in SF, which became know as the Star Wars theater for a time – 70MM projection, plush rocking chair seats, the latest Dolby sound. Even waiting in the line with friends was fun at the time:

Easy one today in spite of the “ “ marks. Steve, we too saw Star Wars at the old Coronet Theater. In those days you had to wait in line through an entire show before getting in to the theater. You became very well acquainted with everyone in line. I’ve lost count of how many times my children & I went there, more than 10 I’m sure. My son still has all his original Star Wars figures. George Lukas refurbished a building in our Presidio to form his Digital Arts Center. It has a statue of Yoda in front. For a while the mailbox outside the gate was painted like R2 D2. Good afternoon. Has anyone made reference to the different words in the blog today. Then when you click in the middle you get today’s words. Another easy day. I really can’t think of one word harder than the others. I happen To go straight down the line without doubling back. Had to write down the letters before solving the cartoon answer which was also fairly easy. Mike have a nice vacation with your family. Get back safe and sound. Until tomorrow stay well.

“On the anonymous name problem, I have an idea which might be worth someone trying. Two or three weeks ago I made a change to my profile, and I haven’t had any of the anonymous problem. I clicked on the “portrait” icon in the upper right corner of the page. On the menu that brought up, I went to “My Profile”. On that page I put the name I wanted to go by in “Public Display Name”. Worth a try.”
I got a math journal in the mail recently, and a small article appeared titled “Help with the Jumble”. For each letter of the alphabet, it gives the probability that given jumble word with the letter in it, that it begins the word. The highest probability is with W with 68.5%, followed by J with 67.2%. Both are rare letters that begin words frequently. Then comes B 62.3%, and then PWTFCMASOIGKDHVLZYRU, and the least probable initial letters are N, 6.6%, E, 4.7% (because E appears all over the place; it is so common), and then X, 4.0%, a really rare letter. I tried that on this jumble It says the most probable letter in CATTR is T, and sure enough, the word is TRACT. There’s a W in GILWIG, and that is WIGGLE. So 2 of the 4 words correspond to these frequencies. I believe the Jumble writers stuck a hyphen in GREAT RE-VIEWS to block the possible solution GREAT VIEWERS, which I am sure these attendees are, but they don’t fit with the hyphen there. The word “multiple” is misused – it requires a singular noun, and there is no such thing as a “multiple time”. They should have used “several” or “many” instead.
Hey Jim…We have a retired Math Professor in residence, I’m curious as to what he thinks of the articles’ findings. As for me, being Math “challenged” (read dislike of), it just caused me to SMH! IMO, The Jumble shouldn’t be made subject to such microscopic dealings. It’s a game, it’s for fun and pleasure…But you do seem to take it seriously. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that)! ..😉, I just think you miss the forest for the trees. …You’re correct about the “multiple”. Multiple does means ‘containing many subparts’. A multiple homicide is a killing that involves many individual homicides. A multiple vitamin, or multi-vitamin, is a vitamin that contains more than one vitamin. If we mean that there are many instances of a thing, and not that the thing is made of many subparts that each qualify in their own right as instances of the thing itself, then the word we want is ‘many’ or ‘several’, not ‘multiple’. So, there I give you your props. But the “RE-VIEWS” as an answer is the pun, the play on words that’s the essence of a “Jumble”. “Great “Reviews” of the movie/”Re” Viewings. Seeing it more than once, liking it more and more each time. It’s whimsy, it’s fun…IT’S THE PUN. And what’s a GREAT Jumble solution without that PUN?…Think forest, Jim….I must say, as I’ve mentioned before, I’d hate to ever get into a debate with you. If for no other reason than that you’re relentless..😉 .(Not that there’s anything wrong with that)! And it’s obvious you’re very intelligent, which I, for one, truly appreciate in a man….But again, the Jumble’s just a game..I like to just “go” with it, as I believe most readers do…So, debate = No. But perhaps a drink or two?
