🕰 In the days before a MODEM and the like became the norm,
Was a man named William Clement with a clock of stately form.
So determined to perfect it, he would REJECT social fun,
And the drive to RATIFY his clock began to get humdrum.
But he knew that he could swing it and a HIKER he became,
Going back and forth with paperwork so he could claim his fame…
And after years, in England things finally did chime…
And all because Bill Clement made sure to MAKE THE TIME 🕰
After all the new words we’ve endured this week, today we get a reprieve…all old TIME favorites. Would you believe that between 2014 and today HIKER has appeared 10 TIMEs? And what really got me was that not once was it anagrammed the same! It’s only 5 letters! Talk about I before E, etc, etc…!!! Anyway, HOUR other words are all Repeat-Repeats also, with MODEM, appearing for the 6th TIME and being our most recent entry, dating back to October 16th ’18. None of HOUR words took much TIME in solving, but RATIFY did look like Tariff to a few of the Early Birds at first glance, and called for a SECOND look…So, on to HOUR cartoon…
Today we travel back to 17th century England, and find ourselves in the home of Mr & Mrs WILLIAM CLEMENT. Mrs Clement looking ever so fashionable in her Blonde Gibson Girl upSWEPT do and high ruffle-necked blouse, is ready to leave for the Opera, and goes looking for Bill. But Bill is so WOUND UP in MAKING his clock, that he REJECTs the invitation, and CHIMES in with the news that he’s going to spend a few more HOURS working…Wait a MINUTE, again? Poor Mrs Clement, always coming in SECOND…No wonder she looks a little TICKed off…But in answer to our question…William invented the GRANDFATHER CLOCK because he was able to…MAKE THE TIME.
Eye candy? With the panel shaded completely in Purple, the Brown color of the CLOCK and the Workbench definitely STANDs out. Beyond Mrs Clement, we see Patterned wallpaper, with Lattice work above it. The CLOCK is opened, and we see William with his right HAND inside the clocks’ PIT, and the PENDULUM, which is Gold, is being held. His left hand is adjusting the HOUR hand. A missing LINK though is that we don’t see the CHAINS. Perhaps it’s a little too EARLY in the process…On his workbench are the two Gold WEIGHTS, the clocks’ Gray DIAL, 3 Gray gears and a small Gray handle. A Brown Phillips head screwdriver lies nearby. Jeff’s expertly drawn the CLOCK to MINUTE detail, with flowers engraved on the upper door, and showing both the ornately-carved SPLIT PEDIMENT at top, and the PLINTH at the bottom, besides the little hook inside where the PENDULUM will HANG, and the tiny latch on the door. William, sporting long Grayish hair SWEPT up on the sides, is casually dressed for the TIME in a beige vintage draw-string shirt. Mrs Clement, as mentioned before, dressed in TIMEless elegance befitting her NIGHT at the Opera, is draped in layered Purple, with a White Collar. She’s seen with her right HAND rising up, in a SWINGing MOTION…But the eye candy today? If you look real closely…William has a single BEAD OF SWEAT on his brow…Maybe it’s TIME he took a break…So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And keep in mind…THYME waits for no man…but BAY LEAVES…🕰🙋🏻

Ratify was also problematic for this math guy,but given that solution the final puzzle didn’t take any time at all to solve.I had access to my newspaper this morning ,though a little late with the horrible weather conditions outside,zero degrees and a coating of snow.As a result we did not travel north to see or care for grand kids.
Good Morning, Professor. I think RATIFY is causing the pausing because it’s not a word we see all that often. And again, yes, the solve was pretty obvious. Knowing TIME had to be in there, it wasn’t much of a stretch to figure out the rest. Sorry you’re homebound, Prof, I know what a travellin’ man you are…and how devoted you are to those Little Ones. But I’m sure you and your wife could use the much deserved break, and of course, with these ridiculous weather patterns, it’s always better safe than sorry. I enjoyed your early Stones video. Do you know what show it was from? I noticed that there were some nice closeups of Brian, Bill, and Mick (natch), but hardly any of Keith and Charlie.
Ratify was also my hardest word. The answer was pretty much an instant blind solve, except I first thought of “Take the time” instead of “Make the time”.
Good Morning, Mike. Thank you. As a fellow aficionado, you know there must be at least a gazillion great pieces of music out there to choose from. I think besides love, it may be one of the most oft used lyrics…But it was first up on the reel-to reel that’s constantly at play inside this wacky head of mine, so…there it is! But of course, I had to go with the Johnny Cash, because…well…how much more obvious can we get here? 😉 In answer to your question..No, I’m not sure what show it’s from. Maybe later, if TIME permits, I can try to do some research. (Hint..hint…). And as for RATIFY? One of those words that, as I’ve said before…When was the last TIME you overheard it in cocktail party chatter? 😂 Your TAKE instead of make, good guess, but I think we were thrown a bone with the word “invention”. But personally? I think old Bill needed to MAKE some more TIME for his wife….Obviously she thought he was accompanying her to the Opera! Good morning. Agree that Ratify was the choice for hardest word. When it came to the cartoon,I had the same thought as Mike with the first word being Take. But since there was only two Ts,that quickly changed. I spent a good portion of the morning looking up Steely Dan from yesterday and even text a bocce friend to get his view of what I thought was the guy’s name not the groups name. He gave me five songs to check out. He puts them in his top twenty groups. I guess it’s not you guys, it’s me!! At least you can say I try other things. Just hard to gat passed this thick kraut brain. Nice work Angela, good song choices. First time hearing the Jonny Cash song. I have two of his albums but never heard that song which I enjoyed. Nice use of the words poem and puns. Until tomorrow stay well.

I so commend you on your new-found interest in these different musical genres! 👏🏻👏🏻 I feel like I do when one of my Littles catches on to the rhyme pattern when I’m trying to teach them poetry. 😉 Happy that I can open them up to new things…You really did some research here, huh? I think it’s great. And you’re wrong saying “it’s me”. We’re talking the 70’s, Paul..I’m sure you were working hard, raising kids, taking care of business, right? It stands to reason that you wouldn’t have been keeping up with the latest rock groups. In fact, if it wasn’t that my parents had gone on a cruise to the Bahamas, and my Father got SWEPT up into the romantic sounds of Steel Drums, I doubt He would have even considered the genre at all. So, there’s no call for you to doubt yourself. And anyway, there’s nothing wrong with being “stuck” on the music of the 50’s and 60’s, it was, and still is, some of the best stuff out there. And I’m laughing at “thick kraut brain”! If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard..”You got a thick head” (ever since I was a kid), I’d be a rich woman! 😂😂. We have that in common! ° The new MODEM was obviously a manufacturers’ REJECT, and only one more vote was needed to RATIFY that Bill, who purchased it, would end up a committee HIKER.
Best I can do, Angela. The local congressman, an avid outdoorsman and HIKER, was in a quandary whether to RATIFY or REJECT the bill concerning possible radiation problems with the electronic giant’s new MODEM creation.

Hi all – I saw EJECT just before REJECT; then saw FAIR and FAIRY, tried the ‘A’ at the beginning, then saw that RA led to RATIFY. Obvious that TIME was in the answer, and wrote the letters to see what other words they wanted.
I bet Mr. Clement was glad he had a good excuse to avoid going to the opera. It sounds more plausible than “I have to wash my wig”.
I got an extra laugh, because Bill Clement is the name of a fairly well known hockey player and announcer – and who was also the model in a print advertisement for a computer store (which was selling MODEMs – 6 degrees, Angela!)
Three things I particularly liked about your writeup:
One good Stones’ song leads to another with “Time Waits for No One”.
The Poe reference of “Pit and the Pendulum”.
And last but not least, the line “he knew that he could swing it” 😂. I’m sure he could, but so could Roger Miller, from England even!
