SAUCCE = ACCUSE

CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN THE STAND-UP COMEDIAN RAN OUT OF NEW IDEAS, HE WAS – – –

SWNDITTHIASE = AT HIS WIT’S END

Happy Thursday, Jumble friends! Today’s puzzle was very similar to yesterday’s game in that all of the anagrams were new while their solutions were recycled favorites. In my opinion, the anagrams featured today were much easier to solve with SAUCCE being the only one that took a few extra seconds to figure out. David did a great job of throwing us off course by leaving the two C’s coupled together in the layout which I immediately broke up. When nothing came to mind, I reverted back to the original anagram and happened to see the error in my ways after staring at it for a bit. Our oldest clue word of the day was THIRTY where it was scrambled as TTIYRH the last time we saw it on 2/13/17. SWOON was our most recent with an appearance on 6/8/18.

Today’s cartoon brings us to a comedy club where we see a comedian practicing his material. We’ve seen several cartoons in the recent past featuring a comedy club setting, but this one is identified as “Giggles” by the bubble-lettered sign in the background. The characters were drawn with impeccable detail which means that they’re not our ordinary Jumble folk. On the stage is a comedian that wasn’t familiar to me but seated next to him is a woman that looks like Lissa Sears.

Our comedian looks to be having some real trouble with his set, but his friend is right there offering up advice on how to improve. She suggests using props or impersonations to wow the crowd but our beleaguered funny man feels that he’s done it all before. Jeff perfectly captured the emotion that this guy is feeling by having him steady himself on the microphone stand with his left hand while his right one holds the mic down at his side.

There weren’t a lot of extra details in today’s piece with the cartoon relying heavily upon its caricatures to impress. The tiny sign on the table was very difficult to see but it says “two drink minimum” with a smiley face underneath. The brickwork behind the stage gives the club a “cellar” type of vibe which was also a very nice touch.

The final solution was a 12-letter anagram that solved into four words. The layout gave us many possible word choices with THE, HIS, and AND being at the top of my list. HIS seemed like the best place to start so I crossed out the letters. The flow of the cartoon sentence brought AT to mind leaving WIT’S END to found shortly thereafter. The final solution was a very stinky pun that definitely impressed, so well done David and Jeff! Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow! 🎤

      • Craziest weather, right? Warm, but a freeze coming again tonight…let’s hope the rain all runs off and doesn’t freeze over…Have a good one! ☔️🙋🏻

      • Am I seeing you at 52 degrees? That’s amazing – it’s 51 in Oakland right now, although heading for 62 later. I was surprised to hear that you’re feeding birds so soon; they must be hardy New Englanders indeed!

        • My thermometer shows 52 right on the button, Steve! It’s absolutely downpouring though…
I feed the birds all year long and even have a heater in the birdbath to keep their water from freezing. We have a bunch of wild turkeys that come to the feeder as well so I throw extra seed on the ground for them. I just can’t keep those darn squirrels away. They ALWAYS seem to find a way up the feeder. 🐿

  1. 🎶 Make ’em LAUGH, make ’em LAUGH…Don’t you know ev’ry one wants to LAUGH? My dad said, “Be an actor my son, but be a COMICAL one!”….And you could charm the critics and have nothing to eat…Just slip on a a banana peel, the world’s at your feet…Make ’em LAUGH, make ’em LAUGH, make ’em LAUGH!🎶 “Make ‘Em Laugh” – Donald O’Connor 1952 https://tinyurl.com/ybgt4gd8

😂 Some woman SWOON at actors, loving to watch them work,
While others favor singers, where a voice drives them berserk…
From 12 to way past THIRTY, we do these men adore…
But Stand-Up Comics? Do we swoon? I’m really not that sure.
It’s not that they’re not handsome, I’m not looking to ACCUSE,
It’s just that maybe laughter and the lust don’t so well fuse!
We don’t golf to make a DIVOT, but to this guy love I’ll send…
And I wish him luck so he’ll get past being AT HIS WIT’S END! 😂

I had a bit of a problem this morning getting an angle for the wording of my poem…but I also had a bit of an issue with a word. Not any of the anagrammed words, they were easy, breezy. But the answer? WIT’S end? Shouldn’t the apostrophe be after the S? WITS’ end? Yes, it may be sometimes seen before, but…is that correct? What do you think?

Anyway. It’s nice to see Jeff’s good friend, Lissa Sears again, whom we’ve seen a few times in the past, the last being May 8th, when she appeared with Drew Carey. Sears’ two previous appearances before that one were about STAND-UP COMICS too, both taking place at a favorite Comedy Club of Jeff’s: Zanies. On December 5th, ’17, she appeared in the cartoon with Jeff’s friend Nate Bargatze on stage, and on April 17th, ’18, she herself was performing at the mic, coincidently with another struggling comedian featured, he having words with the clubs’ manager. Today, we’re at the empty Comedy Club GIGGLES, where Sears is watching a comic, who I think may be Lenny Clarke,( the nose?) an actor and Giggles favorite, rehearse his act. Stressed out, feeling that he’s used up his best material, we hear him say that he’s “Done it ALL before”, and that was the key to the solution. He’s…AT HIS WIT’S END! Good one, David! You always leave us WIT a laugh!

Eye candy? Rust-orange shaded panel. Two tables with black chairs. The stage and the GIGGLES sign in bright yellow. We see Sears in a black T-shirt and jeans, a yellow awareness bracelet on her right wrist, (she’s a Breast cancer survivor and a staunch supporter), and a wristwatch on the other, and Lenny in a light blue sweater over a white shirt, with black pants. The candy? On the table near Sears, a tiny yellow card…with a GIGGLY face stating “2 Drink Minimum”! Cute! So…Cheers! Drink up! And there you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And I hope you have a day full of LAUGHTER! 😂🙋🏻

  2. Good morning. Somehow my almost completed post disappeared with my explanation of how I successfully solved today’s jumble. But since it vanished and has me most annoyed. Let’s just say I looked, saw and conquered it. My first version was a lot better but hey,did it,done it,move on. Thanks Mike and Angela for a plethora of information. Every time I use that word I see that dumb annoying girl from Storage Wars. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn! I know this may sound weird…but when did that ever stop me? The same thing happens to me once in a while, my screen goes blank. Right in the middle of my typing…Poof! Gone!…But it gets weirder…Are you on an I Product? Because I notice that if I tap on the screen a time or two, it all comes back. Can’t explain it, it just does. Anyway, if it ever happens again, give it a shot. Whatd’ya got to LOSE, right? 😉So, you had a Vidi, Vici, Veni moment? ( I just got it with the Latin today)! 😂 It was an easy go of it…Thanks for the Shout Out, and as always, you’re very welcome. As for plethora? You know I love that word, Paul…I hope you don’t have me in the same category as her! 😂😂 Have a good one, Brooklyn! Stay dry… 😂🙋🏻

  3. FYI: OOOPPSS!!! In the true spirit of Truth in Advertising, or in this case I guess Truth in Jumbling, I have to correct myself. I mentioned in my post that I thought the STAND-UP COMIC was Larry Clarke, but it turns out that it’s Jason Chatfield, https://tinyurl.com/y7encsmn, the New York-based cartoonist, illustrator & comic strip cartoonist. And it just so happens, that he was one of our featured guests during Guest Jumbler week 2017, where we saw his syndicated cartoon character, GINGER MEEKS, and the caffeine-overdosed Kangaroo. I just didn’t put it together this morning, and I can’t believe I didn’t recognize him, since I’ve seen him perform in Comedy Clubs in NYC! Egads, is my face red! So, Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa. (You can take the Latin out of the Mass, but you can’t take the Latin out of the Catholic School Girl)! 😂 So to make it up to you all, I’ve included a link to Jason’s story. I hope you enjoy it! 😂🙋🏻

  4. I joined the group having accuse look like caucus and giving me trouble , but having gotten accuse right ,the at wit’s end solution followed quickly. The mid western ice and snow storm meant my Wed papers were delayed to this morning. With brutal frigid below zero temps on the way, guess it’s still winter. Also what happened to global warming? Just asking.

  5. To ACCUSE THIRTY members of the animal house fraternity of creating the DIVOT holes at the local country club put the whole college faculty into a SWOON.

    • Chuck…I give you the full 🌟🌟🌟🌟 on this one! Major Kudos,👏🏻👏🏻 it’s brilliant! I can just see those stuffy old academians wiping their brows! 😂 I struggled with ACCUSE…again, like y’day, finding it easier to go past tense. This isn’t my first choice, but since it is a Family Blog, it’ll have to do! 😉 Hope you’re enjoying your day, Chuck! 😀🙋🏻

° So what…The man did make her SWOON…ever since she turned THIRTY.. and she was beginning to think that because they knew it, they enjoyed to ACCUSE her of covering up the DIVOT marks he made on the golf course…

  6. Hi all – DIVOT took a second look to get the V in the right place. We’ve seen ACC together so many times, I knew I should try that first and ignore the double letter trick. Then the answer really stumped me for awhile. I tried “IN HIS”, “IN THE” and “AN” something, and was about to give up when I finally saw that the first word could be “AT”, and that gave it away.

As usual, the colors in the Chronicle are all different – stage is brown, his shirt is red (good thing this isn’t Star Trek themed, or he’d really die on stage), the “Giggles” sign is blue.

Thanks for all the details, Mike and Angela. Funny that you’ve actually seen our comic perform!

Have a great day everyone, whatever the weather.

    • G..3 or 4 times, at least! And he’s hilarious too! I just didn’t think of him…I can’t get over how your colors differ so much. Two on-line sites, plus my papers are all in sync..but the Chron? 🙄 SMH! Steve, I’m surprised you didn’t get the idiom itself, without trying to work the letters. It’s a pretty common phrase, don’t you think? (Which is why I mentioned the apostrophe.) And the key: Comedy-wit…I think you just didn’t have that thinking cap on! 😉 Oh..We went up a degree, it’s now 59…And I have the news on…The weather caster’s using the word PLUNGING, 3 times so far..🎶Oh, What a Night..🎶😱 Hope you have a great day too, G! 🙋🏻

  7. Hi Everyone – I was stymied until I realized the third word of the answer must be a possessive and not a contraction like can’t or don’t.

    • Hi Caroline. Good Afternoon! That’s why I questioned the placement of the apostrophe. I’ve never known it to be written this way. I really felt it would throw people off. I got the phrase right away, but the grammar was bugging me. How’s the rain up by you? It’s relentless down here! 😥 Hope you’re day’s going well…🙋🏻

      • Hi Angela – It stopped raining here for now, but we had lots earlier in the day and ice yesterday. Is it causing problems in your area? Wishing you and everyone a great rest of the day, too.

        • Hi Caroline. Not my immediate area, luckily I’m nowhere near a flood zone. But the other side of the Island has problems. I’m just hoping the rest of the day and tonight isn’t as bad as they’re predicting…Stay safe, and I wish you a great day too. ☔️💦🙋🏻

      • The ad I just had to watch to play the second daily puzzle on Word Search World Traveler was for the “Grammarly” app. 😂😂 I didn’t install it, but I found the info below. I always thought it was “wit’s end”, so I learned something new today.

        https://grammarist.com/spelling/at-wits-end/
The idiom “at wits’ end” means to be very upset, or at the limits of one’s emotional or mental limitations. It’s commonly spelled at wit’s end, but we say at the end of my wits, not at the end of my wit, so at wits’ end makes more sense. The phrase originated in the King James Version of the Holy Bible in Psalms 107: 27. “They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.” The verse is speaking about people who go back and forth in their devotion to God.  The archaic definition of wit was knowledge. So the phrase meant the people were at the end of their knowledge, at the point where they must rely on faith.
This definition is generally not understood in modern day. A person may be at the end of their knowledge when he or she uses the idiom, but the intention is the frustration the person feels as a result of said lack of knowledge.
        Examples
Jenette said her family could not believe what was happening and were eventually at wits’ end. [IOL News]
Alluding to Russian involvement in the jet’s downing as alleged by Washington, Rutte conveyed the rage and frustration of the Dutch who he said were “at wits’ end” after being blocked from the crash site. [Yahoo News UK]”

Now we can all “Get WIT the program!!” 😂😂🙋🏻‍♂️

        • Poor Baby! You needn’t have checked out the app. I double checked myself this morning as soon as I saw it, and before I wrote it. I just googled “At wits end” (no apostrophe at all😂)…and it was the first thing up! 😂 Like we’ve said before…”What did we do before Google”?! But G…do you think I’d lie to you? 😉🙋🏻
