Happy Wednesday, everyone! Did you immediately notice a theme playing out with today’s cartoon? This is the first time that I can remember where Jeff has used bits and pieces from his panels earlier in the week to keep the story going. Often times I’ve commented that I’d like to see this sort of storytelling happen because it gives us a deeper look into the lives of our beloved Jumble characters. I know the Jumble cartoons aren’t a comic strip but it’s fun to see which elements Jeff chooses to expand his story and it gives the game a breath of fresh air!
Our puzzle began with clue words that were recycled favorites from the past. I’ll take a guess and pick SHREWD as the most difficult anagram of the day as they all came to me instantly upon first glance. Our oldest word of the day was BIRCH and it was scrambled as CRIBH the last time we saw it on 1/31/17.
The setting for today’s cartoon is a bathroom where we see two Jumble characters staring at a scale. The woman on the left, identified as Anne by the dialogue, is the person that we saw purchasing a talking scale yesterday at a department store. She politely asks the scale how it’s doing this morning and its response was rather verbose. It tells her that she’s feeling much lighter than yesterday and it asks if she’s been working out. Anne’s significant other has an upset look on his face and we learn from his dialogue that it told him he was getting fatter. That scale surely doesn’t mince words but it might mince a few pounds if you talk to it nicely like Anne did!
After reading the dialogue a couple of times it occurred to me that today’s cartoon was a bit out of continuity if we are to assume that this is the very next day. We saw Anne purchasing the scale yesterday so unless she didn’t eat anything and worked out all night, there’s no way that she’d have been “much lighter” as the scale suggests.
The final solve was an anagram consisting of 14-letters and the layout was absolutely stunning. It gave nothing away and if the quotes weren’t given to us, I’d have had a much more difficult time solving it. Looking at the letters I noticed that both TIGER and SHREWD could be found. I knew they wouldn’t be in the final solve but it’s always fun to play with the letters to see what words you can make. With playtime over, I got down to business and chose WEIGH as the word in quotes. With those letters crossed out I found WITH next and WORDS for the finish.
Do you think Jeff will continue this storyline within his cartoon tomorrow? I sure hope so but I have no idea how he’d do it! Have a wonderful Wednesday!!!

But no, the Scale won’t do all this…it only talks of pounds,
You might stand by your WINDOW to hear those other sounds…
But if you need an ego boost they’re both a tad absurd…
There’s danger with the window, and the scale’s just “WEIGH” WITH WORDS💃🏻🚶🏻
Yesterday I found myself giving an OUNCE of thought to that TALKING SCALE being purchased, and I had a feeling the Boys would take it UP A NOTCH, and give us MORE…(or LESS..depending)! And they didn’t fail me…Seeing this couple have a rapport with the WEIGHT du jour is worth it’s WEIGHT in gold! The voice, most likely a female Brit, seems to favor our girl ANNE, while our guy, WEIGHn isn’t getting an OUNCE of respect…Oh well. Maybe tomorrow, WEIGHn….PUT IT OFF ’til tomorrow…
Beautiful pastel shading in today’s panel. LIGHT and airy. She in a mauve towel, his a powder blue to match the panels’ background…which might be a mirror…But if it is? Wow…that must be a real PANE to clean…it’s HUGE! Single sink, in a COUNTER top of a LIGHT cream color. The SCALE, gray with red “eyes” supposedly serving as the digital read out. Eye candy? Our guy…Hair long enough to curl up at the neck, sideburns, bearded and mustached…a hairy dude, no? So then what’s up with that chest? One strand? I can’t BARE it…I need MORE! Good Morning, Chuck B. Definitely an eclectic group of words today. A bit of a struggle composing a rhyme and having them all relate to the cartoon too. I think it was hardest getting around WINDOW and TIGER, although the other 2 didn’t leave much wiggle room either! …Repetition unfortunately has to come into play…Despite it all, I hope you enjoy them…Wishing you a good one! 🙋🏻
° The WINDOW display showed a stuffed TIGER with a SHREWD smile sitting amongst a copse of BIRCH trees.
° A SHREWD idea he thought, while looking out the WINDOW, to plant the TIGER lilies under the BIRCH tree.
° The WINDOW paint color, listed as BIRCH, was too SHREWD a word in his opinion, since it looked more like the orange tint of a TIGER.
° They agreed that it was very SHREWD indeed, to place the last item of the Scavenger Hunt, a stuffed TIGER looking through a WINDOW pane, behind the old BIRCH tree.
° Sitting under the BIRCH tree, she softly hummed 🎶The Eye of the TIGER🎶 and thought it a SHREWD song that truly saw into the WINDOW of her soul…
The WINDOW of opportunity was closing for the SHREWD BIRCH bark canoe salesman as his campsite was being inundated by a TIGER streak.

Hey Chuck, Steve here. Have you ever checked out stories of The Northwest Angle in Minnesota for some laughs? The BBC also had a good story about areas of Belgium that surround Dutch enclaves, some of which in turn have their own Belgian enclaves. Growing up in Rhode Island, I got used to crossing state lines, but these are a whole different animal.

Good morning. I was surprised to see jumble at around 8:15 this morning but unable to see more than the answers. I was unable to get more by going in the back door and posted it on yesterday’s blog. Here it is some 2 hrs later and all is right with the world. My choice for the hardest word would be Shrewd, but only a slight hitch. Today i had that eye of the Tiger mentality after crashing yesterday. After writing down all the letters and seeing all the Ws, I was convinced Weigh was at least one of the words. Once I crossed off those letters the other two words fell into place. I haven’t been disappointed with the creators final answers in some time now. Thanks Mike on my your post. I was glad I was able to see it hours later. Angela, another smile with your pick on the song. Nice use of the various ways you used the words and like Mike all the extras. Has anybody noticed that for men at least, the older we get the higher up the towel goes? As young men it starts off at the waist especially when you’re in your 20s to 40s because you want to show off the 6 pack and chest. Then as you age the towel winds up under your arm pit. Maybe this year I’ll get back to wearing it low like I did for awhile about 5-6 years ago. Food for thought. Or, maybe not! Until tomorrow stay well.

My wifes best friend was having the same problem.My youngest son tells me that what I’m thinking is not what everybody else is thinking regarding the comment “Food for thought”. Hi all – Those were my thoughts exactly on the cartoon – what fun to continue the story line with the talking scale, but how can that continue tomorrow?
No problem with the words or answer today. Now that I’ve finally learned to recognize SRRUCE when I see it, is David trying to taunt me with BIRCH? Reminds me of the classic Monty Python episode “How to recognize different types of tree from quite a long way away”.
Ok Angela, here goes: The SHREWD but dishonest carpenter made a fortune by building the WINDOW out of BIRCH but passing it off as TIGER Maple.
And you thought the choice of cream color was a good demonstration of COUNTER intelligence, eh?
Mike, I’m thinking the new talking scale caught up on Anne’s weight history by talking to the refrigerator and the microwave. Beware of those connected appliances!

Thanks Angela. I knew watching all those episodes of “This Old House”, “New Yankee Workshop” and “The Woodwright’s Shop” would pay off someday, even though I barely touch a screwdriver these days, in any sense of the word.
We’re not in any danger of flooding; this house is raised above the street level, and the street itself is on a small hill. Our only worry like yours would be a tree limb taking out the electric wire, but that’s also not very likely.

Steve, I’d never heard of The Northwest Angle before today. I guess I always thought International Falls was located in that “hump” and always had the lowest temperature in the country. Now I know better. Thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out further..
