CARTOON ANSWER:

AFTER TEACHING THE SCOUTS HOW TO BUILD A CAMPFIRE, THE TROOP LEADER – – –

AWDKSTOSE = WAS STOKED

Happy Thursday, Jumble players! For the third time this week we have a brand new clue word making its debut into gameplay. Mr. Hoyt offered up BESTOW in an effort to befuddle our brains and this time it worked! It ended up taking me the longest time to solve which made it my pick for most difficult anagram of the day. The remaining three words were readily visible and took longer to write their solutions in the answer boxes than solve. Our oldest word this morning was AWFUL and it was scrambled as FALWU the last time we saw it on 2/2/16. On a final note, all of the anagrams were presented to us in alphabetical order.

Before I start my analysis of today’s cartoon, I’d like to take a moment to share some sad news with you. The online version of the Jumble game that I use to enlarge and see all of the unique details within the cartoon has decided to change their format. They still print the Jumble but they post today’s cartoon very late in the afternoon which is well after I write my post. Unless anyone knows of another website that offers the cartoon in a larger format, I’ll be forced to comment on what is readily visible and update my post later in the day with all of the tiny details that you can’t see in the newspaper copy. This makes me a very unhappy camper, but today’s panel offered up a group of happy ones that I’ll do my best to tell you about.

The setting for today’s panel brings us to a clearing in the woods where we encounter four Jumble characters. Three of them are young boys and they are all seated around a glowing campfire. The cartoon sentence informs us that they are a pack of scouts and that they’ve just been taught how to build a proper fire. The scout leader is overjoyed at the scouts progress and he can be seen doing a happy dance. He’s also waving his marshmallow stick high above his head while holding up his right index finger to indicate that his troop is #1. I noticed that the troop leaders right foot is awfully close to the campfire and if he isn’t careful he’ll soon be giving the kids a lesson in first aid!

The final solve was an anagram consisting of 9-letters. The layout was cryptic but the leading nature of the sentence brought WAS instantly to mind as the first word. Crossing out those letters allowed me to find STOKED after a few moments of staring at the cartoon. Be sure to stop back later in the day for updates on the tiny details that I couldn’t make out and please vote below for the anagram that stumped you the most. Have a terrific Thursday!!!

  1. Good Morning, Mike. Causing a GRUMBLE ๐Ÿ˜ฅ with the JUMBLE! Let’s hope it’s just a fluke! Wishing you a great day! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Exactly. You know how early I awaken..3 o’clock, nothing,..4 o’clock…nothing..5 o’clock…NOTHING! I wrote anyway, with the heaviest of hearts…Double duty isn’t the end of the world, but it’s just nowhere near the same..I’m still hoping it’s some kind of adjustment. And hopefully they’ll answer my impassioned plea๐Ÿ˜‰ and tell me so…Sigh..๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        • Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll let us know if you hear anything and Iโ€™ll do the same. I saw that the scout leader had a badge on his shirt but couldnโ€™t read what it said. ๐Ÿ˜ข

          • Eerily..Exactly again! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I squinted and squinted…until I realized that my eye sight and my inTENTS fear of developing crows feet were both bigger than the need to read that badge! ๐Ÿ˜‚I’m pretty sure something’s written on it..Last time out, the Troop was called the “Happy Campers”. REMAINS to be SEEN who we have today…And yes, if they write back and enLIGHTen me, I’ll let you know…๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • I know what you mean…My paper prints in beautiful vibrant color. I get the E-Edition too, which shows up in my Email usually around 4:30-5AM, and it’s a pretty good sized panel. So i even did a screenshot, and blew that up! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I did get to see some details, but not enough of the badge. There seems to be wording on both the top and bottom, each printed in a circular arc. An image of a symbol of some sort is shown in the middle…but it was all just a little too vague to read..๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • The day is half over for most of us at 10am! Even my post at 9am is late in the Jumble world but itโ€™s the only time I have free to get it done. Maybe Iโ€™ll start posting the answers after midnight and filling the rest in later. I dunno………. ๐Ÿ˜•

              • Hey Mike..Steve’s right. It’s up now. And it is the same Troop..The Happy Campers..with the same image of a Basic Ridge Tent. But I so agree..10AM? Yikes! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • That “dot” PDF after each of the features has me concerned…But it is showing up 3-4 hours earlier than y’day…Keep praying that it’s just an adjustment of some sort…๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • A RUMBLE in the JUMBLE? Well, I do see FOREMAN in the cartoon. Maybe theyโ€™re all named GEORGE! ALIeve it at that. ๐ŸŽตโ€George, George, George of the JUMBLE…โ€๐ŸŽต ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

      • LOL!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Very clever..Really! Very! But if I groan any louder, I’m going to rupture something!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  2. ๐ŸŽถ Love me TINDER love me long…Take me to your HEARTH…
For it’s there that I belong…And will never part…Love me TINDER, love me true, all my dreams fulfill…For my Darling I love you, and I always will…๐ŸŽถ “Love Me Tender” – Elvis 1956 https://tinyurl.com/yc9bwxr6

๐Ÿ”ฅ It’s good to BESTOW on a Scout the wonder of outdoors,
To DRINK in Natures’ beauty and to toast yourself some s’mores.
Sure some things can get AWFUL, wildlife that comes to prey…
Just don’t EXPOSE your food and you’ll most likely be ok…
The camping, and the friendships, the meals that have been smoked…
And building that first fire? Yea, you’d see why he WAS STOKED ๐Ÿ”ฅ

A few weeks ago, on December 21st, Jeff brought us outdoors to a Campsite, when David’s puzzle answer was WHAT HE’D “TAUT”….RemEMBER? Well, I’m KNOT sure if we’re at the same Campsite, but we do see that our Scout Leader isn’t the same guy, and the uniforms are a little more…well, uniform. Different STOKES for different Folks? Yes, looks like all new CHARacters…And where that day we dealt with knot tying, today we’re concentrating on learning to build a fire. We see our Troop Leader jumping for joy, three young scouts reacting to his euphoria, and our featured BURNING issue, the CAMPFIRE. Our CHARacters are excited, as we can see from our diaLOG. “You guys are the best scouts”, “He’s excited”..They’re all “stoked”. As for the fire? Take it from a woman who’s KINDLEd with a certain FLARE a time or two…There’s 2 critical stages to a good fire: Starting and Stoking. Stoking means keeping it ABLAZE. If you want a fire to keep burning you need to keep feeding it, you need to keep stoking it. How do you stoke a fire? Simple. Shift the wood around to make sure the pieces are close enough together to feed on each otherโ€™s flame, and put more wood on when the wood that’s burning has been mostly consumed. Stoking…So in answer to our question…The Troop Leader…WAS STOKED! Good one, David! As always, when it comes to Jumbling…you’ve managed to ๐ŸŽถLight My Fire๐ŸŽถ…https://tinyurl.com/y7hkh2mc

Eye candy…Black silhouetted trees lining the background. A red domed tent. Rocks surrounding the fire. Troop Leader, FIRED up, raising his right index finger triumphantly into the AIR. Two smiling scouts, a third, in glasses and wearing a wristwatch, looking a LITtle surprised, a LITtle inTENTS…A single LOG…Everyone in Khaki shirts with gold neckerchiefs and black cargo shorts. Hmm. Eye candy?…WOOD you believe there’s nothing really SPARKING my interest? I’ll just go with what’s sweet…Those marshmallows on everyone’s stick…They SOOT my mood…So, There you have it, Folks…Done! Have a great day, Everyone…Here’s hoping you get to sit back today, relax in an easy CHAR, and just reFUEL. And I hope you all enjoyed this…You know I always FLAME to please…๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Yes, same HAPPY CAMPERS troop BADGE on the leader from another camp scene. SomethIng to do with INTENSE for IN TENTS or vice versa.

      • Hi Clay. Yes, we saw it now, but the on-line puzzle went up 7 hours later than it usually does. I’m sorry though, I’m not following the INTENSE comment….๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • The pun that day was “in tents” I think there was fighting about where to put the tents so the situation was “intense” replaced by “in tents”

        • Oh, ok. I see what you mean now, Clay. You’re confusing 2 different former puzzles. A little while ago, on December 21st, we had a Boy Scout puzzle at a campsite about tying knots. The troop was the Happy Campers, and the answer was WHAT HE’D “TAUT”. The puzzle you’re speaking of, with the solution being a “TENTS” SITUATION, was printed back on September 11th. That puzzle was about a group of people at a campsite where the campground was very small and crowded, and as a result the tents were all pitched too close to one another. A confrontation ensued because the campers were all too intense…Good memory on the camping connection though! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Hope you’re having a good one, Clay! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • After crossing out WAS, I thought that STOKED was still very well โ€œhiddenโ€. Finding the -ED suffix was the clincher. Happy Thursday, Chuck!

  3. Good morning. Sorry I never got back to you guys last night. Had a nice time even though I lost a third of my winnings. But hey,I’m still playing on their dime so I can’t complain. I won the free trip last month and had $50 in comp plus $25 comp for lunch so I really can’t be upset. Oh,this is the Gods truth. I sat down to play a machine and the lady to my right just won $10,345.00 on a penny machine playing just .88 cents a shot. Today’s jumble was a little challenging. Awful took me five minutes to get which was my choice for hardest word. After starring at the letters for the cartoon,I got Stoked first. Another cute finish. Thanks Mike for all you do. It was interesting to see how much we missed from just using the paper. We will still love you the same if they don’t go back to their old ways. Angela, great use of the words, poem and songs. The second one was the perfect fit. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • $10k?!?!?! That must be an unbelievable rush to win that much on just 88 pennies!!! Congratulations to her!!! Iโ€™m happy to hear that your trip was enjoyable even though you werenโ€™t the big winner.

No worries about not getting back on yesterdayโ€™s game. Iโ€™m glad you focused on having a good time and gave the Jumble a rest. It was interesting that you found STOKED first and I wonder how many others did as well.

Iโ€™m really bummed about not being able to see the fine details in the cartoon. They really are the highlight of my morning and I get excited telling everyone about them. Itโ€™s a big blow but hopefully (fingers and toes crossed) itโ€™s just a bug that theyโ€™ll work out. Enjoy your Thursday, Paul. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I encountered a similar casino story several years ago when walking through ( not playing) the Seneca Indian casino in Salamanca NY,when a lady playing a penny slot machine won over $1000 on a spin.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn! Wow…That woman sure had the HOT seat, huh? Glad to hear you came home a winner. Thanks for the Shout Outs…and I wasn’t really sure if you’d like the Doors. TBT, it was pulling for first, but I just couldn’t get the TINDER out of my head…Then I saw the video? …and I STILL can’t get THAT out of my head!! Young Elvis? With that sneering lip? ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅPhew! Be still my HEARTH!’ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Have a good one, Brooklyn! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  4. Hi all – The โ€˜Xโ€™ exposed the last word, and BESTOW took an extra look, but I do love the word SEWBOT – it SEAMS that it applies to most of the new machines that will sew little dinosaurs on shirt pockets or towels if you ask them to.
Had to write the letters to see STOKED.

Has anyone ever gotten a fire started by the clichรฉ of rubbing two sticks together? Not me.

Angela, Mikeโ€™s concerned that if the scout leader isnโ€™t more careful outDOORS, that blaze might ๐ŸŽตโ€become a funeral pyreโ€๐ŸŽต

Have a great day, everyone. Hope the early online Jumble returns for the time-zone impaired. ๐Ÿ˜‚

    • It’s not a clichรจ, G…Friction. Yea…Been there..done that!’๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚!!! OutDOORS! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Good one! And ironically, that was always my favorite line of the song…๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Ray Manzarak said that was the line that impressed him when Morrison recited it to him.
โ€œIf I was to say to youโ€…..not so much; bad grammar! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

        • Yep. See that? The best of the mediocre minds! Great line…And, oh yea…I’m sure grammar was key! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  5. โ€œA morning news EXPOSร‰ about ingredients stopped the scoutmaster just as he was about to BESTOW an AWFUL DRINK on his campers.โ€

    • Good one! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป! Kudos! I wanted to throw an “EXPOSรˆ” in my post this morning, but I didn’t want to push the envelope…But I always really liked the pronunciation of the word.

ยฐ If he was to BESTOW upon them information on how much he used to DRINK, it would read like an AWFUL EXPOSรˆ…

      These were my others…
ยฐ In an attempt to EXPOSE them to, and at the same time BESTOW knowledge of, the AWFUL things that excessive DRINK can cause, he considered taking them to his AA meeting…

ยฐ All it took was one sip of the new DRINK to realize how AWFUL it was…so he decided to BESTOW upon the Cola Company his intention to EXPOSE their shoddy production practices.

ยฐ She sat in the garden, happy to DRINK in its’ beauty…and wished she could EXPOSE the others to it, and BESTOW to them that not everything about this new location was AWFUL.

        • ROTFL! That’s exactly what I was thinking of! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Soooo funny! Oh God, remember that? What a fiasco it was! Something was going on behind those scenes for sure… ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  6. Well late again – the most awful drink I ever had was Cub Scout bug juice otherwise known as Kool Aid. As campers we finally had to expose our pack leader as a sugar junkie which led the Boy Scout Council to bestow upon him an immediate suspension due to cruel and unusual punishment . But fear not – that right foot you see also became a hot foot after he teetered from the sugar rush he suffered from not sweetening our drinks.

    • LOL…Hi Jim..Never too late. I like your scenario, ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป and it even seems to have a ring of truth to it…Makes it more interesting…It’s funny your mentioning this, though. The past few days, we’re inundated here with a new commercial regarding sugar and soda. Comparing it to smoking. And it was even discussed with the resident medical contributor on one of the morning shows. Newest campaign, and none too soon…Anyway, Kudos on your contribution here, it definitely paints a picture…Especially the bug part…I remember it all too well! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Here’s to a good night,๐Ÿท Jim! Enjoy! ..(Oh..wait..how much sugar’s in wine, anyway)? ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป
