Happy Thursday, Jumble fans! Although there weren’t any new clue words this morning, David offered up four brand new anagrams in an attempt to get us to wave our white flag of surrender. It definitely wasn’t the first two words with both of them coming instantly upon first glance. The last two were rather challenging, and rightfully so, with only one puzzle remaining before the weekend. PLURAL took the most time for me to decipher which earns it the title of most difficult anagram of the day. TENTH is the oldest word in the quartet with with its last appearance on 3/16/17 and jumbled as HENTT.

There’s nothing more exciting than a medieval battle scene filled with swords, knights in shining armor, and a king in a castle. Jeff provided all of the above elements to turn today’s cartoon into an instant Jumble classic. The panel features a group of brave souls that are plotting to besiege a castle in a very hostile takeover. The dialogue between the men indicates that the campaign won’t be a cakewalk and that they’ll continue their forward progress at all costs.

There were plenty of extra details within today’s cartoon to keep our attention long after the solve. The little scar on the right cheek of the knights face was a hidden gem that lets us know that he’s been battle tested before. We also see a plethora of weaponry from the period including seven polearms with extremely sharp points. There’s also a large sword being held by the brains of the operation that has a minimally decorated cross-guard and an oversized pommel. Looking closely at the castle in the background you can spot a group of eight men that are ready to protect their king at all costs. The castle is small in size but it did have indented parapets for extra visual appeal. Lastly we see The king in the middle of the group and he’s wearing a four-pointed crown and a stoic look upon his face.

The final solve consisted of an anagram containing 12-letters. The layout was extremely cryptic and kept the solution well hidden. The dialogue and sentence focused on the castle being built on the “highest point” and the difficulty they’d have reaching it. Spotting the U in the anagram brought UPHILL to mind leaving BATTLE to be found a few moments thereafter. Today’s cartoon is a perfect example of how the pun is truly mightier than the sword.     We see Crusaders, lances drawn, a Dragon on their crest…
    A little PANIC setting in…the climb to reach their prey?
    A mile broken down, a TENTH?…enough cause for a fray.
    “A PEBBLE of an obstacle” is uttered by Head Knight…
    “Keep climbing, just keep climbing” said in PLURAL on this night.
    “We came to storm the Castle, to pillage and to loot…
    It’s difficult but must be done…so just hike up your boots…”
    And storm the Castle’s what they did, despite presence of rattle,
    A fight’s a fight, does matter not if it’s an UPHILL BATTLE 🗡🛡

    No FIGHT to the finish with our puzzle today, the PUN proving mightier than the SWORD, with a particularly large propensity for”P” words! Easily solved, with time to SPEAR…especially with Jeff’s’ great depiction of the steep CLIMB, and that well-worn path; and Davids’ question JOUST aBOUT giving it right UP! We see two spots of Black foliage way beyond the entire panel of Green rolling HILLs. The Green matches the Dragon on our leaders’ shield, held under his right ARM..OR is that his left? Yes, his left. Sorry..I BATTLE with being DIRECTIONally CHALLENGEd. Warriors on both sides ARMORED in BATTLE Gray, and whatever hair showing is colored Brown, as is the large wooden door to the Castle. There are two tiny SMASHES of brightness..the Golden guards of the SWORDS…Two large stones are shown along the path UP the HILL, as are two small LANCES in the grass. The Castle is manned by 8 defenders, 4 with grimacing faces drawn, and 4 in blackened silhouette. LANCEd the LOT? No, only 6 of them are armed. And the bearded King wears his Crown. The marauders only number 4 in total, the one farthest left BATTLE-scarred jaggedly along his right cheek. Hmm. Are you THINKING what I’m THINKING? Only 4 of them? Yes, we CONQUER… Hopefully there’s MOOR KNIGHTs ‘N DAY background….And for Eye Candy? If you look real closely at the Door to the Castle? There’s a Ring Door Knocker! Well that surely RAPS it UP! A-TAC, A-TAC, A-TAC? …AnyBLOODY home? So, There you have it, Folks! Done! Have a great day, Everyone…And may you be SPEARed any BATTLES! 🛡🗡🙋🏻

  3. No PANIC ensued in the TENTH grade class when students were asked to spell the PLURAL of PEBBLE.
    Thursday’s Jumble was a tad more challenging but not overly taxing. Plural took me the longest look and the verbal clues in the cartoon led me to the solution.

      The teacher felt a sense of a PANIC as she realized that at least a TENTH of her students misspelt the word PEBBLE in it’s PLURAL form.

  4. Indeed plural was toughest as it looked like burlap but minus the “b”. The fact that the solution started with “an” rather than ‘a’ meant it started with a vowel ,which lead quickly to uphill followed less quickly by battle.

    • Excellent observation, Chuck! I’ll have to keep that in mind when we see a sentence starting with an. The two T’s together brought BATTLE into view quicker than if they were further apart. It was still a cryptic layout that gave nothing away. All my best for a great day! 🙂

  5. Good morning. Thanks Mike for a plethora of information. Boy how I had that word ever since the ding bat from storage wars uses it quite often. Earl another masterpiece of a sentence. You’re like the Rembrandt of paintings. Angela,not one but two from “old blue eyes”. A double treasure. Nice job from the words to the poem and puns. Today’s jumble was a no brainer. Agree with mike that Plural was the most difficult. The other three words were instant solves. Same thing with the cartoon answer. The answer popped into my head right away. I just had to check with the letters to make sure. Sorry I never got back last night. Had a great time and lost under $80.00. At one point I was into my 5th hundred but had two nice comebacks on two games. I also wound up with a free trip next month. My name was picked out. Someone wins it every month. A $25 lunch was on the casino. We play bingo on the way down and movie on the way back. What’s not to like. Especially when it’s with good friends. Until tomorrow stay well.

      • You’re right Angie. It cost you $35:00 to go but you get it back on slot machine play plus $15:00 extra from casino plus $25:00 free lunch for the second time. Be funny if it was the same church, Saint Columba. It’s not my parish but that’s the one we use.

        • Hey Paul..Yes that sounds right, because the lunch was included too. It was all free and then some in reality. But the Church was my parish on Avenue W, Our Lady of Grace. I think it was with the Knights of Columbus. Or maybe the Holy Name Society, I can’t remember exactly right now. I think most of the parishes in Brooklyn run the same type of trips, don’t they? All I know is, she loved the whole thing, and would always talk about the laughs they had on the bus…🙋🏻

  6. Hi all – PEBBLE and PLURAL took an extra look, with PLURAL being the hardest.

    I just have one suggestion for the King – next time build the walls a little higher! The door barely fits, and it looks like the enemy could just polevault in. Keeping a moat filled at that height might be a challenge (unless you filled it with alligators.)
