CARTOON ANSWER:

HE LIKED TO GAMBLE BY PLAYING ROULETTE AND THEN BLACKJACK OR – – –

EEVSRICVA = VICE VERSA

Happy first day of November, Jumble geniuses! David started the month off by offering up our daily anagrams in alphabetical order. Although they were all recycled favorites, one in particular took a bit longer to work through. CAVIAR stumped me just enough to earn the title of most difficult anagram of the day. It was the exact same anagram as the last time we saw it on 5/18/17, but figuring out the placement of the two A’s had me frazzled. The oldest clue word of the bunch was purify and it was last used in gameplay on 12/11/16.

The setting for today’s cartoon brings us to a casino where we see several Jumble characters working the tables. The main action is occurring up front where a gentleman is about to begin playing cards. The dialogue of the dealer suggests that she has encountered this frequent flyer before and seems to know his playing routine. The player explains that he usually starts with roulette but he’s switching it up and going with blackjack first.

Our dealer is drawn with a friendly smile and she is dressed in a vest and bow tie. Her left hand is hovering over the shoe which indicates that gameplay is about to begin. The gambler is decked out in an oversized cowboy hat with a decorative feather decoration on the front. His glasses are also oversized and give him the appearance that he’s one serious card shark. I also noticed that his facial hair is neatly groomed but it was his nose that struck me the most — it’s huge! His left pinky finger has a small ring and his right hand is clutching a martini glass with a single olive on a stick.

In the rear of the panel we see a couple of Jumble characters playing roulette. The woman is placing a single chip on the board with her right index finger while a man can be see chomping on his tongue as decides where to place his bet. In his left hand is a large drink glass that contains a small umbrella, straw, and a fruit garnish on the rim.

The letter layout for the final solution was an anagram consisting of 9-letters. The dialogue of the gambler was very similar to the cartoon sentence and informs us that he sometimes plays the tables in the reverse order. The two V’s in the letter layout brought VICE VERSA to mind making this one an instant solve. Since the solution had VICE in the answer, it was only fitting that the panel setting be a casino with a couple of intoxicating beverages on display! Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. Good Morning, Mike. We seem to be DEALing with a lot of Gambling lately! Have a great day! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  2. ๐ŸŽถ You’ve got to know when to HOLD ‘EM ..(when to hold ’em)…Know when to FOLD ‘EM (when to fold ’em)…Know when to WALK AWAY, and know when to run…You never COUNT YOUR MONEY when you’re sittin’ at the TABLE..There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done…๐ŸŽถ “The Gambler” – Kenny Rogers 1979

    โ™ฃ๏ธ ๐Ÿ’ฐToo bad we couldn’t bet on this…the dialogue alone…
Enough for any EAGLE-eye to solve by what it’s shown.
The repetition with “what’s first”, does surely PURIFY,
Like CAVIAR it’s rich and bold, and served to satisfy.
But just like what a VIRUS brings, the gambling bug does bite
Between Blackjack and Roulette one can “wage” a mighty fight.
So just be sure to play it smart, and not end up the curser…
The “House” is not your home you know…and here there’s no VICE VERSA! ๐Ÿ’ฐโ™ฃ๏ธ

Uh, weren’t we just in the Casino playing Blackjack on September 28th? And we’re back again today? So soon? Hmm. This is a real EYE- ROLLER! What’s the DEAL here? Does someone have a GAMBLING obsession? Listen…Those CASINO lights? Don’t be fooled. Believe me, you really don’t have a chance. It’s all just LAMPS TO THE SLOTTER. Trust me…Anyway…Today, the “V’s” definitely stand for Victory! With the words all old easy favorites, and the dialogue and question’s reiteration TIPPING THEIR HAND…or should we say…PUTTING ALL THEIR CARDS ON THE TABLE.. or…VICE VERSA…It was a SURE THING today! Great job, Guys…You’re a good PAIR!

Eye candy? ODDS are the Gamblers may be “real PLAYERS”…But then again…Don’t we all think we are??!! ๐Ÿ˜‰…Only thing is, I’m in a terrible rush…Holy Day of Obligation, have to get to Mass, out-of-town friends are at my house…came in for the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade last night, and the NY Marathon on Sunday…So, there’s no time to PLAY, and I’ll just DEAL with this real quick..Is it the Roulette players tongue hanging out, the impressive bet he’s making, or his Mai Tai? Is it our Blackjack players flamboyant Cowboy hat, his Martini with that Green olive, (great detail), his trendy purple shades…or those cool Brown Cowboy Boots? No, I think today I’ll just make it the CHIPS…Take a look at the DEALER’S tray…See all those Red Chips? Nickels? What’re we playing? Pokeno? And there’s some Yellow ones in there, and in front of our Cowboy, but Yellow’s a complete toss-up, depending on where you’re gambling…So, I’m just going to LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY, and go with them…And I’m BETTING the Color Man’s not a Gambler! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And keep in mind…Spending time in Vegas or Atlantic City? Here’s a tip: SPEND your money on a show. That way when it’s over and you “Give them a BIG HAND”?…You’ll be clapping instead of crying…๐Ÿ’ฐโ™ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. Good morning. Thanks Mike and Angela for all your input. From the extras to the song choice you guys rolled a seven, there were no snake eyes ๐ŸŽฒ๐ŸŽฒin either ones delivery. No problem again with either the words or cartoon answer. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Hey Brooklyn.Good Morning! No alternate side today! Eureka! ๐Ÿ˜‚Thanks for the Shout Out, Bud, and you’re very welcome. Our favorite Saints must really be blessing us today, because it’s beautiful out, and going to 70! Perfect day for Bocce…Enjoy! Talk to you later! Ciao, Bello! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  4. The renowned scientist, who began research as an EAGLE scout., found a way to PURIFY the contaminated CAVIAR of a virulent VIRUS.
Mike, once again so many details that your EAGLE eye caught and i missed. Later I plan to go to a different site and enlarge the cartoon to see if I can find anything you overlooked!
Angela–great song choice and very very spot on, if you are counting in BlackJack.
I appreciate your poem as a casinophobe–playing slots is a vice I have seen hurt many.
Know nothing about roulette or the chips, so interesting you pointed out the various colours.
Both you and Mike focused in on the tongue-action of one of the players—shades of Michael Jordan, eh???
Last thought: I wonder what the origin of the phrase VICE VERSA is? There is a NPR radio show which deals with words and phrases, maybe I should send them an e-mail. Or just go Google.

    • Thanks, Earl! Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll find something that I overlooked. Vice Versa is Latin and literally means โ€˜in-turned position.โ€™

Great sentence as always! The CAVIAR bit made it extra stinky! Be well!

    • Good Morning, Earl. I hope the rain stopped up your way. We’ve got a beautiful day going here…woke up to temps in the 50’s and it’s only going to get better…The rain’s HOLDing off until tomorrow night…Thanks for the Shout Outs and the Poem Nom. I know how you feel about gambling…A lot of woulda, shoulda, coulda…You made me smile with the Michel Jordan reference. Do you know that it’s called that now? Not the protrusion syndrome anymore? Now it’s the Michael Jordan syndrome? I guess it’s more common than we know…But here, in the Jumble, you know it’s more a Jeff thing…๐Ÿ˜‚ Like your “spot on” reference, very apropos! And the chips thing…well, as we’ve been told, whoever does the coloring here? Not the sharpest crayon in the box! And your sentence today has me wondering…Was that contamination detected before or after purchase? That’s an expensive endeavor buying Caviar..I could see it causing quite a ROE between the party giver and the seller! I SHADder the thought! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Have a good one, Talk to you later. Ciao, Bello! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  5. The phrase is straight from the Latin: ” the order being reversed”. Vicis versa or something like that.

    • LOL..Earl..I took 4 years of Latin…and ODDly enough?…All I seem to remember is the VICE part! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  6. Caviar took me the longest to solve so it’s my vote for the hardest word today. Other than that, no problems figuring out the rest of the words or the cartoon answer. Happy Thursday everyone.

  7. I also studied Latin for 4 years along with Classical Greek for 2 years in HS.I remember “veni, vidi, vici”.As far as today’s puzzle,I had to back into caviar,as avarice was sticking in my mind, but given the final vice versa solution,I could back into caviar.

    • Hey Professor! How’re you doing? I did the 4 years of Latin, with 2 of French, and a sprinkling of Italian. I did it along with the English and journalism courses to help wth my writing. There’s a lot to be said about knowing the roots of words…I was never able to swing the right schedule to take Greek, so I just let it go..Besides, I already had enough people telling me that I was systematically killing 3 languages, so I figured it was all for the best! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Hope you’re having a good one, Chuck! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  8. Hi all – So I just have to mention CASINO yesterday and it shows up today? What are the ODDS?
CAVIAR took a third look, and thatโ€™s an interesting counterexample to the double letter rule. Since the puzzleโ€™s not in Dutch, putting two Aโ€™s together doesnโ€™t work. Right offhand, I canโ€™t think of any English word besides proper names with that combo. Aardvark, but thatโ€™s probably straight from Dutch or Afrikaans.

Besides the game vices mentioned, thereโ€™s also a craps table in the foreground and slot machines in back, and the guys are drinking. All Jeff left out were the cigarettes.
What caught my eye though were the drinks. Arenโ€™t they awfully froo-froo for those guys, especially a cowboy with a soul patch? He looks like George Thorogood; he should be holding ๐ŸŽตโ€One bourbon, one Scotch and one beerโ€๐ŸŽต His attire also seems a bit ill-SUITED, given the ten gallon hat.

Anyway, have a great day everyone.

    • PS – The Chronicle colorist struck again, making it look like the cowboy was wearing a blue suit. Online, it looks much more like a cowboy vest, so ok. I only get in trouble commenting on fashion anyway! ๐Ÿ˜‚

      • LOL…Steve…You ALWAYS get in trouble commenting on Fashion! ๐Ÿ˜‰ You’ve got to leave it alone! He’s wearing a a Teal Western-cut jacket, with Jeans. The Jeans are tucked into the requisite Brown cowboy boots. All in all, having seen enough of these rich Fashion-challenged men in western Casinos…Jeff’s captured him perfectly. And the “color guy” really didn’t do so bad either. As a rule, they’re usually flamboyant…Fahion-challenged, and foolishly flamboyant.๐Ÿ˜‚ Different strokes for different folks! So, music, check…Fashion, not so much! Have a good one, G! ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • G, ..Off the top of my head, there’s BAAED, there’s BAZAAR, there’s probably others..Good topic to research…But the drinks? Unless you’re a die-hard Scotch drinker? When these guys get into Casinos, and win a little money, and start drinking on the house, comped? They all get antsy… Mai tais, Martinis, Margaritas…(a lot of “M’s)! …anything that screams ” flamboyance” ๐Ÿ˜‰ It just goes with the territory…So, no, not too froo-froo for these guys…And I’m sure, like me, Jeff’s seen enough of them to know! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿน๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • I agree with you about the drinks, Steve. Iโ€™m sure they seemed a little off due to the fact that VICE was part of the answer and Jeff wanted them to stand out and be noticed.
The gambler did look odd in those clothes and at first I thought we were seeing the return of our โ€œwealthy coupleโ€. No such LUCK, though! Take care, my friend. ๐Ÿ™‚
