OLDFO = FLOOD

MRKSEO = SMOKER

CASIOF = FIASCO

CARTOON ANSWER:

SLEEPY HOLLOW’S LEGENDARY HORSEMAN LIKED TO RELAX BEFORE HE HAD TO – – –

THRWFODOKEFAO = HEAD OFF TO WORK

Ghoul-morning, Jumble friends, and Happy Halloween! It was such a treat to open the newspaper and find a spooktacular Halloween themed puzzle waiting in the comics section. David started off gameplay by arranging the anagrams in reverse alphabetical order and then offered up a new clue word in THREW. The word that haunted me the longest was SMOKER and it took an extra minute or so before coming into view. The oldest clue word of the pack was FIASCO with its last appearance in the game on 8/27/16.

Today’s cartoon featured a character that we’ve seen numerous times this year so it was only fitting that he return once again on Halloween. Within the panel we see our old friend, the Headless Horseman, resting comfortably in a chair. His dialogue states that he’s going to go the extra mile by giving everyone in Sleepy Hollow a major fright tonight. His wife can be seen tenderly touching his pumpkin head and smiling as she listens to his plan.

There were a few fun details within the panel that caught my attention. The Horseman’s boots are waiting by the side of his chair and there is a small buckle on each one. His wife is holding a cast iron pot by its’ handle as if she’s about to place it on the fire. My favorite detail had to be the mug that ol’ pumpkin head is holding. It has a small shield logo on the front as well as a tiny crack on the top left side!

The letter layout for the final solution was 13-letters in length. It was extremely cryptic which left the solution well hidden. Since the cartoon featured the Headless Horseman, I figured HEAD would be in there. Crossing out the letters brought WORK into view leaving OFF and TO for the finish. Have a wonderful Halloween, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. 🎢 You go to my HEAD…And you linger like a HAUNTING refrain, and I find you spinning round in my brain…Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne…The thrill of the thought that you might give a thought to my plea, cast a SPELL over me…Still I say to myself, get a hold of yourself, can’t you see…that it never can be…Though I’m certain that this heart of mine…hasn’t a GHOST of a chance in this crazy romance…You go to my HEAD…You go to my HEAD…🎢 “You Go To My Head” – Frank Sinatra 1946

    πŸŽƒ It’s Halloween, and here we are…Once more at Sleepy Hollow,
    And any Jumbler worth their weight knows it’s a place we follow.
    So many times have we been here, it’s kind of like a FLOOD,
    I guess it’s better than to see the monsters and the blood.
    They THREW it at us last in May, and many times before,
    I think that Jeff really enjoys drawing this Guy of Gore.
    The candles all a’SMOKER, the darkness filled with fright…
    Our Horsemen rides all through the town on this his special night.
    FIASCO doesn’t worry him, he’s fearless and he’s sly…
    He holds the reins, he holds his Head, as we see him go by.
    And Sleepy Hollow sits and waits, for this guy with the quirk…
    While he relaxes before he has to HEAD OFF TO WORK! πŸŽƒ

    Happy Halloween, Everyone! The day and night of the eerie, the scary and the surreal…And I’ll tell you what seems a little surreal to me. While all our words have RIDDEN through here before, the one that’s got my HEAD spinning, is FISACO. While there was no problem with the SPELLing, I found it surprising that not only has it been used 5 times before, it dates back to August 7, 2014…more than 4 years ago…Talk about a CLASSIC, right? Anyway, enough of this BRIDLE chatter, let’s HEAD over to our cartoon…

    Today, once again, we’re visiting Sleepy Hollow, and we find ourselves at the home of the HEADLESS HORSEMAN, and his wife, KIM MEABREAK. (If you remember, she kept her maiden name, which as mentioned before, is very reFRIESAN, considering the time period). Would you believe that between March 2017, and May 2018, this is the 7th time the Jumble’s brought us here? Believe it, I wouldn’t STEER you wrong…And I don’t want to get HEADS spinning by WRITHING all the dates out, but if you’re curious, just let me know and I’ll list them for you. Today we see HH, sitting back, with his feet up on a Maroon-colored footstool, which matches his HEAD REST, a pillow. He’s relaxing with a cup of mead. I say mead, since there’s no smoke emanating from it, so it can’t be hot, plus it was a popular drink of the time. It’s Halloween night, and we see him taking some time to get his HEAD straight as he tells Kim that he’s MANEly looking forward to hearing screams, and she replies that it’s a good idea inSTEED. So, in answer to our question…HH is getting ready to…HEAD OFF TO WORK! Well what do you know…David has SPOOKen! Good one, David, you’ve given us another TREAT!

    Ok, eye candy…The smiling yet maniacal-looking Pumpkin Head is always a nice touch. I guess it STEMs from Jeff’s love of the deTALEs.
    HH is looking stylish, in his period double-breasted, thigh-length Blue Waistcoat, Black Riding Pants with White Piping, and matching Beige Socks and Turtleneck. His Brown Boots, (adorned with a Gold Buckle)’ that he CARRIED on so badly about in our Puzzle of May 5th, stand besides his chair. He’s HOLDING his cup, which is engraved with a crest, in his left HAND, and if you look real closely, you’ll see the tiniest crack along the rim. But I stopped in my TRACKS here, because I just can’t help but wonder…How does he drink? What does he do…Turn and CRANE his neck to get it to his lips? Boy, that’s a SIGHT I’d like to SEE! Kim, affectionally TREATing him to a caress at the side of his head, is gazing with a look that says she only has PIES for him… She’s dressed in a traditional COSTUME of the time, (including a bonnet), which is in beautiful shades of Teal, with a Brown Bib-fronted Apron. And she holds a small Black KETTLE..CORNy looking…But nothing yet seems to be a RUNAWAY hit today. I’m in a real RIND, because I just can’t seem to get aHEAD of this! There’s the Gray Cobblestoned pathway leading out of the door. The overhead brace, attached to the wooden beam, and the opened entryway leading into the darkness, lends me to believe that they’re sitting in a Rustic Mud Room, which was standard with housing back then…Another nice deTALE. But wait…Oh GOURD, I think I’ve got it! The TurtleNECK shirt! How OVER the TOP is that? The irony! Good one, Jeff…a little more of your whimsical TRICKery! So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone…And I’ll LEAF you with a final thought…Do you think HH was a Gigolo? You know staying out all night, RUNNING around, LEAFing Kim to SHOULDER all the household responsibilities…and always singing…🎢 I ain’t got NO BODY…🎢 πŸ˜‰ “Just a Gigolo-I Ain’t Got Nobody” – Louie Prima 1956 πŸŽƒπŸ™‹πŸ»

  2. Good morning. Thanks Mike for the hidden treasures. Always enjoy what we miss by not seeing the drawing on a computer. Angela thanks for the hearty laugh. Loved your song choice. Your puns at the end brought a well deserved smile. I had little trouble with the words but would definitely pick Fiasco as the hardest one to get. Maybe five minutes at least before it popped into my head. The cartoon answer was easy as well and very cute. I’d give it a πŸ€™up. Until tomorrow stay well. Happy Halloween to all.

  3. The fraternity SMOKER was a FIASCO when a FLOOD of obscenities THREW the prospective pledges into shock.
    Thanks Milke for pointing out details which I missed.
    Angela–always ready for “old blue eyes, thanks for the tune.
    Your poem and post were read with grateful thanks–for historical background and color.

    • Hey Earl. Your sentence brought back memories of my Father and His friends who used to go to Smokers. I haven’t heard the word used as such in years…I remember thinking how the sound of it was so exciting to me as a child…I had some trouble trying to make a connection with Smoker and the puzzles’ theme, so I really pushed the envelope today. One does what one must do! πŸ˜‚ And yes, Old Blue Eyes speaks for himself. Thanks for the Shout Outs, and I hope your walk went well…Have a great afternoon, Earl…πŸŽƒπŸ™‹πŸ»

  4. All of the words came quickly to me,even fiasco.I also saw head as the first word ,but thought it was head ‘out’ to work,rather than ‘off’ to work,but lacking the necessary u for ‘out’ off came to me for the final solution.

  5. Hi all – Not a scary puzzle at all today. SMOKER took a quick extra look. FIASCO would have been the hardest if I hadn’t just recognized it from seeing it before (like CASINO). Thought the answer would be HEAD FOR THE HILLS, but the format corrected that.

    I thought the mug’s shield would have a Jumble β€˜J’ on it, and Angela, I also would just like to see the next moment, when he takes a drink from it. How does that work, into the pumpkin mouth or straight down the gullet?
    Nice Sinatra, but I particularly enjoyed the Primo Prima reference.

    Happy Halloween, everyone!

    • Trust me, I spent the greater part of 3 hours singing 🎢I Ain’t Got NO BODY🎢 in my head…πŸ˜‚ Thanks for the Shout Out. And the drinking? One does have to wonder, right?πŸ˜‰ You know you’re right, a Jumble J would have been a cute TREAT on the mug…Who knows. Maybe Jeff just didn’t want to stick his NECK OUT this time! πŸ˜‚ Have a good one, G. πŸŽƒπŸ™‹πŸ»

  6. Fiasco was a fiasco for me this morning. Finally after setting the paper down and coming back to it I was able to figure it out. As I remember it tripped me up before. Having just returned from New York and a trip to Sunnyside, Washington Irving’s home I thoroughly enjoyed the cartoon. I bought my children copies of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” there. It’s such a great story. Happy Halloween to all and may you all receive treats and no tricks.
