Happy Tuesday, everyone! All of the clue words were instantly visible upon first glance making it the first time in over a week that I was able to see them all without the slightest hesitation. FURRY is a new clue word making its debut into gameplay this morning while the other three were recycled favorites. HAMPER would be my guess as to the most difficult anagram of the day. It was also the oldest clue word of the group having last been used on 6/2/14.
Today’s cartoon brings us back to school where we see three students getting a math lesson. At the front of the room is a math teacher and she is explaining how to solve a very basic algebraic equation. She’s utilizing a projector to transfer the image onto a screen where she begins to explain how to solve this jumble of numbers with a single variable. All of the students are paying close attention and don’t seem intimidated by this new concept.
The were some interesting details in today’s panel that caught my attention. The first thing that I noticed was that the student on the far right is seated in a chair rather than at a desk. She is seated facing the young boy so perhaps she’s sharing his desktop? The other young girl on the far left has her pencil in hand, but there’s no paper on her desk. Maybe she already knows how to solve the equation and is just pretending to pay attention? My favorite detail was the small lines coming out of the front of the projector. They were very faint but it did add a sense of realism to the piece.
The letter layout for the final solution was 12-letters in length. The NU together in the layout brought NUMBERS to mind as the visual clue was a math lesson. By crossing out the letters, BY and THE were both instantly visible for the finish. This sure was a fun puzzle and I hope you were able to figure out the equation on the board! I found it amusing, that WOBBLE and STUNG were used this past February, on TWO consecutive days, the 14th and 15, respectfully…And all of our words today? As easy as 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣!…Oh, and 4️⃣! This TWOsday, once again, we find ourselves back in a Classroom, learning NEW MATH. We last were here on August 30th, when we learned “NEXT TO NOTHING”, the story of ONE and ZERO. But our ANSWER today needn’t be taught…The hints: MATH, Methodical…The dialogue. The little boy saying…”She’s Thorough”…The teacher..”Step 1️⃣ Step 2️⃣”.The SOLUTION? BY THE NUMBERS! Good one, David…We can always COUNT on you!
Eye candy..Projector, illuminating EQUATIONS on a Blue Board…Teacher and 3 young children, at Brown tables and chairs…Little girl at left, with the little Mauve Bow…ODDly, she’s the only one who seems to be taking notes. She’s holding a pencil, but she’s MINUS any paper…Boy wearing a Solid Red #17 Sports Jersey. I wonder who he COUNTS as his favorite player? But the blonde girl at right? Sitting sideways? Where’s her little table? That just doesn’t ADD UP! So, There you have it, Folks! Done! Good morning. Where is there a happy medium. We have had a few days where jumble was (at least in my eyes) extremely hard to days when they were a walk in the park. It is so hard to find the middle ground. Take today for instance. I breezed right through the words and the cartoon answer. Another cute finish on the cartoon answer. Mike and Angela,you guys find so much in the drawing that most of us miss that you two would make great detectives. Between that and song choice,plus poem and puns,you guys got an A+ for the course. Until tomorrow stay well.

While trying to solve HAMPER, I came up with AMPERE. Has that word ever been used in a Jumble or would it be too obscure?

When I opened the HAMPER I was STUNG by a FURRY critter and felt a slight WOBBLE when walking down the hallway.
I also found the scrambled words not difficult. Using the double letter together tactic certainly works today. The solution was also readily apparent and not sequestered behind a pun orr two.
I haven’t heard that Guy Mitchell song in ages Angela. Thanks for quoting an oldie again.
I like the way you used numbers to pun-very clever and digitally appropriate And thanks Mike and Angela for the historical background on the scrambled words. I always like to know which word is new—and I depend on you two for that.
Two points that slightly bothered me:
One: Are the directions she gives about the equation on the board really “New Math”? I know next to nothing about that and yet using my old lessons in algebra I was able to solve for X. Wasn’t the rule back then that whatever you do to one side you do to the other in an equation? She said take away 3–from each side and go on from there and you can solve for X Which I was able to do.
Two: A projector to illustrate a math problem? Sorry, that just does not seem OK with me. How long would it take to write out that equation on a white board, or in this case, thanks Angela, a blue board? Projectors are fine for maps, graphs, cartoons, art work, et. al. but in this case I’m not sure it added anything to the concept of the cartoon or solution. Am I nitpicking/? I’ve been know to do that. So mea culpa.

Smart boards, yes, but I think they are computer driven and I do not see one in the cartoon. Yes, I agree it’s a whole different world out there and the removal and chalk and dust and erasers doesn’t bother me in the least.

The projector is used for the smart board and all of the elementary and middle schools around here have them. I see them when I go to parent/teacher conferences but I’ve always seen them mounted to the ceiling and not on a table like we saw today. Not exactly sure how they work but the kids seem to like them.

The furry critter with a stinger was a figment of my imagination–part tarantula part scorpion? Let’s hope those two don’t cross-bred and give us a new menace.😖😮👎
Being a former math prof,the solution was obvious,as were the words with hamper giving me a slight reason to pause.I’m still relatively in shock,given the Astros sweep of my beloved Indians.Reminded me of the NY Giants sweep of the 111 win Indians in the ’54 WS.

Hi all – Yes, this was like a Monday instant solve.
Just to keep Earl company and to encourage nitpicking, I will also. (Hey, I’ve got nothing better to do right now).
I also thought the projector was odd, but for a different reason; since she’s not holding any kind of controller, it’s too old-fashioned. Haven’t seen one since an Al Davis press conference. I figured she’d be using powerpoint. And I’m glad to see at least one kid is using an actual pencil, although do they still have sharpeners in classrooms?
The other problem is the solution. Besides the fact that I would have swapped the ‘X’ and the 3 to opposite sides of the equal sign, she says that step one is to subtract 3 from both sides, but in fact she has subtracted “X” from both sides.
