CARTOON ANSWER:

THE COMPANY MANUFACTURED CLOWN SHOES, WHICH WAS – – –

FALOETSNMLE = NO SMALL “FEET”

Happy Monday, everyone!  Mr. Hoyt decided to change things up this morning by giving us a puzzle that had the feel of a mid to late week challenge.  All of our clue words were recycled favorites, but the anagrams were new.  SHRUNK was the only one that immediately jumped out at me leaving three impressive anagrams to work through.  MORALE ended up taking the longest to decipher making it my choice for the most difficult anagram of the day.

At first glance, the setting for today’s panel appeared to be the backstage area of a circus.  It wasn’t until after reading the cartoon sentence that we learn what we’re actually seeing is the inner workings of a clown shoe manufacturer.

Their “office” is in the shape of a round tent as indicated by the subtle creases in the tent material in the rear of the drawing.  We see one clown diligently replacing the sole of an oversized shoe while a customer tries on his freshly mended pair.  He exclaims that they fit perfectly and gives a thumbs up gesture to indicate his delight.

Although the silliness of the clown costumes was more than enough detail to make the cartoon visually appealing, Jeff added a few more to really make it pop.  If you look closely at the clown that is mending the shoe, you can see that he’s working with a pair of needle-nose pliers.  In the pliers is a curved needle that he’s using to sew the upper part of the shoe to the sole.  My favorite detail of the piece was the clown in the back that is leisurely strolling along.  In his hands are four oversized boxes which most likely contain freshly made pairs.

The letter layout for the final solution contained 11-letters.  Noticing that the anagram started with an F brought FEET immediately to mind.  The two L’s led me to find SMALL leaving NO for the finish.  The combination of challenging clue words and a zany cartoon made this puzzle a wonderful way to start the week.  Have a marvelous Monday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!  🤡

  1. 🎶 Oh yeah yeah yeah…Now if there’s a smile on my face, it’s only there trying to fool the public, But when it comes down to fooling you, now Honey that’s quite a different subject….Now they’re some sad things known to man…But ain’t too much sadder than…The tears of a CLOWN when there’s no one around, uh…🎶 ” Tears of a Clown” – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles 1967

👞 They FLAIL around in giant shoes, with tiny hats that SHRUNK,
Some carry with them props such as the small ubiquitous trunk…
And even though their intent is to make a child laugh,
So many times it ends up being parents’ largest gaffe…
For some reason all through the years Clowns MORALE has held sway,
Despite general consensus that there’s fear to put allay…
Why one would ever COVET a profession such as this?
It’s always made me wonder…and feel something was amiss…
I’m one of many others that do definitely retreat,
When clowns appear, I’m out of there…
No Clowns and….NO SMALL “FEET”! 👞

Add me in with the group that, One: had an easy go of these Sweet Repeats, and Two: has an aversion to CLOWNS. I mean I’m not looking to TRAMPle on anyone else’s FEET, but Jumble Guys? Really great puzzle…Only the theme? Couldn’t be FARCEUR from the truth! They JEST..ER scare me…Plain and DIMPLE! …But the idea of creating this puzzle about CLOWN SHOES? …Definitely NO SMALL “FEET”! Kudos, David! You gave me a LAUGH!

We seem to be behind the SCENES of a CIRCUS…The conversation seems pretty IN..TENTS. The BOZO in the back…No, that’s not SOLE food he’s carrying… But close…They’re SHOE boxes! He definitely looks like he NOSE what’s he’s doing. The CLOWN farthest left? With the Green hair and the tiny bowler hat? SPOT ON! The sole female CLOWN, Pretty in Pink? ORANGE you glad your hair doesn’t look like hers? And I bet she’s not looking for a BOW amongst this group either! And our guy at right, in the size 24’s? The one dressed in Blue and Yellow, with the JESTER’s cap? He seems a little familiar…Do we know him? EM..MET KELLY? But the one who’s really got me in STITCHES? The COBBLER! The MOE haircut BOWLed me over…The tongue protrusion STICKLED me…The Needle NOSE pliers working on those laces..PULLED me right in…And that ubiquitous squirting DAISY…WATER we gonna say? A classic…And the eye candy? Has to be those SHOES! Yellow and Black, Brown and Red? You know I’m a sucker for those Two-Toned Shoes! So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Oh, and before I end…I forgot to mention. All the CLOWNS are wearing GLOVES…I guess GLOVE will find a way in the end…Whether you’re scared of CLOWNS or not! Have a great day, Everyone!…And LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH! 👞🙋🏻

    • Angela:
Just yesterday I was listening to the Beatles Channel on Sirius, and Smokey Robinson was the guest d.j. He said that George Harrison had written a song about him, “Pure Smokey”, and he played it. I had never heard of this song!🙄

      • Hi Mike. Good Morning. This is what Earl’s dubbed the Serendipity moments…And they’re always a sweet surprise, aren’t they? And how cool is that? I love Smokey…always have…I’ve never heard of the song either……We learn something every day, right? I’m going to look for it. And I didn’t forget you last night..I still haven’t gotten to read the whole article yet..Really busy day y’day. And I’m already out running around this morning…But I’m determined to get to it some time today…I’ll let you know my verdict! 😉 Hope you’re having a good day so far…🙋🏻

      • Hey Mike M — Excuse me butting in here, but Paul could have made you “Father McCormick” in Eleanor Rigby!
I just want to add my thanks for pointing out the GQ McCartney video. It had been in my “Recommended For You” list on YouTube for awhile, but I just hadn’t gotten around to it until you mentioned it. Great stuff!

This is just a quick 2 minute clip of Paul talking about how his guitar playing was overlooked because everyone thought he was “just” a bass player!

        https://tinyurl.com/Paulguitarvsbass

        • 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And, Father McCormick..😂 .LOL..Another 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! 🙋🏻

        • @Steve—I went back and listened again to the Eleanor Rigby part of that video. And you’re right, he says he started at McCartney in the phone book and went down to McKenzie. What, there were no McCormicks living in London or Liverpool, or wherever this was!?😏 I like how Paul talks about finding out years later that there really was an Eleanor Rigby buried in the cemetery of the Woolton church where he and John met, and then he starts making “Twilight Zone” type sounds.

          • Father McCormick (😂) – I loved that part, and wasn’t it creepy? The other thing I noted to Angela – From a scruffy leather-clad Liverpool Teddy Boy to $2,000 sweaters and $5,000 suits in GQ – some “working class hero”, eh? 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

            • But G He’s “Sir” Paul now! We can’t expect him to shop at “The Men’s Warehouse”😉 ..no matter “how glad he would be that he did”!!! 😂 👔👖🙋🏻

          • But Mike and Steve… How cute is he with the little finger in the air simulating going down the list? Priceless? And the face he made while doing those Twilight Zone sounds? Double Priceless! 😉🙋🏻

          • Hi Mike…Ok. Finally. Locked myself away and finished it all…
Without settling for the Evelyn Wood version! 😉
If I could have been a fly on the wall! I really hope they’ll be more of these…It’s a gold mine!
            Again, thank you so much.🙋🏻

          • Mike…You’ve probably seen this some time during the day today, but if not, prepared to be blown away. Talk about “singing”? This kid is truly blessed. It’s been on my local ABC affiliate all day, and just now on World News Tonight with David Muir, they ran it with a spot where before the ending, she spoke and said that she had to get it right because it’s such a really special song for America! It’s totally mind boggling. I hope it plays correctly…🇺🇸🙋🏻

  2. Mike..Notice the difference in the printing of the four words today? So bold and dark? At first I thought it might just be my NY paper, but it’s like that on-line, and also in the two out of state papers that I subscribe to. I think it may take some getting used to! 🤔🙋🏻

    • On 3/19/18 I noticed and mentioned the new style. It went away for a few months but looks to be back. I quite like it as the clue words are much easier to read. Could this just be some funny business??? 🤡👋🏻

      • 👏🏻👏🏻 It may very well be some kind of funny business! Right now, I can’t say that I like it though…Kind of overwhelming..like it’s going for the JUGGLER! But, that’s just me..😉🙋🏻

      • Mike.. You had me wondering….Do you keep the panels? If so, take a look. I went back to check mine. 03/19 was the day when the new clue font began, the cartoon answer. I remember because I mentioned that I liked it, and that it might be Comic San MS, and Jeff had me for lunch! He hates that font! 🙄 And told me so, in no uncertain terms! He even brought up the Indiana Water Tower that’s such an eyesore to the Hoosier population! (I’ve seen it, but…then again, I’m not a Hoosier)! 😂 But this font on the clue words? I’m pretty sure it’s a first..🤔🙋🏻

      • For some reason your post did not appear when I signed on and I missed it until now. Great details and descriptions. Interested to see if the new bold lettering will stay or fade away.

  3. Angela, I noticed that the clue words were in bold letters in my paper too. I can’t say I like the change because I think it detracts some from the great cartoon.
More of a challenge than most Mondays. I got the answer by looking for words with two Ls together. This led me to small, which I tried with a few two letter words, including no.

    • Hi Caroline. Good Morning. They hit me like a ton of bricks…so darkened..And I agree with you. It’s very striking…But I’m terrible when it comes to change. I go down fighting tooth and nail, kicking and screaming…I’m too much a creature of habit..which isn’t the best way to go thru life! 😉 And I’m trying to adapt better! 😉 The answer! I just saw the BIG FEET? And I knew it was a SHOE 👞 IN! 😉 But very good move on the double L’s…You know? I’m wondering…Maybe the block lettering is a misprint…We’ll just have to wait and see…Have a good one, Caroline! 👞🙋🏻

  4. Good morning. David gave you a laugh Angela and you gave me one with the perfect song choice. First off, kudos on the cartoon answer. This was cute. It did justice. Nice work on the words, poem and puns as well Angela. Today’s jumble was a little harder for a Monday. At least for me. I noticed the bold and bigger letters and liked it but,I’m wondering if it distracted my thought process. Just throwing that out there. I got the words and cartoon answer but it took me longer than I thought it should. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Hey Brookkyn…I may have to leave abruptly in the middle of this..I’ll try to type fast…Or talk less..😂?.HA! If you’re a gambling man..(which I know you are)..I’m sure you know where to put your money on that one! 😂😂 And I’m not CLOWNING around, either! 😉
You’re echoing Caroline’s sentiments exactly about the words..it does seem distracting…But I’m sure if it’s here to stay? We’ll adjust, right?….Anyway, so what if it took you a bit longer this morning..What counts is that you stuck it out. And I agree, it’s a very cute one today! Thanks a CARLOAD for the Shout Outs..you’re too Sweet😘. And I had a feeling that you’d enjoy the song choice today…I should have bet money on it! 😉 Oh, I gotta tell you this real quick…They kept saying on the news that alternate side parking was suspended today, and I couldn’t imagine why. Then my cousin texted me about the Jumble, and told me that it’s a Jewish holiday. Everybody in Brooklyn gets so thrilled with alternate side suspension, right? I mean you can have a driveway, but there’s always more than one car in the family. My cousin has five! So he’s happy as a …CLOWN today! Have a good one, Brooklyn..Glad I was able to give you a laugh! ..👞🙋🏻

      • It’s a holiday today and tomorrow. I knew because I tried to get a doctor appointment with the dermatologist. On my block it’s alternate side on Thur and Fri only, which is bad enough. You know you’re getting old when you move your car from a legal spot to the wrong side and come out later on and see a ticket on the windshield. Talk about feeling stupid.

        • Hey Paul. Yes, it looks like a 2-day reprieve this week. Too bad you won’t benefit from it, though…I think I had Wednesday-Friday when I lived there last. Every block has 2 days, right? It’s really a hassle, I know. I remember one of my cousins that had to be at work early in the city, had to get up more than an hour earlier on her days, because she had to sit and wait for a spot to open up…Poor kid fell asleep behind the wheel a few times…It’s all so ridiculous..Especially as I mentioned last week or so ago, that all the trucks do is blow the dirt from one side on the first day, and then back again on the second! Only in NY! We don’t have it out here on Staten Island…Small favors! I guess they throw us a bone, since we get screwed so many other ways! 😂🙄 And you’re not getting old, and by no means stupid! Far from it…It happens to my friends all the time, and they’re breaking 50…It’s just a pain, and none of us likes to think about things like that. Sorry to hear about the tickets though. That’s no LAUGHING matter! 🅿️🚗🙋🏻

  5. The football teams MORALE SHRUNK when the owner lost his cool and began to FLAIL his arms and was known to COVET another teams star player.
The website I use had those BOLD letters this AM and that was a surprise. No difficulty with the words, although FLAIL slowed me down–my choice for the most difficult. Liked the solution and the cartoon and dialogue gave great hints.
Angela–I also love Smokey R. And will research this tune later.
Your poem flowed flawlessly and was brilliant
I don’ share your aversion to clowns and have a distant cousin who has been one for 50 years. His wife tolerates his attire and make-up but rolls her eyes a lot!
Back to my Monday tasks. Have a memorable Monday everyone. 👋 😊🌞

    • Hey Earl. Good Morning! Very timely sentence today! One already detects some “unrest” within the football community! 😉 Great work! 👏🏻 FLAIL? No KIDDING! 😉 You’re right on the money! I’ve been hearing it all morning…(“Who uses that word”? And I quote)…As for the answer…You’re right again, the cartoon and dialogue were giveaways. I’m so sorry if I’ve STEPPED on your TOES with my CLOWN comments. That’s me..Always putting my BIG FOOT in my big mouth! I hope I didn’t offend you ..or your cousin…and you’ve got me laughing about his wife! Poor woman! 🙄 Thanks very much for all the Shout Outs…Despite my dislike for the theme, I thoroughly enjoyed the puzzle…And when you check out the song? You’re going to recognize it immediately..I bet money on it! 😉 Have a good one Earl…I assume you’re at the Hospital, so do the good you always do…Talk to you later! 👞🙋🏻

        • Hey Earl. I’m glad. I didn’t mean any offense, and I’d especially not want to do so to you. And I’m not totally off the deep end with them, I just rather not be in a roomful! No childhood trauma or anything…they just give me the creeps. And I’ve been to too many kids parties, where one starts crying..and they all follow suit! It’s a thin line…If you have time look up Clown and Staten Island…A lot of sick puppies out there! I’m always SMH! Have a good one, Earl…🙋🏻

    • Lol. You know the term. “Stop clowning around”” You poor cousins wife has been saying that to him for 50 years. When will he ever stop!’ lol

  6. The new font threw me off on all the words. With flail coming first, followed by covet, then shrunk, and morale last. No in the solution came to me most quickly, followed by small, and feet last. In any case a rough Mon morning for me, but then it is a Monday.

  7. Fun puzzle for a Monday morning. I figured feet first and the rest fell into place. I totally LOVE the new bold letters. I can see them much more easily than the old style. I may be in the minority but I hope it is a permanent change. Looks like a sunny and warm day here so hope all of you have a bright and cheery Monday.

      • Mike, you told Chuck you found it refreshing. Would it be as refreshing as a nice cold bottle of beer? Again,I liked it. It’s different, bold and easier to see on the eyes. We’ll see if it does distract from the thought process if it’s back tomorrow

        • I wouldn’t go that far, Paul! It didn’t interrupt or distract me in any way so I’m happy with the minor change. Mr. Hoyt posted a short time and gave an explanation as to why and also said that it will be permanent. See you in the morning!

    • Hi Betty. Good Morning. I read something either on Twitter or Facebook that mentioned just what you’re saying. That people felt the words would be easier to see/read with a bold face…Happy Monday! 🙋🏻

  8. Hi all – I like the boldface words, if only because of my fading vision. As long as the increased ink usage isn’t subject to a Canadian tariff, I think we’re good. 😂

Wow, this was a Monday puzzle? This was one of the hardest for me. I had to start with the answer and work backwards to get FLAIL and MORALE. Interesting that usually the quotes indicate that the word FEET is to be spelled “FEAT”, but with this subject, it’s the exact opposite.

    Have a great day, everyone!

🎵”Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my surface hid
Smiling in the crowd I try, But in my lonely room I cry
    The tears of a clown
    When there’s no one around”🎵
Angela, I remember my friends and me being particularly impressed by the songwriting in these lyrics.
Nice Emmett Kelly reference, but none of the clowns has a sad face; the cobbler just looks intent. And speaking of which, I was also going to warn everyone, “DON’T SMELL HIS FLOWER!!” 😂

    • LOL..The ink! One news story after another about buying what you want now…before..<%€£*! 😂 Of course, the whole song is beautiful, but I can only put up so much! 😉 As it is, it's long! And Emmett Kelly! 😂😂 G…You know I went for the pun with the CLOWN on the right! Work with me here! It's called poetic license! .😉 And I can understand about your vision..You know my Mom's history…Have a good one, G. Talk to you later 🙋🏻

    • G…Smell the flower? Did you not see my “ubiquitous squirting DAISY” comment? Ma SHOES! 😂😂🙋🏻

        • 😂Ah, the old inflection..or is it punctuation?! 😉 Want to LAUGH, G? It wasn’t really my question..It was Lou’s! You know he takes an interest in your “stuff”! 😉 He texted me…I wasn’t even sure what he was talking about.🎶 I Think We’re Alone Now…🎶 😂😂 And you wonder why I’m half shot? 😂😂 it’s good to LAUGH! 😘🙋🏻

  9. Did the puzzle online this morning. Better go grab the paper to see what all the hub bub is about! I seem to remember a previous font change a few months back.

Morale was the trickiest clue word, today, for me.

    • Hi David…Done and done! A noble gesture! Thanks for the explanation…And the thrill is mutual! Take care. 🙋🏻
