Good morning everyone, and happy Tuesday! I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable long holiday weekend. The lineup this morning gives us a new clue word with SLICED making its debut. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you probably already know that I’m not the biggest fan of past tense words being used as anagrams. Even though it was visible upon first glance, I couldn’t help but try and find alternate word choices that would have got the job done.  I quickly got over my hang-up and pressed on with the puzzle our creators thoughtfully crafted. It was a toss-up between LOUNGE and CAGEY as the most difficult anagram of the day, so I’ll take a pass and let everyone chime in with their choice in the comments section.

Two weeks ago today was the first time that I’d ever heard of frisbee golf when it was featured as the theme for the Jumble cartoon. I immediately recognized the course this morning and knew exactly what sport was being played. We see a man tossing his disc at the basket as a female player waits for her turn. The cartoon sentence tells us that the course is closing down and that these characters are actually a team. I didn’t catch the fact that they were both wearing similarly colored clothing at first because my newspaper prints the puzzle in black and white.

I really enjoyed the perspective in which Jeff framed this particular cartoon. He chose to show us a close-up of the basket while keeping the couple in the distance. As the man tosses his disc, we get a sense of distance between him and the basket. It also served another purpose which was to show us the number 18. Since frisbee golf is played with similar rules to traditional golf, 18 indicates the end or finish of a round. This clue became apparent upon finishing the surprise answer.

There were a couple of extra details in todays panel that caught my attention. Behind our couple you can see another person tossing a disc. Zooming in on the panel, the gender of the person is male and he has excellent form as he makes his play. My favorite detail of the panel had to be the action line of our players toss. You can see several half circles along the line which show the path that his toss took. It’s such a subtle detail that was easily overlooked, but it sure added a sense of action to the piece.

The letter layout for the final solution was extremely cryptic. If the visual clues in the puzzle didn’t offer any insight as to where to begin, you were most likely in for a very difficult solve. The anagram started with an F, and the extra care in which Jeff had drawn the frisbee trajectory brought FLING immediately to mind. ONE and LAST were both visible within the remaining letters for a quick finish. Even though I started the puzzle off with a sour start on SLICED, I trusted in the creative process that both Jeff and David have mastered through countless puzzles for a satisfying ending.   1. Good morning. I see no one has chimed in yet. Thank you for that interesting post Mike. As soon as I saw the cartoon it brought back us talking about this and more just last week or so. I had no trouble with the words with just a slight hitch on Lounge. That would be my choice for hardest word. The cartoon answer was an instant blind solve. I put down the letters and after checking,found out my first thought was correct. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Kudos on being first, Paul, and many thanks for the kind words. I had an inkling that LOUNGE would be the top choice but CAGEY was also jumbled very well. You beat me on the blind solve of the cartoon which I had to take my time with. It’s funny how David started the anagram with an F and it’s the first letter I started trying to make words with. Luckily it all worked out for a very enjoyable punny answer. Stay cool on this hot and humid Tuesday! 🙂

      • Hi Angie,went back to yesterday and saw your post to me.An interesting song but that’s not it. As far as I remember it was called The Gutter Bum Song. Those were some of the words to it that I left. I’ll have to check further with my brother or sister if they remember it. I remember a lot more of the lyrics

My friends are all older than me, and two of them somehow remembered this one as one their parents or Grandparents had listened to….This one is funny! Ok..I’ll dig a little deeper..and you check with your siblings. I’m curious now..Be careful with this heat, Brooklyn..it’s brutal out there…Have a good one! 🔥🙋🏻

  2. The sous chef felt FAINT when she SLICED her finger but was reluctant to allow a CAGEY stranger to escort her to the LOUNGE to recover.
    Yes Mike, I also dislike past tense words so SLICED slowed me down. Having played Fisbee golf the solution was easy once I wrote down FLING. Clever cartoon and play on that phrase.

    🔴 I’m not sure what we have here, a FAINT doubt crosses my mind,
    The dialogue seems CAGEY…I’m not sure what we may find…
    Is this a Couple playing around or two who enjoyed sport?
    Are we to think the Frisbee Golf’s not all they did purport?
    We see the Course is closing, the place where these two met…
    And if we diced and SLICED it, are they now faced with regret?
    The woman has a husband, not proof thing’s are amiss…
    But why do I feel somehow her life wasn’t one of bliss?
    Did her husband always LOUNGE around and never join her in,
    A bit of fun and Frisbee, so instead she turned to him?
    It could just be the phrasing here…a little deceiving?
    There’s two ways we could go with this…but really…ONE LAST FLING? 🔴

    With the words an easy solve, and the phrase an old familiar one, the answer just FLEW off the page! And look closely…That lovelorn look on MRS. JONES’ face? COUPLEd with the dialogue and the answer? It just automatically led me to believe that there may be more IN PLAY here than meets the eye…Just Sayin’!..And those Moonstruck eyes are the eye candy today! Have a great day, Everyone!   4. Put me down for lounge with cagey a close second. We’ve seen lounge before but it seems to give me pause every time it appears. Had no problem at all with the cartoon answer. I had never heard of Frisbee Golf until two weeks ago, so doing the Jumble is a continued learning experience. Have a good Tuesday everyone.

    • Good afternoon, Betty. We haven’t had a 5-letter anagram take first place for as long as I can remember so I floated it out there as a possibility.

      I also experienced a similar reaction when noticing that the sport was disc golf. They teach us something new every day. 😊

  6. Hi all – The first thing I saw was the answer. I only saw CAGEY quickly by putting the Y at the end. LOUNGE looked like it was going to take a long time, but appeared on the second look for some unknown reason. For the third word I saw SLICE and DICE, and only then realized that SLICED was possible.

    Mike, I’m glad you supplied an innocent option that the couple is on the same Frisbee golf team. Your puzzle is in black and white; mine as usual has the wrong colors, so it wasn’t obvious. I can lower my eyebrow now.

    Angela, I had to laugh at your song and writeup, because I had the same feeling – that somehow this was a “Same Time, Next Year” kind of situation.

    • LOL..And so did “D” above…After you signed off last night, I hung out until the puzzle went up, and did the post at 4 o’clock…then went to sleep. I had 2 appts this morning, but I did an edit, and still couldn’t shake my first instinct..but I STILL hesitated…😂 So as I told him/ her above, I left it open to interpretation..BUT!!! 😂😂 ..And my second song choice was..🎶I Don’t Want To Be Right” – Luther Ingram..1972…”Same Time”? Next week??? 😉🙋🏻

    • Hi, Steve! Maybe Jeff should of had her say “ex-husband” in the dialogue to clear up the matter more definitively. The Jumble is family oriented so I highly doubt that the creators would delve into the murky waters of unfaithfulness.

  7. Cagey and lounge were a slight delay, but having my real newspaper at hand lent itself to a quick solution. As a golfer, just having played 9 holes this morning, frisbee golf is not GOLF.

    • I hope you had a great weekend with your granddaughters, Chuck! And I agree that it sure was nice having a physical copy of the puzzle to work with this morning.

      The game is also called “Frolf” in what I can only assume is a portmanteau which blends the words just enough so golf isn’t as prominent.

  8. It was lounge again and also sliced that gave me trouble. The answer came quickly, helping me to back into both. Kids play frisbee golf at a park near where I live.

Now I like Jim Hill he’s a good friend of mine that is why I am walking down Main Street and Vine Hallelujah I’m a bum hallelujah bum again hallelujah give us a hand out to remind us again. That’s about all I remember. When we got the record it was scratched. I remember getting that and the Gene Autry one. I thing that song I told you about was on the Flip side of Round her neck she wears a yellow ribbon. Meaning your wiki your wacky your Wow wow wonderful. Gee, I must have still been in my diapers then. Lol.

      • That’s great Angela. Thanks. I remember the voice different and parts of the words especially the part about the baker being dead. Same scratchy music. Some things you hear and for unknown reasons you remember a lot of the words. I guess the odd ball songs just stuck with me.Remember when Johnny Carson would give out free prizes if you could stump the band. Always wished I was in the audience and see if they knew that one or Gene Autrys odd song. You did good Grass Hopper.

        • LOL..You’re very welcome, Master Po! 😂👍🏻! As for his voice, if you care to, under where the record shows, there’s comments. I’m always reading comments..I like seeing other people’s prospectives about things… If you hit on the little arrow, you’ll see how many people remembered it from childhood, and how some people say that the voice sounded somewhat different. Could be 2 reasons…Either the person’s voice matured, or you may have heard it sung by someone else. As for the difference in the words? Did you go down the list of the lyrics? At top it showed how many different people recorded it. The lyrics vary somewhat with each rendition..I think there’s 3 or 4,…Stuck with you? Paul, you have an amazing memory! I have trouble remembering why I opened the refrigerator! For you to remember a song like this, from such a young age is really exceptional…And especially to recall the lyrics like that? Freaky! 😂 Something made it leave such an impression on you…And yes, I do remember the Carson bits…You would have done great! Now we just have to work on that Autry one..You never know, right! Anyway, I’m just so glad I could help…And I’ll say it again…What did we ever do before the Internet? Kind of scary thinking about it, right? Now all you have to do is see if your brother and sister remember it. Hope you’re having a good night…(Did you play today in this heat)? ‘😘🙋🏻
