Happy Wednesday, Jumble players! The first three clue words that we encountered this morning were recycled favorites. DROOP was the exact same anagram that we saw on 4/9/18 making it a quick solve. My choice for the most difficult anagram of the day was STICKY. Even though the S and Y were in their correct spots, it still took me quite a few looks before it popped into view. BLANCH is coming up as a new word but it was easily deciphered to finish off the quartet.

We head to the production floor of a US Mint for today’s cartoon. Regular players of the Jumble will remember that we’ve seen several cartoons this year centered around the creation of new coin designs so it was interesting to see the focus of today’s panel being the actual minting process.

Two characters can be seen working the machine as the small coins roll off the conveyor belt and fall into a large cart. The cartoon sentence informs us that the coins we see being produced are pennies and I counted 63 pennies rolling off the line.

The United States Mint produces approximately 30 million pennies each day which equates to 1,040 pennies per second. Going a step further, the total pennies produced in a year is approximately 13 billion individual coins with a total value of 13 million dollars. With all of those coins being produced, it’s no wonder that Jeff added a wheel on the cart so it can be easily moved around the minting facility!

The letter layout for the final solution contained 6-letters. I was able to blind solve this one after noticing that the word “smell” appeared in both the cartoon dialogue and sentence. The answer sure was a stinky pun, but not really much of a challenge. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

      At times so lost in EXILE, with no one to share romance,
      It sometimes got quite STICKY as the others looks would BLANCH.
      So she’d sit alone and feel the DROOP…A lonely girl was she…
      As she wondered if these coins were wrong or were they “mint” to be.
      But she stayed with it and then one day the news came she was hired,
      To work the Mint, the home where coins were piled, pressed and fired.
      And we see her here, she’s never “changed” her love unprecedented…
      Her dreams’ come true, she’s found her slot…The girl’s now so Self-“CENTED”! 💰

      COUNT on the Jumble Guys to give us something so cute and quirky two days in a row, right? Easy, breezy “Summer FARE” to COIN a phrase! Today, once again, Jeff’s taken us to the U.S. Mint. Having recently visited on August 9th, and before that May 17th, we find today that the venue may be the same, but the theme has definitely CHANGEd. We see a couple, NICK L. and PENNY LANE. Having met at the MINT and fallen in love, they now work SIDE by SIDE at the PENNY SLOTS, and you can BET this was a marriage made in Heaven…just MINT to be. Two people so taken with COINS that they couldn’t see HEADS nor TAILS past their obsession. And I should ADD, that a fellow worker, DIMENICK, a retired COPPER, performed the wedding ceremony. A mutual friend heard he was NEWly ordained, asked, and DIME said, “Sure, I’m ABE’ll to do it”! And the rest is history! So, it makes perfect CENTS that we now find them surrounded by the thing they love most…PENNIES! The look, the feel, “the smell”! I do ZINC we may have found the happiest couple in the past QUARTER century! So, with our dialogue showing us NICK L. asking PENNY if she “still loves that smell”, and PENNY ecstatically answering that “It’s so RICH”…What else could our answer be but… These COINS are “CENTED”! Ha! Good one, David! CENTSsational pun!

      Ok, eye candy…There’s a few shaded COINS showing in the bin, but it really doesn’t ADD up to much…And both NICK L. and PENNY are wearing green hair nets to match their shirts, but that’s neither HAIR nor there…(Although if PENNY’S Hair was MINT to stay under that net? I’m getting the IMPRESSION that it’s the wrong size! PROOF? Look closely, and you’ll see so many wisps gone asTRAY)! So I have to go with the gaga look on PENNY’S face…She’s still star STRUCK…Gotta give it to this girl…I ZINC she’ll forever be Heaven CENT! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone…And remember…Finding that lucky PENNY in life is well worth the WHEAT! 💰🙋🏻

  3. BLANCHe DuBois saw a DROOP in her prospects when she entered a STICKY relationship with Mitch and was sent into social EXILE.
    No problems with the clue words or the solution—even though I knew a PUN was coming the length of the answer made it easier than usual.
    Thanks for all the details Mike—counting all those pennies. Yikes. Do you know the difference in the cost of producing all those pennies and their face value? I’ve heard the mint is losing money.
    Angela—of course the song was a no-brainer today. What else could you select??
    The poem was a like a sad, sad story until the end—you had me in the palm of your hand.
    All those puns–but I really appreciated the names of the characters in the cartoon—BRILLIANT.
    Usually I try not to alter a clue word in my sentence but today I could not get Blanche DuBois out of my head, so I had to go with “The Streetcar Named Desire”—so yell STELLA at me.
    Last day hopefully of heat and humidity up here–we’ll see.

    • The cost to make one penny in FY 2017 was 1.82 cents. They do lose money on penny and nickel production but make it back on dimes and quarters (3.33 & 8.24 cents per coin).

    • ROTFL! Earl, you’ve made my morning! Any die-hard movie buff immediately went to Ms DuBois upon seeing that word! And I completely understand her permeating your thoughts…I’ve had visions of Marlon Brando and that torn T-Shirt in my head for hours…and it’s very comfortable there… I may add! I’m in no rush to see him go! I absolutely love the sentence,..and poor Mitch, huh? What’re gonna do? Definitely one of my top 10 movies! My song…TBT, I thought you’d rather I used 🎶Penny Lane🎶,. I flirted with it for the briefest of seconds, (only because of you), but when I knew I was going to make PENNY the center of attraction..no brainier for sure! Sorry if you felt I depicted her as sad, it was just to set the scene…That look of ecstasy on her face while smelling PENNIES just had me in stitches….I ZINC Jeff must know something we don’t!   4. Good morning. I did the puzzle and again had to leave before it came to me. Thank goodness it was a short trip and a very short line to wait on. I’m back and eager to put my two cents in!! First off thanks Mike for that valuable information. I’m surprised you actually counted those 63 pennies. Angela,loved your comment to Mike. You got a good laugh out of me. Great song choice,you were right on the money. Even the second one you thought of was another good one. Your use of the words,poems and puns also had me laughing. Earl,another solid job. Today’s jumble really felt like it should have been saved for a Monday. It was that easy. No hesitation whatsoever on all the words and when it came time for the cartoon,once I wrote down the letters the answer was obvious. It was an instant read. Usually the quotation words in my eyes don’t make it for me. But lately they have been cute and put a smile on my face. Until tomorrow stay well. Oh Angela,I listened to that Blackbird song and was not impressed. it was the first time I ever heard it. I certainly have no desire to hear it again. Did you really like it?

You got new glasses now, so you’ve got no more excuses! And haven’t you noticed how much better you’re getting at solving them?       • The glasses will take a couple of weeks I guess. I didnt play bocce yesterday but I did play only one game today. There were six of us. The court was so dry I had to hook up the hose that the parks department has for us in a secured box. I can’t handle a dry court. The ball just flys when it’s so dry.

        • Hey, Paul…I knew you couldn’t have had your glasses yet, I was just breaking your shoes…I know what you mean about everything being so dry…my tomato and basil plants are soaking up the water as fast as I can offer it. But playing in this heat? Ugh, not for me…6 of you..how many on the average day? Any shade on the court? 🙋🏻

  6. My two cents’ worth this morning: Stuck on sticky as I kept seeing the k as an X and was trying to make sixty out of it which was not only the wrong letter but not enough letters. Once I straightened that out, I had no problem with the cartoon solution. I thought I heard years ago that they were going to stop minting pennies but they still seem to be around in abundance.     • Betty, you can correct me if I’m wrong. One of the SF hotels, I think it was the St. Francis on Union Square, used to be noted for the fact that they washed all the coins they received, probably so that those guests wouldn’t soil their expensive white gloves when receiving change back. No idea if they still do that now that they, like most of the classic hotels, have been sold several times.

      • You’re absolutely correct about the St. Francis, one of our truly venerable old institutions. I believe they also washed and ironed the paper money as well. There was a huge grandfather clock in their lobby. I’m told that during World War ll couples would make a date to “Meet Me at the Saint Francis” when the fellow returned home from over seas. It is now owned by the Westin chain and I don’t know if they still “launder their money”. I’m mourning the loss of another one of our old San Francisco institutions, Gumps which is closing soon. Every year I buy Christmas ornaments for all the children on my list there but not anymore. I was downtown last week and it made me feel so sad to see the “Going Out of Business Sale – Everything Must Go ” on the Windows. The huge gold Buddha which graced the store and was the only item not for sale has gone back to his owner. Another one of our unique and family owned stores departs. Boo Hiss!!

        • Betty, “Money laundering”, I love it! 😂😂 With Chinatown only a block or so away, maybe they just had a YEN for clean cash.

          The GUMPS story is surely becoming a more and more familiar one, but maybe you read the same story I did – possibly by Leah Garchik – where the older woman was bemoaning the fact, and younger one said she’d never heard of the place, and that’s the problem in a nutshell.

  7. Hi all – So this must be the smell of “New Money” – literally!
    STICKY also took a couple of looks, and the answer was obvious from all the clues.

    Not much else to observe, so I’ll wish you all a great day as we warm up and you cool off soon (the sun returned this morning).

    Angela, I thought that was a particularly good poem and writeup today. I especially liked the reference to the WHEAT penny (I also liked Mercury dimes), and the interesting word for coin collector. It made me think that if a numismatist got engaged to a philatelist, the typesetter for the wedding announcements might sprain a finger. Better just stick to STAMPing out coins.

    For mint songs, I thought that in remembrance of the “Carter Quarter” I might quote Creedence Clearwater’s “Susie Q”, but I can’t do better than the lyrics to yours:

    • LOL…And speaking as a philatelist, I must say that it does get STICKY at times…but it’s worth it, since most stamps are as pretty a PENNY…😉 Thanks very much for the Shout Outs, G.., I appreciate it…but it was a gem of a PUNNY puzzle to begin with..The material was there…🎶And all the people that come and go…Stop and say hello…🎶 …Have a good one, G…but cool off?
