CARTOON ANSWER:

THE KING HATED HIS CHAIR AND WANTED IT TO BE – – –

UHNTTOORE = “THRONE” OUT

Happy Wednesday, Jumble friends! It was another easy-breezy puzzle today with all of the clue words coming instantly into view. LAUGH is a new clue word making its debut into gameplay which is surprising since it’s such a common word. My choice for the most difficult anagram of the day would be COLONY because of those pesky double O’s. FRENZY is the oldest clue word of the quartet and I had to search way back to 12/02/14 to find it. Finally, after all of the clue words were solved, I noticed that the last three all ended in Y.

The setting for today’s cartoon brings us to a throne room where we encounter two men having a conversation. By reading the dialogue and sentence we discover that the gentleman on the left is the king and he’s very displeased with the look of his chair. He complains that it’s not modern looking which is surprising since it’s decked out with winged serpents, animal print upholstery, talon shaped armrests, and even realistic looking claw feet. I’m not sure how much more “modern” he can go, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his eccentricities lead him to choose a toilet for his next ceremonial seat of power!

There were a couple of fun details in today’s panel that quickly caught my attention. Just above the back of the chair we see a royal crest which is separated into three sections. The largest section contains an image of two swords crossed. The second section was left blank, while the third one had a winged serpent. Above the crest is a crown with Jeff’s signature “J” serving as its jewel. His majesty is also wearing a royal crest on his blazer but it doesn’t quite match the one that we see on his seat. His crest has only two sections with the first containing a wing-less snake and the other displaying the crossed swords.

The letter layout for the final solution was absolutely brilliant! Even though the wording of the sentence brought the surprise answer to mind, I still marveled at how well hidden it was. If the answer didn’t come to you right away, you probably had some work to do trying to decipher it. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. Good Morning, Mike! Three CHAIRS! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Have a good one! ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  2. ๐ŸŽถ Oh, when the saints go marching in, Oh when the saints go marching in…Dear Lord, I want to be in that number, When the saints go marching in…Oh, when they gather ’round the THRONE….Oh, when they gather ’round the THRONE…Dear Lord, I want to be in that number, When they gather ’round the THRONE..๐ŸŽถ.”When The Saints Go Marching In” – Louie Armstrong 1938

๐Ÿ‘‘ I always had a problem with the thought of hierarchy,
I think it kind of NUTTY bowing down or taking knee.
A COLONY’s a colony, must people be so ruled?
And what’s the need of furniture adorned with all the boule?
I may start up a FRENZY here by saying things like this,
It’s just that I think Royalty has outlived what is bliss…
In life we LAUGH, we cry, we sulk…a lot’s done with a pout…
But homage paid to mere mortals? A practice best “THRONE” OUT! ๐Ÿ‘‘

CHAIR YE! CHAIR YE! Once again today, the descriptive cartoon and on-point dialogue SAT the solution right onto our LAPS, so with that done, I took my tREIGN of thought back to our words. As funny as this may seem, could LAUGH possibly be seen HEIR for the first time? It MITE..ER, or it might not! And FRENZ, Ye haven’t seen this word since December 2nd, 2014! How’s that for an OUT-DATED SENTRY? I mean entry? …Anyway, our cartoon…Today Jeff brings us to a ROYAL PALACE…We see a KING, “ROY-AL, the First”, speaking with his Valet, NATE. The topic of discussion is the ROYAL THRONE. ROY-AL seems a little up in ARMS, and is heard saying that in an effort to modernize things, he thinks his THRONE must go. We HEIR…”Get rid of it”…OR,”NATE, I hate it. It must be “THRONE” OUT! HA! SEAT what he did HEIR? Good one, David!

Ok, eye candy…This panel today is anything but the RULE! Color, color everywhere…A ROYAL BLUSH! The Gold Crest on ROY-AL’s Blue jacket is PATTERNed after the Coat-Of-Arms on the Throne, but with a slight difference. Not exactly a PAIR to the Throne. He has a Black walking stick…but it’s nothing to stand on. He’s a little HEIRy…A mustache, a rather long soul patch, (perhaps a Van Dyke)? ..A few wisps of HEIR at his neckLINE, and there’s some sort of amulet at his neck, that I can’t define…AMULET you guess what it might be. He sports a small
hoop earring. NATE? Standing IN WAIT, in his Brown Suit, he’s not looking too CHAIRy about his task. But the CROWN JEWEL today? That THRONE! From the top…The CROWN is adorned with the Jumble J. The Green Coat-of-Arms shows Crossed Swords and a Winged Serpent, with its Tongue lashing out…Don’t ASP me why. The upper part of the Chair, consists of a Purple-Winged decor, while the Supporters are Serpents, their faces in a scowl. The back is upholstered in spots, with the entire bottom of the Chair covered in a ghastly shade of red…The arms are curled under like talons…And the feet? Well, your guess is as good as mine…Some sort of Animal Paws with Three-Toed Digits…but I can’t put my finger on it…All in all? ROYALLY GARISH…A definite LAMร‰ OF THRONES from which I may never RECOVER! Guaranteed…It’ll be giving me KNIGHTmares for weeks to come! So, There you have it Folks, Done. Have a great day, Everyone! UnFORTUNEately, once again HEIR in NYC, it’s still pouring REIGN, and PRINCEipally gloomy…But I’ll leave you with a CHAIRy thought…Let’s all be like Pineapples today…Yes…Pineapples! Standing tall, wearing CROWNS and oh so Sweet on the inside! ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. The young lad had a great LAUGH when his ant COLONY went into a FRENZY after testing the NUTTY flavoured leaves.
I agree with you Mike that COLONY was the most difficult word—could not use the LY trick and the double O also was a No NO. But after backing into the needed letters, it was apparent. DUH.
The solution was a blind solve without the two Os from colony—clever word play on THRONE and THROWN. I also appreciate all the details you point out. Thanks.
Angela—I can never get enough of Louis Armstrong—thanks for a great marching song.
I don’t have the same antipathy toward royalty that you mentioned in your poem, but then I know many Englishmen and women who share your sentiments.
Loved your post and the pun-filled prose—brilliant Wednesday wording.
Clearing skies here this AM–hopefully a harbinger of days ahead.
Enjoy or endure “Hump Day” everyone.

    • Excellent use of the words today, Earl! They were blended perfectly which made your sentence not only flow naturally but painted a vivid picture as well.

Enjoy the clear skies on your Wednesday. Itโ€™s reigning cats and dogs here! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • I didn’t see your post when I started to write and thought I’d take a stab at it. I like yours a lot better. Nice work.

      • Interesting how two people can compose a sentence using the same four words and come up with such totally different scenarios.. I enjoyed yours and was impressed with not only the flow but the setting your painted so well.
        Brilliant, I say.

    • Good Morning, Earl. You have no idea how thoughts of you gave me PAWS weighing my decision this morning…I was concerned about offending you, both with my song choice and my poem. I remember a while back when I paraphrased ๐ŸŽถ Amazing Grace๐ŸŽถ you “took me to task” ..๐Ÿ˜‰, and the Poem? Well…being our resident Anglophile, I couldn’t believe I was giving you the old One-Two punch this morning…But it all just came so easy, I had to let it REIGN! Like the way we took different turns with NUTTY…your imagination always impresses…As for Satchmo? Now there was a KING of Jazz! And it’s not really antipathy..more like a ROYAL indifference…To each his THRONE, I always say…๐Ÿ˜‚ Thanks much for the Shout Outs, I tRULEy had a good time with this one today! …And it’s begun to clear up HEIR too! Long live Mother Nature! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Have a good one, Earl! ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  4. Good morning. The Colony was in a Frenzy because the Nutty court jesters laugh was so irritating,it sounded like a hyena. Thank Mike on all the extras,I still could not see the J with my magnifying glass. Angela, nice song choice and poem, plus all them puns. I had a laugh on laugh as it was the last word I got. It took me an extra two minutes to get and when I saw it just laughed and shook my head. The cartoon answer was simple even though It had a quotation word. I usually dislike the meaning but I thought this answer was cute. Once I figured the last word was out,the first word came right away. Another good outcome. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Great job, Paul! Your sentence was a perfect compliment to todays cartoon. I especially enjoyed your use of hyena after seeing the animal print in the panel.

My fingers are crossed for a challenging puzzle tomorrow. Take care!

    • Hey Brooklyn, Good Morning…Well! Look at you! Kudos, Bud! Three CHAIRS! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป … But tell me the truth…After you do one of these…do you sit and wonder where it all was when you were back in school? ๐Ÿ˜‚ You’re getting better and better at it, Paul.Keep at it! …And LAUGH? You know what they say…”He who LAUGHS last…doesn’t catch on very fast”! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Thanks for the Shout Outs, Brooklyn…You’re a CROWN JEWEL in my book! Have a good one! ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  5. The first word I saw for the answer was hotter, which made no sense. Putting the t and h together quickly gave me the answer.

    • Good morning, Caroline! Major kudos to David for such a cryptic layout โ€” itโ€™s easily the best Iโ€™ve seen in quite some time. I didnโ€™t see hotter at all so nice catch. Looking at the anagram again, I see hunt which kind of makes sense with all of the animal parts of the throne. Have a wonderful day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Nutty seemed to be a recent repeat?Colony was the tough one for me,as well as laugh,as I thought the laugh scramble started with a g.Out was a given for the 3 letter solution, with throne a tougher solve.

    • Good morning, Chuck! NUTTY was last used on 2/16/17, and COLONY on 7/25/17.

The leading nature of the sentence and the avoidance of THRONE gave it all away for me. As I mentioned previously, the anagram was so well crafted that it could make for a challenge. Iโ€™m glad to hear that you were able to figure it out. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  7. All of the clue words were instant solves, but the answer wouldnโ€™t come , so I had to break out the pen today. I wrote UHTT and the answer came to me for some reason. Who knows how the subconscious mind works!

    • Hey, John. Itโ€™s actually good to hear that you were able to spill some of your precious ink so your pen doesnโ€™t dry up on ya!

I thought Jeff wouldโ€™ve used a quill and paintbrush instead of the crossed swords on the crest which would have made for some interesting conversation. What he nailed was the Kings hairdo โ€” no need to worry about a receding heir line there!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚

  8. Easy puzzle today even with the quotation ” marks which can often spell trouble. Great analysis as always, Mike. Happy Wednesday everyone.

    • Well said, Betty. I saw the quotes and expected a real challege as well. Thank you for the kind words and hopefully the sunโ€™s shining bright for you today! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Hi all – Today I looked at the cartoon and answer layout first, and it came to me right away because of the gaudy throne. Then the words did also, but my first thought was โ€œOh-oh, Davidโ€™s on to us and our tricksโ€ because neither the double letter nor the -LY trick would work. Fortunately Mikeโ€™s other trick of putting just the โ€˜Yโ€™ at the end gave it away.

I thought that when the chair gets thrown out, it might be coming soon to an Antiques Roadshow episode near you. If not that, it could appear on a show produced by Merv GRIFFINโ€™s company, or with the claw feet, possibly serve as a model for an animated episode of โ€œChip โ€˜n Daleโ€ – after all, itโ€™s already drawn as a cartoon.

Thanks for a new word Angela; I had never heard of โ€˜boulesโ€™ before. Itโ€™s possible that thatโ€™s where the word โ€˜bowlingโ€™ comes from. Hope the rain clears up for you and Mike today.

    Have a great day, everyone.

    • Excellent point about David being on to our tricks, Steve! I thought the exact same thing so thank you for putting it into words for all to see. ๐Ÿ™‚

The reign has passed and the sun has come out to play. Kids are outside building a mud fort. Iโ€™ve no clue what it is or how itโ€™s constructed, but this king is pleased because he finally has some P&Q! Enjoy your day!

      • Glad to hear that Mike. We didnโ€™t see the sun at all yesterday because the thick fog layer never burned off all the way, but I expect it will clear around noon for us also today. For Betty, probably not so much! Have a good one. I canโ€™t watch the Aโ€™s today because itโ€™s Facebook-only. โ˜น๏ธ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

        • Betty-Steve…I hate to say it and chance putting the mouth on myself…๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿป( that’s the horns)๐Ÿ˜‚! ..but it got beautiful here…really beautiful…G, maybe your Shout Out brought us luck! We’re taking advantage and eating waterfront…Except for a seagull that just started eyeing my food from across the way?…It’s fantastic here…Hey..Favor? Root for my Staten Island boys to win today? Cutie patooties..they got such heart! And talent! Staten Island’s all excited! Go Mid-Island! โšพ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Of course Iโ€™ll root for them! Got nothing better to do with the Aโ€™s on Facebook-only. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I lost track of how the RI team is doing.
Guard your lunch from those seagulls! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

            • Steve..You do realize that’s the 4th time you’ve mentioned the A’s on Facebook, right? Do they have you working on commission or something? ๐Ÿ˜‰ We know…we know!! It may be time for one of your Craft Beers…drown those sorrows a little..๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿ˜ฅ There is radio…But you know you can always throw up a Facebook account…you don’t need any “real” information or anything..it’s no big deal. ..Anyway…RI’s out since Saturday or Sunday. Lost to Iowa or Idaho..No Iowa..Des Moines…Jonathan Livingston is gone…Food’s gone…We’re just finishing up the Magaritas.. Game’s at 7:30, ESPN…Psyched! Later, Gator. โšพ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • G..Just saw this. It has a gazillion definitions…could be, I’d have to look into it. But you know that wasn’t the meaning I was going for right? ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  10. No sun here either, Steve. I think it made a brief appearance in my neighborhood yesterday between 3:00 and 3:30 but that was it. Usually when the children go back to school it gets warmer so there’s still hope – surely September and October will be nice.
