CARTOON ANSWER:

THE BASEBALL TEAM WAS MOVING AND THE JERSEY SELLER WAS ABOUT TO – – –

RIIHSHLSESOT = LOSE HIS SHIRT

Happy Tuesday, everyone! All of our clue words this morning were old favorites. RIGID is the oldest of the group with its last appearance on 7/13/16. At first I thought LOOSEN was LESSON and even started to write it in the answer blocks. Luckily, I only got a few letters in before I noticed that I didn’t have enough S’s and paused to find my error. Because of this simple goof, it’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day.

As July comes to a close, it looks like Jeff gave us a cartoon with a very similar theme. The Jumble City baseball franchise is leaving town and the stadium we see in the background is about to close its doors. Of course this closure will mean that nearby merchants selling souvenirs will also be forced to close their doors turning their once bustling shops into virtual ghost towns full of useless merchandise.

The shop that we see today has decided to slash prices and make as much profit as they can. The sign at the checkout counter says that everything is 80% off which is a great deal for the shopper that we see browsing the racks. The merchant, knowing that customers will be hard to come by, attempts to make a 2 for 1 deal. The wise shopper knows he can do better and haggles for a 4 for 1 discount which I can only assume the merchant will be more than willing to accept.

Noticing the shirt that the merchant was wearing, I tried to figure out the actual name of the baseball team it depicts. Is it the Jumble City Diamonds? The Jumble City Gems? Or is it something even more obscure such as the Jumble City Jewels? Perhaps we’ll never know so I’ll add a poll question to this post where you can select your best guess!

The final solution to this Jumble was a piece of cake after observing all of the visual clues in Jeff’s amazing cartoon. LOSE HIS SHIRT instantly came to mind after reading the cartoon sentence making for an instant solve. Have a terrific Tuesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

On a final note, I’d like to take a moment and wish longtime JumbleAnswer forum member Lelia a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Lelia turns 79 years young today!!! Please be sure to take a moment and leave her a birthday wish in the comments section. It’ll surely brighten her day just as much as her thoughtful stories and daily insight into the Jumble brightens ours. HaPpY bIrThDaY, LELIA!!!

      • “There is no joy in Jumbleville..”. The opposite of Oakland, where the baseball team is all we’ll have left soon.

        • You know I was going to mention the Raiders in my post..but I figure I’ll wait for the right time. We don’t want to start blurring our Sports too! 😉🙋🏻

  1. 🎶 BUY BUY love…BUY BUY happiness…Hello loneliness, I think I’m gonna cry…BUY BUY love…BUY BUY sweet caress, Hello emptiness…I feel like I could die…BUY BUY my love, goodbye…🎶 “Bye Bye Love” – The Everly Brothers – 1958

⚾️ The Jumble City Diamonds..It looks like they’ll be gone
We’re not sure where they are now…but that vendor? Put upon…
I feel for him, but “LOOSEN up”, is what I want to say…
I think his SPOTTY sales are caused by looking the wrong way.
Instead of thinking worthless, think Collector, think a find,
    It’s not a HARSH decision, he’s too RIGID…Stop! Rewind…
I’d take a different outlook, promote as souvenirs…
Tell people that the Jerseys of the team that they revere?
Will someday bring them money, think the Dodger team of old,
Memorabilia reading “Brooklyn” is worth it’s weight in Gold…
He needs to take that frown of his and think about the worth…
Let PR work, redo those signs…And he won’t LOSE HIS SHIRT! ⚾️

Our words today, all Sweet Repeats…and none of them are HARSH. Which happens to be most recent…We just saw it in March! Good words, great anagrams…On to our cartoon! Today Jeff brings us to a Sporting Goods Shop, in the shadow of the JUMBLE CITY BASEBALL STADIUM. Actually, the Stadium is shadowed…in the background, in blue. And it’s a nice contrast to the Red JERSEYS up for sale…The sun must be shining, because we can see the lines radiating across the glass of the Shop’s window. We see the proprietor of the shop, YOGI BEARer, looking exhausted and forlorn, offering a patron an additional bargain…Already discounted at 80% off, he’s now heard offering the JERSEYS at 2 for 1. To which the Sports Fan, SPORTing that Soul Patch Jeff’s so fond of, answers that he’d rather WIND UP with 4 for 1! Can you believe this guy? He should be arrested for STEALING! Listen, let’s not beat AROUND THE BASES here…I mean around the bush here. The fan’s feeling that he could WALK OFF with THE HOLE store, because Yogi’s handling it all wrong. He’s BALKING, when he should be talking! It’s all in the HYPE…HYPEthetically speaking! Instead of bemoaning the fact that the DIAMONDS are leaving, he needs to CHANGE UP, and APPROACH it from the OPPOSITE POLE! Advertise these JERSEYS as Collectors items, and I BET he’d not only CLEANUP, he’ll be COUNTing that money while crying ALL THE WAY to the bank! Have you tried to buy a piece of Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia today? It’s all RALLY expensive… Hmm…Where is this JUMBLE CITY anyway? Maybe I can get OUT there and write up a Business PLAN for this guy? Anyway…With the DIAMONDS in the ROUGH…and our question asking…What was the seller about to do? ..LOSE HIS SHIRT. Great pun, Guys…But I’m still calling FOUL with the GAME PLAN…

OK, eye candy. It’s hard to GET BY that harried look on Yogi’s face…I’d like to STRIKE it OUT. The JERSEYS are cute, but they’re pullovers…I favor the ones with the buttons POSITIONed just RIGHT…Although I am FACETnated by the DIAMOND logo. And UP TOP, ‘oer the STADUM, I can see the BOTTOM of the Scoreboard at LEFT. I do FIELD that’s a nice touch…There’s turnstiles and entrances to the STADIUM…Nice details, yet they’re not GATEing it either. But you know what Jeff did to really make this a BANNER day? Across the Stadium facade, it reads “Thank You, Fans. Goodbye”. It was the FIRST thing that CAUGHT my eye…See it UP there, between the SECOND and THIRD TEAR? Nice… So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…as Yogi always said…”A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore”! ⚾️🙋🏻

    • Just noticed your last line Angela. Had a good laugh. It’s so true!! The man was one of a kind. Thanks again for the extras. Without the computer we just don’t see everything.

      • Hey, Bud…Glad you got a laugh! Why’d you think I named the guy YOGI BEARer? I was working up to the punch line! 😂 Yep, Yogi definitely was in a class by himself..He was the quintessential DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH, right?…And you’re very welcome for the eye candy…Sweets for my Sweets! 😘🙋🏻

  2. Paul…We haven’t heard from you since Saturday..What’re you up to Brooklyn? 🤔🙋🏻

  3. Good morning. Nice work Mike. Always enjoy the extras you put in. Angela, terrific choice of song, poem and puns. Regarding your message Angela. Sorry about that. My priorities changed a bit since I had the allergie attack last week. Before I would not leave the kitchen table until I got the blog and said my piece. Lately l’ve been busy and couldn’t wait for the posting. Sunday I helped my friend with two words and she called me back with the cartoon answer. I attempted to post twice but other things came up. Yesterday I was out the door early and although I solved it I forgot to come back and post. Today I just had to say “Hi” No problem with the words but I had an easier time with the six letter ones that the five. The cartoon answer took about five minutes to get. A couple of first thoughts proved wrong. Staring at the letters finally gave me the correct answer. Until tomorrow stay well. Oh,Happy Birthday Lelia. I do hope you have a great day with family and friends celebrating another wonderful year. Your input into jumble always makes me smile. I’ll raise my glass of orange juice to many, many more.

    • Hey Brooklyn! Good Morning! No apology necessary, Bud. I was just getting worried about you. We got no CONTRACTS signed here, you don’t have to come out to the BALLPARK every day! .😉 .But I just figured 2 days in a row? Not like you…And especially that you haven’t been feeling well, and was OUT on the DL? I was concerned…But TBT, if I didn’t hear from you today? I was gonna shout out to Marie! I know she’s Pun Shy, 😉, but from one Brooklynite to another, I was taking the shot! 😉 Thanks for the Shout Outs, it was a fun write! You know anything Baseball always puts me in a good place…Have a good one, Bud, and I hope you stay well! 😘🙋🏻

    • Hi, Paul! I know that the posts have been mid-morning and I’m sorry they’re not sooner. Real life gets in the way and I have to prioritize…..
I was doing the early bird, so perhaps I’ll start it up again with just the answers being sent out after midnight and I’ll fill in the blanks later. I don’t want this blog to become one of those awful answer websites that have no personality. The Jumble has and always will be a special part of my life and my intention is to do it justice by making a quality post each morning when I have the time. I hope you understand……

  4. The actor was told to LOOSEN his RIGID neckwear so his complexion would be less SPOTTY and HARSH.
The only clue word to cause a tic was HARSH. The solution? A pushover as opposed to a pullover. Clever play on words again today.
Great post Mike and thanks for the heads-up about Leila’s birthday.
Angela–great song –love The Everly Brothers. I thought of the old Marilyn Monroe classic–“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” this morning.
Like your poem and I also thought of the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn when I saw the cartoon.
I am at the hospital today subbing for an ill friend. More later perhaps.
Happy Birthday Leila, I hope it is filled with fun, family and friendly frivolity.

    • Good Morning, Earl. Thanks for the Shout OUTS, There was no way to STRIKE OUT today..I had good material to work with! Great sentence…I guess that guy was really CHOKING UP, huh? 😂 I’m a FAN of the Everly Brothers too…I should go through their PLAYlist, and try to use them more often…Did you really think Brooklyn Dodgers too? At least 5 of the 8-9 guys I “Jumble” with every morning are Brooklyn born and bred…And only one of them mentioned it to me…I was BUMmed! But I should have known you and I would FIELD the same way…Kindred spirits! Marilyn? Not a bad choice…But she was more of a YANKEE FAN! 😂😂
Have a good one, Earl…Hope to CATCH you later! ⚾️🙋🏻

  5. Thinking the middle word was “the” slowed me a little, but I saw lose and the rest fell into place.
🎵Happy Birthday, Lelia 🎵🌈 I agree with all that Mike and Paul said and wish you the best.

  6. Like Caroline, I too though “the” would be the middle word since it often is. However all in all it was an easy puzzle. Happy Happy Birthday Leila. May you have a wonderful day and a good year to follow.

  7. No problem w the words or solution.Being back, meant I could engage in my other passion GOLF both yesterday and today, after all both Monday and Tuesday do end in a ‘Y’.

    • Hey Professor! Y not? Glad you got to PUTT yourself out there! And 2 days in a row to boot! 👏🏻👏🏻 Must have felt grand! And yes, it was an easy fun one today! Enjoy, Chuck! ⚾️🏌🙋🏻

  8. Hi all and Hi Lelia, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It may not be a milestone technically, but it’s still a well-earned accomplishment, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful day!

Saw the answer immediately, but then the third and fourth words took extra time, first LOOSEN, not LESSON or SALOON, and my hardest, SPOTTY, not TOPSY or SOYPOT for making tofu.

Angela, Bye Bye Love, a mashup of the Jumble and the Asimov Quiz!

I may have said this before, but the cartoon reminded me of a vendor at the farmers’ market who was wearing a Sharks Ryan Clowe jersey after he had been traded. A few weeks later he had an (also traded) Devin Setoguchi jersey. I said, “What’s with the jerseys, you buy them and then they get traded?” He said “No, they get traded and then I buy them – This only cost me 10 bucks!”
(And no, I don’t think a Setoguchi jersey is ever going to become a collector’s item.)

    Have a great day everyone.

PS – I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t have many new or unique experiences, but last night’s commercial-free Oakland A’s game radio broadcast as a tribute to Bill King was quite amazing. So odd to hear the announcers talking with someone in the booth, say ‘Ground ball to short and that ends the inning”, and just continue on with the story. Bill was never shy about calling out incompetent referees or umpires, but I hadn’t heard that his nickname for the former commissioner of baseball was, appropriately, “Bud Light.” 😂

    • LOL..That’s a good one! Totally apropos…And it COVERED all the BASES too! 👏🏻 And yes, you have told the Farmers Market guy story…but it still has a few miles left on it! You get a pass…😂 ..And we can never tell what might be a collectors item to someone, right?…There’s no accounting for taste! 😂 Enjoy, G! ⚾️🙋🏻

    • Steve, I got a kick out of your jersey story. Fits the puzzle perfectly.
The farmer at our market had a good shirt on – “Someone has to feed you people.”

      • That’s a great shirt! On the back it probably says “because without us, you’d starve”, or “because we know you can’t do it yourself.” 😂

  9. Hi, Mike et al! My Jumble puzzle solve today was an instant solve of the cartoon answer and then a quick solve of all 4 words including SPOTTY which took me an extra few seconds.

Mike, I enjoyed your comments to me yesterday but your HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me today was absolutely wonderful and I wholeheartedly appreciate every word. I will be smiling for quite a while!

Thank you to all of you who wished me a Happy Birthday even if you did it in obedience to Mike’s request. That made me smile even more. What a guy!

Both daughters are taking me to The Cracker Barrel today for lunch. Jerry has already taken me out 3 times to Country Buffet and the girls took me to the Old Spaghetti Factory and tomorrow my youngest granddaughter & I will eat lunch together at Top Shelf. I get a lot of mileage out of a birthday, but these Jumble Happy Birthdays are a very special treat so I thank you again for every wish and every word.

Another B-day present to me was that our house suffered no damage last evening when we had our worst wind & dust monsoon of all, followed by torrential rain, while more than a thousand houses were out of power.

I wish all of you a very Happy Day!!!

    • Happy B’Day, Lelia..And please don’t think my well wishes were sent in “obedience to Mike’s request”…We knew it was your Bday today! Have a good one, and enjoy it all! 🎂🙋🏻

    • It’s only fair, Lelia – you’ve put a lot of mileage INTO those birthdays! 😂
