Happy Thursday, everyone! Earlier in the week I wrote about how noticeable it was that David had been utilizing unique and somewhat obscure words to transform his puzzles from ordinary to extraodinary. That trend continued this morning with the addition of not one, but TWO new clue words in the lineup. ABUZZ and MALADY make their debut and they both had me stumped. MALADY was the more challenging anagram with Mr. Hoyt choosing to spell out DAY to throw us off track. In case you were wondering, a MALADY is an ailment or disease and not what you might call a woman from a noble family. 😉

The setting for today’s cartoon is Mount Rushmore and it’s a location that we’ve seen numerous times in the past. Upon first glance it appeared as though a gentleman was giving a speech to a group of reporters with the gigantic carved sculptures providing a backdrop. Reading the dialogue and sentence we discover that the man, who is not named but appears to be drawn in the likeness of Mount Rushmore’s sculptor Gutzon Borglum, is informing the press of the opening date for his creation.

You may have noticed in the cartoon that the opening date for the monument was given as October 31 (Halloween). Jumble cartoonist Jeff Knurek didn’t just randomly choose this date and a quick internet search revealed that it was in fact the official opening date back in 1941. Today, Mount Rushmore is open all year, seven days a week, with the exception of December 25th.

The final solution to the puzzle was a piece of cake. UP was given to us as the first two letters in the anagram leaving HEADS to be deciphered in a flash.

On a final note, Jumble wordsmith David L.     🇺🇸 The press was all ABUZZ back then in 1941,
    We see a PERKY Rep announcing work is finally done.
    The PR Staff was SHREWD with this and gave these interviews,
    So that the day of opening would prove to be big news.
    One wonders if those suffering from acrophobia…
    The MALADY that deals with heights would have their fears occur…
    The Memorial’s majestic, the crowds will surely come,
    The interest had been building ever since work had begun…
    So now that it’s completed, they can raise those Champagne Cups,
    The day is here, Mt Rushmore fans, and this is your HEADS UP! 🇺🇸

    So, I believe we have another two new words today. ABUZZ…An odd word, right? Two people telling me this morning that they weren’t sure if they were correct in guessing it. And MALADY. Not an everyday word, but a good one! David’s definitely RISING to the occasion, wouldn’t you say? Our other words? We’ve seen PERKY January 11th, and SHREWD March 21st. But we’ve definitely seen Mt. Rushmore! Twice this year in fact. We visited on February 1st, and again on March 8th. So this makes our third visit so far for 2018…And the way my mind words, I’m figuring we’ll have one more visit before the year is over…Four Presidents? Four visits! Ok, let’s STEP UP and solve this puzzle!…Uh…solved! LOL! Really! Let’s FACE it Folks, this one solved itself! We have HEADS, we’re looking UP…It’s ETCHED in STONE! David? You ROCK…but by GEORGE…As FOURmidable an opponent as you are? There was no HEAVY LIFTING here today! Good one, but we were ABE-le to see it in a FLASH!

    Ok, eye candy…The scaffolding around LINCOLN’S HEAD reaches all new HEIGHTS. The two workmen encased within the top two rungs, and the one STANDING within the lower section are amazingly detailed. But, the five figures above ABE’S HEAD? I have to be HONEST..Are they workmen? I see no securement ropes. For all I know, they could be LINCOLN LOGS! So I’m deferring to either Jeff or Mike to get to the BOTTOM of that one…There’s a bit of scaffolding under ROOSEVELT’S chin, and perhaps a workmen there too, although it could be some greenery insTED… And there’s silhouetted trees…But I’m going to zero in on the FOURfront…The man speaking appears to be the Sculptor, Gutzon Borglum. Nice likeness. The cameraman at RIGHT, with his camera FACING UPward? I did a little research. The tripod, the camera, recognizable in a FLASH. But the material covering the cameraman’s HEAD? I’m not too sure about its use in the 1940’s, and I’m just trying to COVER all the bases. But what really caught my eye HAIR this morning? It’s 1941…The clothing, the hair cuts, and the mustaches? JEFF? ER..SON? I’m not looking to throw STONES, but..it’s 1941!! How’d they TURN UP in this PICTURE? I’m sorry, but I just can’t take it for GRANITE…So, There you have it, Folks! Done!   4. Good morning. The town was Abuzz because the Perky Princess was so Shrewd in hiding a Malady from her family and the world. Had no problem with yesterday’s jumble or today’s. They all are like a Mondays trend. Will read everybody later if I get a chance. When I realized yesterday that I hadn’t posted it was already late in the evening. Until tomorrow stay well.

  5. Well Mike, to mix cultural metaphors a bit, it appears that you have received the Ultimate Kudo from the Jumble Head Honcho. And well deserved, too. When I saw David’s video last night I just grinned inside knowing how it would surely make you feel. Thank you again for creating this space that all of us enjoy so much.

  6. The SHREWD CEO of the pharmaceutical company used a PERKY spokesperson to pitch a new treatment for an ancient MALADY and had the medical world ABUZZ.
    The two new words did not slow me down and I agree with Paul that it was an easy puzzle, considering we are getting toward the end of the week.
    I had no difficulty with ABUZZ—-Buzz is/was a nickname I first was blessed with in high school.
    Great Post Mike and thanks for sharing the video clip—I haven’t visited it yet, but shall later.
    Angela–thanks for the Ella tune. Love her voice and her choice of songs. I have heard this one but not in years and she did it in the same decade as the Mt. Rushmore opening—great choice on your part.
    Your poem was enlightening and reminded me of the difference between acrophobia and the fear of going outside–agoraphobia.. I fear heights but not going out of doors. Thank goodness.
    Your post and the comments about the haircuts, clothes, etc. urged me to go back and check those details out—thanks. Jeff is usually so meticulous with details that I’m surprised—perhaps there is a reason? Loved your pun with JEFF-er-son.

I too suffer a bit with Acrophobia, but I try my best to SCALE it back! 😉 And, as always with Miss Ella, you’re welcome. Fred Astaire performed it originally for the movie “A Damsel in Distress”, but that was in 1937, so I really appreciate your noticing!   7. Abuzz was the word that took me the longest to solve which seems sort of odd. However the cartoon answer was a given. Thanks for the link to David’s You Tube shout out, Mike. It’s a hoot that he follows our musings. I’ve already solved all the latest online Jumble puzzles so am eagerly awaiting his and Jeff’s new offerings. Happy Thursday everyone.

  9. Hi, all! I knew the cartoon answer immediately. All 4 words were easy for me, but I was glad to have the “U” to help me decide for sure that ABUZZ was the first word.

    As I’ve said before, Jerry & I greatly enjoyed our visit to Mt. Rushmore. If you have never been there, I hope that some day your family HEADS to South Dakota for vacation to look UP at the wonderful artwork.
