CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN IT CAME TO SHOWING OFF HIS ABILITY, THE POOL PLAYER WAS A – – –

STBHOIG = BIG SHOT

Good Monday morning, Jumble friends! SIXTY was the only repeat clue word with the remaining three coming up as new. BERTH and JINGLE were great choices but nowhere near as difficult as BRONCO was. It took several minutes before it finally came into view making it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day.

The setting for today’s cartoon appears to be some type of pool hall where we see a well dressed gentleman calling his shots. His appearance is atypical of the common Jumble characters that we see leading me to believe that Mr. Knurek drew this character in the likeness of a famous billiards player. The pool table is oversized and takes up approximately half of the overall panel space. The addition of the “VIP TABLE” sign and ropes blocking access to the table informs us that this is no ordinary game. Missing were the stanchions that the ropes attach to but they were unnecessary and would seem out of place due to the angle in which this piece was framed.

There were several items of detail that really made this drawing pop. The 8-ball was the only ball on the table that was clearly identified and appeared slightly larger than the other balls. It made you feel as though you were right at the end of the table getting ready to bear witness to this amazing trick shot. The combination of a small boutonnière and a pocket square were excellent garnishes that gave our pool champ a smart and dapper look, but moving my eyes slightly to the right I happened to notice the man using a small chalk block on the tip of his cue stick that I originally overlooked!

The final solution was no trouble at all and came instantly to mind. You didn’t need to be well versed in the intricacies of playing pool to decipher this one making it a great way to ease into this weeks gameplay.

A big THANK YOU to Angela for filling in during my summer vacation! I’m happy to be back and look forward to talking about the Jumble with all of you. Have a marvelous Monday and I’ll see you tomorrow! 🎱

  1. Good Morning, Mike! ..🎢It’s so nice to have you back where you belong..🎢 You’ve been missed! But I’ve FELT that you’ve had enough of a BREAK..Time to get out from BEHIND the EIGHT BALL, Bud! …You’ve RACKED up some good SHOTS here this morning! πŸ‘πŸ» Great post…And I hope you have the best day! And as always, you’re very welcome..It was my pleasure..πŸ™‹πŸ»

  2. Good morning. They wrote Jingles about the Sixty year old Bronco rider who still held top Berth. Today’s words were old favorites with bronco being the hardest of them. A typical Monday jumble. Will read everybody later. Take care.

      • Glad your back safe and sound Mike. Hope your vacation was enjoyable. After seeing the first word as an old favorite I presumed the others were the same. I know enough not to assume because, I learned what happens from Felix Unger. Thanks Mike for the hidden treasures and Angela for her terrific post and Earl on the use of the words. I do agree that great minds think alike. Now if only I could believe I’m in that three amigos group. But then I’d have to come up with another name for you guys. Until tomorrow stay well.

        • Of course you’re part of the group, Paul! We can be the Fantastic Four! But seriously, it’s everyone pitching in that makes it so much fun. 😎

        • Thanks for the Shout Out, Brooklyn. I’d be honored to be included in any group you were a part of! Stay cool..it’s soooo hot out there! πŸŽ±πŸ™‹πŸ»

  3. 🎱 I play a round of pool or two, I like to wield the stick…
I learned to play some years ago…A friend taught me some tricks…
I’m not the best by any means, and I’ve been called a BRONCO,
A little wild at the game…But I’ll go mano mano…
There’s certain BERTHs with playing Pool, you have to know your skill,
Just going out to JINGLE Jangle isn’t worth the thrill…
I’ve won myself a purse or two..SIXTY may be the fee,
I’ll wager against anyone who thinks a girl can’t be…
As good a player as a man…because she wears a skirt?
These are the guys I like to beat…with danger they do flirt…
I’m confident, I show respect but one thing that I’m not?
Afraid to take on anyone who thinks he’s a BIG SHOT! 🎱

Great Puzzle, IMO. I enjoyed it…Wishing everyone a great day! Ciao, πŸŽ±πŸ™‹πŸ»

  4. Waiting in his usual BERTH, the SIXTY -year old BRONCO rider wanted his spurs to JINGLE louder than any others
Welcome back Mike. Great post–you certainly are not behind the eight-ball today. Thanks for the details and this blog.
Monday puzzles usually are easy and today’s was no exception.
On duty, will check back, perhaps?

    • Thanks, Earl! Your sentence is very close to Paul’s! You two were definitely thinking alike this morning. I hope your Monday volunteer day is stress free. πŸ™‚

  5. Paul–I wrote my sentence before reading yours. Great minds?
Angela–no time right now to comment on yours–later I hope.

  6. Hi Mike and everyone –
Hope you had a good vacation, Mike. I always appreciate your keen analysis of the puzzle.
BRONCO was by far the hardest for me, too. I had to back in and do some jumbling on paper. I also didn’t recognize BERTH as a word at first. But then I remembered the meaning of it.

    • Thank you, Caroline, and happy Monday! BERTH was also my second choice and it took a few extra glances before it popped into view.

It may be just me but I’ve noticed that David has been using some unique words lately giving the puzzle a breath of fresh air. It’s been making for some great gameplay! πŸ™‚

  7. Easy one this morning. Good grief Chuck are you starting your Christmas shopping already?? I’m impressed. Welcome back, Mike. Glad you had a good vacation. Angela did a great job as always in your absence. Kudos to both of you for this fun activity. Have a Happy Monday everyone.

    • Hi, Betty!!! It’s nice getting back into the groove after such a long time away. And you’re 100 percent correct that Angela did a fantastic job! Have a wonderful start to your week. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

    • Thank you very, very much, Betty! ❀️ Hope you’re having a great day! πŸŽ±πŸ™‹πŸ»

  8. Hi, Mike, et al! I agree with you, Mike, that BRONCO was the hardest solve, which I backed into last. It was wonderful reading your Jumble solve, techniques, thoughts, and best of all, the details that you describe so well for us. Thanks!

Mike, welcome home! I know that you enjoyed your vacation & birthday, but I hope that when you returned, you found your house, yard, and bee hives as you left them.
I, too, am thankful to Angela that you got to enjoy a wonderful vacation with your precious family, but now I am thankful & happy that you are home safe & sound.

    • Hi, Lelia! Thank you for the kind words and warm welcome back. The cruise was fantastic and Bermuda is definitely a place that I’d enjoy visiting again. The weather there was sunny and in the mid 80’s with just a hint of a breeze.

Everything was fine when we returned home and then we enjoyed my birthday and the 4th the next day. I’ve had my fill of vacations and time off and am glad to be back into my morning routine.

I hope you and your family enjoyed the holiday and that all is well. 😊

  9. Hi all – BERTH took an extra second until I put TH together at the end, and then BRONCO took the longest until accidentally putting BR at the front.

I thought someone was trying to SNOOKER me into thinking that a pool table was a billiards table, but just a little bit of research showed me that I could spend all day trying to distinguish among those, pocket billiards, English billiards and many more, so I’ll just take my CUE and exit stage left.

Yes, Angela did a great job, and also pointed out how many new words we’ve had over the last couple of weeks. Maybe David discovered a new Thesaurus or something.

πŸŽ΅β€He’s been gone for such a long time
    (Hey-la, hey-la, {our boy is} back)
Now he’s back and things’ll be fine
    (Hey-la, hey-la, {our boy is} back)β€πŸŽ΅
Adapted from β€œMy Boyfriend’s Back”, The Angels, 1963.
Welcome back, Mike! Hope you had a great vacation and are all settled back in.

    Have a great day, everyone!

    • Thank you, G. 😘 But two days in a row now, 10 words total, and nary a new one in sight…The streak my have come to an end! But it was fun while it lasted, eh?..πŸ˜‰ .And I think maybe David’s Father also PLAYS a big part in ORCHESTRATING these new words! Hope you’re having a good one, and Tks again…πŸŽ±πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Hi, Steve! The words have been spectacular and I hope it continues. It’s nice to be home and watching baseball again. I actually visited friendly Fenway last Tuesday and sat 7 rows back near the Red Sox dugout. Before the game, we sat up front in the β€œBleacher Bar” and watched the Rangers take practice. It was a blast!!!

      • That is extremely cool! I hope there were no snack bars selling fried Grasshoppers, though. πŸ˜‰
Back here just in time for *no* baseball until Friday! 😱 (Except for the All Star Game.)

  10. Steve said there was no baseball except the All Star game until Fiday, actually the Cubs play the Cards on Thursday.

    • Hey Chuck..Yes, they do. I’m looking at the Sked right now. And I told him that there’s the Home Run Derby tonight, too. Might not be a game, but it’s still Baseball, right? BTW..Check out the reply I left for you re: the Festival. I had a few questions…Hope you’re enjoying your night! βšΎοΈπŸ™‹πŸ»

        • LOL..I’m glad I found it too. I love it! And I’m glad you found my reply to you. The replies sort to the original day of post…The reason I’m laughing is because I don’t know if you remember my being Left-Right challenged…(for a lack of a better term)! But you went the step further to tell it to me from both directions! Thank you! πŸ˜‚ Nice to meet you, Prof. I way approve of your attire! Very sharp! But I still have two questions. Would there be any way from watching that I would have known you to be playing the “tuba”? And would you give me the name of the final song? I’m humming it in my head all day yet I can’t put my finger on it…I forwarded through the video to it a few times, because I don’t have it in me to work through “God Bless America” again today. I’m no match for that song, I can’t hear it without crying! And the gentleman singing it did a beautiful job. Send him my compliments…πŸ™‹πŸ»

        • Chuck…Just now..like a ton of bricks! The forest for the trees! 🎢Be Our Guest🎢 From both the movie and the Disney Resort commercials! I coulda’ had a V-8 she says as she slaps her forehead! It drove me crazy all day! Phew! I feel so much better! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ ..Ok, we’re left with just the tuba question…There was no mention of it, right? I’d only know because you told me? πŸ™‹πŸ»

  11. Right Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast. As far as the tuba reference, that referred to the big classical overture number,Omaggio, and there really is no direct reference to it being or sounding like a tuba, other than the rhythm.

    • …And it eluded me all day! LOL.. If you look at my first reply to you, I was stuck on..”Be your Best”.. I thought a commercial, I even thought Disney…but I couldn’t get the lyrics! For shame! They may pull my Disney Card over this! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Let’s hope it doesn’t get out! πŸ˜‰ And thanks for the tuba explanation…I heard it, but I thought maybe there was a reference to you that I may have missed. Again, Kudos to your entire ensemble. And another Shout Out to your soloist as well as your Conductor! She looks like a delightful woman! Think I’ll tune in to the Home Run Derby just to see what’s shaking. IMO though, nothing will beat last year! Have a great night, Chuck, and thanks again. I’ll be watching the video again too…πŸ™‹πŸ»
