CARTOON ANSWER:  RUNNING UP A HILLSIDE CAN BE GREAT EXERCISE

IF YOU ARE – – –

LS   NCE   IN   OID  =  SO INCLINED

Good Morning, Everyone!                 🏃🏻 IT’S UP TO YOU 🏃🏻

🎶 I RUN for hope, I RUN to feel…I RUN for the truth, For all that is real…I RUN for your Mother, your sister, your wife…I RUN for you and me, my friend…I RUN for life…🎶 “I Run For Life” – Melissa Etheridge – 2005

🏃🏻 I do a lot of running, but in no way can relate,
A hill to me is made for ants!…I keep a steady gait.
I pass a FENCE, a park or two, a pothole here and there,
Some look like one’s gone MINING…City life? Always beware!
But up a hill, then down again? Uh, no way, God FORBID
I like to get the exercise, but c’mon who’s to kid?
I’ll do SALSA, skip sour cream, it’s all the give and take,
I’d rather ditch the calories, so hills I can forsake.
The running’s good, it keeps me fit, but there’s no never mind…
To entertain an uphill run? No, never SO INCLINED!🏃🏻

So, it might feel like a Monday morning…but it’s not. Always seems a little OFF TRACK like that the day after a Holiday, right? But it’s Thursday, and as our week WINDS DOWN, we find two words that are Sweet Repeats, and two that may be new. I looked for SALSA and MINING, but it proved to be an EXERCISE in futility…And I think they may also turn out to be the two words to give us an UPHILL battle today…We shall see. Ok, our cartoon. So, where do we find ourselves today? Out West perhaps? At a West STRIDE Story? Hmm. Jeff shows us two male RUNNERS. One we can see and “hear” has been RUNNING for a while now. He’s happy, he’s fit, he’s a regular Man of HEEL…And he even has a favorite hill. The other THIGH, his Buddy, seems pretty much at ease, despite not exactly looking like STRIDER Man. But he’s willing to take a “shot” at RUNNING UP that HILL. No STRIDE and Prejudice here…So with our question asking...UPHILL RUNNING is great EXERCISE, if you’re what?... SO INCLINED! Good one, David…Right on COURSE!

Ok, eye candy…Not much to see. Except for the RUTS in the GROUND, showing that neither the PATH nor the HILL is a ROAD LESS TRAVELED, there’s really nothing JUMPing off the page…Kind of just amounts to a HILL of beans really. So…I’m just INCLINED to let it go today…And There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone…I’m late…I gotta RUN! 🏃🏻🙋🏻

  1. The FENCE around the diamond MINING area did not FORBID the entrance of SALSA dancers to entertain the workers.
No difficulty with the clue words and after a few minutes? of cogitation, the solution was scaled.
Don’t know your song Angela but it is certainly apropos for the cartoon.
Running is something I have never been fond of doing—walking, biking, and sports, yes,
Yesterday a woman from a village near me arrived at her home after running from Boston, MA—a distance of nearly 400 miles. She raises money for breast cancer research. Boggles my mind!!
I enjoyed your poem and post Angela and hope you can keep the days of the week straight—I have the same problem when a holiday falls in the middle of the week.
Did you see the tribute to Irving Berlin and “God Bless America” on A Capital Fourth last night?

    • Good Morning, Earl! ROTFL! SALSA dancers entertaining mine workers? And just where is all this taking place? Keep this up? …That imagination of yours is going to have a tough time getting past the censors! 😷! Kudos, Sir! You tickle me so! Earl…We’ve spoken about Serendipity, but this is really something else! My song choice? Melissa Etheridge wrote it after her battle with and triumph over Breast Cancer, and it’s on her album, 🎶The ROAD LESS TRAVELED🎶!…And here you go and mention this woman from your Village! Talk about mind boggling! That’s a hell of a coincidence! I’m a regular donor..but in light of this? I’m making an extra donation today! God Bless these courageous Warrior Women! Amazing! Ok, The days of the week..? Do you remember me saying that my friends gave me a pillow and a poster reading…”Get a d–n calendar”? 😂 ROTFL! I’m incorrigible! I never know! I’m always..”What day is it”?…What can I say? 😂Hopeless! And yes, I watched the tribute last night…and as usual, used up my share of tissues… If you get a chance, look on-line for the NY Times article (07/02 “God Bless America”, etc..) Steve and I spoke about y’day regarding Berlin. What abuse he withstood over writing that beautiful song…SMH 😔 And again, songs…Listen to 🎶I Run For Life🎶 It makes you want to stand and cheer…Ok, enough..Thank you, once again, for the Shout Out and Poem Nom. I LOVE “cogitation” and yes, SCALED deserves a Kudo of its own..It didn’t RUN past me! 😉 Stay cool, Sir, and have a great day! 🏃🏻🙋🏻

      • Angela–Thanks for the suggestion I check out the NY Times article on Irving Berlin—I’ll try and do it later. I seem to remember that most, or all, of the proceeds from “God Bless America” went to the Boy Scouts of America. I presume the copyright has or will shortly expire but what a generous act for a man who contributed so much to American music and culture.

        • Hey Earl. You’re very welcome. Yes, Berlin set up a fund in the late 30’s, and the proceeds from “God Bless America”, besides the other patriotic songs he wrote, were and still are donated to the Boy and Girl Scouts. I’m not sure about the copyrights though. Not too many people know that…Very cool, Sir! 👏🏻👏🏻 You’ll enjoy the article. (I’d put the link up, but it’s easy enough just to Google). 🇺🇸😂

        • Earl…My friend’s here with me, and he’s saying that the Fund stopped payments a few years ago, because of the discrimination over the issue of gay kids and leaders. I’m not aware of it though. I’m going to look it up as soon as I get through cooking. Keep you posted…Or you do so for me…🇺🇸🙋🏻

        • Earl…There’s a lot of data out there. I did find an article from Crains NY Business, dated 2013 in their Nonprofit News section that does tell about what my friend was saying. He just said that he “knew it from somwhere”. I didn’t question it further. And he’s gone now..But I am curious as to if he’d remember reading it there. I know he’s a subscriber, but it is 5 years ago! I then saw an article from 2016, telling of how the Boy and Girl Scouts “receive a portion of the royalties every time the song is performed”. And there’s data that includes both Kate Smith and his wife in the donating mix. And then…something from 2017 saying the support from the Fund goes to the “Girl Scout Council of Greater NY and the Boy Scouts of America”! As I said, there’s a LOT of data out there! 😂 But from what I can see, the copyrights are in effect until 2034. 🇺🇸🙋🏻

  2. Good morning. I would say our two stars of the cartoon gave us a gift as if it was a start of a new week. No problem at all with the words and when it came time to the cartoon, it was just a slow gait when going up the incline. I used to run all the time. Really enjoyed it and sometimes ran with number one. He would enjoy staying back almost a half length of the quarter mile track, and when it came time to the end of three miles he would shoot past me. Not one of my boys stayed with track a complete season in high school. I finally had to stop running because of all the pain I was in. Great overall post Angela. Listened to the song before posting. Must admit I never heard it. Earl, you had me smiling. You gave a new meaning to fringe benefits for the diamond miners. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn! “Slow GAIT UP the INCLINE”, huh? 👏🏻👏🏻 Kudos! It is an easy, breezy puzzle today…And boy, could we use the breeze or what? The air’s like tar! I can’t wait for this heat wave to break…Thanks for the Shout Out, Bud, and I’m glad you listened to the song. It’s a nice one. I’m sorry you had to stop RUNNING, Paul, it happens. But at least you get the Bocce in..That’s exercise. Fringe benefits? ROTFL! Gentlemen? Where are your MINES this morning?!? Calm down..😉…Or I’ll be RUNNING interference with the censors! Thanks for the laugh, Brooklyn..You never disappoint! 🏃🏻🙋🏻

  3. Biggest problem today was figuring out that it is a Thursday rather than a Monday.A Wed 4th of July holiday can sure mess you up.The good news is that since it is a Th ,tomorrow is Friday,

    • LOL…You ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie! 😂 Did you see my first reply to Earl? I’m a menace with all that! Good Morning, Chuck! 😂🙋🏻

  4. Easy time of it this morning. I too read the article about Irving Berlin that Steve mentioned yesterday in our Chronicle. It was very moving. He was a remarkable man. My grandparents immigrated from Italy in the 1800s. They were grateful and proud Americans to their dying day.

    • Hi Betty. Good Morning! Do you know if it was the entire article from the NY Times? If not , Google it. Really good article. Same thing with my Grandparents. But not until the early 1900’s. Same sentiment though…My Grandmother constantly said “God Bless America”, even when referencing the simplest thing…Like getting an Air Conditioner! 😉Imagine? We always heard it growing up. (Would you believe my cousins and I still say it all the time, whenever something good happens, or we hear of some new technology, etc? Old habits die hard! Good habits die hard)! …And they studied so hard to become citizens and acclimate. They were so excited! A totally different mentality than what we see today…A lot of pride…Ah, life, huh? Anyway…(before I get all choked up again…😔Y’day was enough)! Yes, the puzzle was an easy one! 😉 Wishing you a great day, Betty! Ciao, Bella! 🇺🇸🙋🏻

      • Yes, Angela that’s the article that appeared in our paper. It’s sad to think that Mr. Berlin and indeed our grandparents might not be admitted into this fine country today. We have a very powerful exhibit at our Presidio, a former Army Post, which is now an Urban National Park. It’s called “Exclusion” and is all about the Japanese Internment during World War ll. General DeWill the post commander at the time was responsible for enforcing President Roosevelt’s orders to remove the Japanese people from the West Coast. The names of all the people interred and the camps where we placed them are printed on the windows in a hallway of the museum. We have had many people come through looking for their names and those of their loved ones. It is a painful reminder of a sad time in our country’s history.

        • Hey Betty. It’s funny that you say that. Not funny funny, you know what I mean. But that’s the first thought that came to my mind in light of what’s going on with the immigrant children. I know this isn’t the place to “go political”, but I’ll just say that it’s heartbreaking. I’ve already been in more than one..ahem..”discussion” about it. You know, those (heated) discussions one finds oneself in….I’m going to read up on the “Exclusion”. I have a vague memory of hearing about it, last year or so, but I’m not aware of the details. Thank you for the information..There’s so much we all need to “remember”. Hang in there, la mia Amica! 🇮🇹 🇺🇸🙋🏻

      • George Takei, “Lt. Sulu” of Star Trek, was one of those children interred at Tule Lake, CA.

        • Yea. He talks about it on Facebook sometimes. Different kind of memory, huh? 😥🙋🏻

  5. Hi all – The puzzle was particularly easy today because it was one of my brother’s better off-the-cuff puns. Once when he visited, we took him to the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot, where one of the things on the tour is a cabin which has shifted off its original foundation on a hillside. So the group is all standing on the cabin floor which is at about a 40° angle, the tour guide makes some observation, and my brother says “I’m INCLINED to agree with you!”

Hope you’re all recovered from the holiday and any pets survived the onslaught of noise unscathed. Have a great day!

    • LOL…👏🏻👏🏻 He would have earned a Kudos! The Gravitational Anomaly! Sweet memory, right? ❤️💔 Have a good one, Bud! 🏃🏻🙋🏻 PS: My nephews dog still won’t come out of the garage. Obviously those wrap blankets they sell? Sadly…results? Not so much…🐶🙋🏻

      • Indeed it is a good memory, and he had a couple of other really good ones, I assure you! 😷 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

        • Indeed! LOL..And I think we’ve gone over one or two in the past! 😷 Can’t beat a good memory, Bud..❤️💔 🙋🏻

  6. Hi, all! Running up a hill…great exercise IF you are not jogging in July is Arizona with expected temp of 114 today. Just kidding, but you better go early & be prepared with proper clothing, sunscreen, and your water bottle.

Easy two-minute solve today. One minute for the words, one-half minute to get the words “in” and “on” out of my brain, and one-half more minute for the answer.

After too much barbeque and very late fireworks, Jerry and I slept until 10 a.m., but that’s what retirement is all about. Many of our pubic fireworks displays were cancelled this year for fire prevention.

Steve, thanks again for your Chronicle article about Irving Berlin that I thanked you for yesterday and Betty mentioned again today because it is so important for us to remember. Bet you didn’t anticipate your comments generating so much ink. Thank you also for telling us today the heart-breaking information about George Takei of Star Trek and your fun family story about your brother’s pun that helped you solve the cartoon answer.

  7. Yes, you see, but also bringing in more gangs and crime…better to live in grass valley…you should consider it…you do not need a car here. I am just leaving to go out side to the weekly Farmers Mkt…loads of stands, up and down each street…but I love the nectaries and peaches from this area…..this fair will be each Thursday in July.

    • Good evening, Rosemary. Your fair sounds wonderful! I hope you had a great time, and thanks for stopping in. Be well. 🍑🙋🏻
