Happy Monday, Jumble friends! Last week was rather tame in regards to the difficulty of the puzzles that we encountered. TINLOO, VONGRE and CAYNUL were the most searched for clue words and GET IN THE DOORS took the prize for the most difficult surprise answer.

A new week is upon us so let’s take a look at how David and Jeff chose to challenge us today. Both of the 5-letter clue words were instantly visible and were used late last year. TRENDY required a quick second glance before coming into view but it too wasn’t any trouble. My choice for the most difficult anagram of the day ended up being ATRIUM. I could have sworn that we’ve seen it used in a puzzle more recently but my search showed it was last used on 11/6/16.

Jeff’s cartoon was a feast for the eyes with intricate detail work visible from the moment that you looked at it. Although I wasn’t quite sure what the setting was, it was apparent from the period clothing that we were being transported way back in time. The dialogue and sentence provided no clue as to the exact location of the piece but the sign above the counter reading DEMETRIUS’ DELI tipped me off that this was most likely somewhere in the Roman Empire. A quick search of the name Demetrius showed that it’s a Greek baby name meaning earth-lover. The Romans destroyed Corinth in 146 BC making Greece a province of their vast Empire which gives us a general idea of where this merchant is located.

The deli case has the veiny look of marble and it contains some odd looking cuts of meat. The lamb head was the only item that I could positively identify leaving the other 4 items shrouded in mystery. Next to the deli sign we see two portions of meat hanging from hooks. There are two flies buzzing around the left one which gave the cartoon a very primitive feel.

The final solution was a wonderful Jumble that kept the answer well hidden. The anagram began with CUTE in an attempt to throw us off track. The assortment of products in the case brought MEAT to mind leaving me with 7-letters to unscramble. It took a bit but COUNTER came into view after staring at the remaining letters. This puzzle was a tricky one for a Monday and an excellent way to start the week. Have a wonderful day and I’ll see you tomorrow!

    🐑 Demetrius has set up shop, it’s TRENDY and it’s nice,
    The Deli Meats he features are aged and rubbed with spice.
    He used a Grecian Formula to SCOUT out his venue,
    It’s smaller than an ATRIUM but sized to see him through…
    He says HELLO to all who come, his manners true and old,
    He’s bought a new Abacus to count pieces of gold…
    So up the stairs a customer comes, it’s definitely worth the mounter…
    His wares are fresh, the best in town. Come visit his MEAT COUNTER! 🐑

    KALIMERA, Fellow Jumble fans! My first thought? It’s GREEK to me! My second…easy, breezy, old favorite words. And amusing to see that two of them, HELLO and TRENDY were last seen back to back! 11/04 and 11/5-17, respectfully. That may be a first! Like the ABACUS in our cartoon. A first for our guy, DEMETRIUS! AGORA feeling that perhaps he had a little problem with his DRACHMAS before, ATHENS he FIGUREd he’d finally get something that he could COUNT on…That seems to ADD UP…Anyway, today we find ourselves at an ancient GREEK DELI. The proprietor, DEMI, is seen MEETing and greeting a patron, HELEN. In answer to her question about his new PURCHASE, he tells her that he’s GOATen an ABACUS, which can be seen atop his COUNTER. It’s to help keep track of his LAMB sales. Good move on his part, wouldn’t you say? CHANGE is good…So, with our question asking where he used it…He used it at his MEAT COUNTER! Good one, David…You SOLD me!

    Ok, eye candy…We see a showcase of MEAT, some hanging, with the highlight being a large SHEEPS HEAD. Sheepshead…I fish there…Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn…CATCHY, but no. We see HELEN, a blonde, dressed in a flowing purple robe, who appears to be pregnant. She’s CARRYING a pouch of coins…RICH, but still no. Her hair is done up with braids, she’s wearing earrings and a pendant, and her feet are SHOWCASED in brown strapped sandals…but I’m not getting TIED up with that…On the COUNTER, DEMI has a pouch of coins similar to our patrons’. OVER HEAD from DEMI, we see two CUTS of MEAT, and one’s encircled by two flies! But I’m FLYing by that too…The eye candy? If you look real closely…HELEN’s earrings? They’re ancient GREEK COINS, engraved with two tiny profiles! PRICELESS! You NOSE I’m going with that! And Jeff? Oh TROY, Oh TROY! Great detail. Definitely a CUT above! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! I’m outta here…🎶GYRO, GYRO..it’s off to work I go…🎶 🐑🙋🏻

  3. Good morning. Here I was like a school kid because I was waiting for the early bird special and instead got the mid-day delight. I’ll read everything after running my thoughts. Hello,of course I sent my Scout to check out the new Trendy Atrium at the restaurant. After all,they are my competitors. Today’s words were no problem except for atrium which took longer to get than the other three words combined. Those eleven letters had me stumped at first until I studied the picture more closely. The answer was right there in front of you. Meaning,it was strictly a meat store and the counter was visible. A nice exchange from a routine Monday give-me. Until tomorrow stay well.

  4. I’m not complaining Mike. Usually I’m not this prepared before I get your blog. I thank you very much for all you wrote. It was very informative,really enjoyed it. Angela,great choice on the song and terrific poem and use of the words. You guys along with Earl and the rest of the group,Lelia,Steve etc are the reason why I look forward to reading everyday.     • Oh I know you’re not complaining, Paul, and I didn’t take it that way. It does take some time to research a few things before posting which causes the delay. I just like to be sure that I’m giving accurate information that’s fun to read. If I had the entire puzzle with cartoon the night before, I’d have no trouble doing an in-depth analysis and getting it up just after midnight.

    • Paul, thank you for your “shout out.” I have enjoyed reading what you say for more than 2 years beginning with the day when the cartoon picture was 2 guys fishing, Mike & I swapped fish stories, and you said, “I like your fish stories.” I will never forget how sweet that sounded, and I have enjoyed watching you come out of your shell and tell us all kinds of fun stories.

  5. I agree with ATRIUM – had to back in with quite a bit of jumbling. The animal head looked pretty wild to me.

    • Hey Fellow Lover of the Underdog! Good Morning! Chuck, it wasn’t a mere win, it was a SHUT OUT!!! The Yanks first of the Season, and it came at the hands of the Mets! To go 60 games without being shut out, and then…BAM! As you can imagine, there’s much joy in Mudville today! Had to be those candles, right? Or do you think it was the WINK? Thanks for the Shout Out!   8. Other than atrium I had no problem with the words or cartoon answer. Thanks for analysis, Mike, very informative as always. Your schools get out later than ours. Most of the school in this area complete the term in late May or early June. Hope your children enjoy their summer break.

  11. DONE! Great cartoon picture and fun cartoon answer, which I used to solve ATRIUM.
    My students loved the large, wooden, colorful abacus in my classroom that I made for a math class at ASU.

    I thought 2 doctor appts for Jerry, Tues & Thurs this week were a lot, but this morning he woke with a tooth ache, called & went to our dentist, and now has an appt in one hour with a dental surgeon for a root canal. According to my abacus, that makes 4 appts this week.

  12. Hi all – I saw the IUM right away, and since RATIUM isn’t an element it was a quick jump to ATRIUM. TRENDY took me the extra look today. How did I know the answer right away today? A,BACUS there was a comic recently about a cat up on the kitchen counter. (I commented “counter intelligence” and the author laughed.)

    Don’t worry Angela, there were no horns on that MEATHEAD, so I had no reason to go to the Rolling Stones’ album cover.

    Moving from the meat counter to the produce department, the nectarines around here are getting so big I almost mistook one for an apple this morning. Excellent!
