SYIRK – RISKY

OSNOW – SWOON

CAYNUL – LUNACY

NNIALD – INLAND

CARTOON ANSWER: TO ENTER THE CAVE WITH THE LOW ENTRANCE,

THEY WOULD NEED ALL THEIR – – –

RK  SWO  UNC   IAD   =     DUCKS IN A ROW

Good Morning, Everyone!             🔦 MINORS ARE ALLOWED 🔦

🎶ROCK steady…ROCK steady Baby…Let’s call this song exactly what it is…
(What it is -what it is – what it is It’s a funky and LOW DOWN feelin’
(What it is)…In my hips from left to right…(What it is)…What it is…Is I might be doin’…(What it is)…This funky dance all night…ROCK steady, Baby…🎶

🔦 It’s pretty RISKY business, taking kids into a cave,
A guarantee is needed that no one will misbehave…
A kid with claustrophobia could never pull it off,
A SWOON from fear comes easily, it’s nothing we should scoff.
While little boys are curious, and INLAND treks are cool,
Exploring in a cave may seem exception to the rule.
But putting LUNACY aside, and forging right ahead…
These men decided, “What the heck”, and in the cave they led…
But looking at these faces, do they really want to go?
It looks more like there’s second thoughts ’bout these DUCKS IN A ROW!🔦

With no SWOONing over today’s words, and realizing that INLAND does not spell Inlaid, we’re ready to TREK over to today’s cartoon solution…We find ourselves somewhere in a mountainous region today. Four young boys, accompanied by two scout leaders I presume, are shown at the entrance to a CAVE. Knowing that exploring can’t be boring, our dialogue is telling us that the key thing so FAR is guaranteeing no one hits their head, as they line up SINGLE FILE at the LOW entrance… And that they will all need to DUCK in order to ensure this. So, our question asks…To enter what do they need to get? Their DUCKS IN A ROW! Well shine that light this way, we’re in! Good one, Dave!

Ok, eye candy. Besides the looks of apprehension on almost everyone’s face, the only thing catching my eye? One FLASHLIGHT? Well, no wonder no one’s BEAMing! It’s really not GNEISS! So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And ROCK ON! 🔦🙋🏻

  1. The sea captain’s RISKY decision seemed an act of LUNACY and caused his wife to SWOON as she watched from her INLAND cupola.
Two tics this AM–LUNACY and INLAND. Words with prefixes often cause problems and today was no exception. I had the solution before I finally got that word. Clever word play and no quotation marks–which give me apprehension. Thank you Puzzle Makers.
Angela, you will have to fill me in with your song—I am clueless.
Enjoyed your poem and your puns and the cave in the cartoon was certainly not MAMMOTH.but for amateur spelunkers, right?
    Have a fabulous Friday everyone.

    • Good Beautiful Morning, Earl. I agree, very clever word play. It was an automaTIC solve for me across the board, and I’m thinking it shouldn’t be a problem, especially since it’s a very common phrase. But, we shall see. INLAND was featured here on March 6th-17, but LUNACY goes back to December 2015. And I giggle, because you have mentioned your displeasure dealing with prefixes before! But you prevailed! Thank you so much for the Shout Out, and the Poem Nom, greatly appreciated. As for the cartoon, I did wonder if there was another leader already inside…or were the two shown “Guinea pigging” these poor boys! So much to ponder! 😉 Either way, the cave’s MAMMOTH enough for me! I’m not that big on digging into the unknown. Although I have known a few “cave men” in my time…(Dated one or two also…but that’s a story for another day of exploration)! 😉 I’m loving your sentence, especially the use of Cupola. It’s a wonderful and rarely heard word, and I’ve used it in a piece I wrote about the “widow’s walk”. And when I was redoing my house, I remember bringing it up to my “other” at the time…and what a conversation that was! “What, you want a terrace”?!! ( Ah, yes, Earl…one of the cave men)! 😂😂 Anywayyyyyy…Today’s music choice is Miss Aretha Franklin’s 🎶Rock Steady”. The Queen of Soul, IMO, never disappoints…Wishing you a wonderful Friday, Sir! Rock on! 🔦🙋🏻
PS: Spelunker deserves a very honorable mention also! 😉

      • Thanks for the info on your song–love Aretha and watched a PBS Special
‘”Rhythm and Soul” recently that she hosted. Don’t know when it was filmed but she still had that powerful voice then. I’ll have to do a search on your song.
Thanks also for the compliments, they are always appreciated. For some reason I could not remember how to spell cupola and had to look it up today. I know the word because many older homes along the Erie Canal have them and the story goes they were built so people could see the barges in time to go to the canal and either sell or buy.
Cavemen? I guess we all have that in our DNA to some degree.

        • You’re very welcome, Earl, on both counts. The compliments, very sincere, and well deserved. Yes, I believe I’ve seen the special you’re speaking of. It is a little dated, but she’ll always be the Queen of Soul. Google the song. The minute you hear the opening bars, I’m sure you’ll recognize it. I very much love the look of the homes that sport cupolas. A lot of the old brownstones in Brooklyn seem to have architecture reminiscent of them also. Look up the “widow’s walk”, it’s fascinating. As for the cavemen? Earl, don’t get me wrong. I appreciate a little “caveman” with the best of them…In fact, I seek it out…😉. But you know how it goes…Moderation with everything. It’s just that when the “caveman” starts showing up in the blood tests…(Type C+)? You know what I mean? Then it just becomes time to cut that cord, or vine, or whatever it is…!!! 😂😂 Enjoy, Earl! 🙋🏻

      • First thing I thought on reading the sentence also – “Widows’ Walk” from all the examples I saw around whaling museums in RI and MASS. and from reading Moby Dick and listening to Mountain’s “Nantucket Sleighride.”

      • 🎵”I think I’m sophisticated
‘Cause I’m living my life like a good homosapien
But all around me, everybody’s multiplying
And they’re walking round like flies, man
So I’m no better than the animals sitting in their cages in the zoo man
Because compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees
        I am an Apeman”🎵

🎵”He’s the toughest man there is alive
(Alley Oop) Wearin’ clothes from a wildcat’s hide
(Alley Oop) He’s the king of the jungle jive
(Look at that cave man go!!)“🎵 🐵

    • Earl, here’s a link if you wish. During the 2015 Kennedy Center honors for Carole King (who wrote “(You make me feel like) A Natural Woman”), the actress who plays King in the musical “Beautiful” introduces Aretha Franklin:

      • Steve–thanks for the link, I’ll check it out tomorrow and put my Neanderthal genes on hold. 😱

        • LOL…Neanderthal genes? Didn’t they go out with the Jordaches? 😂😂 Have a good one, Earl! ⚾️🏀

    • Don’t stop at CaveMAN, Earl. We are all walking around with about 2% Neanderthal genes in our DNA (Ooga-ooga! 😂 )

  2. Good morning. Thanks for the early bird special Angela. Enjoyed it but like Earl I was stumped on the song. He nailed it again using the words in a sentence. Had a little trouble with Lunacy and only got it when I solved the cartoon on a blind solve. Knowing the three letters I needed it was easier from there. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good Morning, Brooklyn. You’re quite welcome. I’m thinking…Perhaps I had no trouble with Lunacy..because I hear it so often?!! 😂😂 Everything proves to be useful eventually, huh? 😉 And yes, I agree, Earl is definitely blessed with that logophile gene! Paul, did you see my message to you last night? Clay left a comment for us also. The phrase isn’t one of Yogi’s. He’s known for the “It ain’t over till it’s over”. A sportscaster supposedly coined the phrase about the Fat Lady singing, and the Fat Lady supposedly is an Opera Singer named Brunnhilde. Tell that Bocce Boy of yours to get his facts straight before he tries to school anybody. Is this the same guy that’s always bugging you with his “knowledge”? Hmm…
You want me to talk to him…?? 😂😂 Have a good one, Bud! 🔦😂

      • You gave me a good laugh Angela. No,I forgot to check for a reply from you yesterday. And yes it’s the same guy that has all these interesting facts like which bird is the only one that can fly backwards and which is the fastest bird and how fast. Ill certainly give him the correct fact on who the fat lady really was. Later my fair lady.

        • Hey, Brooklyn! Glad to hear it! Nothing like a good laugh to get the blood flowing! As long as it’s not that dreaded Type C+! 😂 I had a feeling it was the same guy. Got one in every crowd, am I right? And this guy’s got bird questions? That’s really going out on a LIMB! Well, you just give him the old..🎶Straighten up and FLY right…🎶 today…He should understand that! Right up his alley! And you have a great day, my fair Prince! 👑🙋🏻

  3. Morning, all –
I thought of the answer before I grasped how it applied to the cartoon. Funny!
That Yogi line and “It’s deja vu all over again” are my two favorites of his. So true, too.

    • Good Morning, Caroline. I’ve had 3 people besides you tell me the same thing this morning. That the phrase came to them immediately, but they felt it didn’t “fit”. My best thought is the “DUCK”ing ones head to enter the cave, combined with seeing the boys lined up “single-file”…in a row. It is a bit of a stretch, but it’s very funny and very clever. Yogi IMO, “mis” spoke volumes! And I wonder how much of it was him just pulling our legs. I always believed that what Yogi lacked in stature, he made up for in character…And he was a true “character”. Hope you have a great day, Caroline! Be well! ⚾️🙋🏻

  4. I also thought the words and solution were a snap, even lunacy.Originally.I thought it might be ‘ heads’ in a row rather than ducks, but ducks in a row was obvious.
A shout out to you for providing me with an online link to the puzzle,as I am away from my paper, again.1 more, hopefully not last ,time go Cavs.

    • Good Morning, Chuck. You’re very welcome, Sir. Happy to oblige! You’ve got that Ace-in-the-hole now…Always comes in handy! Yes, a bit of a twist to the solution today, but nothing to shed FEATHERS over! So, Chuck,..Away from your paper? Traveling? I’d hate to see you be amongst strangers tonight…you know, just in case you’ll be in need of that shoulder to cry on. JUST IN CASE, I’m saying… One never knows. Well, wherever you are, sit back, fill up that glass….and just enjoy. If it does turn out to be your Waterloo? The alcohol always helps! Once again, I wish you luck, Sir…And let the chips fall where they may! Have a good one! 🏀🙋🏻

    • Your sentiments are shared by those with tickets to game 5 at Oracle. Here’s hoping for a great game Chuck!

  5. We’ve had an easy week so far. No problem with the clue words or cartoon though like Chuck I thought the answer might be heads in a row. Your comments quack me up, Angela. Love your sense of humor. Jeff & David just posted 76 more Jumble puzzles on the Jumble app yesterday. Happy Friday everyone.

    • Good Morning, Betty! And really good one! 👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you, I’m happy to quack you up! TBT, there’s so much sadness and ugliness in the world today, I just try to find the humor in anything and everything… Although you might not enjoy it so much if you were here…You’re fortunate to only get me in small doses…I often suspect I’m surrounded by some people who feel the need to try and curb my “enthusiasm”. And I think this may be the cause of all my insomnia issues…I was sleeping with one eye open there for a while… but you know me..That damn left-right confusion? I’d forget which one was up…Had to keep starting all over…I just gave it up altogether! 😂😂. LOL! More puzzles! I can’t wait! I’m so addicted to that app, I have to limit myself to no more than 3 a day, or I’ll go hog wild. I even like the music! Anyway, I agree this whole week has been a breeze, even today, once we DUCKed past that HEAD issue! 😉 Thanks again, Betty and have a wonderful Friday! 🔦🙋🏻

  6. Hi all – LUCKY led to LUNACY. The double letter trick worked for SWOON (thanks for the tip Clay), and INLAND took a second glance. Then the answer popped out so quickly, I actually started looking for the ducks in the picture, before realizing it was a great pun.

That’s right scout leaders. Send the kid in first to see whether there are still any bears hibernating in there. If there are, they’ll rename it “Karl’s Bad Cavern.”

    Have a great weekend!

    • Karl’s Bad? They were drinking, besides?! Totally irresponsible! Definitely not MERITting any badges for this trek! Have a good one, Bud! 😉🙋🏻

      • That’s CARL, from a different BERG in Denmark! 😂
Did you catch Mike Emrick saying that hockey fans were watching in a movie theater in the middle of the night in Denmark when Lars Eller scored the winning goal?

  7. DONE! One second solve of the cartoon answer and one minute solve of the words, again using the double-letter rule of Clay Davis for SWOON & INLAND. Clay, you never said your rule would work every single time, hence you can never be called a buffoon around here. No worries! So far, however, you are at 100%.

Mike, sorry we didn’t get the challenge you hoped for. Maybe next week.

Jerry and I have enjoyed many caves. The last one we visited was Kartchner Caverns right here in Arizona not too far from us in Phoenix, near Tucson. When the children were little we loved Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. The elevator took us down about 1,000 feet. Wow! There was a really big room way down there called… the Big Room.

Steve, thank you for your gift to me of the heavenly pre-nap song, Crystal Ship, sung by The Doors. What a lovely lullaby. The instrumentals were wonderful, too, but nowadays when certain instruments can sound like many different instruments, I didn’t know whether or not some of the peaceful sounds I heard were piano.

    • Hey Lelia. It was an easy, breezy one today. Rounded out the week. Maybe they’re saving the big guns for the weekend! Have a good one! 🙋🏻

    • Well Lelia, that song isn’t nowadays; it and the album it’s on were recorded in 1967 (amazingly!), when people had to actually sing the right notes and play their instruments.. Although there were a few oddball things like Theremins, Melotrons and Leslie speakers, and studio tricks, the Doors’ Ray Manzarek usually did play piano with his right hand and a bass keyboard with his left.

      • Steve, thank you for verifying my hearing the piano in Crystal Ship, a sound I love. In solving the Jumble today, I, also, said DUCKS IN A ROW before getting the pun. A week ago while Jerry & I watched ice hockey with a friend, he asked me which team I was for, and I told him that I was still rooting for the Toronto Maple Leafs to let him know that I’m not up-to-date on ice hockey. I can’t remember which team you hoped would win the Stanley Cup. Tonight Jerry will be rooting for the Golden State Warriors. He watches only basketball & football at home.

        • Hi Lelia – I couldn’t lose with the hockey. I said that if the Sharks couldn’t win, then I would like to see Vegas take it to make history. But when Washington’s Alex Ovechkin got so close after trying for 13 years, it would have been cruel for him to lose again, and you could see he was ecstatic.
I’ll be watching along with Jerry in spirit!

      • Hi, Steve! I ran in here for a quick peek. Now I’ll run back to tell Jerry you are rooting with us. One of the Warriors’ games was won in the last 5 minutes beginning with a spectacular 3 point shot and one game was won in the last 2 minutes so we have learned that it ain’t over ‘till it’s over.

        • The Warriors are so good tonight, they disproved a cliche. This game ain’t over — but it’s definitely over!

      • Steve you are right! You should say that again on the blog tomorrow because it’s correct and clever.

        • No, I can sympathize with the opponents. The Warrior fans suffered with bad teams and a terrible owner for forty-some years since their championship in around 1975,so we know what it’s like, no need to rub it in.
