CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN NATE SHERMAN STARTED MIDAS MUFFLER IN 1956, IT WAS A GREAT – – –

CACICHARORERE = “CAR-REAR” CHOICE

Happy Friday and first day of June, Jumble fans! With my mind still blown after yesterday’s brain-buster of a game, I decided to get up extra early to see what Jeff and David had in store for us today. All of the clue words were once again quickly deciphered leaving me with high hopes for a challenging finish. PARLOR would be my choice for the most difficult anagram of the day because it’s a word that isn’t used all too often and it took a fraction of a second longer to come into view than the others.

Shifting my attention to the cartoon, the setting was instantly recognizable as an automobile repair shop where we encounter 2 1/2 characters. The man with the oversized pompadour hairstyle was drawn in a manner that was stylistically different than what we’ve come to expect from Jeff and the license plate solved the mystery. The plate stands for All Shook Up which means it’s Elvis that we’re seeing today!

The dialogue and sentence informs us that the automobile shop is a Midas Muffler and Nate Sherman is the the other gentleman that we see. In the early 1950’s, Mr. Sherman operated a family business in Chicago that manufactured car mufflers. With the American economy booming, he had the idea of competing against slower “mom and pop” service centers and decided to create a new type of service station where he could sell his mufflers directly to consumers. It was a huge success and customers embraced his idea of fast and efficient automotive services. MIDAS is an acronym of Muffler Installation Dealers’ Associated Service, and the first franchise opened in Macon, Georgia in April 1956.

My favorite detail in today’s cartoon was very small and easily overlooked if you were rushing to finish the puzzle. In the rear of the shop you’ll see two automobiles side by side. The vehicle on the left has some writing on the rear which appears to be KNUREK in cursive. Knurek is the last name of Jumble artist Jeff Knurek and it was such a surprise when I found it!

The final solve was a grand Jumble that kept the answer well hidden. It was nowhere near as difficult as yesterday’s but it did provide a very satisfying finish. The visual clues in the cartoon brought CAR to mind with CHOICE jumping out at me next. REAR was a quick find to polish off the puzzle and cap off another fine week of gameplay. Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. 🎢 Well I said…BRAKE rattle and roll, I said BRAKE rattle and roll…I said BRAKE rattle and roll…I said BRAKE rattle and roll…Well you won’t do right to save your doggone soul…🎢

πŸš™Way back in 1931, Nate Sherman met Joe Marx,
Together they thought Mufflers were definitely not a lark…
They opened up a factory, made Mufflers their main thing,
As time went on Nate would become America’s Muffler King.
We’re looking here at Elvis, a King is his own right,
His Cadillac DeVille is shown, the color quite a fright!
He’s getting a new Muffler with its brass-flaked golden hue,
And he’s telling Nate that “Golden Touch” has definitely imbued.
Success is on the menu, ’56 was just the start…
Nate’s Mufflers would go on to be the choicest of car parts.
And history began here…”Trust the Midas Touch” was voiced..
And Nate knew that he did ok with this…his “CAR-REAR” CHOICE! πŸš™

πŸš™ β€œYou’re ITCHY for this idea to CATCH on, aren’t you”? Joe Marx said to Nate Sherman, as they sat in the PARLOR waiting for the lawyers to EMERGE from the meetingπŸš™. ….ASIDE TO EARL: Just as I was ready to post, I noticed that I forget to use the puzzle words in the poem…So I went with this instead… 😘

The Early Birds were Tweet, Tweet, Tweeting loudly this morning! As of 4AM, 5 Jumble-Holics called a fumble! Despite having seen them both earlier this year, ITCHY (2/23) and PARLOR (1/12), began running neck and neck to be the words causing EXHAUSTion today. Not as GReasy as we thought, huh? And the solution? VROOM! Asking for absolution! Did I give them the answer though? Well, I gave them all a BRAKE, and offered hints, just hints….Ok, our CARtoon: The year: 1956. The location: Macon, Georgia. The place: A MIDAS (MUFFLER) shop. MIDAS…An acronym of Muffler Installation Dealers’ Associated Service. (And I bet you thought it was JUST Midas as in King Midas and that Golden Touch, didn’t you? So did I!…And if you’re so DRIVEN, there are a ton of articles you can read on-line about NATE SHERMAN and his success story). So, we see NATE, the Man with a Plan, speaking with a customer. Hey, is ELVIS in the house? Pompadour black hair, skinny tie, Cadillac DeVille, BROWN suede shoes? Uhh..Brown? Hmm…Just an aside here: For those who don’t know, Jeff Knurek, the graphic artist-CARtoonist for the Jumble, doesn’t color his daily creations. They’re submitted for publication, and someone else puts color into the panels. Now you know, if Jeff was coloring this? They’d be BLUE…But as it is, how sad are these shoes? HeartBRAKEing, right? And I’m not sure if it COLORED Jeff’s choice at all, but I came across a book, and one of the stories in it mentions how ELVIS was going to record in a studio built on the site of a former MIDAS MUFFLER shop! You can’t make this stuff up, Folks! Anyway…our dialogue shows, that ELVIS is praising NATE for having the “Golden Touch”, and NATE in turn is saying that he’s thinking of franchising. Making it a Big Business, having more than just a job….Looking for a CAREER…A CAReer with CARs…So, our question asks…When NATE started MIDAS, it was a great…”CAR-REAR” CHOICE! “REAR”! ..Where the MUFFLERS go! In a “CAR”! Ha! What a great pun! David, you’ve INSTALLED another one! You, Sir, have that MIDAS TOUCH!!

Ok, eye candy…NATE’S wearing a GOLD mechanics coverall, with a MIDAS name patch, and his grease towel is SEW nice, too…The mechanic installing the MUFFLER under the car, has holes in both his shoes.. but I’m not going SOLEly with that either. There’s little vibrating lines of motion near the MUFFLER…SMOOTH, Jeff! And the Cadillac’s iconic Vintage “V” emblem is a nice touch too..But the Gem? The License Plate. “ALLSHKUP”? 🎢ALL SHOOK UP🎢? One of ELVIS’S biggest hits? How cool is that?…And then, just as I was OIL ready to close up SHOP…In the back, the black car on the left? Is that KNUREK I see written on the trunk? Ha! Jeff? You DRIVE me wild! So, There you have it Folks, Done! ….Have a great day, Everyone! And I’d like to apologize for the length of this…I meant to do a TUNE UP, but I’m just too EXHAUSTed…and I need a BRAKE! πŸš™ πŸ™‹πŸ» 🎢Trust the Midas Touch🎢

  2. The young suitor said it was the ITCHY divan in the PARLOR that caused him to EMERGE from the brownstone and CATCH a train home to Rye.
Today’s solution was not as challenging as yesterdays, but it did take me some extra minutes to solve. (Not good with the dreaded quotation marks, I fear.)
Thanks Mike and Angela for the details about MIDAS Muffler. I knew nothing about the origins of this ubiquitous franchise. I also am grateful that you both point out details in the cartoon which I overlook or miss. I keep saying I’ll be focused but the unscrambling and the solution seem always to be my main task. I HAD to go back and look at the license plate–one of my pleasures is trying to decipher vanity plates which at first glance seem meaningless but often give hints to the owner or his pastimes.
Your poem, Angela, may not have all the clue words but it was still worthy of your talent. I also appreciate the Cadillac references—loved those old Caddies with the fish-tail fins and the V. My parents never had one but a neighbour did and I cherished every ride I got to take with him and his family.
Off to the beach for a totally self-indulgent day.

    • Good Morning, Earl. You’re very welcome. And thank you for the Shout Out. I didn’t realize it until I was putting it up, and there was no way I was starting over! πŸ˜‰ I love the old cars also. Three of my friends still have vintage Caddies, and I’m happy to just sit in them…Riding in them? Let’s not even say! πŸ˜‰ Hope you enjoy the beach…We’ve had horrible fog and rain since way before daybreak…Starting to improve, but I doubt there’ll be any beach for me today! Fishing maybe! Take care! πŸš™πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Earl…See what I mean? Lack of sleep…way too many oversights so far this morning! Forgot to Kudo you on your sentence. πŸ‘πŸ» Brownstone, huh? Priceless! In more ways than one! πŸ˜‰ Let me know if you’d ever like to swap stories! πŸ˜‰πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Earl, I had to smile at your taking the old fashioned word PARLOR and upping the stakes with the even more archaic DIVAN. Can DOILY or ANTIMACASSAR be far behind? πŸ˜‚πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

      • Thank goodness antimacassar is more than 6 letters. But I believe we have had “doily” as a clue word, haven’t we?
When I saw “parlor” this morning it brought back memories of Edith Wharton’s books set in NYC in the 19th century–full of words like I used, including brownstone and divan. I think “The House of Mirth” was the book I am thinking of but maybe not—also too baked to do any research right now.

    • Car appeared first, followed by rear and choice. My Cavs and Lebron tried but fell a bit short, can I say they’re not out ,at least not quite yet?

      • Hey Chuck…I meant to give you a shout out last night, but I got caught up in a zillion things…For a Cavs fan, that had to be really tough to watch…I cringed, and I’m rooting for Golden State. LeBron? I can’t praise him on his fashion sense, but…51 on the scoreboard? They may have to coin a new word just to describe the man’s prowess out on that court…It’s sad to see it all go to waste…The Cavs? Out? Not by a long shot! This party’s just begun! I still wish you continued Good Luck, Sir! And may the best man win! Enjoy! πŸ€πŸ™‹πŸ»

  3. I also thought, like Harry, that car would probably not be used. I tried putting the c and h together, which led me to choice. With no other ideas, I went with car, and the rest wasn’t hard to find. Another outstanding puzzle!

    • It sure was a wonderful puzzle, Caroline! I honestly don’t remember a week that’s been more challenging. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

  4. Good Grief Charlie Brown!! I had to throw in the towel with yesterday’s cartoon answer. I kept thinking something like terrier (tear ier) and just couldn’t get past it. How I hate looking up the answer. Today’s words were easy, and while the cartoon was challenging I did manage to figure out the answer. Saw car first and then choice so the rest fell into place. Whew !! How about that game last night, Steve. The Warriors managed to prevail but that LeBron James is one terrific player and will definitely a force to be reckoned with. Happy Friday everyone.

    • Hi Betty – Every one I’ve heard agrees that game was an instant classic which doesn’t deserve to be overshadowed by the bonehead or controversial plays at the end. And the Cavs could win *any* of the upcoming games, because the Warriors have absolutely no way to stop King James.

  5. I got meeger instead of emerge. That threw me off. I never saw a jumble where you could get two words from the same letters. Oh well.,,

  6. I had to look here for the puzzle’s answer. With the letters, I almost got “Car-Care Choice”…..ugh!

  7. Hi all – The second word took the longest, and once I wrote down the letters, I saw CAR and the answer was revealed.

Well then. This puzzle really made me smile. Begging your pardon, I will totally indulge myself here, because this presents me with a nearly unbelievable chance to combine Jumble, nostalgia, an Earl-type sentence, music and lyrics.
The Elvis song β€œAll Shook Up” contains the lyric β€œI’m itchin’ like a man on a fuzzy tree.” There’s no way Jeff could have known that I would CATCH the reference to ITCHY in his license-plate song title, causing a memory to EMERGE of my mother and I sitting in our PARLOR listening to that song. She particularly liked that line too, because there was a tree across the street that had unusual round flowers that did look fuzzy.

Like Earl, I also noticed the EMERGEnce of the little tailfin, which went on to achieve comically ridiculous proportions in later years. And I still think the 1956 Ford is the most beautiful car ever produced.

    Have a great day, everyone.

    • Happy Friday, Lelia. I received your other message in reference to your daughter and I hope she’s better in time for her birthday! Have a beautiful Friday. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

  8. Mike, thank you for your comments to me yesterday. You are welcome for my explaining my solve. Thanks for fingers crossed for Jerry to receive good results from his procedure.

Thank you for hoping Diane will recover soon. Starlight, the cat, did not get hurt at all because when Diane took a step backward and felt the cat under her foot, rather than step on the cat she threw herself into the air and took a very bad fall, hitting her hands & arms on various things found in a bathroom and landing on her tail bone and back. Starlight was gone before she landed, but Diane will be well soon.

  9. Good evening. Yesterday I never received the jumble and today I didn’t get it before I went out at 12:00. Since I got stuck on the cartoon answer yesterday I didn’t bother to sneak in the back door to post. Today I again got all the words and since Jumble never appeared I gave up on the cartoon and played bocce. Take care everyone. Until stay well.

    • Hey Brooklyn…How you doin? πŸ˜‰ Two days in a row without your morning sunshine is beginning to take its toll…By t’row I’ll be needing vitamin supplements! Ask your daughter-in-law to perform whatever magic she did last time so that you get yourself back on track. It’s not the same without you here…So, Mets and Yanks both winning…Must be a full moon! Hope you’re enjoying your night! Ciao! βšΎοΈβšΎοΈπŸ™‹πŸ»

  10. Mrs Dorothy is 100 years old and said today’s puzzle was hard .she loves jumble took her a while to solve but by the pix she was soon to the finish.

    • What a wonderful message! God Bless You, Mrs. Dorothy! And I applaud your perseverance in completing today’s puzzle. πŸ‘πŸ» You are a true inspiration! Please visit us again, and I wish you many more years of continued health, happiness and Jumble fun! Be well! πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™‹πŸ»
