CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN THE BASKETBALL PLAYER APPEARED AS A WITNESS, THE JURY HAD – – –

UADCESESTOSRIT = COURT-SIDE SEATS

Happy Wednesday, everyone! All of the clue words this morning were old favorites but that doesn’t mean they were a breeze. GUARD and CEASE were instantly visible leaving me to struggle a bit with STUDIO and SCRIPT. Out of those two, STUDIO took the longest to decipher and is my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day.

The setting for today’s cartoon is a court room where a well dressed gentleman appears to be addressing a jury. Reading the dialogue and sentence we discover that the man in the hot seat is a basketball player and he’s giving his account of a hot-dog cannon mishap that he witnessed. Some of the jurors appear to be entranced by the fact that such a famous athlete is in their presence and they have other thoughts on their minds and seem unable to focus on the case at hand. One juror is adamant that he’ll get his autograph while another is just plain giddy to be in the same room as him.

There were several details in the panel that I particularly enjoyed with my favorite being the court room floor. Doesn’t it remind you of the flooring that you’d see at a professional basketball venue? The long vertical slats were a genius addition by Jumble artist Jeff Knurek and they really made the panel pop. The scales on the desk of the judge were very easy to spot, but did you notice that he’s holding a gavel in his right hand? And last but certainly not least is the chair that the witness is sitting in. It seemed odd that he wasn’t sitting on a witness stand and it’s probably for a good reason. Basketball players are very large and tall people so perhaps Jeff had him sit in a simple chair so he’d be more comfortable.

The solution to the surprise answer was strikingly similar to yesterday’s layout. A 5-letter and 4-letter word separated by a hyphen followed by a 5-letter word. I wasn’t able to blind solve this one but the hypen helped immensely. COURT was the first word to be found with ROOM being the obvious follow up. SEATS came quickly for the finish leaving us with a very satisfying solution. Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. 🎶Listen everybody, especially you girls…Is it right to be left alone while the one you love is never home?…I love too hard, my friends sometimes say. But I believe, I believe…that a woman should be loved that way…But it hurts me so inside, to see her treat me so unkind…Somebody, somewhere…tell her it’s unfair…Can I get a WITNESS? Can I get a WITNESS? Can I get a WITNESS? Somebody…🎶

🏀🌭 So maybe he’s a point GUARD, or at center he might play,
But today he’s in a courtroom, and he wants to have his say.
The arena’s on the carpet, cause some actions need to CEASE
If there’s going to be true safety, and to give the patrons peace.
With a hot dog being fired, and a problem with its aim,
You would think it was a movie scene, but here no one got fame…
Instead a TV STUDIO captured the whole thing right on screen
And now the team’s held liable, that hot dog did careen.
No, it wasn’t in the SCRIPT at all, the jury will find out…
Only thing is they’re all star-struck, the case this one’s not ’bout…
And instead of listening closely, for the info and the “deets”
This jury’s main concern is having real good COURT SIDE SEATS! 🌭🏀

With Basketball Playoffs in full force, a Basketball related Jumble does seem apropos, and our guys have done this one JUSTICE for sure. But looking at today’s words, they all felt so familiar, so I decided to do a little RESEARCH, just in CASE. And sure enough, they’ve all BOUNCED by us before. Script, the most recent was featured on 2/7. The others, repeated a few times, were seen last year. And now that we have that all in ORDER…IN THE COURT we’ll go! Today, we find ourselves in a COURTroom. Perhaps in Philadelphia, (where they have a HOT DOG CANNON)? Perhaps in Kansas City…Perhaps this should be a Baseball player? Back in 2009, the “Hot Dog” became the CENTER of attraction so to speak, in Kansas City, when a fan was hit in the eye, by a hot dog tossed by the team’s mascot, Sluggerrr. Up until 2014-2015, the MLB Kansas City Royals found themselves TIED UP IN COURT. (It’s all out there, on LINE, If you’d care to read up on it). And that’s what immediately came to mind this morning…But, It may not be the CASE here at all…So, I’ll just move FORWARD, and stick to the FACTS. At a Basketball game, the action takes place on a COURT. The best seats are called COURT SIDE. It could be said that they’re called that because you’d need a lawyers income to buy them, but in realty, it’s not the CASE. They’re called that because you’re sitting right on the SIDE of the Basketball COURT. With this in mind, let’s listen in…The Basketball Player, taking the stand, is telling us how he WITNESSed a Hot Dog being launched towards someone. But some of the the jury members seem to be more interested in who he is, instead of what he’s saying. They’re star struck, and seem to be BLOCKING out the KEY facts. From the looks on their faces, you can see them marveling at being in such close proximity to him, in these great “seats”….Our question asks…What did the Jury have…COURT SIDE SEATS! Well, ALLEY-OOP! Good one, David! Ok, eye candy. I like the apPEERance of the Scales of Justice, but it’s not the TIP today. Some of the jurors do seem to be paying attention, and our Jurist, holding his gavel, does seem INTENT, with that DOGged look upon his face, but then, who am I to JUDGE? And it’s interesting that the COURTROOM floor resembles a PLAYING SURFACE. WOOD Jeff have done that INTENTionally? MAPLE so. But I’ve DECIDEd to go with the lawyer, and the incredulous look on her face. Is she shocked by the TESTIMONY? Is she feeling HOSTILE due to the jurors lack of attention? Is she thinking that she’d KILL for a Hot Dog right now? Hmm…DECISIONS…DECISIONS! So, There you have it, Folks! Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember to always TRY to keep things ABOVE BOARD! 🌭🏀 🙋🏻

  2. Morning, all –
Interesting insights as usual, Mike and Angela. I had to jumble STUDIO numerous times ,and I was stuck a while on the answer, first trying case and star before finally finding court.

    • Thanks, Caroline. There sure were a lot of letters in the final answer and it was so cryptic that it didn’t give anything away. I’m glad you were able to sleuth it out for the finish. Enjoy your day! 🙂

    • Good Morning, Caroline. Thank you. Hope you have a great day! 🌭🙋🏻

  3. The writer had to CEASE work on his SCRIPT because the STUDIO GUARD refused him entry to the lot.
Clue words easy today but the solution? Air-ball for at least an hour. Had to leave it, come back and do that twice before COURT came to mind. Then? No problem. Nice challenge for a Wednesday.
Thanks for all the details Mike and Angela and you are both correct when you point out the appropriateness of the cartoon during NBA playoffs. I don’t recognise your song Angela, so will have to Goggle it or wait for your reply. Little time for much else this morning, I’ll check in later for more comments and thoughts or your posts. Ciao.

    • Good Morning, Earl 🎶Can I Get A Witness🎶 Marvin Gaye, 1963. Thank you, and a shout out for your sentence. Talk to you later! 🌭🏀🙋🏻

  4. Good morning. Nice job Mike. Angela and Earl I truly love the long and short version of the use of words. Each unique in their own way. Today’s words were first glance except for studio. It took me a couple of minutes before the answer popped into my head. When it came time to the cartoon it stumped me for quite sometime. I had the middle word as star or stud and couldn’t get passed that for the longest time. I finally decided that seats was the last word and went from there for the answer. It’s amazing how when something gets into your head it takes forever to erase it. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Hi, Paul! This puzzle is giving lots of people trouble and my guess is that it’s the abundance of letters in the final solution. It sounds like I got lucky by seeing court first. I’m interested in seeing if our friend John was able to blind solve it. Enjoy your Wednesday. 🙂

  5. All of the clue words were “nothing but net”; the solve was no slam dunk, however. It took a bit of work before the excellent surprise answer came into view.

    Until tomorrow.

  6. Script was the most difficult word for me to solve this morning and the cartoon answer took sometime as well – so many letters. Once I figured out court, the rest of the words fell into place. It was a good challenge. Happy Wednesday everyone.

  7. Studio was troublesome, but court was a given in the final solution w side seats following quickly.I was originally thinking front row sets, but there was no f.With the basketball theme,a quick word on the demise of Lebron and the Cavs, yikes.

    • Hey Chuck. Demise? And I don’t know about Yikes either…Not yet anyway…Maybe more like..”Are you kiddin’ me”? You’re not dead yet. Boston’s young, and you know when you’re young, you’re really hungry and full of spit and vinegar. The Cavs just didn’t seem to have that edge these last 2 games. Called it in the second half. Tired? Cocky? Who knows. Can’t fault LeBron though, as much as I’m not a fan. 40+? Have to give him his due. He’s carrying all the weight. But…if he starts believing all the hype? Then, Chuck…Yikes!! 😉 I wish you luck, Sir. This can’t be any worse than climbing around that canyon! Have a good one! 🏀🙋🏻

  8. Hi all – I tried ‘SR’ and then ‘SC’ to get SCRIPT, then STUDIO took two extra looks. Took a minute to see it was a COURT, and the answer followed. The flooring reminded me of old hardware stores with nails, creaky sounds and the wonderful smell of old wood.

About the Basketball Jumble (is that like the Blackboard Jungle?), Warriors play tonight and then neither series plays until Saturday? Compared to hockey players playing every other night, what wimps!

Hey Mike – Before I started watching hockey last night, I checked the A’s game at 10:10 PM EDT and what’s the *first* thing I hear? Two California guys complaining about the weather! I had to laugh; I wanted to shout “Just wait a minute!” 😂 And the hockey fans among us watching on NBCSN got to see pictures of lightning strikes around the US Capitol and Washington Monument, followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning striking for goals. Striking, indeed!

Angela, Marvin Gaye’s house is dark and his thoughts are cold. His girlfriend better change her evil ways. 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

    • Hey G..Give me a hint…Santana? I can’t make the connection…🤔 🙋🏻

      • Yes, I was going for Santana’s “Evil Ways” sounding like what Marvin Gaye was saying.
I was trying to work in taking her keys and leaving her “Car-less”, but it didn’t really fit. 🙄

        • LOL…CAR LESS Santana? Yea, I could see that working! 😂 But he worships her in the song, he’d never take those car keys! 😂 🙋🏻

          • Have you ever heard Martin Mull’s rendition of a song by his suburban blues man character “Blind Lemon Pledge”?
🎵”Woke up this mornin’, and I saw both cars were gone
Woke up this mornin’, and I saw both cars were gone.
I threw my drink, I threw my drink,
I threw my drink across the room!”🎵 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

            • 😂 Yes, AKA.., the “White Man’s Blues”! ..But I think he threw his drink “across the lawn”..
That beautifully manicured suburban lawn!!! 😂😂🙋🏻

              • Yes, you’re right! 😉 Somehow!! I had this conversation with a friend just today..About playing 18 holes and being out there…especially if your imbibing!! 😂 I guess that’s why there’s trees! 😂 And I haven’t thought about 🎶Pleasant Valley Sunday🎶 In a month of Sunday’s! Now it’s been playing in my head! 🙋🏻

              • Sorry about the earworm, but that is such a good song, ahead of its time.
“The kids just don’t understand”, just like Mother’s Little Helper.
Went out, took a nap, now watching Vegas in real time.
Saw a 45 single of “Tammy” by Debbie Reynolds at the thrift Store! 🙋🏻‍♂️

              • Hey, G. No problem. Not your fault. You know it doesn’t take much to turn my switch on…😂 And yes, it was before its time, as was a lot of the music back then, don’t you think? You, watching real time? I’m stunned’ 😉! ..And you didn’t buy it? I would have even just for the camp value! Good luck with the game…🏒🙋🏻

              • Winnipeg coach:
🎵”Some people call me the space cowboy yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me (Paul) Maurice…”🎵

Well, I bet they don’t actually call him the gangster of love, but I guess you never can tell…😂😂🙋🏻‍♂️

              • 🎵”The Hissing of Summer Lawns”🎵 on a 🎵”Pleasant Valley Sunday”🎵

  9. DONE! This was my most difficult Wednesday puzzle ever, just because of the easy word SEATS. I thought of COURT-SIDE right away, but the last 5 letters spelled “asset,” which does not grammatically fit the sentence, but I couldn’t see “seats” for some unknown reason and kept wasting my time with “court-side asset.” Silly me.

Gracious, I just finished 5 days of partying! Talk about being spoiled rotten. I have managed to put my first load of laundry in and am deciding which mundane, household task to do next. I deserve no pity after all that fun I’ve had with my adorable family including wonderful visiting time together, meals, flowers & cards on Mothers Day, and an abundance of hugs, kisses, and people saying “I love you.”

I got to share some of that love late Sunday when I remembered that I was out of cough medicine and scurried to Fry’s pharmacy for a refill., which I had been dreading doing because last time my usual pharmacist gave me the brand that makes me sick, in a bottle that was almost expired. I had never seen this pharmacist before, who told me that she had to work that day because she had no mother or children. When she brought me my RX in the brand I prefer that had an acceptable expiration date, I exclaimed loudly to her, “I LOVE YOU.” She smiled & smiled and told me she thought my daughter Joyce, who had driven me there, was beautiful. No matter how much I try to give, I usually get more back!

    • Hi Lelia – Your story made me smile, but I don’t think I’ll try telling my pharmacist that I love him – better just stick to making him laugh!
I also had an exciting day yesterday doing two loads of laundry, whee!
My doctor says my blood work looks good and I don’t have to see him again until November.

      • Hi, Steve! You made me LAUGH thinking of either of us telling a male pharmacist we love him, but I’m glad I said it to one who was feeling a little blue over having to work on Mothers Day because she has no mother or child.

I was going to ask you about your routine physical and tell you I hoped everything turned out normal. You get your blood work results back faster than I get mine. Thanks for sharing and now I can congratulate you on being normal!!

I still have a few of your songs to investigate but first I had to look up two that Josh told me about. He and his dad will play for a wedding this coming Saturday for a girl who is a fan. She chose 2 songs. Josh will sing Stone in Love by Journey and his dad will play a guitar solo as she walks down the aisle; The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin.

      • Hi, Steve! You are so right! You treated me to the wonderful guitar playing in The Rain Song a while back. I thought it sounded familiar, thanks for confirming, and thanks for sharing it in the first place.

        • Glad you liked it again! I’ve got a story about Journey too, but it will have to wait till later.

      • Hi, Mike! Thank you so much for your encouragement because that is what reminds me to take opportunities to reach out to others.
