Happy Monday, Jumble friends! A new week of puzzles is upon us, but let’s first take a quick look at the most difficult anagrams from last week. UGATOE, SLUBEH, and KARYEB were the most searched for clue word solutions while Tuesday’s surprise answer of AECERDRWY took the top prize. Were you able to see the answers immediately the second time around? There’s no doubt that we’ll see those anagrams in the future so I hope you all scored well on the pop quiz!

Today’s puzzle had some challenging clue words and I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them made it to the final spot next week. SINGE took me the longest to decipher and hasn’t been used in a puzzle since November of last year. Rarely do I get stumped on one of the 5-letter words so it was an interesting way to start the week. RUGBY was the runner-up but the “Y” trick proved successful once again. PLEDGE and LONGER came instantly into view allowing me to give my full attention to the cartoon.

With the final solution being only 6-letters in length, I thought for sure that I’d be able to pull off a blind solve but it just didn’t happen. Looking at today’s panel we see two squirrels that have just finished or are close to finishing off a bag of peanuts. The dialogue between the bushy tailed rodents tells us that they’ve stuffed themselves with peanutty goodness and are too full to move.

Having been to the Grand Canyon many years ago, I do remember that squirrels were everywhere. Doing a bit of research I discovered that the Grand Canyon has two distinct types of squirrels which are the “Albert” squirrel and the “Kaibab” squirrel. The Albert squirrels live at the South Rim and the Kaibab make their home in the North. The Grand Canyon formed a natural geographic barrier causing the species to separate into 2 different groups.

The cartoon had two interesting details that I’d like to share. If you look closely at the bag of peanuts, you just might notice a drawing on the label on the bag. It’s very small but it’s an elephant standing on a circus stool while balancing a ball on its trunk. The second detail that caught my eye involved the group of people taking in the scenery on the canyon ledge. The shadowy figure on the far right appears to be getting a little too close to the edge so the person next to him is reaching out to grab him!

The final solve came quickly after reading the cartoon sentence making for an entertaining finish. The letter layout was only 6-letters in length so if you weren’t able to come up with the answer from the visual clues, a quick shuffle of the letters would do the trick.     I’ve opened up a bag or two myself and went at it…
    And like a game of RUGBY, where your hands come into play,
    You shell and shell and shell again…the hours pass away.
    You PLEDGE to stop the eating, you can’t do this much LONGER
    Yet there you go still chewing, and you wish the will power stronger…
    But later when the peanuts hit…its like a fires’ SINGE
    Your stomach aches, you pigged out bad, and now you start to cringe…
    Though peanuts are a healthy snack, this overeating forged?
    Like squirrels here, you find yourself immobile ’cause you GORGED! 🐿

    While none of today’s words made me SQUIRELLY and Jeff’s cartoon made our answer an easy NUT TO CRACK, what did cause me to become a Curious GORGE was the familiarity of them. PLEDGE just kept LEAPING out at me. Had we seen it recently? And not that LONGer ago? They both just seemed to ECHO and ECHO…Regardless, I STREAMed over to our cartoon…Finding ourselves at the GRAND CANYON today, I think it WOOD be BENDificial to take a GOOD LOOK at the OVERall picture first, before we take a BITE out of it. We see the CANYON in the background, complete with the NARROW VALLEY and the STREAM, i.e. the GORGE. Jeff gives us two SQUIRRELS, brothers, ROCKY (left), and WALLace (right), RAVINE, who have GONE OVERboard with a bag of PEANUTS. They really went to SHELL with themselves, didn’t they? We see them with their stomachs enGORGED, discussing how the OVEReating has resulted in their now being unable to get back DOWN the CANYON. The RAVINES are in DEEP trouble this time, Folks! And our question asks…What did ROCKY and WALLace do? They GORGED! VALLEY HO! Good one, David! TOP notch! Ok, eye candy. Jeff’s DRAWing has really DRAWn a crowd today…In the backGROUND, we see nine silhouetted figures, sporting various headgear, admiring the beauty of the GRAND CANYON. And isn’t it absolutely GORGEous? The character farthest left appears to be taking a photo with her cell phone. Eye catching. The one farthest right is SCENE bent, peering OVER. A little too EDGY for me.The middle character, whom I first thought might be drinking from a WATER bottle, on closer scruNUTTY appears to be photographing posing figures 6, 7 and 8. GRAND details, Jeff. And then, of COURSE, we see the MOUNTAINS, which do PEAK my interest. TURNing back, to the SCENE of the SUBLIME, there’s WALLace still holding a PEANUT in his right hand, which CRACKED me UP. And SCENE spilt on the GROUND in front of the opened PEANUT bag, are numerous discarded SHELLS. HIGHly messy, but I’ll still take a PASS. Because the HIGH POINT of our cartoon today, Folks? That BAG of PEANUTS… If you look CLOSEly at the OPEN BAG, you’ll see a picture imPOSED onto a darkened sphere. And here’s where we see the whimsy that STREAMS through Jeff’s talent. Even though the picture’s inverted, because the bag is facing towards us, you can actually see an Elephant, teetering on a Bull Tub, while balancing a Ball on his Trunk! No bunk! And if that isn’t a GRAND piece of Artwork…Well then I don’t know what the SHELL is! So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Have a GRAND day, Everyone. CANYON do that? Sure you can! 🐿 🙋🏻

  5. Good morning. Great post Mike. Thank you for the interesting facts about the squirrels and the details in the picture. Angela,another golden hit and like Earl great use of the words. One would say that your puntastic. Agree with Mike that singe was the hardest of the four words. It was the only word that took a second look to get. The cartoon answer was no problem once I looked at the letters I put down. I might say it was a Tad harder than our usual Monday jumble. “Just a wee bit “. Until tomorrow stay well.

Singe was a challenge as was rugby ,which I was trying to make into grubby.The solution,gorged,came into view before singe.A brief historical note,a college friend of mine and I stopped off at the Gr Canyon after several late nights at Vegas.We decided to trek down from the S rim at 4:30 in the afternoon.After hiking 3 1/2 hrs ,we decided to try to climb back out as darkness descended.We literally crawled out at the S rim top at 2:30 in the morning.Not a good idea,but we did survive.Neither one of us were outdoor hiking types.

  8. Hi all – These seemed like harder-than-normal Monday words, but only LONGER took a little extra time. The answer was pretty evident.

    It should be very easy to make it to the bottom of the canyon; it’s just the sudden stop at the end that’s the problem.

  9. DONE! Living in the Grand Canyon state, I felt obligated to solve the cartoon first, so I immediately began searching my brain for a synonym for “canyon,” thinking of “gorge” rather fast, thus having the answer GORGED! The last word LONGER took me the longest to solve.
    Now I’m taking my honey, honey to the doctor because his ribs keep hurting.
