Good Saturday morning, Jumble friends! There’s no better way to start the weekend than with the Jumble puzzle. During the week I’m usually in a rush to put up the post before having to focus my attention on something else — but knot today! I took my time with the solve and what a gem of a puzzle it turned out to be.
I don’t recall the last time that I’ve been stumped by the first three clue words so I was both shocked and surprised. OUTWIT was the only word that was immediately visible so I decided to start my solve in reverse. Remembering the “Y” trick allowed me to find BAKERY after a few moments of just staring at the leftover letters. If you’re a first time visitor to this website, please allow me to explain what the “Y” trick is all about. If you find yourself stumped on an anagram that contains a “Y”, chances are it will be the last letter of the word. By placing it at the end of your layout you eliminate a letter which often times is all it takes for the solution to come into view. Next up was BISON and it ended up taking the longest to figure out so it’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. The “Y” trick didn’t work on YOUTH so a few self-jumbles got the job done. With the quartet of clue words complete, it was time for the cartoon.
Today’s panel takes place just outside of a home on a walkway. We see a man attempting to comfort a young girl that is seated on the ground and crying. Reading the dialogue and sentence we discover that the reason for her tears is that her brother tied her shoelaces together and she can’t untie them herself. Dad is furious at his son and instructs him to go inside and reflect upon his actions.
Just look at how sweet and innocent that little girl looks. From the cute flower on her shirt to that tiny tear upon her cheek, Jeff did a wonderful job stirring our emotions and getting us to feel sorry for her. And look at the way he chose to draw her brother. He looks mischievous in that dark colored Punisher t-shirt and hair that partially covers his eyes. Dad is surely going to have his hands full with this sibling rivalry for many years to come.
The letter layout kept the final solution well hidden, but BOY came into view with the letters being so close together. A few mental swirls of the remaining letters brought KNOTTY into view giving us a very satisfying finish. Have a spectacular Saturday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

To OUTWIT younger siblings, some kids really take the cake,
And I don’t mean the BAKERY kind, no not a cake you bake.
I’m talking ’bout those little ones who drive you up a wall…
The YOUTH who gives you more trouble than any of them all.
!’ll tell you all a story…just to show you what I mean,
Growing up with only brothers and with me the in between.
We had a lot of books to read, with animals and such…
I really loved the story books…my brothers not so much.
One book showed pics of Buffaloes, a BISON and a Yak
It was one of my favorites, I kept it in my pack.
My brother didn’t like them, thought them ugly, big and brown,
So he cut off all their heads, replacing with those of a clown.
And he knew that clowns had scared me, so that made it even worse…
And my Father had to talk to him…to reason and coerce.
So like our girl we see here, how I know her lack of joy…
I’ve walked in those same shoes of hers…I knew that “KNOTTY” BOY! 👫
None of today’s words OUTWITted or TIED me up, with them all being old favorites…So I just went right to our cartoon. And this definitely brought back memories. Today Jeff’s giving us a bit of Sibling Rivalry. We see a little girl, sitting on the ground crying because her brother has TIED her laces together. And as the Father’s chastising him, I’m thinking… Growing up with older brothers, and looking back now, two phrases come to mind. Especially thinking of one brother in particular…”It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness”…(Dickens). And he was as fresh as the DICKENS! And this…”These are the times that try men’s souls”. (Paine). And oh, was he such a PAIN! So, like our girl in today’s cartoon, I’ve been there, done that! Or should I say…Had that done to me! And I was usually fit to be TIED! But then I learned to STAND UP for myself, and to TIE my own SHOES…And my Father bought me boxing gloves…No more tears! And end of story! So, KNOT to prolong this even further, and TIE Up more of your time…What was our brother being? A “KNOTTY” BOY! Good one, David! You’re LACES! So, eye candy…Girl crying…Boy lying…Dad buying…himself a drink when this is over! I’m going with the three tulips and what appears to be a tiny Garden Gnome in the background. Sums up my childhood…Three tulips…and a gnoME! Have a great day, Everyone! And since we’re reminiscing…”No More Tears”? Who remembers? 👫🙋🏻
At the BAKERY, the YOUTH tried to OUTWIT his father so he could leave and see the BISON at the zoo.
I had no problems with any of the clue words but had some trepidation when I spied the quotation marks around the first word in the solution. But once I wrote the circled letters out, BOY came to view and the K gave me the lead into KNOTTY. Clever pun and an interesting cartoon for Saturday.
As usual I appreciate your attention to details Mike—I’m learning to look more closely but you always bring something new to my observations.

Your poem was certainly family oriented today. I have two brothers but one was many years younger, so I grew up with an older brother as my tormentor, teacher, and tedious teaser. So I can certainly identify with your predicament growing up. Thanks for the memories as BH always sang.

Good morning on this gloomy day. Thank you Mike,Angela and Earl on all your input. The valuable hints,choice of song,use of words in the sentence. My choice of calling you guys the three amigos fits. Each one complements the other. Today’s puzzle was fun. The only word that came instantly was outwit. The other three words took a second look with youth taking a minute longer. Once I wrote the letters down for the cartoon,the answer came right away. Still had it done in under ten minutes. All these tricks have made it easier to finish jumble. Until tomorrow stay well.

Hey Caroline – I think you’re right about the Jujube statement, especially since there’s no reference link given for it, and when I looked up the only other reference link in the article, it said “account suspended.” 😂 I of all people should know better than to believe what I see on the internet, even Wikipedia. I probably still would have used the joke, though! 😂 Strangely enough, I’ve never had those. We just liked other stuff like Nonpareils and Bonomos Turkish Taffy, which could probably also pull teeth out. 🙋🏻♂️

I know there’s false and biased stuff on the internet, including on Wikipedia, especially regarding political people or issues. But for a lot of things, like candy, I thought Wikipedia was pretty reliable.
Surprisingly, I had a blind solve on this puzzle, but YOUTH and BAKERY gave me fits! I actually had to back into BAKERY!!

There’s a real business in the town north of here named “Yreka” with a palindromic name – the YREKA BAKERY.

Now you cannot make this stuff up – I had the Beatles’ cover song “Bad Boy” in my head yesterday and this morning to the point that I looked it up online; then I turn to the Jumble and see this. Amazing. Your stories make me appreciative all over again that my six-year-older brother was never mean to me and spent many hours together building plastic models and playing with our trains.

DONE! I’m supposed to be getting ready to go to a very fun family party at a resort/spa place where our grandson & wife are staying for a few days; newly opened with 27 buildings, huge swimming pools, exciting water slides, and much more, BUT I just have to comment about the cartoon.
I was an older sibling with one sister who only had to raise her little high pitched voice to yell for grandma and grandma would come rushing, look at me, and ask, “What have you done?” so I am on the boy’s side thinking that his prank was funny, not dangerous, and clever, “What? She asked me to tie her shoes so I tied them……………(said very quietly) together.” Because I got falsely accused so often, I sometimes, on purpose, did the one thing that made her the angriest and that was to call her “Nut Head.”
May as well comment on my solve which was instant for 3 words and only one second look at “barkey” I mean BAKERY. First I made up an answer for the cartoon that made sense to me, “Normal Kid” or “Normal Boy” but knowing it would be a pun, quickly came up with KNOTTY BOY, a fun answer and excellent pun.
I’ll bet you that if an older boy tried to pick on his little sister, that boy in the cartoon would protect her with his life. That’s the way I was with my sister.
Hi, Mike! I have had it in my head that if another Jumble event ever happened in Chicago, I was going to go no matter what, but you know that family comes first.
Soon after we were told the date of May 19, our daughter Joyce called to say that Josh has a gig out of town on the weekend of May 19 to be the wedding singer at a prestigious wedding and the bride has given Joyce permission to attend, therefore they want Jerry & me to go to their house to feed their dogs.
Before I asked her to get a dog sitter, I checked with the granddaughter who just moved to Chicago. When I have taken a copy of the Jumble to a family get-together, she has always been my most enthusiastic participant in solving it, but she is booked for that whole weekend with appointments to sell life insurance. She is helping start a new company in Chicago. She and I are both disappointed that we can’t attend the Jumble event together. Maybe next time.

The Symposium is taking place while my wife will be away on business in NYC so I won’t be able to attend. I was hoping that this year would be the one where I would finally make it but it’s just not possible. We did book a cruise to Aruba in late June so I’m really looking forward to that. 🙂
I’ll try and make it next year (if there is one) but it does require travel which is the difficult part. If only it was closer!

Hi, Mike! Thank you so much for your lovely comments to me. Yes, my family did spoil me rotten with cards, flowers, and a delicious brunch/lunch. Ten of us showed up with 5 of us being mothers so hugs and kisses were flying. Today, Monday, Jerry took me to the restaurant of my choice, The Old Spaghetti Factory, which has been there for almost 50 years with antique décor. I know that you and your son made the mother in your home very happy & feeling well loved.
Aruba! Aruba! So you are going to One Happy Island where you’ll get your Calypso on with music, singing, and dancing! What fun! We always said that after we went to Hawaii, we would visit the Caribbean next, but we loved Hawaii so much that we went back twice and never made it to the Caribbean or Alaska. We’ve talked about going to Hawaii for years now and I’m always excited to hear other people’s experiences while traveling there.
