CARTOON ANSWER:

HER OLD 10-SPEED WAS WAY BEYOND REPAIR AND WAS AT THE END OF IT’S – – –

LELYFIECC = LIFE CYCLE

Happy Thursday, Jumble players! Today’s clue words were no trouble at all and they reminded me of a Monday morning solve. The only word that needed a second glance was PLUME because at first I thought it might be PUMEL but it didn’t have two M’s. It’s my choice for the most difficult anagram of the day and it was time to switch gears and focus my attention on the cartoon.

Back on Monday we saw a cartoon that featured the Wright brothers and I spoke about how they opened a bicycle rental and repair shop in 1893. In today’s panel we see a more modern bicycle shop where a woman and an employee are having a conversation. By reading the dialogue and sentence we learn that the woman has brought her 10-speed in for repair but the news isn’t what she was hoping to hear. With a confused look on his face, the employee asks the customer what century her beloved bicycle is from. The fact that Jeff chose century instead of decade in the dialogue was a key clue for me while attempting the final solve.

The cartoon had some interesting details hidden within so hopefully you weren’t two tired to spot them. The bicycle was definitely the focus of the cartoon with the broken shifter knobs dangling down from the intricately wrapped handle bars. If you look closely at the seat, you’ll probably be able to see that it has a height adjustment mechanism underneath it! Did you notice the new mountain bike in the background? Just above the front tire would have been a great spot for one of Jeff’s signature “J’s” but today it’s just a squiggly little line. And then I saw the shop name on the wall. Bicycle was spelled BICYLCLE and it appears to be a spelling mistake. It was very obvious to me so I thought that Jeff might have included it for some other reason. I had a thought that it was another anagram so I tried my best to make words out of it with no luck. If you have any thoughts on it, please leave a comment below.

The final solve was no trouble at all with CYCLE jumping right out at me. LIFE was quickly deciphered for the finish and another puzzle was solved. Have a terrific Thursday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. 🎶 BICYCLE, BICYCLE, BICYCLE…I want to RIDE my BICYCLE, BICYCLE, BICYCLE…I want to RIDE my BICYCLE…I want to RIDE my BIKE…I want to RIDE my BICYCLE…I want to RIDE it where I like…🎶

🚴🏻 You know how sometimes in your head you’ll hear this little voice?
And phrases may come into mind…you really have no choice?
When something that’s material inevitably ends its stay…
I always hear my Grandmother’s words as she would sweetly say…
Words meant to comfort, dry my tears…as Grandmothers often do,
And she would hug me and then say…”It’s better that than you”.
So I couldn’t help but think this when this cartoon I did find…
And the peacock PLUME of love I carry for her came to mind.
And I FIGURE it applies here ’cause this bike’s seen better days,
If you TALLY up the money spent, she’s better off this way.
And she’s ready now to give ACCORD…”Ok, just trash it, Michael…
I hate to say “Goodbye” but yes, it’s ended its LIFE CYCLE”! 🚴

Looking at todays words, they SPOKE to me immediately. Easy, breezy, all old favorites. I was PUMPED. But then our cartoon kind of THREW me OFF BALANCE. Today, Jeff brings us to a BICYCLE repair shop. That’s BICYCLE…B I C Y C L E. And if you’re thinking…What the “L”? Hey, we’ve all been there. And WHEEL be there again..So, I’m not RIDING you Jeff. I’m just callin’ ’em as I see ’em. I can only imagine what a vicious CYCLE it must be doing this day after day…and what a hard BALANCE it is…So, putting the PEDAL to the “METTEL”…our cartoon. We see our girl, WINona RYDER, finally admitting that her BIKE has reached a PATHetic state. And she’s telling Michael, the shops’ SPOKESperson, that yes, she’s GEARed up for that final SPIN. Let’s face it, Folks, the time has come…But I think she’ll be ok. And there’s always a CYCLE-logist should she need help GETTING OVER THAT HILL. Sure, it hurts, but she’ll do her best to RIDE it out..Oh no, wait..she won’t RIDE it out… Because this BIKE is…at the end of its LIFE CYCLE! Good one, David! WHEELIE good one! We can always tRUST you to ROLL OUT a winner! Ok. Eye candy. I like the details on WINona’s BIKE…The GEARS, the PATCHES on the WHEELS, the BRAKES, the SEATS adjustment valve, the worn out PEDALS. I like all the extra WHEELS and TIRES…And I like the look on Michael’s face…like he just can’t get a GRIP on how old the BIKE is. Hmm…I just don’t know today…The SUSPENSION is getting to me, and I just can’t decide…Maybe I’m just too TIRED…Or maybe I just need a SIGN…
So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And always remember…It’s important to keep our world ROLLING along….Let’s all reduce, reuse and…reCYCLE! 🚴🙋🏻

  2. Good morning. Thanks Mike for all the information. We miss so much when you have to use a magnifying glass to try and see all the hidden treasures. Most of the time I forget to really look at the drawing. Angela, you shocked me deeply. I darn near fell out of my chair. You said the words spoke to you. Are you saying your Easy and Old.??Even in today’s modern times one does not wish to be known as easy!! Just to let you know I’m having fun at your leisure. Great job as always. Today’s puzzle again seemed like it was a Monday. No problem with the words or cartoon. After writing down the letters the answer appeared right away. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good morning, Paul! I hope you had a chance to go back and soak up some of those details after speeding through the puzzle. The last couple of days have been a breeze so we’re due for a stumper real soon. All my best for a wonderful Thursday! 🙂

    • ROTFL!!!! Brooklyn, Move over, ’cause I’ll meet you on the floor! I’m off the chair too! You’re killing me here! Yea, they spoke to me, but what language did you have in mind? 😉 And I am easy, breezy. But not EAZY sleaZy!! 😉 I’m easy going…And as for the old? I’m old enough to know when someone’s pulling my leg! You, Paul are an absolute ❤️ gem! Thanks for the shout out, but thanks more for the laughs! SPOKEn like a true Brooklynite! Have a good one, Bud! 🚴🏻🙋🏻

      • Thanks for the fantastic come back. You had me laughing. It’s the best medicine of all.

        • It’s not really a comeback, Brooklyn…More like a come with! You got me started! You’re always making me laugh! And yep, best medicine of all! You’re an Ace, Paul! ❤️🙋🏻

  3. Her chapeaux with the ostrich PLUME was in ACCORD with the fashion sense of some but a TALLY of frowns showed that it was time to FIGURE out a new look.
I also had no problems with the clue words or the solution—CYCLE was obvious from the dialogue and caption LIFE CYCLE made perfect sense.
I am loathe to admit this but my mountain bike is nearly as ancient and decrepit as Winona;s (Clever nomenclature, Angela) and will shortly be replaced. I’m waiting for my niece’s partner to assemble the new one and bring it to me. I’ll miss the old red one but repairing all the faults would cost more than the bike is worth. So the cartoon hit home with me.
Mike—thanks for your post and drawing my attention to the spelling error—missed that. I also appreciate your “century not decade” point—very clever.
Angela–your poem is redolent (in a good way) of thoughts from your childhood .It brought back memories of my first two bikes—I had to ride cross-bar on my brother’s bike to get to school until I was old enough to have my own two-wheeler. And then an English bike with skinny wheels and gears to ease going up hills!! What fun.
I’ve already praised your naming the woman in the cartoon but your pun with psychologist struck me as especially brilliant and fit in perfectly with my feelings about my old ride.
    Have a thumping Thursday, everyone.

    • Not sure why my name is not appearing again today, but the post above is from EARL

    • What a superb sentence, Earl! TALLY of frowns was my favorite part. Even though your name shows up as “Someone” I knew by your writing that it was you. Enjoy your day! 🙂

    • Good Morning, Earl. 🎶Where do I begin….🎶 First off..(First off? SPOKEn like a true Brooklynite)? …your sentence is what’s brilliant! It’s putting me in mind of all the fascinator hats we’ll be seeing next week at the Royal wedding! Some of them take your breath away…some of them take your breath away because you’re choking at the absurdity! I can’t wait to be privy to it all! (How’s that for a bit of Brit speak)? 😉 Secondly, once again, I can’t thank you enough for your kind words. And I’ll make you laugh. One of my “Core Four” friends reads these comments “once in a while”. (Or so he says). The other night, at one of our “Luigi Board” sessions, we were doing royalty. I made a quip about an Earl, and he said…”Apropos, because you got a new Prince”! (Note the use of the word “got”)! I do think he’s jealous! 😂 But I digress. I only went with Ms RYDER because I named Michael. And I only went with that because I was hard pressed to rhyme Cycle. (But I did give myself a chuckle at the RYDER)! 😉 The thought of the poem truly came to mind immediately when I read the cartoon. My cousins and I to this day repeat the phrase whenever something breaks or stops working. Childhood memories are worth their weight in gold, don’t you think? It keeps the light of our pasts alive in all of us. I really enjoyed your “Wheels Tales”, and I’m glad I was able to evoke a fond memory for you. As for the psychologist pun? It struck ACCORD with me too! When my very first cherished “two wheeler” got scratched because my cousin rode it into a brick wall, I cried like a baby…Then Grandma said…”Better the bike got scratched than —“. …Humph! Not so much this time…I still cried! 😉 Thanks again for your shout outs, and I wish you the bestest day, as my Littles would say! 🚴🙋🏻
PS: And who could deny knowing that write up was yours? 🙋🏻

    • Great job on the sentence with the words Anonymous. You could give Earl a run for the money. It’s amazing, almost like one and the same person.

  4. I’m with Caroline. I figured out “figure” only after solving the cartoon answer. I can’t decipher the sign on the window. It’s too small in my paper and even the magnifying glass didn’t help much. Happy Thursday everyone.

    • Neither could I Betty. Thank the stars we have Mike to tell us all about them.

  5. Hi all – I thought PLUM before PLUME, and I happened to be thinking about TALLY stick – humankinds’ first evidence of mathematics – regular lines scratched into an animal bone. The two ‘C’s went together for ACCORD, and this was the first time Mike’s trick of reading the letters backwards worked for me, enabling me to FIGURE out the third word faster than I would have otherwise. Thanks, Mike!

I thought that surely Angela or Earl would beat me to this, but I guess it’s up to me to surmise that Winona will commission a BESPOKE replacement bicycle from Michael.

Time to haul out this oldie again, Angela –
🎵”I rode my bicycle past your window last night…
I ride my bike, I roller skate, don’t drive no car”🎵

Hey, remember when some of us were talking about words containing but not beginning with ‘J’? (You don’t? You mean you don’t memorize our every pearl of wisdom here? I’m shocked, SHOCKED! I tell you! 😂) Anyway, I came across this random entry on the Jumble Twitter feed:
“You know you’ve been #MarriedForever when you go to bed, turn out the lights, and then have a competition to name words with a “j” in the middle. Curse you #Jumble.”

    Have a great day.

    • Hi Steve,
Funny comment from the twitter feed. Sure, I remember discussing the middle J words. A lot of clue words have repeated since then but still no Banjo.

      • Hi Caroline – Well, I’m glad SOMEONE is paying attention! 😂😂
I had forgotten “banjo”, so I guess I’m guilty too, which doesn’t surprise me at all. 🙋🏻‍♂️

          • Oh, lovely!
“This candy is known to rip out teeth and is used as a dental surgical tool in some countries.”
*Just* what I’m looking for in a box of cqndy at the movie snack bar — like maybe if I was going to see “Marathon Man”?
😂😂😂 Best laugh I’ve had all week. 🙋🏻‍♂️

            • The question was “do you remember them”…not “do you remember what they do”…😂😂
MM scared me for months….If I remember correctly though, it was the Junior Mints…!!! 😁🙋🏻

              • Awhile back, I was talking with my ear doctor about old-time medicines like quinine and gentian blue, but I must admit it would never have occurred to me to ask my dentist about the surgical uses of Jujubes! 😂😂
I actually never did see Marathon Man, but my friends told me about the scenes that were hard to watch.

See you tomorrow – pleasant dreams! 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

              • I don’t think anyone chewed them. If I remember correctly they were very small. You let them melt, probably more of a chance of choking on them then losing teeth…M M was a great movie. Never too late to catch it. Goodnight, Gracie. See ya on the flip…🙋🏻

      • Steve,Angela – I’m not sure if that line Steve mentioned about the candy is a joke that slipped into Wikipedia or not.

        • Hi Caroline. You know it’s funny. The entire article seems a little tongue in cheek…No pun intended! I just remember that they tasted so good, and I didn’t lose any teeth! But I do remember my Mother telling us not to give any to my little brother, because he could choke. Strange what we remember, right? Hope you’re having a good night! 🙋🏻

    • Hey Steve. LOL…I think BESPOKE, I AUTOMATICALLY think DOORS! Maybe I should have been a little more OPEN minded about it though, huh? 😉 ..🎶Don’t go so fast, but I go pretty far…For somebody who don’t drive, I’ve been all around the world…Some people say I’ve done alright for a girl…🎶 And I thought Melanie knew me! 😉 Got you looking at the Jumble Twitter now, huh? That guy posts a lot of cute tweets. And did you catch his name? He must make some beautiful music! 😉 Have a good one, G! 🚴🏻🙋🏻…Bejesus! Not again…! 🙄

      • I just checked it out when you mentioned that David had posted a preview picture. Actually, I went to “David Hoyt” on Twitter before I found the actual Jumble feed. I don’t have an account but just read from a regular browser. Didn’t catch his name; I’ll look. 🙋🏻‍♂️

    • Since you brought this up, Steve, I’ve been trying to think of other words that also have j as the second to last letter. So far I haven’t come up with any.

      • Hi Caroline…I can think of Ninja, Ouija, Dojo and Haji. The last two I know from crossword puzzles…🙋🏻

      • I think we were doing words with ‘j’ anywhere except first and last, but since you brought it up Caroline:
        🎵”I got my MOJO workin!”🎵 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

        • Caroline, I like Juju! Remember Jujubes? Do they still sell Jujubes? I used to love those tiny little things! 😂🙋🏻

  6. Puzzle was no problem except trying to make lytla into lately, rather than tally.

  7. Hi, all! The spinning wheels in my brain gave me a swift solve of LIFE CYCLE and the first 3 words, but I backed into ACCORD.

I remember when we had four 10-speeds; dad, mom, and 2 daughters. The girl in the picture is either Jeff’s beautiful daughter or one of our two. I have a picture of Jeff with a son & daughter in some almost empty bleachers, and all 3 of them had happy, healthy, intelligent faces with wonderful, friendly smiles. Looks like one of our family pictures.

I got my first bicycle for Christmas in third grade. When my uncle visited during the holidays, he said, “O.K., Lelia Ann, let’s see you ride that new bicycle!” When I said that I had not learned yet, he took the bike & me into my grandmother’s huge front yard, held the back of the seat tightly with a big strong hand, and told me to pedal. We had gone the width of that yard only two times when he let go, and I took off on my own.

    • Hi Lelia – It’s appropriate to use your term “Song from the ceiling” at Safeway today because I’ve been meaning for awhile to recommend this to you – the song was “Mushaboom” by Feist – Leslie Feist, who also did “1-2-3-4” – about a woman living in an apartment in the city who dreams, literally and figuratively, of owning a place in the country.

      https://tinyurl.com/Lesfeimusha

      My favorite lines:
“We’ll collect the moments one by one
      I guess that’s how the future’s done
Talk to the neighbors, tip my cap
On a little road barely on the map”

      • Hi, Steve! Thanks for the song/video of Leslie Feist. I flew in my dreams when I was young but rather than wearing a beautiful white dress, I was dressed like Super Woman.
I have never heard of Feist but enjoyed the show and plan to look up all the lyrics of that song and the other one. Boy, that one woman surely wanted to pull her back to earth but that’s hard to do with us dreamers.
The first time I said “song from the ceiling” you said you were going to use that expression, which pleased me very much, but today you called it my expression. I prefer to call it “our expression” to use at will. Thanks.
Thanks again for the video with so many pleasant sights including riding on the horse.

        • I also like her “My Moon, My Man” and “Honey Honey”. The latter, my wife finds way too creepy and scary but I love it. Must be my New England seafaring heritage. It was done with a Canadien puppet group and won a Canadian Juno award for video of the year. View at your own risk.

    • I got my first big bike,a 26″, on Xmas day in Ohio.I took it out for a spin on the next day,in the old icy back alley, crashed, scratching the bright red bike.

      • Chuck…I hear ya. My Father had just given me mine. And he said I should let my cousin take the first ride because she didn’t have a two wheeler. And …Straight into the wall! I’m pretty sure I SCRATCHed her off my favorites list after that! 😉🙋🏻

      • Hi, Chuck! Ooooh! That first scratch on a brand new bike or car is not a happy moment, but I hope you had many happy miles on it after that.

    • By the way Lelia, 7th and deciding game, Winnipeg at Nashville at 5 tonight. Go Canada!

  8. The cartoon featuring Hamilton and Burr was so inappropriate and tasteless. What was you thought doing it. Ed P

  9. Well I cannot wait any longer to wait and see if anybody spotted what I spotted. The artist misspelled a word in the shop name. My guess is he did it on purpose because if spelled correctly it is in the puzzle answer! I feel smug!!!

  10. Forgot to report in this morning: blind solve and straight through the words.

    Until tomorrow.
