TWESP = SWEPT

FAREW = WAFER

SLUBEH = BUSHEL

EECDTT = DETECT

CARTOON ANSWER:

TO SEE WHERE THE BIGGEST WAVES COULD BE RIDDEN, THEY – – –

SWEFERBUHDET = SURFED THE WEB

Happy Wednesday, Jumble fans! The 5-letter clue words were no trouble at all and were both instantly visible. BUSHEL is definitely an old favorite and was last used on 3/23. Don’t feel bad if you thought it was BLUESH because I’ve also made that error in the past. No matter how many times we see it, it always slows my solve by a few seconds so it’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. Do we have a new clue word in DETECT? I remember DEFECT being used a couple of months ago, but DETECT just doesn’t ring any bells. Either way it was also instantly visible and I made my way to the totally tubular cartoon.

By looking at the panel, my guess for the setting would be a surf shop where we see two men working at a computer station. It looks like they’ve traded office attire for beach attire and for good reason. Just look at that breathtaking view that Jeff added to his piece! What a slice of heaven!!!

By reading the dialogue, sentence, and the wording on the computer screen, we discover that these savvy surfers are using the internet to search for the wildest wave in Waikiki. Although it’s difficult to see in the panel, on the bottom of the computer screen is a wave report which indicates the wave height and swell period. I could go into great detail on how to read the numbers, but let’s suffice it to say that this is crucial information when looking for the “big one”!

I had a very difficult time choosing my favorite detail out of all of the wonderful options that were packed into this piece. The lightning bolt on the surfboard was pretty rad as was the tribal tattoo on the seated surfers arm. My inner-geek told me to choose the website that’s displayed on the top of the computer screen which is DaBigWaves.com. If you’re curious if it’s an actual website, I’ll save you the trouble and tell you that I checked it and it’s a dead link. I guess that’s good news if any of my readers are looking to make a career switch to surf reporting!

The final solution was as simple as could be and I actually blind solved it after reading the dialogue and cartoon sentence. The letter layout was wonderfully cryptic and quite a nice challenge if you weren’t able to figure it out by all of the visual clues provided. I wish everyone a “wicked good” Wednesday and I’ll see you tomorrow! 🤙🏻

    • Oh Angela. I just saw yesterday’s message to me. Did a little detective work I see. Pray Tell are you talking about my job as a youth. Getting to make “Head Usher” over others and getting a .5 cent raise to .65 cents an hour. That .5 cents more than the others. The way I got it was a surprise and was a story in itself.

      • Hey Brooklyn. Just leaving St. Charles. I turn my phone off while I’m in here. You’re giving me a smile just when I need it most. I don’t handle coming here very well. Bud, where would I do detective work? You told me about being an usher when we spoke about the old Mayfair Theater. You mentioned a few jobs you’ve held, but that one stayed with me, because I remember what we used to put those poor ushers through when we were kids. Beautiful out here today. Hope you’re having a good one. 🙋🏻

  1. 🎶Let’s go SURFIN’ now…Everybody’s learning how…Come on and safari with me (Come on and safari with me …Come on SURFIN’ baby wait and see (SURFIN’ safari). Yes I’m gonna (SURFIN’) take you SURFIN’ (SURFIN’ safari) with me…Come along (SURFIN’) baby wait and see (SURFIN’ safari)..Yes I’m gonna (SURFIN’) take you SURFIN..(SURFIN’ safari) with me…Come on and safari with me…🎶

    🏄🏻 For those out there who follow them, David gave us a treat,
    Cause y’day we saw this pic when it came as a tweet…
    A preview of a puzzle’s sweet like WAFERs dipped in cream…
    To those of us who find ourselves with Jumbles in our dreams.
    All SWEPT up in excitement, we see these two guys here
    Their bodies tanned and toned and sporting longer hair…
    While sitting at a keyboard, their quest’s to find those waves…
    And DETECT where they’ll travel to…Look at the time they’ll save.
    The biggest waves they covet, 7 feet?…Sure what the heck!
    (I need that line so I can get to fit BUSHEL and peck)…
    So as far as finding happiness, these guys for sure won’t dreb…
    They’ve set their sights on the DaBigWaves, and they’ve just SURFED THE WEB! 🏄🏻

    Today we’ve been given another gift by our Jumble BIG KAHUNAS! Our words, laid back and easy to DETECT, and our cartoon? SWELL, what can I say? A SITE for sore eyes! And I say that because y’day, David gave us a preVIEW of Jeff’s cartoon on Twitter! WAVE to go David! So….WATER you say we get to our solution? We see two SURFERS, in HAWAII, visiting the website, DaBigWaves.com, in an effort to find that PERFECT WAVE. Even though we were just here in HAWAII on April 30th, I’m not BOARD seeing it again, and I think we can RIDE this one OUT easily. Searching the WEB, which is called SURFING, we see our guys checking out different locations. TAN, manning the keyboard, has PULLED UP the North Shore of OAHU, and suggests going to WAIKIKI next. Surfer Dan, is wide eyed while watching a bikini clad woman RIDE a WAVE. Our question asks…What did they do in an effort to find the BIGGEST WAVES? They..SURFED THE WEB! SHORE they did! Good one, David…SMOOTH! Ok, eye candy. We see a HAWAIIAN landscape, complete with mountains, and three PALM trees. Our surfer TAN, sports a soul patch and the requisite tattoo. Dan, has a unibrow, and a SURF BOARD with a lightning rod design. And there is that tiny bikini…But the image to BREAK the BANK? Jeff has printed complete SURF FORECASTS at the bottom of the screen in painstaking detail! His work is amazingly TIDE and true! So, there you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…WHY POUT, when life gets you over a BARREL? Just let things RIDE…and it’ll probably TURN OUT to be simply a DROP IN THE OCEAN! 🏄🏻🙋🏻

    • Angela your slightly correct. As a youth I was an usher. As an adult I did security at two places and payroll drop off. We talked about the Marlboro theater being one of them. I’ll have to visit Saint Charles between now and Mothers Day.

      • Hey Paul. I think we got to the Marlboro from either piggy-backing off my telling of buying our Christmas trees outside the Mayfair, or the conversation where we were trying to pinpoint the location of that catering hall. But wasn’t it you who spoke about doing elevator mechanics too? I’d rather have gone out there Sunday, but no one wants to hear about spending the day sitting in traffic. The Belt was a disaster with all the construction, it took a long time getting back. But we did have a few laughs passing Plumb Beach. I think everybody raised in Brooklyn has Plumb Beach stories! Hope you’re enjoying the night, Brooklyn! 🙋🏻

  2. A DEFECT in the WAFER making machine caused a BUSHEL of sesame seeds to spill out and they had to be SWEPT away, pronto.
    Thanks Mike and Angela for all the details you spotted and reported on in today’s cartoon. I often go back to check out these “gems” that I have missed and my appreciation for the art work that Jeff does is truly enhanced by your comments.
    I had no trouble with the clue words and had a blind solve with the solution–all the hints were there—surf, web, all we had to do was put them together. Clever play on the term Surfing the Web.
    One of my favourite surfing songs—thanks Angela.
    My personal cartoon bit? The tattoo that Mike pointed out—when I enlarged the cartoon, I could see it and it is similar to one I have on my back.
    Have a great hump day everyone. Sunshine, lollipops and roses kind of day.

    • Hi Earl. Good morning. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but your name’s gone missing again. Thanks for the shout out. And it’s one of my favorite songs too. 🙋🏻

    • You’re most welcome, Earl! I hope you enjoyed the museum visit yesterday with your friends. Wonderful sentence as always, my friend. 🤙🏻

  3. Good morning. When they collected a Bushel full of objects recovered after they Swept the sunken ship. They found small Wafer size coins which they Detect came from the early 1700s. Having never tried surfing,your information was interesting Mike. Good choice for the song Angela and good use of the words. Today’s puzzle was a snap all around. Slight tic on Detect. Cartoon was a blind solve what with all the clues to help you. All in all a fun puzzle. Until tomorrow stay well.

  4. Blind solve this morning and no hitches except on BLUESH, err….BUSHEL. (Great minds, Mike!)

    Shout out to James Paxton on his no-no in Toronto. What a script for the Canadian born player to get it on home soil. The Toronto fans were very classy, too.

    • How cool is that John?? Baseball may actually get a mention in the Canadian press before the hockey playoffs end!

  5. How-why-ya today? – Same as everyone else; saw BLUISH before BUSHEL and felt like a SCHLUB.

    You sure that’s not Jan and Dean in the cartoon? They flipped the gender ratio in “Surf City”:
    🎵”You know we’re goin’ to Surf City, ’cause it’s two to one
    You know we’re goin’ to Surf City, gonna have some fun, now
    Two girls for every boy”🎵

    Yes, I did try the website but it HUNG for TEN seconds before it WIPED OUT.
    See you tomorrow!

      • That was just a temporary feature because it always struck me how many important facts happen around the first two weeks of April concerning the Civil War, Titanic, and of course Fenway Park! Couldn’t get funding from my syndicate to continue it! 😂😂 I’ll have to come up with another idea; glad you enjoyed it, though. 🙋🏻‍♂️

    • Hi Earl. You’re welcome. And now it’s back..Sometimes it happens if you post from a different device. Strange things occur with Word Press. I wish I had a more definitive answer for you, but I’m at sea half the time myself. Sorry I failed to mention before how much I enjoyed you sentence. I was just leaving the cemetery and my head wasn’t straight. 🙋🏻

  6. Hi, all! I read the cartoon sentence first and quickly wrote SURFED THE NET, but after solving SWEPT, I knew it had to be SURFED THE WEB. The word WAFER brought to mind the Necco Wafers we discussed. BUSHEL always makes me sing, “I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” The last work to DETECT was easy. DONE!

  7. Hi, Steve! I had no idea when I asked about Marner that your answer could make me weep a few little happy tears. I loved the information you found about assists and points. The happy tears came after reading your description of the look of joy on Marner’s face while skating over to congratulate his mentor, Marleau, for scoring a goal. Since the first time I saw the Leafs on the ice, I have been favorably impressed by how well they play together, how wholesome they look, how majestic they look when wearing their white outfits, and NOT living up to my belief that all hockey players fight a lot on the ice. Thank you very much for all of that. I have 2 more taped Leafs games to watch & erase. See ya’!

  8. Hi, Mike! Your blog today sounded to me like a whole different person talking. Being able to put yourself into different personas is what makes you such an excellent writer. Today you sounded like a very seasoned or professional surfer, not only because of the accurate information but the way you presented it. Wow! Great job!

    Thank you sooo much for telling me that your son enjoyed my bee poems. Hearing about his “giggles of laughter” just made my day and gave me some major smiles!!

    Dear Mike’s son, yes we do have honey bees in Arizona. I know because when I was in High School, the father of my friend Sharon had bee hives at the very back of their huge back yard. While playing volleyball out there with her brothers & friends, I wanted to see the hives up close but we were all forbidden to do that. However, I did get to eat some of their honey and it was delicious.

    Sharon invited me to dinner one Friday night for something light (I don’t remember what) served with pieces of toast and a small container of their honey. After emptying my container, I told them how delicious it was and asked if I could please have more. Sharon’s mom put the honey jar near my container and let me fill it back up, and back up, and back up. The next day, Sharon’s mom visited my mom and told her that I had eaten too much of their honey that is supposed to last them for quite a while, so my mom had to talk to me about it. My mom was not angry, just informative, and I knew that I would remember the delicious taste of that honey for the rest of my life, so it all ended well from my point of view.

    You and your dad are taking such good care of your bees that, with some cooperation from your weather, you should be enjoying some delicious honey, too.

    • Hi, Lelia! I must say that you have very keen eyes. My write up was done super fast yesterday morning because I had an early appointment that I couldn’t miss. I wrote whatever came to mind and only had about 10 minutes to do it. I’m so surprised that you were the only one to pick up on it!

      I really enjoyed your reply to my son. I wasn’t able to share it with him as we had a busy evening with obligations to keep. I’ll definitely have a chance today so I’ll let you know what his reply was.

      Hopefully that cough went away allowing you to get a good nights rest. Talk soon! 🙂🙂🙂
