Good morning Jumble players, and happy Tuesday! I thought we had a new clue word with GUAVA, but a quick search showed that it was used in June of last year. The “U” was the only letter out of place making it instantly visible. With no hesitation on FLUTE, I made my my way to the 6-letter words. FINALE only needed a quick second look before it came into view leaving just one clue word to work through. THOUGH took longer than anticipated and was scrambled very well. The two “H’s” paired together threw me off just enough to make me stare at it for a minute before I could figure it out. It’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day and I was now ready to start the cartoon.
The setting for Jeff’s piece was instantly recognizable as a comedy club. We see two men in the foreground having a discussion as another comedian performs on stage just behind them. Reading the dialogue we discover that the man on the right appears to be the proprietor of the comedy club and he was less than impressed by this comedians “poor-formance”. The comedian involved in the discussion looks vaguely familiar but I was unable to put a name to his likeness. In my opinion, what Jeff was attempting to illustrate was that this comedian relied too heavily on his gag props (arrow through head, rubber chicken, and disguise glasses) rather than coming up with some original material that would dazzle the crowd.
The comedian on stage in the background was left large enough for me to identify as Lissa Sears. She was recently on “The Price is Right” television game show where Jeff designed a Jumble themed tshirt for her to wear! Although I’m not familiar with her act, I found a lot of her material on YouTube to get me up to speed.
The final solution to today’s Jumble had a very cryptic layout. Not being able to blind solve this one, I figured it was best to attempt the 2 & 3-letter words first. TO was my first guess so I crossed it out. This allowed LAUGH to come into view, but the rest of the letters didn’t work. I decided to rewrite the anagram and cross out LAUGH. The two “F’s” brought OFF into view with IT being left for the finish. I really enjoyed this puzzle and it’s entertaining surprise answer was a hoot! Al THOUGH in my opinion, I’d be scared of that said rule.
Some get up there with props like ones we see in our cartoon,
A FLUTE, a rubber chicken…anything to play buffoon.
The audience has their fuel too, like GUAVA rum and lime,
A cocktail that may cause some folks to act not so sublime…
What’s worse comedians wonder…the heckling or the hush?
Stand up and deal with either one can lead to the “bums rush”.
Our guy here didn’t cut it, he flopped and so we see,
That management is telling him that it’s a FINALE.
He pleads his case, but still we see the manager does scoff…
And sadly now our poor guy’s left to try and LAUGH IT OFF. 🎭
Once again, David’s question, RIDDLED with clues, coupled with Jeff’s drawing of a man erupting in LAUGHter, gave me an instant solve. So now to couple the letters with our words. First OFF, I took a bite out of GUAVA. Perhaps they make some people GAG, but I’m JUICED to their taste by now. FLUTE was easy breezy, I CHAMP-AGNED that one right away. FINALE put an END to the “F’s” and THOUGH took no Thought…I guessed it to. “T”. (Oh by the way, before we DEVOUR our cartoon, I found that DEVOUR, no LAUGHING matter for some of us y’day, was last used here on August 26th. I guess the JOKE was on us)! Ok, let me SET the STAGE for our cartoon. Jeff’s brought us to what seems to be his favorite comedy club, ZANIES. I’m going to take a STAND, and say that we’re in Chicago, and that we’re seeing DAN CARLSON, the manager, telling a PERSPIRING comedian that there’s more dead here than his chicken. Dan saying he heard “Crickets” is “no SOUND” advice. It’s more like “Your ARROW’S pointed in the right DIRECTION…follow my THUMB. Your FLOOR show is a DOOR show.” Yep, the comedians’ confidence is really aplBOMB!…What’re going to do? Obviously, this guy needs to IMPROV! Yet you can’t help but feel for him…He looks like he just took a PUNCH…LINE forms to the right, Skippy, you’re not aLOAN. PAY your DUES and keep working at it, that’s all I can say. Anyway, our question asks…After the FLOP, it’ll be tough for our comedian to? LAUGH IT OFF. Good one, David. I’ll give you a round of APPLAUSE. Ok, eye candy. At the mic, I’m
pretty sure we see Jeff’s fellow poker-playing pal LISSA SEARS, who simply goes by the name SEARS. And rightfully so…Because from the look of most of the silhouetted audience reACTion, we can see that she’s HOT. She was recently on “The Price is Right”, wearing a special T-Shirt Jeff made her, and she makes a lot of other appearances. And rest assured, Folks, SEARS STANDS UP with the best of them, despite her MSfortunes! (And Jeff, if it’s not her, then the JOKE’S on me, and I’ll probably take some RIBBON for it, huh? Let me know). But today, I’m going to CONCERTtrate on our comedian, and TRY OUT a new ONE. LINERS for LEAVING…”We find an arrow in his hair, it fell to earth with his despair. The rubber chicken didn’t fly, the smiley face too “days gone by”…That leaves the glasses in his hand, The hairy Groucho Marx’s brand. If only this was all it took, Then maybe twice he’d get to book! Good morning. I’ll read everybody after posting. Anxious to get this out. Even Though the Finale contestants new product looked like a shoe-in for the win,Mikes Flute of Guava infused vodka had him hoping for the best. The words today were fairly easy with just a tic at guava. I came this close👌To an instant read on the cartoon. I had “laugh it up” then realized the last word had three letters. Looking at them gave me the last word. Sorry Mike,these smart pills are running low. The witch that put poor Alice in a deep sleep only made a small batch. I just checked and the name in Resorts Casino is Soup Stand. Guess they can’t use Soup Nazi. When your there,it makes you think it’s from the show. Until tomorrow stay well.
Hi Paul. Good Morning. The one here near me was called The Original Soup Man, with an image that alluded to the Soup Nazi. But that’s how everyone out here referred to it just the same. And Mulligatawny was featured and mentioned constantly so that added to the joke. Far as I know, the original people are all out of business because of the tax evasion issue. I love your sentence! Even THOUGH the FLUTE solo was the hit of the orchesta’s FINALE, it was the spiked GUAVA punch that brought the most merriment.
Had to pause for a blink or two at FINALE but the rest was easy and a blind solve–just wrote the letters out to check my answer.

I love GUAVA and ate pounds of it in West Africa, but trying to put an edible GUAVA in a sentence with FLUTE was beyond my mental capabilities today.

Splendid sentence as always, Earl. I figured someone would use both FLUTE and FINALE in regards to a musical performance. GUAVA was the odd word but you pulled it off wonderfully. Take care and I’m glad I was able to fill in the gap about the puzzle.
Second day in a row without a blind solve. I had TOUGH IT OUT, but the letters told a different story. Clue words were instant, but for FINALE, which took a second look. For some reason the answer was instant once I glanced at all of the letters that I had written down in the order that they came, my customary approach.

I thought GUAVA was a splendid choice for the GU needed in the surprise answer, but it wasn’t jumbled up enough for me. Sometimes I look back and try to replace the clue words with another word that might be more of a challenge. All I could think of was GUILD.

Guava stumped me,but I came up with a blind solve,realized I needed a g and a u so guava came to mind even though I wasn’t familiar with that word,which was new to me.

Hi all – Well, his chicken could eat the crickets. I wish he’d stop choking the poor thing, THOUGH. I had a VAGUE thought for a second, but was surprised that I got GUAVA, since I never eat them and rarely even notice them (even at my Lucky supermarket, where (Angela) the song from the ceiling was “Rock the Boat” which you used recently.)
THOUGH the musician’s instrument broke just before the FINALE, he quickly carved a new FLUTE from a GUAVA and saved the performance.

Well, Earl, you’ve surely made mine. And I’m not lending any credence to your claim of not cheering people up. I’m just chalking it up to the humble man that you appear to be. I didn’t think you’d know of my appreciation of Mozart. Despite all the music talk, I don’t remember us ever mentioning “long haired” music here. I’m not a fan of it all, but for some reason I have an affinity for Mozart. Especially “The Magic Flute” and specifically the overture. Must have had one good music teacher somewhere along the line. Catholic schools never stressed the arts very much. They dabbled, but nothing to write home about. I still don’t know how Guava prompted Flute to you, but I love the imagination behind it! Bravo once more! As to the auto-correct, which word are you referring to? I have trouble with so many of them! And always being in a rush, I’ve caused quite a few problems for myself! 🙄 Hence my referring to it as the auto-INcorrect. The Fruit Festival FINALE, set for the end of the month would work perfectly, because both the FLUTE and percussion sections would be back from hiatus; and even THOUGH they couldn’t guarantee a cornucopia of fruit, at least the GUAVA would be in season.
Hi, all! What a funny cartoon picture! The comedian looked so precious, vulnerable, and naïve standing there holding his rubber chicken in one hand and a little percussion instrument in the other while expressing disbelief in being told that he was not funny. Bless his little pea-picking heart.
I solved the cartoon and words immediately except for saying “vague” before quickly seeing GUAVA. In Hawaii, we ate a lot of mangos & papayas, but I don’t remember eating guavas.
Back to bed with me where I plan to stay for two more days, judging from how long it took daughter & Jerry to get over whatever I now have. I got up just to eat more chicken-noodle soup and do the Jumble. See you tomorrow.

When I mentioned tomato soup as one of my fav comfort foods, I was too sleepy and coughing too hard to say it all. I usually say: One of my fav comfort foods is Campbell’s Tomato Soup served with toast, cheese toast, or a grilled cheese-sandwich. After reading your comments yesterday, I can now add croutons to that list. Yum!

I enjoy garlic and cheese flavored croutons in my tomato soup for added crunch. It makes for a satisfying light lunch and tastes great! Sometimes I’ll add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top if I really want to gild the lily. 😊

Hi Clay. Good guess! And you may be right. But in my paper, and on the on-line site most of us use, his hair, while appearing light, looks brownish. Although he could be a ginger! The only one who would truly know is Jeff, and even though he doesn’t do the coloring of the cartoons, if Carrot Top was his “intended victim”, I’m sure he’d pass that info on to his fellow cartoonist.
