GAVAU = GUAVA

TELUF = FLUTE

NIEAFL = FINALE

GUTHHO = THOUGH

CARTOON ANSWER:

THE STAND-UP COMEDIAN WAS A HUGE FLOP. IT WOULD BE TOUGH FOR HIM TO – – –

GUFLFIATOH = LAUGH IT OFF

Good morning Jumble players, and happy Tuesday! I thought we had a new clue word with GUAVA, but a quick search showed that it was used in June of last year. The “U” was the only letter out of place making it instantly visible. With no hesitation on FLUTE, I made my my way to the 6-letter words. FINALE only needed a quick second look before it came into view leaving just one clue word to work through. THOUGH took longer than anticipated and was scrambled very well. The two “H’s” paired together threw me off just enough to make me stare at it for a minute before I could figure it out. It’s my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day and I was now ready to start the cartoon.

The setting for Jeff’s piece was instantly recognizable as a comedy club. We see two men in the foreground having a discussion as another comedian performs on stage just behind them. Reading the dialogue we discover that the man on the right appears to be the proprietor of the comedy club and he was less than impressed by this comedians “poor-formance”. The comedian involved in the discussion looks vaguely familiar but I was unable to put a name to his likeness. In my opinion, what Jeff was attempting to illustrate was that this comedian relied too heavily on his gag props (arrow through head, rubber chicken, and disguise glasses) rather than coming up with some original material that would dazzle the crowd.

The comedian on stage in the background was left large enough for me to identify as Lissa Sears. She was recently on “The Price is Right” television game show where Jeff designed a Jumble themed tshirt for her to wear! Although I’m not familiar with her act, I found a lot of her material on YouTube to get me up to speed.

The final solution to today’s Jumble had a very cryptic layout. Not being able to blind solve this one, I figured it was best to attempt the 2 & 3-letter words first. TO was my first guess so I crossed it out. This allowed LAUGH to come into view, but the rest of the letters didn’t work. I decided to rewrite the anagram and cross out LAUGH. The two “F’s” brought OFF into view with IT being left for the finish. I really enjoyed this puzzle and it’s entertaining surprise answer was a hoot! Have a terrific Tuesday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. 🎶Don’t mind the rain drops…wait till the rain stops, you’ll find the sun LAUGHING at life. No road is lonely, if you will only smile through your tears…LAUGH at life. Live for tomorrow, be happy today…LAUGH all your sorrows away…Start now and cheer up, the skies will clear up…lose all your blues LAUGHING at life…🎶

Good Morning, Everyone! 🎭 FUNNY HONE? 🎭

🎭 Comedy’s a funny thing, no pun intended there,
To do Stand-Up in front of crowds can cause a wave of fear.
They say a true comedian takes fear to use as fuel,
Al THOUGH in my opinion, I’d be scared of that said rule.
Some get up there with props like ones we see in our cartoon,
A FLUTE, a rubber chicken…anything to play buffoon.
The audience has their fuel too, like GUAVA rum and lime,
A cocktail that may cause some folks to act not so sublime…
What’s worse comedians wonder…the heckling or the hush?
Stand up and deal with either one can lead to the “bums rush”.
Our guy here didn’t cut it, he flopped and so we see,
That management is telling him that it’s a FINALE.
He pleads his case, but still we see the manager does scoff…
And sadly now our poor guy’s left to try and LAUGH IT OFF. 🎭

Once again, David’s question, RIDDLED with clues, coupled with Jeff’s drawing of a man erupting in LAUGHter, gave me an instant solve. So now to couple the letters with our words. First OFF, I took a bite out of GUAVA. Perhaps they make some people GAG, but I’m JUICED to their taste by now. FLUTE was easy breezy, I CHAMP-AGNED that one right away. FINALE put an END to the “F’s” and THOUGH took no Thought…I guessed it to. “T”. (Oh by the way, before we DEVOUR our cartoon, I found that DEVOUR, no LAUGHING matter for some of us y’day, was last used here on August 26th. I guess the JOKE was on us)! Ok, let me SET the STAGE for our cartoon. Jeff’s brought us to what seems to be his favorite comedy club, ZANIES. I’m going to take a STAND, and say that we’re in Chicago, and that we’re seeing DAN CARLSON, the manager, telling a PERSPIRING comedian that there’s more dead here than his chicken. Dan saying he heard “Crickets” is “no SOUND” advice. It’s more like “Your ARROW’S pointed in the right DIRECTION…follow my THUMB. Your FLOOR show is a DOOR show.” Yep, the comedians’ confidence is really aplBOMB!…What’re going to do? Obviously, this guy needs to IMPROV! Yet you can’t help but feel for him…He looks like he just took a PUNCH…LINE forms to the right, Skippy, you’re not aLOAN. PAY your DUES and keep working at it, that’s all I can say. Anyway, our question asks…After the FLOP, it’ll be tough for our comedian to? LAUGH IT OFF. Good one, David. I’ll give you a round of APPLAUSE. Ok, eye candy. At the mic, I’m
pretty sure we see Jeff’s fellow poker-playing pal LISSA SEARS, who simply goes by the name SEARS. And rightfully so…Because from the look of most of the silhouetted audience reACTion, we can see that she’s HOT. She was recently on “The Price is Right”, wearing a special T-Shirt Jeff made her, and she makes a lot of other appearances. And rest assured, Folks, SEARS STANDS UP with the best of them, despite her MSfortunes! (And Jeff, if it’s not her, then the JOKE’S on me, and I’ll probably take some RIBBON for it, huh? Let me know). But today, I’m going to CONCERTtrate on our comedian, and TRY OUT a new ONE. LINERS for LEAVING…”We find an arrow in his hair, it fell to earth with his despair. The rubber chicken didn’t fly, the smiley face too “days gone by”…That leaves the glasses in his hand, The hairy Groucho Marx’s brand. If only this was all it took, Then maybe twice he’d get to book! But all these quirky things, these props?…Poor guy, the act was still a FLOP”! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…Always leave ’em LAUGHING! 🎭🙋🏻

      • I gave you some bad information yesterday Mike, because my radio station ran the spot on the wrong day. It’s tonight that’s the A’s 50th anniversary game. Good news, it’s a little earlier, 10 PM EDT. Bad news, it conflicts with the Red Sox game.

  2. Good morning. I’ll read everybody after posting. Anxious to get this out. Even Though the Finale contestants new product looked like a shoe-in for the win,Mikes Flute of Guava infused vodka had him hoping for the best. The words today were fairly easy with just a tic at guava. I came this close👌To an instant read on the cartoon. I had “laugh it up” then realized the last word had three letters. Looking at them gave me the last word. Sorry Mike, these smart pills are running low. The witch that put poor Alice in a deep sleep only made a small batch. I just checked and the name in Resorts Casino is Soup Stand. Guess they can’t use Soup Nazi. When your there,it makes you think it’s from the show. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Hi Paul. Good Morning. The one here near me was called The Original Soup Man, with an image that alluded to the Soup Nazi. But that’s how everyone out here referred to it just the same. And Mulligatawny was featured and mentioned constantly so that added to the joke. Far as I know, the original people are all out of business because of the tax evasion issue. I love your sentence! I went with an alcoholic guava reference too! Oh, BTW, check y’days page, I left you a reply. Sorry I didn’t get around to it until this morning. Ciao! 🙋🏻

    • That’s a very intoxicating sentence, Paul! I’ll have to check and see if there is such a thing as Guava infused vodka because it sounds like it could be a real product.

It sounds like you zipped right through the puzzle today so a tip of the cap to you. Enjoy the day and thanks for the info about the soup stand. 🙂

  3. Even THOUGH the FLUTE solo was the hit of the orchesta’s FINALE, it was the spiked GUAVA punch that brought the most merriment.
Had to pause for a blink or two at FINALE but the rest was easy and a blind solve–just wrote the letters out to check my answer.
Mike, you do a great job each day and I always learn something–today it was Lissa Sears. New to me.
Angela, a new song to me so I’ll Google it later. Prose and poetry worthy of a blog Pulitzer, if there is such a thing. Thought you might go with “That’s Entertainment” that oldie came to my mind.
Have Tip Top Tuesday everyone.🌞 🌷

    • Good Morning, Earl. Thank you so much. You’re so very kind, and an absolute ❤️ Sweetheart. Good song choice, but I wanted to keep LAUGH in the lyrics. I chose Miss Billie Holliday’s 🎶Laughing at Life🎶 I’m pretty sure it’s on YouTube, everything else seems to be. Yes, try Goggling it, I’m sure you’ll like it. SEARS isn’t new to us, THOUGH, Earl. Jeff introduced us to her with the Jumble of December 5th, and I hope we’ll see more of her. Loving your sentence, I see you also went the alcohol route with GUAVA! Don’t any of us EAT the fruit? 😂 I do! I do! If you get a chance, look back to y’days page. I “vichyssoised” for you…💃🏻👠(it would make a cute dance tune, don’t you think)?…and left a reply to your comment of y’day. Let me know what you think. Sorry it took me until this morning…Thanks again. Have a good one! 🙋🏻

      • I love GUAVA and ate pounds of it in West Africa, but trying to put an edible GUAVA in a sentence with FLUTE was beyond my mental capabilities today.
No e-mail again today and so going back and forth is a bother–I’ll check out your reply later.

        • LOL…So do I, Earl! I eat it all the time! And believe me, I had the exact same thought this morning. But, TBT, I do love the Guava lime cocktail too! 😉 I just got a big chuckle over we 3 all going “down the same hatch” so to speak! Sorry you’re still having a problem with the email. Here…I copied it for you..Enjoy your day, vichyssoiSIR! 😉🙋🏻

“I think you’ve mentioned once before affinity for soup
I share your love for it a lot, so many in the group…
It’s chicken seems to lead the pack when I’m down with the blahs..
But just to make you happy, Earl, I’d make you vichyssoise.
The onions, leeks, potatoes, I’d cook them with the cream
And rest assured you’d love it, a BORSCHT BELT lovers dream…
I’m glad I conjured memories for you through y’day Storms
I owe you that and so much more…for brightening up my morns”!
Thanks for y’days shout out Earl. ❤🙋🏻

    • Splendid sentence as always, Earl. I figured someone would use both FLUTE and FINALE in regards to a musical performance. GUAVA was the odd word but you pulled it off wonderfully. Take care and I’m glad I was able to fill in the gap about the puzzle.

  4. Second day in a row without a blind solve. I had TOUGH IT OUT, but the letters told a different story. Clue words were instant, but for FINALE, which took a second look. For some reason the answer was instant once I glanced at all of the letters that I had written down in the order that they came, my customary approach.

    Until tomorrow.

    • I hope your blind solve drought improves soon, John! The sentence was worded just right to make us have to work a little harder.

I thought GUAVA was a splendid choice for the GU needed in the surprise answer, but it wasn’t jumbled up enough for me. Sometimes I look back and try to replace the clue words with another word that might be more of a challenge. All I could think of was GUILD.

      Enjoy your Tuesday!

  5. Guava stumped me,but I came up with a blind solve, realized I needed a g and a u so guava came to mind even though I wasn’t familiar with that word, which was new to me.

    • Great work on the blind solve, Chuck! I had to work a little harder on this one but the payoff was a perfect surprise answer. Take care and thanks for filling us in on how you figured it out.

  6. Hi all – Well, his chicken could eat the crickets. I wish he’d stop choking the poor thing, THOUGH. I had a VAGUE thought for a second, but was surprised that I got GUAVA, since I never eat them and rarely even notice them (even at my Lucky supermarket, where (Angela) the song from the ceiling was “Rock the Boat” which you used recently.)

THOUGH the musician’s instrument broke just before the FINALE, he quickly carved a new FLUTE from a GUAVA and saved the performance.

Ang, 🎵“Grey skies are gonna clear up. Put on a happy face…”🎵

History – 1970 – Apollo 13 arrives safely back on Earth after a harrowing journey.

    • Just like my mom always used to say: “If life gives you guavas, make a flute!” 😂

I really did enjoy your sentence though, Steve. Very creative!!!

      • Thanks Mike! “If life hands you a guava, carve a bowl for your Del’s Frozen Lemonade.” Old Rhode Island proverb. Hey, the Twins got the right idea about the weather – go play in Puerto Rico!

        • I agree, and I’m sure the Red Sox are happy to be out west for their road trip. It’s too late of a start time for me so it’ll be highlights on the news in the morning. 🙂

    • ..Thanks, G. 🎶 Think of banana splits and licorice, and you’ll feel fine…🎶 Maybe I will do a banana split! 🍌 😂 Question…Did the GUAVA play SWEET music? 😂 And I hate doing this to you…but once again, “Rock the Boat”? As a musical entry? Or SOMETHING else? 😉🙋🏻

      • I thought you used it as a song at the beginning of one of the recent sailing themed puzzles. Really, I just checked my gas, and it’s off! 😂🙋🏻‍♂️

        • Did I? Maybe, I’d have to check…But you do know this isn’t my only gig, right? 😉 SMH…This keeps up, I may just end up putting my head in the oven…😂🙋🏻

        • Hey, G. Lou went through my music selections. He has the patience I lack with the minutiae. Although CONSIDERING I do split it 4 ways…(The patience, not the minutiae)!! Hmm…😂
Yes, I did use it, back on January 8th, the Poseidon Adventure puzzle. Makes sense, huh? 😂
I wasn’t sure. What made it worse, is that it’s a song we listen to often..(to remind one another??!), so it’s in my head a lot of the time. And I think you and I bandied it’s lyrics a few times on here too. I guess this 3:30-4AM writing may be starting to take its toll…😂
Lou said I have a bunch of water/sea/boat related songs. WATER the odds? Anyway, Phew…Glad we cleared that up…now it’s safe to go back near the oven! 🙄😂
          Catch you later, Bud! ..⛴⛵️🙋🏻

          • You got a regular cutting bureau of Lous going there! Thanks to all of you for the research. Going to have dinner and catch up on the hockey playoffs. 🙋🏻‍♂️

            • G..There’s only one Lou that has the patience for anything paper related. Maybe I worded it wrong.. The rest of us? Not so much! Enjoy your night. Good luck with your game…🙋🏻

  7. I had fineal first for a cw, which I didn’t even spell right (finial). Then I thought about Mike’s advice to try something else if a word is too unusual.

    • I’m glad my tip helped you out, Caroline! Although FINIAL didn’t come to mind for me, I’m sure a lot of other players tried it and ran into the same problem. Enjoy your Tuesday! 🙂

  8. Just for Angela for yesterday’s ditty:
There’s an opera entitled “The Magic FLUTE
THOUGH with no mention of GUAVA fruit
    It’s FINALE and chorus
    Was written just for us
So here’s to Mozart, a hearty salute.

    • Bravo! 👏🏻 EnCORE! (Well, not the GUAVA)! 😉
Thank you, Earl! How very, very SWEET of you! I love it! We’ve made beautiful music here today, haven’t we? 😂 It’s been a very FRUITful endeavor! And how could you know that I love the overture to the Magic Flute? Thank you soooo much. Your wit, your creativity, your whimsy…You’ve made my day! I salute you, Kind Sir! 🍷🙋🏻

      • You are most welcome. Glad I could make someone’s day more pleasant. Not always very good at that.
I had no idea you were a Fan Of “The Magic Flute” Thinking about possible ways to use GUAVA prompted the FLUTE idea for a limmerick. Why doesn’t auto-correct like that word???

        • Well, Earl, you’ve surely made mine. And I’m not lending any credence to your claim of not cheering people up. I’m just chalking it up to the humble man that you appear to be. I didn’t think you’d know of my appreciation of Mozart. Despite all the music talk, I don’t remember us ever mentioning “long haired” music here. I’m not a fan of it all, but for some reason I have an affinity for Mozart. Especially “The Magic Flute” and specifically the overture. Must have had one good music teacher somewhere along the line. Catholic schools never stressed the arts very much. They dabbled, but nothing to write home about. I still don’t know how Guava prompted Flute to you, but I love the imagination behind it! Bravo once more! As to the auto-correct, which word are you referring to? I have trouble with so many of them! And always being in a rush, I’ve caused quite a few problems for myself! 🙄 Hence my referring to it as the auto-INcorrect. The only reason I keep it on is because it helps me go faster with my writings, especially since I have a ton of short cuts locked in. Thanks again, Earl…❤️🙋🏻

        • Earl…Waiting for my friend…time to kill…Wrote these for you….🙋🏻

Sipping her GUAVA lime cocktail from the crystal FLUTE, she smiled thinking that even THOUGH the show ended, she couldn’t have asked for a more successful FINALE.<br /

Looking over the table set with a crystal FLUTE each, with which they’d toast one another, and their favorite GUAVA sliced and placed on china plates, they both knew that even THOUGH they were hoping for the best, this dinner would most likely be the FINALE to their marriage.

The Fruit Festival FINALE, set for the end of the month would work perfectly, because both the FLUTE and percussion sections would be back from hiatus; and even THOUGH they couldn’t guarantee a cornucopia of fruit, at least the GUAVA would be in season.

  9. Hi, all! What a funny cartoon picture! The comedian looked so precious, vulnerable, and naïve standing there holding his rubber chicken in one hand and a little percussion instrument in the other while expressing disbelief in being told that he was not funny. Bless his little pea-picking heart.

I solved the cartoon and words immediately except for saying “vague” before quickly seeing GUAVA. In Hawaii, we ate a lot of mangos & papayas, but I don’t remember eating guavas.

Back to bed with me where I plan to stay for two more days, judging from how long it took daughter & Jerry to get over whatever I now have. I got up just to eat more chicken-noodle soup and do the Jumble. See you tomorrow.

    • I hope you feel better real soon, Lelia. Chicken noodle soup paired with the Jumble sounds like wonderful medicine. Please let us know how you feel tomorrow, ok?

      • Hi, Mike! Thank you so much for your continued sweet, kind words of encouragement for me with this “bug” I am fighting.

When I mentioned tomato soup as one of my fav comfort foods, I was too sleepy and coughing too hard to say it all. I usually say: One of my fav comfort foods is Campbell’s Tomato Soup served with toast, cheese toast, or a grilled cheese-sandwich. After reading your comments yesterday, I can now add croutons to that list. Yum!

Rooting for your Red Sox! Play ball!

        • You’re most welcome, Lelia. I’m positive you’ll feel better with some rest.

I enjoy garlic and cheese flavored croutons in my tomato soup for added crunch. It makes for a satisfying light lunch and tastes great! Sometimes I’ll add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top if I really want to gild the lily. 😊

The Red Sox are on the west coast which means it’s a 10pm start time and too late for me to enjoy the game. I’m happy that you’ll take my place!

    • Hi Lelia – Rest up and get well soon! Just a note as I head out the door – I didn’t recognize your song or initials yesterday, so I looked up the lyrics and found I did know “Peace In the Valley”, but I’m familiar with it not by R.T. but by E.P. – Elvis Presley, from, appropriately enough, an EP – an Extended Play 45 RPM single containing four songs instead of the usual two, from 1957.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_in_the_Valley_(EP)

Here’s a trivia question to run by your musical family – How many grooves are there on an average LP album?

    • Lelia Ann,the question for today is do you prefer milk or water when making Campbell’s Tomato Soup. Our family always used milk and my wife’s side used water. It took me awhile to get use to her way of making it. Let’s hear from others to see what the winner is.

      • I make it from scratch, and use butter with flour. 🍅 I’ve never tasted the one in the can. 🍅🙋🏻

      • Neither. I used to eat mine just like the dinosaur in Jurassic Park ate the lawyer — straight outta the can! Although I switched to Progresso long ago, and only buy it when the sales bring it down to 99¢ each; just gotta be patient. 🙋🏻‍♂️

  10. I scanned through the other comments to see if anyone had thought it was a reference to Carrot Top due to his red hair and using props!

    • Hi Clay. Good guess! And you may be right. But in my paper, and on the on-line site most of us use, his hair, while appearing light, looks brownish. Although he could be a ginger! The only one who would truly know is Jeff, and even though he doesn’t do the coloring of the cartoons, if Carrot Top was his “intended victim”, I’m sure he’d pass that info on to his fellow cartoonist. We’ll just have to wait and see if Jeff looks in. Be well! 🖌🙋🏻

  11. Mike, your always full of useful information. I’ll have to google Lisa Sears, I never heard of her. Thanks for being so good at your job. Angela until I read Earls blog I didn’t realize your opening was a song. You two guys are A+ when it comes to all around music. I’m stuck in a time-warp. It’s mostly 50s and 60s with a slight turn to 70,80,90s. And I do mean slight turn. Well done as always.

    • Brooklyn..You’re making me giggle! My opening’s a song every day…with the 🎶musical notes before and after…🎶 And as I told Earl before, Jeff introduced us to Lissa Sears here on the blog back on December 5th. And you’re not stuck in a time warp, Bud. The Billie Holiday song, may be from the 30’s or 40’s. Before your time…And wayyyyyyyyy before mine! I only know of it because of my Father’s old 78 collection. He left me masterpieces! Thanks for the shout out. You know you’re aces ❤️ in my book! (Did you check out my reply to you y’day? If not, I thanked you for your concern). Mets are on SNY, cold at CitiField!…Have a good night, Brooklyn! 🙋🏻
