Good morning, Jumble fans, and happy Thursday! I couldn’t be more excited as today is the Opening Day of the MLB regular season. After 152 LONG days of waiting, “America’s Pastime” is finally back and the season will last (if there is a game #7 of the World Series) until Halloween night. Ok, enough about baseball because it’s the Jumble that you came here to read about, and what a fun puzzle we had today. I’m here to break it down for you and touch all the bases!

Leading off today’s game was RANCH. It was instantly visible as was the next word which was TARDY. Starting out with an instant double was a great way to begin the game, but my enthusiastic spirit started to wane when I arrived at OPAQUE. It’s unique blend of uncommon letters momentarily blurred my vision until I used my tried and true solving technique which is to try the anagram backwards. The OPA brought the word instantly to mind bringing me to the final, and in my opinion, most challenging clue word of the day. David was definitely throwing us some heat by starting the anagram with OVEN but it wasn’t enough to make me reach for it. I decided to once again start from the back where I was met with an I and the N close by which brought INVOKE to mind. With all of the clue words out of the way, I was waved into home and could begin my favorite part which of course is the cartoon!

There sure were a lot of moose greeting me upon first glance. In New Hampshire we jokingly refer to a group of moose as “meese” which is funny until you meet up with a group of them standing in the roadway as your zipping down the Kancamagus Highway at 40 mph. I counted 5 in the cartoon and knew exactly what the setting was for today’s panel — WALLEY WORLD!

Is that Clark Griswold with his young son Rusty from the 1983 comedy classic “National Lampoon’s Vacation“? It sure looks like them and the dialogue confirmed my suspicion. As they get ready to enter the park, the wide-eyed youngster is mesmerized by the giant moose head staring at him from atop the gate and his mouth is wide open as he prepares to head in. Although Jeff didn’t give us a baseball themed puzzle for today, I was more than thrilled to see this one in it’s place. My favorite detail had to be the shadowy figure in the background holding a moose balloon. Superb job, Jeff!!!

The final solution was 9-letters long and I had no clue as to what the answer would be. Writing out the clue letters, I started my solve from the back for the third time today. EN allowed me to see ENTRANCE with a D left over. Plopping it on the end was all that was needed to finish this one off and I was done. Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you tomorrow.   2. 🎶 Last night I took a walk after dark…A swingin’ place called Palisades PARK to have some fun and see what I could see..That’s where the girls are…I took a ride on a SHOOT THE CHUTE, that girl I sat beside was awful cute…And after while she was holdin’ hands with me…My heart was flyin’ up like a ROCKET SHIP, down like a ROLLER COASTER, back like a LOOP THE LOOP, and around like a MERRY GO ROUND…You’ll never know how great a kiss can feel when you stop at the top of a FERRIS WHEEL…When I fell in love down at Palisades PARK…🎶

    🎡 For those who suffer vertigo, amusement parks can be
    A little on the iffy side, OPAQUE we may agree…
    There’s rides that climb into the sky, then plummet way back down
    It seems so much more rational to stay upon the ground…
    But these fun parks are popular, and people love to party
    They plan road trips, the crowds gather…you don’t want to be TARDY.
    I think if I would see myself on rides up in the air…
    I’d toss and turn until I woke cause it’d be a nightmare!
    I’d INVOKE every saint there is to save me from this plight
    For only in a dream would I be part of these ride’s flight…
    I like my feet upon the ground, so trust me bet the RANCH
    I’d visit with the kids, but no, you won’t see me ENTRANCED!🎡

    Looking at today’s words, you may want to Crank out some Charm from RANCH. And maybe INVOKE a higher power to see clearly through OPAQUE…Because even though we’ve seen these words before, they may not be everyone’s favorites…But ALCES this, we prevail, and will not be TARDY for the party….So, let’s SLIDE over to our cartoon. Unfortunately today we’re not at the PARK we had hoped for…Instead, we’ve taken a TURN. STILEish as it appears…this isn’t a Ballpark. Instead Jeff’s chosen to RIDE us, with a LAMPOON of an AMOOSEment PARK. Parks of this kind are NATIONAL treasures, and they’ve started a REVOLUTION of sorts…Anyway, let me cut to the CHASE…We see a young boy, Rusty, at the ENTRANCE of what appears to be WALLY WORLD. Or is it WALLEY WORLD? E! Who NOSE? His Father, Clark, is asking if he’s REDdy to go in…Most likely, DEER on VACATION, and today, have shown up in our CARtoon. Obviously overwhelmed by the huge welcoming MOOSE head, Rusty stands, mouth agape, and just stares…Our question asks…the little boy was what??? ENTRANCED! Good one, David! We ARE aMOOSEd! Ok, on to our eye candy. Of course, there’s Rusty’s T-Shirt, with Wally’s image. There’s the woman going through the Turnstile, with her Pom Pom socks, her WALLY ticket, and her tongue stuck out! There’s the ubiquitous Roller Coaster with the “hands in the air” obvious thrills… and there’s that Tilt-a-Whirl ride…Hmm. I can’t decide…just going AROUND in CIRCLES here…Ah, got it! In the back, there’s a couple…He with a MOOSEhead balloon…and she with Cotton CANDY…’Nuff said! Have a great day, Everybone! And maybe watch NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION, and enjoy the RIDE! 🎡🙋🏻

  4. Good morning. Great post Mike. Wish I knew your trick before this puzzle today Thank you for that information. Angela great job as well. Good choice for the song and nice job getting the words all in. For me it was a total loss. I had to look for the answer to Opaque. Then when I started to do the cartoon,I again was stuck. My son sat down for a bowl of cereal before heading out the door so I asked for help. Right away he knew about the picture being a take on the movie with Chevy Chase. He rearranged the letters for a different look and had the answer in 2-3 minutes. I still wasn’t sure until your blog finally came. I don’t think I would have ever gotten the answer. The only satisfaction I received out of this was::: You always want your kids to do better than you and in this case as in many others,as parents we did a heck of a job. We get an A+ for that. Thank God. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Thanks, Paul. Yesterday you solved it with ease and it had me a bit stumped. It happens from time to time so don’t let it frustrate you. The movie was “before my time” but being a fan of Chevy Chase, I knew what it was. The Christmas Vacation movie is my favorite and we play it all the time during the holidays.   6. The dude RANCH foreman had a strict TARDY policy about chores and wanted to INVOKE it and not be OPAQUE with the hands.
    No problem with clue words or the solution.

  7. Opaque? That was a first challenge,as was the solution.But with a little forethought,and ‘ed’ as an obvious ending of the word ,entranced came readily to mind.

  10. Hi all – Is this a New Hampshire amusement park? I thought the kid looked a bit apprehensive, as I would have been. He definitely BRAKED FOR MOOSE at the entrance.

    Finally, an A’s opening day actually during the daytime! Forecast 76° and sunny. This year is the 60th anniversary of the Giants’ arrival in the Bay Area,, and the A’s 50th. A’s at 1:00, Giants in LA at 4:00 PST.

      In the film, the Walley World theme park is represented by Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. Santa Anita Park’s large parking lot and blue-tinged fascia served as the exterior of Walley World, while all park interior scenes were shot at Magic Mountain. The two roller coasters seen in the film are The New Revolution, which can be recognized by the vertical loop, and Colossus, the double-track wooden roller coaster.

  12. Hi, all! Fun Jumble cartoon today, reminding us of memorable visits to amusement parks & all the many different kinds of entertainment they afford.

    Our paper is in the yard so I visited Seattle with the Jumble site in color and with sound effects & a timer. Thought a Thursday one might slow me down, but my final time was only 2 minutes & 23 seconds. No trouble with any words or the solve.

    Today was a good day for a quick solve because I am headed to my 6-month check up with my dermatologist, eating lunch out with Jerry, & getting a couple of items off of our Walmart list.

We just got home from lunch at Old Country Buffet where I enjoyed delicious cornbread with honey, wonderful beef/mushroom gravy on my mashed potatoes, spaghetti with tiny tender meatballs in the chunky tomato sauce, a bowl of yummy steamed broccoli drizzled with a spicy melted cheese sauce, buttered carrots, and scrumptious hot peach cobbler. YUM!!

You & I have been swapping compliments about your post & my sentence, but Mrs. Three Hours Late has NEVER thought your comments to her were late because she is happy when she finds one any day, any time, today, tomorrow, or a week from now because of being aware of & sympathetic to how very much you do taking excellent care of your precious young family.

    Loved hearing about your pretty yellow beehive, but driving home with bees in the back of your SUV! Whoa!!

    I made up Sam’s Seafood Shack. I also made up playing darts at a pub, but I do love playing darts. We started our kids out with magnetic ones and moved up to big, sharp darts with a target board that made sounds.

  14. Hi, Steve! I thanked you 2 days ago for The Taxman, but I have to thank you again for it because I am still enjoying it so much and so is Jerry. I heard him saying, “Cause I’m the taxman” after I Googled it & read it to him with the correct tempo.

    I Googled it again to start picking up on the tune. The one I listen to is 4 silhouettes walking left to right in a line across a pretty bright bluish screen. I love the lyrics, the lively tempo, and the wonderful guitar playing during a break and throughout the song.

    I’m still singing it, and when I told Jerry I was going to thank you again for it, he said I could thank you again for his birthday song which we listened to together on his birthday after he got home from his prospector’s steak fry outing.

    The only thing I have left is doctor bills but because I have chosen this year to clean out every single folder making the job take forever, next year will be a breeze.

    • No problem, Lelia. I was going to mention that YouTube “Taxman” that you found. The company that controls the Beatles’ music keeps it off the site, but that one is the best cover version of a song I’ve ever heard. I had to listen *really* carefully to agree with the comments that it’s not the original.

      I’m also about a year behind compiling and sorting my bills, etc., but hopefully soon. Last year we got a letter from the IRS saying we owed $3000 on the previous year’s taxes. I knew that was a mistake, but it was nice to just be able to tell our tax guy “here, handle this” and it was all fixed a couple of months later. Saved a lot of stress!

        Between CPA’s and H & R Block, I did our taxes myself for years, but now I agree with you that having a tax man is nice for less stress/peace of mind.

        I Googled William Joseph Skowron, nicknamed “Moose,” which gave me 4 pages written by Wikipedia. He was portrayed as having been quite a baseball player and a man worth remembering.

  15. Once again I had to back in, this time into OPAQUE. I did think of epoque, which isn’t spelled right (epoch). Though I didn’t get the Lampoon reference , I still thoroughly enjoyed Jeff’s drawing.

    • Hi, Caroline! I clip out all the jumbles, but on today’s cartoon I put a small post-it tag on it so I can flip back to it quickly. It really connected with me — probably because I enjoy theme parks so much. 😊

            And of course, Moose Skowron. I couldn’t tell you anything about him (Pirates?), but I certainly remember the name, maybe in conjunction with Hank Aaron somehow? Ok, now that’s what Wikipedia is for!

              • G,Of course I knew what you meant, Bud! I was just going for the play on words….NY’s 5 boroughs are notoriously known for butchering the English language. And each of us from the different boroughs SWEAR we tawk better than the others. A good ear can tell the difference too, trust me! 🙄 So that’s why I gave Earl the “Queens” English, to emphasis Paul and I speaking with a different accent than those in the Bronx, etc…Elementary, my Dear Watson…🙋🏻

        • Hi Caroline. How’re you? I do know about Moose Skowron. Even though he played for the Yankees, my Father liked him. We’re lucky to still have a few of the baseball cards He saved, and Skowron is one of them. I know it’s a Yankee card, and I think it’s from the late 50’s. I’m constantly scouting for old baseball cards, on line and in the shops. I came across one of his in a shop about a year ago, and when I said “Oh, Moose Skowron”..my little nephew cracked up. (The name Moose)…No respect, these kids today! Hope you’re having a good night. 🙋🏻

          • I looked up Moose Skowron and saw how far off I was.
            I think its because all us New Englanders had to suppress our memories of the Yankees in those days (namely, getting repeatedly clobbered by them.) 🙋🏻‍♂️

My Father told us he was a stand up guy, and you know that’s important in NY. I went back to read it again Yea, you’re right..Way out in left field with the Hank Aaron…although they may have crossed paths in the latter part of Skowron’s career. IDK. I’m just really out of it today. I didn’t get back until late afternoon. Lou3 and I were in the city since morning for the “Celebration of Life” memorial for the fallen Firefighter/Soldier killed in that Iraqi helicopter crash. Heart wrenching. Gut wrenching. Beautiful, symbolic ceremony, but it beat the c–p out of me. I still don’t think I’m forming complete sentences…Not that I normally do as a rule…Just a lousy day. And Rusty…Anyway, how’d you guys do? NY stood up, 2 wins. But I think the Mets always start off with the Big Bang. I’m not sure, but I think they have the winningest or almost winningest record for opening day.       • That’s neat, Angela, that your dad only kept cards of stand up players. I was just reading that Skowron got the name because people thought he looked like Mussolini as a kid and it was shortened to Moose.

        • Well stand up guys that were Yankees anyway! I’m sure there’s a rogue or two in the mix. He just had that typical “Yankee disdain” that all the old Brooklyn Dodger fans of His time held on to. We’d always tease Him about not keeping a Mantle or a Maris. Now THAT would definitely have made for a legacy…I didn’t know that about Mussolini…poor kid. Thank God they shortened it! 🙋🏻
