THE TENNIS PLAYER HADN’T LOST A SINGLE GAME TO HER OPPONENT AND WAS – – –

ASTNOLITWEL = ALL SET TO WIN

Good Thursday morning, fellow Jumblers! TASTY appears to be a new clue word, or we just haven’t seen it in a really long time. Either way it was instantly visible and no trouble at all. NOVEL was last used on 8/5/17 where the anagram was identical to the one we see today. THRIFT came quickly with the two T’s neatly placed next to each other leaving WEEKLY to take a few extra glances before it came into view. David did an excellent job of placing the Y before the L to keep us from quickly finding the -LY ending that is most common with adverbs making it my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day.

Looking at today’s panel made me let out a slight groan knowing that a tennis themed panel was going to be a challenge for me to talk about. Being more of an optimist, I put my feelings about tennis aside and decided to focus on what I enjoyed in today’s piece instead. Two tennis players are the main characters that we see today with the player in the background getting ready to serve the ball to her opponent. The scoreboard in the background identifies the players as KING and KENT with Billie Jean King being the obvious tennis star that Jeff has drawn. Not knowing how tennis is scored, I relied upon the dialogue of the man and woman sitting in the stands to clue me in that the game is just about over and King was going to reign supreme.

The letter layout for the final solution was very cryptic with no obvious words jumping out at me. Using the dialogue and sentence allowed WIN to come to mind as it was stated that the player hadn’t lost a single game. After crossing WIN out, TO was together and I decided to go with it as the 2-letter word. With only 6-letters remaining, ALL was clearly visible leaving SET for the finish. I’ll leave it here for today as my tennis-challenged brain has had more than enough of a workout to get me this far!!! Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you tomorrow! 🎾

    🎾 A tennis court, a game is played, the rivalry is set
    The object being who’s supreme to get over the net…
    Two women shown, one dominant, the other getting beat
    Those WEEKLY practice sessions not enough, and now defeat.
    I guess practice must be constant, here THRIFT just doesn’t play
    One probably should be out there doing it like every day.
    I’ve tried my “hand” at tennis, (yes I put the pun in there)…
    I liked the NOVEL outfits that the tennis players wear.
    I figured it’s like baseball, and I can swing a bat…
    It proved to a different swing…I couldn’t master that.
    A TASTY bit of knowledge, I swallowed with chagrin
    I faced the fact that I would never be ALL SET TO WIN! 🎾

    Looking at today’s words, they were easy to ACE, but if I had to BREAK it down, I think NOVEL would be the word I’d SINGLE out as a bit of a tic. We’ve seen them all beFORE. HAND it over to David, though, these are great new anagrams. Ok, SWINGING over to our cartoon. I don’t think we’ve seen a TENNIS puzzle since July 23rd, but I’m RALLY not sure. We see two women, on a Tennis Court. The one facing us in the cartoon is way aHEAD of her opponent. She’s definitely not showing her any LOVE. I mean, she hasn’t LET this poor woman get a SHOT in edgewise! Since the scoreboard reads KING vs KENT, I wondered for a moment if we could be seeing Billy Jean King, but TBT, I don’t ever remember her having such long hair. I could be wrong, but it was worth a SHOT. Anyway, in Tennis, each MATCH is made up of 2-3 SETS, and to win a SET, at least 6 games must be won. The scoreboard shows the first SET, 6, and the second at 5, with the winning MATCH POINT about to be made, as our male spectator is saying. So, with our question asking what our player was: She was…ALL SET TO WIN! SMASH! Great LOB, David! You’ve SERVED up another good one! Ok, eye candy…Tough one. The blackened silhouettes are interesting, but there’s no ACTION there. Our couple? The woman? Blond, in purple? Hmm. What’s the POINT? I guess I’ll go with our winners facial expression…Smiling, with her tongue extended over her bottom lip…I think Jeff just likes that little TOUCH! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And PASS a little LOVE on to someone today…I’m sure it’ll be RETURNed! 🎾🙋🏻

    • Posted mine before I read yours Angela. Great tennis references and I think you are correct about Billie Jean’s hair—don’t remember it ever being long or in a pig tail. But with KING on the scoreboard, I went with it in my sentence.

  3. Good morning. I go to the Thrift shop on a Weekly basis because of the Tasty Hors D’oeuvres they serve while you shop for a Novel.

  4. On her WEEKLY trip to the THRIFT shop, Billie Jean found an exciting NOVEL and treated herself to a TASTY snack.
    No trouble with the clue words or the solution. But I have an ADVANTAGE over you Mike in that I am an OLD tennis player, so when I looked at the cartoon and the score, I was sure that SET and WIN would be in the answer. Once I had that, the rest was a SMASH and I LOVED the cartoon.

    Oh BTW: I had written my sentence before I read your post, so Billie Jean King was on my mind also. Any idea who the KENT on the scoreboard might be?

    • Good morning, Earl! Yes, you definitely held the advantage over me as it was a struggle putting words to my thoughts. Knowing that around 10,000 people visit a day made me nervous that I’d goof up and say something silly so I kept is short and sweet.

      I did a search for Kent and couldn’t find much so I left it alone. I’m sure someone will have your answer.

      You actually used Billie Jean King in your sentence which was a pleasant surprise! Great job as always, my friend! 🙂🙂🙂

No way was I going to be able to use Novel the way you and Paul did, and have it relate to the cartoon, so I was glad it held another meaning for me to work with. I thought maybe throwing in a tennis novel, but that would have opened up a whole new can of balls! Have a good one! 🎾🙋🏻

  5. I used to play some tennis myself, so I didn’t have any trouble today. I thought of SET and TO first. I don’t think Jeff’s a tennis player because the score on the board is wrong. It should be 40, not 45. Tennis scores are 15, 30, 40. There are some theories about why this is out there.

    • Thanks for mentioning the score, Caroline! Doing a Google search, I found out about the scoring being off and couldn’t figure out why he left it at 45. He probably wanted to see who were the true tennis fans!

      As for Jeff being a tennis player, I’m not sure. I do recall him mentioning that he was a either a fan of the sport or one of his children played the game. 🙂

Perhaps Jeff did post 45 on purpose as Mike thinks. I recall that Jeff and his daughter play golf, but I don’t remember anything about them and tennis.

  6. Good morning again on this beautiful day. I was chopping at the bit to get the sentence out. I was up early and with my son cleared the front and back of the house from all the snow. I looked for my paper but there wasn’t any. But as luck would have it since I signed up for the news again I also get it on my phone. I just had to scroll through until the jumble appeared. The words were no problem,almost instant reads. Knowing nothing about tennis, the cartoon took jumbling (no pun intended) to get the answer. All and all,a great day so far. Mike and Angela great post as always. Looking at the cartoon on the phone let me to think it was Billie Jean King and McEnroe. After this post I’ll have to go back and enlarge the picture Thanks Earl for the shout out. We are similar and I like yours as well. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • How much snow did you get, Paul? It’s still lightly falling here with maybe a total of 2”. Your son is a great guy for taking care of the shoveling duties and you’re lucky that he lives close enough for him to be able to. 🙂

      • I forgot to take the ruller out when we stated shoving. Its not snowing here any more. I’d say st least 6″. Right now it’s the three of us living together. House is too big to live alone. I’m blessed,we get along great. It’s been 2-3 years together as they are saving for a house. Not once have we had any harsh words among ourselves.

        • I must apologize because I do remember you previously sharing that. You’re the best dad for letting them live with you. My dad did a similar thing for us when I was just starting out. He let us live in one of his rentals and we paid about 2/3 of what he normally asks for. On our wedding day, one of his gifts to us was a bank book with all of our rent money plus interest. I never saw it coming and it’s surprising how much it added up to over those few years.

          The snow has stopped and we were spared this time. Any prediction on how much snow we’ll get next Wednesday/Thursday??? 😂😂😂

            • It was and always will be a very special memory for me. As for the next storm, I say bring it on!!! I’m at the point where I’ve had enough but now I want to see how long mother nature can keep up her antics!!! You ever get that feeling?

    • Thanks, Brooklyn. We didn’t see the News here, and they didn’t get one on my block either. Could be the delivery trucks. I think the plant’s some where in Queens. They got hit bad. My family out on the Island, Dix Hills, Commack, etc got buried. How’d your son out there make out? I think they took the brunt of it. My brother said it was still snowing like crazy way into this morning…❄️❄️🙋🏻

      • I finally got my paper. There is a fairly new Costco off of Foster Ave next to the Foster Market where everybody would buy their Christmas Trees every year. The snow fall for three of my kids out in Long Island ranged from 12″ to 14″ at the least.

        • Had to be the trucks then. Nothing here yet…The Forgotten Borough!
          Yes, I know, my cousin said he went to the newer one. Easier trip than the other. He likes it better too. My brother in Commack got 17 Dix Hills 16. Bay Shore got 21. We have a lot of melting going on here, you must too. Streets are flooded. There’ll be ice skating tonight! 🙋🏻

  7. No problem with the clue words or cartoon answer today even though I know nothing about tennis. Thanks for the scoring lesson, Caroline. I often learn something new from all of you folks, mostly to observe the cartoon more closely. I can’t believe all the snow you are getting back there. It seem to be one storm right after the other. My hats off to you shoveling your way through the days and nights. Keep warm.

    • Hey Betty..Tks! It’s like it never ends! But it isn’t that cold. Right now it’s in the low 40”s and unbelievably sunny. Shedded half the clothing while shoveling. A lot of meltdown. Huge drifts falling of the roofs. Now we have to worry about all the re-freezing over night..An endless cycle! Or should I say iceCYCLE! And we’re getting threatened with one more I think…Mother Nature! Hope you’re enjoying your day! And yes, kudos to Caroline again! 🙋🏻

  8. Hi, all! I did not get the cartoon answer first, but solved the words as fast as I could write them & write them I did, so I wouldn’t have to solve them again as I have had to do before. I purchase a TASTY NOVEL at the THRIFT store WEEKLY. (And while I’m there, I see Steve buying a vintage record album.)

    Looking at the letters I had written in a nice, neat line of all capital letters, as Mike writes them, the first tennis word I saw was SET. The player, with her stance, looked ALL SET TO WIN. Done! Then I copied Mike’s careful ways again by putting a dot above every letter that I had used in my answer to double-check my work. I have learned a lot from Mike about solving carefully, and I have a long list of the techniques he uses to solve the words.

    Now, with breakfast eaten and Jumble puzzle solved, I’m off to get my semi-annual teeth cleaning. I’ll read your comments when I return. This has been a busy week helping our daughter move and baby-sitting 3 of her babies; 2 turtles and a cat but not the bird.

    • Good morning, Lelia, and I COMPLETELY forgot posting that image! It was 2/10/17 and I’m astounded that you actually remember it. I had to go back and check my photo history to get the exact date for you.

      I’m tickled that you find my techniques and musings helpful. The point of this website was to offer up hints and tricks to help with the solve, and what a long way it’s come since then. Perhaps I should get “back to basics” and start posting my methods in the next few weeks.

      Enjoy your morning as well as the dentist visit. And pace yourself with those young ones… they can be a handful! 😉

      • If I don’t get the answer right away, there are two VERY basic things I always do.
        1 – Recheck the spelling of the words to make sure you have the right letters in the circles.
        2 – Count the number of letters in the answer to be sure it matches the number of letters you wrote down.
        Don’t laugh! 😂 These have saved me a lot of time, more often than I care to admit.
        The most useful trick I’ve learned here is to write the consonants and vowels on separate lines.

      • Mike, ever since I saw that image of your neatly written capital letters with a nice neat little dot over each letter for checking the answer, that’s how my solve has looked on the days I don’t get the cartoon answer first. Also, when I write the clue words in the boxes, I make neat capital letters in the circles twice as tall as letters that are not in circles. That makes it easier to write that neat line of capital letters without including letters that are not in circles or leaving some circled ones out. Writing carefully doesn’t add much time to my solve and eliminates what you call “rookie mistakes.” Before I saw your post that day, I scribbled my words & letters and made every mistake in the book, so thanks again for encouraging me to “slow down” as my dad told me all the time saying, “Take it easy greasy; you’ve got a long way to slide,” meaning “slow down, little one; you have a lot more life to live.”

        My baby-sitting sentence was misleading. Diane’s 4 children are grown; we are only baby-sitting 2 turtles in terrariums which are no trouble at all. I got to play with the cat for only one hour before her youngest daughter took it to oldest daughter’s apartment where she was spending the night. We volunteered to keep the bird but she had other plans.

      • Hi, Steve! Thanks for the ice hockey update. Quite a while back when you first mentioned ice hockey to me, you said that you would love for your Sharks to win the Stanley Cup. If they make it to first place in the Pacific Division, would that be the same thing?

        • Lelia, two things.
          There’s a good chance that our local Sharks’ announcing team of Randy Hahn and Bret Hedican will be calling the NBC game tonight.

          I should have said the Cup series are “best of seven”, not “seven games.”
          Since you can sweep a series with 4 wins, an undefeated run to the cup would take “only” 16 wins, and it could take as many as 28.

    Are you *sure* that’s a woman in the foreground? Here’s my idea from *way* off the BASELINE – that’s a young Bobby playing under an assumed name ‘Kent’ to prepare for his future match with Ms. Moffitt-King, but from the score, he may feel that the match is RIGGED! (Ow! I think I just sprained a brain muscle stretching for that one!)

    Don’t sprain anything shoveling. We may get thunderstorms this afternoon.

  10. I really struggled with the answer this morning since there were so many potential 3 letter words. I think coming upon SET finally put things in motion for me (that was several hours ago!). All of the CWs except NOVEL were instant.

    I may know how to score in tennis but I had no idea what a lug wrench was yesterday. Another strange thing about tennis scores – love means 0.
