Happy Thursday morning, Jumble friends! DOUSE and EMBODY were the clue words that took an extra glance to figure out. EMBODY was probably the more difficult of the two because it’s just obsure enough that we don’t often see it in print. We’ve encountered some difficult clue words over the past few days so I felt redeemed in being able to solve all of them so quickly.

If you thought that folding origami shapes was a tedious and nearly impossible task, imagine how Jeff must have felt having to draw the 12 pieces that we see in today’s cartoon! I was hesitant to count the paper airplane that’s sitting on the counter, but I guess it technically is origami so I let it fly. My favorite shape was the velociraptor in the middle of the display tray that the woman is holding. I’ve added a close-up image of all three pieces down below.

The name of the business is FOUR CORNERS ORAGAMI and it can be clearly seen on the window in a font that we typically see on a Chinese food take-out container. The word “ORAGAMI” is spelled incorrectly on the window so perhaps that and the fact that the niche market this business caters to caused its demise.

The dialogue informs us that the business is going under because they weren’t able to make paper out of folded paper. That was a pretty cheesy joke but looking at some asking prices for origami figures on Etsy tells a completely different story. There’s a dragon on there with a price tag on it of $250!!! There’s no doubt the skill level involved in making that piece took years to master and we all know our time is worth something.

The surprise answer was unusually long containing both an 8 and 6-letter word. The letter layout was cryptic and didn’t give the answer away. David was back at it again today with his double consonant shenanigans but it wasn’t enough to throw me off track. BUSINESS took just a few seconds to come to mind leaving FOLDED for the finish.   2. 🎶I’m gonna buy a PAPER DOLL that I can call my own, A DOLL that other fellows cannot steal. And then the flirty, flirty guys with their flirty, flirty eyes, will have to flirt with dollies that are real…When I come home at night she will be waiting, she’ll be the truest DOLL in all this world…I’d rather have a PAPER DOLL to call my own…Than have a fickle-minded real live girl….🎶

    💌 The art of Origami kind of always made me FLINCH
    My fingernails made it real hard to fold within an inch…
    An artist must EMBODY patience and a sense of flair
    To create tiny items, little dogs and little bears.
    One can get quite excited with a passion hard to DOUSE
    And then you’ll see whole shelves of them around a persons house…
    They look so cute, arranged in pairs, a glass case is a must
    Or they could get quite MESSY, and they’re not easy to dust.
    But an Origami store where “paperwork” is all they did?
    I’ve never seen one, so it seems that this BUSINESS FOLDED! 💌

    We’ve seen today’s words in the PAPER before, and DOUSE may have even been PUT OUT there in the exact same way. And once reading todays question, my excitement immediately inCREASED, since the answer was pretty CUT and dry. The ORIGAMI company couldn’t make a profit, so the…BUSINESS FOLDED! No need to CUT any CORNERS, it just unFOLDED like an open book! In case you’re not familiar, ORIGAMI is the Japanese art of PAPER FOLDING. ORI means “folding”, and KAMI means “paper”. There are some basic moves that one makes, and from there the magic unFOLDS. As I said earlier, I tried ORIGAMI once, but I just couldn’t ROCK the PAPER. I even bought a few BONE FOLDERS, but it was all in CRANE…There was just no AURA-GAMI for me, it was more of a CHORE-IGAMI, or NOR-IGAMI, or BORE-IGAMI…(Oh, sorry)…so I just threw in the TROWEL. Please…I still have trouble with FOLDing fitted sheets. Those rounded CORNERS? My blood pressure inCREASES and my spirits SINK…Anyway, let’s move on to the eye candy, and see what UNFOLDS. Right off the BATik, my eye automatically went to the name of the BUSINESS etched on the window. It’s a very clever name, Jeff, Kudos! “FOUR CORNERS”…PAPER! I love it! ( Uh, literally though? Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico…should I STATE that)?But…”ORAGAMI”? OR A kidding me? Someone’s “I” should have caught that. Or was it done purPOSEly, to see if we’d catch it? Hmm. The mystery inCREASES! Jeff’s showing us two woman, lamenting the loss of the company. He’s drawn beautifully detailed ORIGAMI figures: a CRANE, the traditionally best known model, with a tiny price tag dangling from it, and a BIRD of some sort hanging in the window. There’s a Dog, a Dinosaur and a 5-pointed Star on the woman’s tray. Both woman are wearing pins, which I believe to be the traditional Ninja Star. The woman seated has bow-type earrings, and a flower on her hat. There’s an airplane on the desk, above various bins which are filled with PAPER. But I think I’ll FOURgo it all and go with the Credit Card Terminal on the desk. I’m just getting a better READ from it! So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone!   4. How about half of a blind solve? Had folded, but didn’t come up with business since I read the final word in the clue as “they” instead of “the”. Oh well, may not have made a difference anyway! Agree with Mike in DOUSE and EMBODY.

    • John, while eating dinner last night, it dawned on me that your sentence was a brilliant pun sounding like 2 different scenarios at the same time. With “pens” it sounded like an academic classroom but as a pun you wanted us Jumblers to put down our “straight pins” and “show” our clothing creations such as the one in the
      Jumble cartoon!! DUH! You did a great job. I was just dense.

  5. The new recruit wanted to EMBODY all the virtues of the seasoned veterans in the fire department and did not FLINCH when sent to DOUSE flames but had to work on being less MESSY in the fire hall.
    Words and solution were not difficult—looking at the cartoon and knowing that “folding” is involved in origami, the solution did not need me MESSing around with various possibilities. Clever play on words with the two definitions of FOLD.
    Thanks for the details Mike—I refuse to buy a paper any more—they raised the news stand price by $.50 this week, so no more. One web site I go to first had yesterday’s puzzle again this AM and so I went to my back up place–not my favourite.. And no e-mail today. Must be karma is giving me a message???
    Angela, always appreciate your absolutely amazing aptitude and attempts to amuse—and you almost always succeed. But one thing in your post puzzled me—batik? What am I missing? Batik is south-east Asian, I think? Help, hope I am not being too “teacher-like”
    Gloomy and snowy up here and this seems especially depressing after two days in the high 60s and one day of 70. Oh well, it is still February.
    Happy Birthday George Washington. Still not happy that his birthday and Lincoln’s are lumped together but I understand the rational. Have a great day everyone.

    • Good Morning, Earl. You could never be too “teacher like”. I’m a staunch believer in Einstein’s quote, “Once you stop learning, you start dying”….So here’s a little learning I found…And there’s videos on YouTube also, but I don’t deem them necessary…Loved your sentence, good imagery.

      • Thanks for adding to my knowledge of “batik”. I was under the impression that it just referred to dyed cloth, especially in the islands of southern Asia. Now I know there is paper batik or batik paper not sure which is correct?

        • Glad to pass along the info, Earl. I think the word jumped out at you because it looks so odd BATik. It’s the k as a final letter maybe..In my head I was forming the intro to the misspelling, and when “Right off the bat” came to mind, I just LOL thinking BATik instead. You know me, I’ll pun till I’m done! Ad nauseam! 😂 TBT, I’m not even sure how I remembered it. I only dabbled with Origami, a few years ago…what I said about my fingernails is true. Way too long to make those folds…Anyway, I think we all have a ton of information hidden deep down in the abyss!     • Newspapers are having a difficult time, Earl. I understand they need to be profitable to stay in business and price increases are difficult to absorb. The ONLY reason I subscribe is to support David & Jeff and the Jumble. Most of the information printed is too opinionated for me (at least my paper is) and I’m not a fan of someone telling me how I should think. I only read the sports and comics/games section and promptly recycle the rest.

      Now that I’m off my soapbox, you had some tough material to work with today. It was a long sentence but you managed to pull it off!

      Sorry about the email not coming your way. WordPress was buggy for me this morning and I didn’t even get my own email! I have a few thoughts as to why but I’ll spare you from the boring intricacies of blogging.

      It is George Washington’s birthday, but it’s also my son’s! He officially turns 10 today and I can’t believe how time goes by so quickly.

      • Thanks Mike, I try to keep the sentences brief but to make some kind of sense in using the clue words, today brevity had to go.
        I understand newspapers have to make money but they also have a responsibility to inform and it seems they are not meeting that need. I love the printed word and cannot imagine a culture where it no longer exists but have doubts about the future. Holding a newspaper in my hands, writing out answers to puzzles, and reading not only headlines but in-depth articles has been part of my daily life. Doing some or all of those things on an iPad or desktop is not the same. 📝 📰 🗞 😟

  6. Good morning. Again I had to get into today’s Jumble using yesterday’s. Mike since I do not see that word very often and my spelling is average (I hope) I didn’t realize it was spelled wrong. In fact I googled origami to find out information about it. When I’m done with this I’ll have to double check to see it it corrected my spelling. Reading it gave me the last word which was folded. From there I was able to get Business. As for the words,the only one for me to get instantly was Messy. All the others took a second longer look. All and all a fun day. Mike between you Angela and Earl, you guys are as good as any three in any line up. Look forward to seeing all every day. Until tomorrow take care.

I have an idea that might work better tomorrow and I apologize for the inconvenience.       I truly think that the spelling was incorrect on purpose as it played so well into the business doing poorly. At least that’s my hope!

  7. Hi – After spending an hour solving the puzzle yesterday, I was happy to have a very easy time today. I always like it when I see peace cranes but only now read the touching story about Sadako and the thousand peace cranes on Wikipedia.

      • I’m glad you liked it, Mike. As for newspapers, you’re right they are struggling with loss of advertising and readers, especially the young, as well as print costs. But, like Earl, I would miss them if they fold, and I think they are needed to keep an eye on what’s going on. I also don’t like it if the news is not presented fairly, though I think it’s OK to have opinions on the editorial pages.

        • I’d miss the newspapers if they were gone too, Caroline. There’s nothing more I look forward to in the morning than doing the Jumble, Cryptoquip and crossword puzzle with my pen in hand. For me, the stories that are published are often times outdated even before the paper lands on my doorstep. It’s just easier for me to flip on my iPad when I feel the urge to catch up with what’s going on. I agree with all of your points and will continue to subscribe just so I can have my printed Jumble every day. I do clip all of the Jumbles to save them so I can look back at the ones that I enjoyed the most. That would be hard to do with the digital version! 😊

  8. Hi all – The whole puzzle just immediately UNFOLDED for me today. I’ll remember that when I get stuck on another day.

    Nice subject to have during the week of celebrations of Lunar New Year, a big deal around here. But Mike, maybe you’re on to something. Maybe between the misspelling of origami and the Chinese restaurant font for a Japanese artform, they managed to offend both cultures and had to fold.

    Angela, it must have been frustrating to not be able to ROCK the PAPER while being prohibited from using SCISSORS. And paper dolly – do we have Helen O’Connell on the brain again? 😉

        There are certainly a wide variety of materials from which a dolly can be fashioned, as I have learned from The Antiques Roadshow and other sources.

        • Hey. The Ink Spots CUT the song a good 10+ years later. It was all the Mills Brothers, early 40’s. Sweet and mellow. Sinatra (BMH) recorded it too, but even him, no comparison. Dolls? Mass marketing, mass materials…Dolls will never go out of “style”…🙋🏻

  9. Hi, all! I solved the cartoon answer and then all 4 words immediately. I was not rushing because when I do, I make mistakes. My time, if I had timed it, would have been in seconds, less than a minute. If you think it sounds like I’m bragging, you are totally correct! I don’t remember ever solving this fast before, but you know that pride goes before a fall, so tomorrow I will probably have a Friday 4-hour solve. We’ll see.

    I have spent many an hour practicing origami. Perfected a couple of things, which were so simple they impressed only my very young grandchildren and 3rd grade students, whom I taught how to make them.
