CARTOON ANSWER:

WHEN TEACHING HER KIDS ABOUT THE MARIANA TRENCH, SHE GAVE THEM THE – – –

OLWNOWD = LOWDOWN

Good Tuesday morning, Jumble friends! David chose some rather interesting words to Jumble today, with one of them leaving me rather perplexed.

KOALA has given me some trouble in the past, and the last time we saw it was on 12/21/17 where it was actually part of the surprise answer. WOVEN and TOWARD were both jumbled well but instantly visible and not much of a challenge. REDEYE took the longest to decipher with it’s three E’s masterfully grouped together. REDEYE is often used to describe a long or overnight flight, or when someoneโ€™s eyes appear red in a color photograph taken with a flash. The problem with this word is that it should actually contain a hyphen for it to be spelled correctly. A quick search in the Merriam-Webster dictionary also shows it containing a hyphen so David made a tiny error that didn’t have any significant impact on the puzzle itself.

The setting for Jeff’s cartoon is a classroom where we see a teacher pointing to a picture on a smart board. Reading the dialogue we learn that she is introducing her students to the Mariana Trench which is the deepest point on earth. She shows them that if Mount Everest was placed at the bottom of the trench it would still be covered by 2,246 meters of water. This example elicits a response from one of the students and he exclaims “Wow! That’s deep!” proving that he’s grasping the material being taught to him.

The surprise answer was only 7-letters long and wasn’t much of a challenge after looking at the clue letter layout. LOW and DOWN were both grouped together leading me to an instant solve. Have a terrific Tuesday everyone, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. Good Morning, Mike. Great post. So warm out, right? Our temps are no where as LOW as they should be for February…Hope you have a great day! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • ๐ŸŽถAfter all this time after all these seasons…After your one decision to go to the WATER for reason…Now it’s only the OCEAN and you, and all these lines will all be erased soon….They go out with the TIDE, then come back with the waves…It’s only the OCEAN and you…๐ŸŽถ “Only the Ocean” -Jack Johnson 2010 https://tinyurl.com/y7p87jvv

๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠA while ago one of the kids was learning about this
And I remember thinking…Is this something that I missed?
The Mariana Trench didn’t immediately ring a bell
It wasn’t WOVEN through my mind, as far as I could tell…
So leafing through his textbook, past KOALAs and the like
I headed TOWARD the chapter for it with my little tyke.
It proved to be quite interesting, I stayed and read much more
Than I had planned originally, and my REDEYEs grew quite sore…
But whether it’s a topic that has less or great renown
I now have much more knowledge, I have the whole LOWDOWN! ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠ

So, REDEYE. One word or two? Or hyphenated? Caused a little REDEYE? I’m sure it’ll be a TOPic of discussion today. Looking it up, one dictionary had the hyphen, the other didn’t. So maybe we’re just going to have to SLEEP on it! The other words? We’ve been DOWN the road with them before, so not much PRESSURE there. And we’ve seen KOALA as recently as two months ago, on 12/21.. But, TOWARD was anagrammed quite well!

Our cartoon…Jeff takes us back to school today…We have been getting quite an EDUCATION lately, don’t you think? We see a teacher, describing the MARIANA TRENCH to three children. As I stated ABOVE, I’m not sure I remember learning about this. But it is interesting…And, this fact especially PEAKED my interest…While thousands of climbers have successfully scaled Mount Everest, the HIGHest point on Earth, only two people have descended to the planetโ€™s DEEPest point, the Challenger DEEP in the Pacific Oceanโ€™s MARIANA TRENCH! Wow! WATER you LOW! So, our smart board shows how DEEP the Trench is, our little student all wide-eyed and shocked exCLAIMS how DEEP the Trench is, our question asks what the teacher gave them…LOW and behold!…She gave them The LOWDOWN! Good one, Dave…you never let us DOWN! Ok, eye candy. Not much to SEA today, so I’m going with what I “hear”. The little boy saying, “Wow, that’s DEEP”. I laughed out loud, because we got another little play on words right there! I thought that was very clever, Jeff, good one! You DREW me right in!

So, There you have it Folks, Done! Have a great day, Everyone! And I was thinking…If I had never heard about the MARIANA TRENCH before today…and this helped me get to the BOTTOM of it? BUOY! SEA how much we can LEARN just by doing the Jumble? It SHORE is something! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Seeing that there was no hyphen in REDEYE reminded me of how often people incorrectly spell Spider-Man as Spiderman. Great punny post! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

        • I saw the word immediately, and I knew it was going to open a can of worms. It’s one of those “iffy” words, with and without. I think there’ll be some talk about it for sure.
Spider-Man! LOL..I know that’s a thorn in your side! First time I typed Spider-Man to you, you gave me a thumbs up…and I wasn’t sure why! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Those who know, know!
Thanks for the shout out, Bud! Enjoy your day! ๐Ÿ•ท๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Looking at the surprise answer again, one could easily make the mistake of writing it as โ€œdownlowโ€. A hyphen would be needed for it to be correct but the dialogue does support it. Sheโ€™s telling them a secret not many people know. The views for this puzzle are crazy high for a Tuesday! ๐Ÿ™‚

            • Good point,,but the “lowdown” has always been associated with “getting the inside story”. As far as I’ve always known anyway. And I’ve seen the numbers so far today…Definitely nothing LOW about them! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Good morning, Angela! Our tv weather person said that this weather is very normal for February. Cloudy, overcast and damp here right now but tomorrow should easily hit 70 with partly sunny skies. Iโ€™m not complaining one bit. ๐Ÿ˜Š

      • I’m starting to think no weather pattern is “normal” anymore. Same thing here, cloudy, and extremely foggy this morning. We ran to the store, and couldn’t see to the nearest corner. And we had rain, too. With 70’s coming trow and Thursday…? IDK, Is this normal? ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Hey Mike, remember when you got one of our earthquakes I suggested you import our weather? Our high temps this week will be mid 50โ€™s with lows in the upper 30โ€™s while you hit 70. No need to thank me; you guys all deserve a break after freezing for so long. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  2. Good morning. Thank you Mike and Angela for your input. I didn’t know about Mariana Trench either. But then again the longer I’m here on earth the more I find out I don’t know. Like Schultz on Hogans Heros ,”l know nothing.” Even though we had Koala before that was the one that took the longest for me. Looking at the seven letters the cartoon answer was a breeze. David continues to give us satisfaction on the final answer. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • The Jumble always teaches me new things as well, Paul! I must admit that I dive deeper into each puzzle than the average person does, but I always come away with some KOALA-ty knowledge. Hereโ€™s a fun fact that I was going to throw in but it just didnโ€™t fit:

The Marianas Trench Marine National Monument is a United States National Monument created by President George W. Bush by the presidential proclamation no. 8335 on January 6, 2009.

Have a great day, my friend! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    • Hi Paul, Good Morning! LOL…Schultz! “I see nothing, I hear nothing, I say nothing…and I KNOW nothing”! Definitely got him through the war!
Schultz, (saluting Hogan) “Jawohl, mein Colonel”. Klink: “Schultz, you idiot! You don’t salute him, he’s your prisoner…And see that it stays that way”!! ROTFL…
Thanks for the shout out, Brooklyn! …Brooklyn…Where we all learned about being “in the trenches”!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Have a good one, Bud! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. It was another Monday puzzle until the very end. Had a blind solve and cruised through the first three words, then, what the what!? Even with the backdoor D, I still had to work for REDEYE!!

  4. Redeye definitely left me seeing red. Like John, I had the whole puzzle solved and knowing I only needed the “D” was still stumped as I too questioned the spelling of red-eye. You East Coasters must have sent the cold weather our way. It was something like 46 degrees in S.F. This morning which is positively long underwear weather for us. Steve, I saw on last night’s newscast that you had snow in Oakland?? Really?

    • Hi Betty – I didnโ€™t see that, but we had a few minutes of rain between 4 and 4:30 PM yesterday and I saw that it included hail for some places. They did say there was a chance of snow on the hilltops but nothing down here. When I worked graveyard up at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab for awhile, I did occasionally see a light dusting of snow when getting off work in the morning, maybe twice (and deer munching snow-covered leaves for a nice frozen dessert!)

      • Just heard on the radio that it was 30 degrees at the Oakland Airport this morning. Yike! Stay warm.

  5. Redeye was definitely problematic.W the 3 e’s I saw eye but couldn’t put eye and red together right away.Given the redeye solution ,lowdown came easily.

  6. Hi all – TOWARD took an extra look, then even though I saw EYE as likely, still took a minute for REDEYE. Had to remove the EYEDER-down from my brain first.

Learning all kinds of stuff today. I have always heard it called the โ€œMarianas Trenchโ€, but learned theyโ€™re both correct.

From the depth labels, we seem to have once again decamped to Canada, perhaps Toronto, where the temperature today will be about the same as in Oakland, 11ยฐ – Celsius! – with the obligatory โ€œWhat ever happened to Centigrade?โ€

๐ŸŽตโ€Hey son, better get back on to town
Face the sad old truth, the dirty LOWDOWNโ€œ๐ŸŽต

Enjoy your temperatures and elevations, whatever they are!
