These struggling musicians feel a quintet sounds just right.
The WRINGing of the hands will stop, the worries will be few
Together they can find success, some money they’ll accrue…
As TENANTs now they scrimp and save to come up with their rent,
Now hopefully the tide will turn and money can be spent.
No longer unsuccessful, no longer left BEHIND
This new arrangement will play out and happiness they’ll find.
So what was two and what was three, now five will be much better…
And what we’ll have is a new group, as they now BAND TOGETHER! 🎻🎸
Our words today are all old favorites, with maybe just TENANT putting a little RENT in your armor. Our cartoon: Jeff takes us to the streets of Waikiki, Hawaii, where we see five struggling musicians trying to make a few dollars. They dream of migrating to the mainland…And one day, in 1986, they decide to fly to Los Angeles, and then move on to Austin, Texas. And the rest is history, as they say…So, deciding to take a chance like them, I’m going to do my best to try and name these people here. And Jeff? Be kind…I haven’t worked this hard since…I can’t even remember when I worked this hard…And for free besides! Ok…Here goes: Left to right: Susan Voelz, playing violin/fiddle. Frank Orrall, (founder), guitar. Ted Cho, mandolin/ukulele. Paul Martens, or John Nelson, percussion, and Dave Crawford, accordion. TOGETHER, they form the POI DOG PONDERING band, a favorite of Jeff’s. And, as a quintet, they hoped they’d make beautiful music TOGETHER! So, our question asks what would they do to become successful? BAND TOGETHER! Drop the mic, we got ourselves a HIT! Good one, Dave! Ok, eye candy. Now here, once again, Jeff’s given us the plethora of details we’ve come to know and love…They’re amazing! The mountains and palm trees at the left background…Way up on top right, his signature sinking sailboat, so, so tiny…And the quintet’s got me ROCKING! Susan’s barefoot, as is Paul/John. Frank has a big red heart on his shirt. The accordion has that tiny POI logo...Paul/John’s toes are curled upwards, as he rests them on the drum stand, and Dave’s legs are adorably hairy…But the winner today is the guitar case opened at Frank’s feet…Inside are coins and bills..the signs of struggling musicians…That brought it all home to the mainland for me! So, There you have it, Folks…Done! Have a great day, Everyone!
And just so you know, “POI DOG” means “mutt” in pidgin Hawaiian. PONDERING just means…Pondering. What’s in a name? In this case? Success…🎸🙋🏻

When the TENANT was way BEHIND in his rent he decided to ELOPE with his landlord’s daughter and knew mom would WRING her hands in disgust.
No problem with the clue words, except when I wrote down the circled letters I somehow added an extra N in tenant and was flummoxed in trying to solve the puzzle. After several head-shaking attempts, I went back to double check the letters. Found my mistake and the solution was evident.
Thanks for the details on the POI DOG band—had no idea about them and always stand in awe of your knowledge of the Jumble Makers’ background and why the carton is drawn the way it is. For some reason, the name of the band reminds me of the song that includes the lyrics: “meaner than a junkyard dog.” So I’ll be humming that for some time.

As I mentioned above, I worked overtime this morning! 😂 But I have known about the Poi Dog band for some time, and this isn’t the first time Jeff’s showcased them. Hope you enjoy the lyrics. Good morning. Nice job and thanks for all that information. I had no idea the drawing was based on real people. Earl,you fit those words in beautifully.. Almost like you knew somebody who did that. Today’s words were first glances with Wring being a double take. The cartoon was solved fairly quick but had to use the letters to do so. All this week the cartoon answers have been excellent. I made Alaskan King Crab legs last night, and I must confess…Mea culpa, but I didn’t leave the table hungry. Thought about what we’d spoken about, but those crabs just CLAWED their way into me! Angela,I’ve also been thinking about bacon all day today. In the Navy especially in Guantánamo on Sunday you were able to get the eggs how you want them and with either steak or bacon. I always took the bacon and went back for seconds. Love crab legs but it’s such a lot of work to eat them. At special dinners one of the bosses wife would peel the shrimp for him. Did we tease the heck out of him.
Hey Paul, we can have bacon today, can’t we? I hope so, because you know I had it for breakfast! Happens to me every time…As soon as it’s in my head that I can’t have it, I get like Pavlov’s dog! LOL…I could live on bacon if it wouldn’t kill me! I have my parents old nutcrackers (with the springs) that we use to crack the shells, and the little picks that go together with them to dig out whatever isn’t removed in one full piece. They must be a gazillion years old, but my Mother kept them in pristine condition. They work perfectly with the crab legs. TBT, like your bosses wife, my friend did all the “dirty work” for me last night…Those things pinch! LOL…I don’t mind peeling shrimp, but he’s much better at wrestling with the crab legs! And now it’s like the little bells ringing again….I’m getting hungry! Hang in there, Brooklyn! 🦀 🙋🏻

Hi, all! I solved the words first again today with only TENANT giving me a pause because of my lack of confidence in my ability to spell words correctly without looking them up for a quick check.
With all those letters for the answer, I used the technique that Mike has taught us many times, to look for the short words first. The first 4-letter word I came up with was BAND, which immediately gave me TOGETHER. Done/finished!!
Yesterday Joyce popped over to go to lunch with me, was delighted to go with me to get the new toaster oven because of having noticed that ours looked burned on the inside, and stayed at our house to play games until bedtime.
Then Jessica, 3rd grandchild, called to say that she wanted the whole family together today to hear some great news she had to tell us. After many emails, we finally had an agreement on 4 p.m. today, so I made reservations at Top Shelf. Having fun, staying busy. See ya’!

Loved hearing about your grandfather & the 2 older women. Jerry had old ladies who would call him, an electrician!!, when all he had to do was turn on a switch. He knew they were on fixed income so went on those expensive service-calls free.

Actually, my grandfather was more of a handyman than electrician although he did manage not to electrocute himself. He did mostly radios and vacuum cleaners, disassembling, replacing parts and fuses, cleaning them up, etc. He had a small workshop that’s among my earliest memories. When I was no more than 4 or 5, he tried to convince me that there was a little man inside the buffing-wheel machine to run the wheels, going so far as to pretend to feed him little pieces of turkey one Thanksgiving. And I remember him in the classic grandparent activity, literally bouncing me on his knee.
How can you have the legs without the hair? Simply the LONG and SHORT of it! 😂
This morning a NUMBER of songs were BANDying about through my mind, Mutt led me to Leroy, etc, but maybe a Poi DOG song would have been fitting…and now that I think of it, I used one last time Jeff had them APPEARING. Shaving, Nair, & Waxing are good for removing leg hair, but Jerry had a different method for ridding himself of eyelashes & a few eyebrow hairs while lighting the gas stove in our camper.
… not quite that bad, but a similar experience trying to light a gas heater in a cabin where the exhaust pipe was clogged with snow.
