Happy Thursday, Jumble friends! Mr. Hoyt stepped up the game with his clue word choices this morning. STUNG and HALVE were both on the easier side and didn’t take any effort to figure out. I did pause for a short period of time on EMBARK after first trying to make a couple of words with the consonants. GYPSUM by far was the most challenging of the quartet, taking several self-jumbles to figure out. It appears to be a new word after a quick search showed that it hasn’t appeared in a Jumble puzzle over the past few years. After seeing the anagram consisting of two correctly spelled words (GUM & SPY) all I could think of was GUMSHOE which means detective.

Jeff has really taken us on an emotional roller coaster with his drawings this week. Tuesday’s cartoon was about a couple separating and Wednesday’s was a romantic Valentine’s encounter. Today we find ourselves in Memphis with a small group of characters gathered outside of B.B. Kings Blues Club remembering and honoring the life of “The King of the Blues”.

Not being into music all that much, I did a quick search of the dialogue that the man with the guitar was saying and found out that it was the title of one of Mr. King’s greatest hits entitled “The Thrill is Gone“. The last bit of dialogue between the man and the woman didn’t give any hints to the surprise answer and was meant as a somber reminder that even though he’s passed away, his music will always live on for his fans to enjoy.

There were two superb details in this panel that are barely visible in the newspaper version. They are both located on the sides of the man playing the guitar and I’ve included them down below so you can enjoy them in their larger size.

The final solve wasn’t overly difficult and was surprisingly much easier for me to figure out than GYPSUM was. The letter layout was wonderfully cryptic and didn’t give anything away, but the cartoon gave me all the information that I needed. BLUES was my first guess leaving THE and SANG for a quick finish.

      Seriously, glad you’re ok. We joke about not counting anything under 4.0, but that doesn’t mean it’s not scary while it’s happening.

      • I spoke with my son after school and he didn’t feel or hear a thing. And the school is less than a half mile from our home! Thanks for your kind words, Steve. It was definitely intense.

    The name of BB King to mind…and I can hear him sing
    “The Thrill is Gone”, what a great song, I listen all the time
    I like the blues, I like the strings, it’s cadence and it’s rhyme.
    We see some fans in mourning, after BB passed away…
    They’ve gathered and they’re listening to someone as he plays
    There’s flowers brought in tribute, did GYPSUM help them grow?
    (Believe me I dislike the line…but that word had to go…)
    The crowd consists of six people, HALVE women, and halve men
    All STUNG with realization that the King of Blues has been…
    So EMBARKed on a road trip to the club where he held sway
    They’re hoping camaraderie can somehow help allay…
    The sadness that they’re feeling, after they all heard the news…
    That BB’s voice was silenced. And now they SANG THE BLUES.🎸🎸

    Phew! That was no easy task to atTUNE. Almost had me crying the BLUES! GYPSUM? Had no trouble guessing the word, but working it into a rhyme? I just wanted to leave it aLAWN…But I diGRASS…I’ll just say great words today, and PUT it TO REST…As we did BB’s voice. Today Jeff transports us to Nashville, TN. It could be Memphis, but I’ve been to the one in Nashville, so I’m partial. Fans are gathered outside BB’s club, listening to a guitarist play “The Thrill is Gone”, his signature song. We see some floral ARRANGEMENTS, one in the shape of BB’s guitar, his beloved LUCILLE. The banners read “Rest in Peace”. The “King of Blues”, Riley B King, (who passed away on May 14, 2015), was first known as the Beale Street Blues Boy, then the Blues Boy, and finally just BB. All “The Blues”…and our question asks what did his fans do…they SANG THE BLUES. Good play on words, Dave. You’ve STRUCK a CHORD! Ok, eye candy…The guitarist has that soul patch Jeff seems to favor. The man and woman in the background are shown open-mouthed singing…She holds a single flower, he’s holding what looks like a wreath. There’s four floral ARRANGEMENTS in total, but they’re very hard to see in the newspaper, since they’re all darkened in gray. The one furthest left is adorned with two MUSICAL NOTES. But way to the left of the panel, is a tiny flower pot with two buds, and right next to it is a frame, picturing BB playing his LUCILLE. It’s drawn so well, that you can actually see the easel back stand. Great detail, Jeff. That’s the eye candy today. A PICTURES worth a thousand WORDS…So, There you have it, Folks, Done.

  4. Saw the late B.B. King in 2011, his last show in Spokane. At 85 he still handled Lucille deftly and his voice was as seductive and soothing as ever.

    Today’s CWs had me stumped on embark, with a pause on gypsum. The puzzle was a quick solve with the letters.

  5. Just read the comments. Holy Moly on the earthquake, Mike! Spent 15 years in Oakland and was there for the big one in ‘89. They ARE terrifying and will keep your nerves on edge for quite a while. Hope all is well, Mike.

  6. Because he had been STUNG on the last GYPSUM purchase, he wanted to EMBARK on a way to HALVE the price on the next.
    Mike thanks for the details in the cartoon and Angela great post as usual and I’m sure that GYPSUM has a rhyme somewhere in gymnasium or bubble gum or….
    Apparently the earthquake disturbed the e-mail–didn’t get one today but it is relatively easily overcome with the “next” button on the comment page from yesterday’s post.

      My heart aches with all this senseless violence. So many young lives shattered. Those taken, and all the “Walking Wounded” of the aftermath. It’s all so sad…Be well, Kind Sir. 💔🙋🏻

    • Hi Chuck, Today was one of those “gift” puzzles, as far as the solution went. Especially that Jeff showed two of the fans singing! And gypsum isn’t a word you see every day…See you t’row! 🎸🙋🏻

  9. Good morning. Mike,great extras and glad your OK from a frightening experience. Angela,one can only say that you come through day in and day out. Earl,your a master of the words. Today’s puzzle was a real challenge. Had a long pause on embark and was stuck on the last word so I decided to put up laundry. All of a sudden Gupsum popped into my head so it was back upstairs to get the cartoon. Knowing his type of music the answer came fairly quick. The cartoon answers have been excellent lately. Angela,yesterday’s last remark will be answered on that. Today’s was obtained via the calendar. Until tomorrow stay well.

  10. Challenge today with embark giving me the most trouble. Believe it has stumped me before. Gypsum gave me pause as well but was able to figure out the cartoon answer without problems. Sorry about the earthquake, Mike. As you know, I live in San Franicisco. My grandparents survived the Big Quake in 1906 (7.8 for 25 seconds) & we survived the 1989 one (6.9 for 15 seconds) I live in the Marina District neighborhood. Many of the apartment buildings collapsed and we were evacuated from our home because of the fire which was licking across our neighbor’s back fence as we left.. It was a surreal experience and one which I don’t wish on anyone.. Earthquakes are very disconcerting to say the least. I didn’t know you had earthquakes in New Hampshire. Hope it won’t be a regular occurrence.

    • Wow, Betty! That is such a horrible experience and I can’t even begin to imagine what you went through. We’ve had tiny ones over the years where the house shook for just a few seconds. This one had a huge BANG at the end like a stick of dynamite went off! Do you recall a loud bang? I ran down to the basement because I thought my boiler blew up at first. 😮

      • Hi Mike, I don’t recall a large bang. The odd thing about earthquakes is that there is no particular pattern in my experience. Sometimes they are just a rolling motion and other times they present as a large jolt. The one in 1989 started as a rolling motion but picked up very quickly in intensity. It was as if a Giant had a hold on the house and was shaking it back and forth violently. It knocked both my husband & I to the floor and though it only lasted for 15 seconds, it seemed like forever. So hopefully the faults in your area were just readjusting their position and will remain dormant now. Take care.

        • Betty and Mike, I was just going to to say that – they vary. I have had one that started with a bang and was over quickly. Sometimes they change from one type to another. I once heard car alarms going off and getting closer as the wave approached. In the 1989 (World Series) quake, my wife was driving home and suddenly found herself two lanes over from where she started, not quite realizing what had happened at first. If there had been more traffic, it could have been worse.

  11. Hi all – I got GYPSUM because we have to use it in our heavy clay-based soil here. EMBARK took the longest.

    Good research Mike, yes BB and his beloved guitar Lucille. His career and those of many other bluesmen were saved from falling into obscurity by the British Invasion, particularly Eric Clapton and also The Rolling Stones, who “gave America its blues back.” Classic Delta blues was considered old-fashioned and was about to be eclipsed by “smooth”, “urban” or progressive Jazz until the Brits said “Oh no you don’t” and America’s kids agreed. There are several clips of BB and Clapton playing together, and the mutual respect is so obvious and wonderful to see.

    • Steve…I was lucky enough to see King perform. And we saw Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival that he does every few years for the drug rehab, at the Garden a few years ago. BB King amidst an insane gathering of talent. Keith Richards, Allman Bros, John Mayer…Too many to even remember. Look it up, it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen….🎶🙋🏻

  12. MIKE!! My sympathy is with you & your family for your earthquake nightmare, but I am glad that all of you are unharmed! I can’t relate because the biggest ones I felt in southwestern Arizona were 3 seconds of rattling a few dishes in the cupboard. Yours sounds horrible!! I hope that never happens again in NH!

    What a wonderful Jumble in the genre of music. My Jumble report is seriously late because Jerry was ready to go to Costco for 100 lbs of bird food when I woke up, and I needed some household stuff. Also, it took me one hour to solve EMBARK & HALVE. I got GYPSUM quickly because we were rock hounds for years.

    Well, with 100 pounds of bird food, we’ll be ready for March 20, first day of spring, if that “red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along.”

As you know I really enjoy our feathered friends as well, and they’ve been staying plump with all of the delicious sunflower seeds that we’ve kept stocked in the feeders during this brutally cold winter. I’ll be sure to let you know when I see my first robin!!! It should be within the next few weeks with any luck. 😊😊😊
