LDAAS = SALAD

PUTIL = TULIP

COSTEK = SOCKET

SIFLOS = FOSSIL

CARTOON ANSWER:

THE MAGAZINE’S EMPLOYEES DIDN’T WORK WELL TOGETHER AND HAD – – –

SLATUISOEFOS = A LOT OF ISSUES

Good Thursday morning everyone! The first two clue words were no trouble at all and were instantly visible at first glance. Out of the remaining two anagrams, SOCKET took a few extra seconds of staring at it before it came into view while FOSSIL jumped right out at me. With the clue words out of the way, I was now ready for the intriguing cartoon that caught my eye the moment I opened the comics section of my paper this morning.

Before going wild and explaining all of the intricate detail in this piece, I must mention (before I forget) that it was an instant blind solve for me. The layout was in a 1-3-2-6 format making A or I the obvious first word. I went with A as it made the cartoon sentence flow naturally. Noticing all of the magazine covers, which I’ll talk about in a moment, ISSUES came to mind leaving me to figure out if the 3-letter spot was TON or LOT. There wasn’t a single “N” in the clue words so I deduced that LOT would be the logical choice.

Now the main event, and my favorite part of the Jumble, Jeff’s cartoon! Seated at a desk is a man who is noticeably older than the other two characters. He exercises his position of authority by pointing his finger while exclaiming “You two need to work things out.” Reading the dialogue between the bickering employees, it’s evident that they both think their cover is the better choice for the magazine. Although every character has their hand partially covering the name of the magazine, MADLY can be figured out. Jeff is a big fan of MAD magazine (which is surprisingly still in print) and he tellโ€™s us in todayโ€™s comments that theย setting for this panel is in the office of Editor Bill Morrison.

The fictitious character and mascot on almost every issue of MAD magazine is Alfred E. Neuman. For this cartoon, Jumble artist Jeff Knurek swaps places and taglines with him from “What? Me worry?” to “What? Me Jumble?”

My final observation is the little head on the desk. Although we can’t see the face, the classic jug ears are a distinctive feature of Alfred’s head leading me to believe that Jeff added it as a touching tribute to the character and magazine that means so much to him.

Have a terrific Thursday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

*Edited on 01/25/2018 to correct the name of MAD Magazine editor from Al Feldstein to Bill Morrison.

  1. ๐ŸŽถHere’s a little song I wrote, you might want to sing it note for note “Don’t WORRY, be happy. In every life we have some trouble, but when you WORRY you make it double…Don’t WORRY, be happy…Don’t WORRY, be happy now…๐ŸŽถ

๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ—ž “Oh I love you Madly” may be the battle cry today…
In life we all love differently, we’re not all the same way.
Some favor more the humor, the lighter side of things
While others are more serious, and quiet’s what they bring.
Like SALAD with just lettuce where nothing more is mixed,
FOSSILs in life are set in ways and all the rest is nixed.
There’s black and white in everything, opinions all we own,
Some SOCKET to you straight-faced, instead of with a groan…
But just as TULIPs wither when the weather becomes cold
Opinions also vary, we have meek and we have bold.
So if love makes the world go round, suffice enough to say,
Just like the two in our cartoon, there’s always different ways…
I love the Jumble madly, but all it takes me is one look
I’ve been this way for all my life…one look is all it took.
Without a need for pondering, instead I go for glee,
    I turn a phrase, I make a pun…and that is what you’ll see.
Like life, we laugh and then we cry into our crumbled tissues…
And just like life there’ll always be those with A LOT OF ISSUES ๐Ÿ—ž๐Ÿ˜€

MADly, Truly, Deeply… If you think my poem is longer than usual today…Wait till you get a look at this! Anyway, since it is, I’ll not add anything EDITIONal about the WORDS, and just SET MY TYPE for the cartoon. I’m pretty sure that Jeff’s friend, the comedian and magician, Mac King, is shown as our FEATUREd guest today. He’s the EDITOR of a fictional publication, which appears to be MADLY, a take on the iconic MAD Magazine. A few background PAGES …Founded in 1952, as a comic book first, MAD was headquartered at 485 MADison Avenue, NYC. Hence, MAD MAG. It gave all new meaning to satire, and brought lampooning to its greatest heights. Throughout the years, it’s had numerous EDITORS and ILLUSTRATORS. You know what, Folks? Google it. If you’re anything like me, and you SUBSCRIBE to a world of wit, and exceptional tongue in cheek, you’ll have a good READ. So, back to the ISSUE at hand. Mac’s wife, Jennifer Sils, is shown as an illustrator, along with another gentleman. They’re arguing over the Magazine’s cover. MAD magazine was noted for its catch phrase, “What, me worry”?, and here Jeff’s chosen, “What, me Jumble”? Clever. Jeff seems to have taken on the role of Alfred E. Neuman, the mascot and COVER boy of MAD MAG; who appears on each ISSUE, with his silly grin and devil may care attitude. With a nod towards President’s Day, Jennifer has portrayed Jeff, I mean Jeff has portrayed Jeff as George Washington. The other illustrator has portrayed Jeff as Elvis. Jennifer feels he’s not serious enough, he feels she’s no fun. Mac’s telling them to work things out…It’s a MAGAZINE, with bi-monthly ISSUES…Our question..The employees had…A LOT OF ISSUES. STOP THE PRESSES! We have our COVER! Good one, Dave. And now…the EYE CANDY! I’m PRINTING it in all caps, because today, Jeff has not only pushed the envelope, he’s ADDRESSed it and MAILed it out! We got ourselves a PAGE turner here, Folks! Here goes: There’s the palm trees in the background, and on Mac’s shirt, which is blue. YELLOW, Jeff? What’d ya thINK? If it was up to you, perhaps another color would have been more entertRAINing? Oh WELL…CONTINUEing..Mac’s comedy show is based in Las Vegas, so I guess we’re there. HARRAH! It is a MAGICal place. There’s Elvis with a newspaper and pencil in hand, most likely doing the Jumble. He’s wearing a belt buckle with the Jumble “J”, and there’s an audience cheering. There’s the Jeff Washington caricature, and he’s holding an artists pen in his hand. Nice, really nice. I thINK it’s ingenious! But to me, the best part of this cartoon? On the EDITORS desk, that tiny bust of a man? The ears? Those exaggerated jug ears? Alfred E Neuman all the way! Jeff, “PROJECTION Perfection”! PULITZER there, Dude! So, There you have it, Folks, Done! Or shall I say…OVER done! It is long…but I hope it’s not boring!
    Have a great day, Everyone! Go out and get yourself MAD…Then, ๐ŸŽถDon’t WORRY…Be Happy! ๐ŸŽถ -30 ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Hmm. Sorry, Angela. No Mac and Jennifer here. The editor at the desk is none other than MAD Magazine’s new editor and chief idiot, Bill Morrison. You may remember Bill’s Guest Jumbler spot with his alien character feeling alienated. The other two people are semi-generic Jumble characters, although the guy is based on the Comic Curmudgeon’s (joshreads.com) own Josh Frulinger . Who has become a regular in the Jumble. Both Josh and Bill are based in California. There you go.

      • Hi Jeff. Thank you so much for setting the STORY straight. But I hope at least my incorrect CHARACTERization made for an interesting READ. I have MAD MAGS piled up in every room, but I must admit, I’ve never looked at who’s EDITing. Maybe I will from now on. You’ve given me a wealth of information here, I appreciate it. And trust me, I’ve no problem being wrong today. Better than that Prize Fight puzzle from last year, that cost me a fortune in Lobster! I still take ISSUE with it every time my friends bring it up. They love to tease me about it…the PRESSures relentless and it still CLAWS at me. Thanks again, and a major, major tip of the cap on your drawing today. You’ve MAD skills, Sir!
        Have a good one! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป
PS: Tough loss for the Hoosiers last night. So close…๐Ÿ’”

  2. Using a SOCKET wrench to toss a SALAD is nearly as bizarre as finding a TULIP in the museum case with the rare FOSSIL.
I apologise for my sentence today but putting those four clue words into some kind of narrative was just not possible. Perhaps Paul will do better.
Clue words have all been used before and I had no problem with them but unlike Mike I had to write the circled letters out before the solution was evident. Great cartoon and great play on the word “ISSUES”
Thank you Mike for all the details you mentioned—I could not see many of them, but I wonder about the palm tree in the background? Or am I imagining things again?
Angela, Angela, Angela—i heard “Don’t worry, be happy” on my car radio yesterday, what a coincidence that you would mention it in your epic post. Perhaps Mike and you might have mentioned “it’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” along with the MAD magazine reference. At any rate both of you went above and beyond expectations this AM.
Sunny cold day here but I think it is warm enough, no breeze, for a brisk walk. Enjoy everyone.

    • Good morning, Earl! Donโ€™t apologize for your sentence because it was excellent. It was unique and a breath of fresh air to whatโ€™s expected.

Good eye on the palm trees! In my research, I noticed that Mr. Feldstein is almost always pictured wearing a โ€œHawaiianโ€ style shirt. There may be another term for that style but I think youโ€™ll understand what I mean. I did so many searches with word combinations for Feldstein, shirt, MAD etc but never landed upon solid evidence. I may be completely off track on it all and perhaps Jeff will clue us in.

Enjoy your walk and and talk soon. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Earl. Good afternoon. I hope you took your walk, because I just came in from a run, and it’s glorious out there! Chilly, but glorious! Let’s enjoy it while we can! The song. LOL…A close friend of mine, who often sleeps here, has it as his “wake up” sound. So just about EVERY morning I hear it at 4AM. Almost every single morning….Do I like the song? Very much…Does it make me as HAPPY as it used to? Meh…Enjoyed the “Mad World” movie, but I for one had enough MADness this morning to last me for a while! Thanks so much for the shout out, and today, your sentence made me really LOL…! Have a good one, Sir! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. Good morning. Will read everything later as I’m heading out to the dentist for a cleaning which I hate worse then doing a filling. Everything was an instant solve. After I got the words I double checked if the spelling was correct and I found out that I had Uplit and they also had Tulip. After looking at the cartoon I had the blind solve instantly. Knowing that there were two words for the second word, and having both three letters down on paper I started to cross out the letters to the answer and found out I tip toe’d into the correct one that was used. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • It feels like they gave us a breather after a tough start to the week. Good luck on your cleaning โ€” and I agree with you that they are no fun at all. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

    • If you use Uplit instead of Tulip, one solution might be A SIP OF LOUSES. Yuk. Maybe a bird would like that, but not me. Punishment for arguing with each other? Wordsmith does not recognize “uplit” but other sources say it is the past tense of “uplight” meaning to point a light upward, an unfortunate procedure which creates light pollution. And the usual plural of “louse” is “lice”, although a Google of “define: louses” says it is the plural of “louse”.

      • Bravo, Jim! You have a knack for finding alternative answers. Theyโ€™re always fun to read so please keep โ€˜em coming!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

  4. It looks like today’s Jumble has a puzzle in a puzzle, namely, what was the name of that magazine. Was it MADLY or MANLY? I note that all three copies of the magazine had a hand over that mysterious middle letter. Or (this is rather remote) maybe it’s MARLY – maybe a magazine about the Reggae star Bob Marley. Other letters don’t make words or sense. You say it is MADLY, but one can make a case for MANLY, which meant the magazine could resemble GQ or Playboy. And the two iconic magazines of the 1960s were Mad and Playboy.

    • Hi, Jim! Itโ€™s so nice to hear from you again. I did an EXTREME closeup of the pdf file and Iโ€™m sticking with MADLY. ๐Ÿ™‚
Jeff has been known to chime in now and again so maybe heโ€™ll solve the mystery. ๐Ÿ•ต๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  5. I am always impressed by all of the details that you notice in the cartoon, Mike!

Fairly easy puzzle today, but not a blind solve!

    • Thus proving that Iโ€™m the Yang to your Yin! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹

I did make a mistake by incorrectly identifying the editorโ€™s name in my post. Jeff provided the information to my oversight in todayโ€™s comments so I hope you get a chance to read. I made the correction and admit that I goofed!

Have a wonderful day, John! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

      • Mike, There’s no mistakes made here. Just unbridled enthusiasm, sometimes resulting in an oversight or two…As long as it’s fun…it’s all good, right, Bud? ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  6. Socket took me the longest to solve but the cartoon answer was already solved so it was nice to have an easy day. Great analysis as always, Mike. I always appreciate your observations. Have a good day all.

    • Hi, Betty, and my pleasure as always. Thanks for being a faithful visitor and always leaving a kind comment. Much appreciated. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

  7. No problems with the puzzle but I missed all the Mad references. Thanks for enlightening us, Mike.

  8. Hi – No ISSUES with the WORD salad or the answer today.
My first thought was also that the magazine said โ€œManlyโ€ which just seemed too odd, and it took the closeup of the desk copy to confirm it was โ€œMadlyโ€.

Ah, Mad magazine. Donโ€™t forget to fondly recall Madโ€™s Maddest artist Don Martin, potrzebie your axolotl and remember, โ€œIt’s crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide.โ€

    Have a great day!

    • My photo editor (free version) only allows me to combine two photos. I also noticed that on the desk copy.

Have a good one, Steve! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

    • Ah, Grasshopper! ROTFL…Because..”It’s insane to try and bribe a policeman with fake money”, isn’t it?….Only you! (And me)! ๐Ÿ˜‚ And Portzebie carries a lot of WEIGHT! So, MEASURE for MEASURE, Axoloti knows!! The cute little swimmer…
I applaud ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป you, Bud! Today, you’re the MAD MAN! Talk to you later….๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  9. Hi, all! Iโ€™m glad it was a quick solve since it was about “issues” with โ€œmadโ€ faces and grumpy dialog. SALAD, TULIP, & the answer came fast. I spent some extra seconds on SOCKET & FOSSIL. Loved your post, Mike, especially your briefly considering “ton” of issues. I say “ton of” a lot.

I enjoyed reading Mad Magazine many years ago & didnโ€™t know it was still around until Steve told me. It gave me “a lot of” laughs way back when.

I recently told my BFF, best friend forever since my Freshman year of High School in Yuma, about my struggle to gain weight. She was a nurse while I taught school. She has decided to email me recipes for fattening meals & snacks, all of which have been delicious so far.

Because my nurse friend has taken it upon herself to nurse me back to health, I have decided to cooperate by eating every time Iโ€™m hungry & sleep or take a nap when I feel tired rather than do โ€œjust one more choreโ€ or sneak in here to check out the Jumble comment section or type something to post, which I dearly love doing.

That is my lame excuse for being late today & for probably being tardy until I get a few pounds under my belt literally.

  10. Good evening. Thanks Mike for the extra pictures and comments. Interesting. I won’t be going to Atlantic City until next month. Another twelve days away. Angela, great job as always. Earl I bow to you. Not touching those words. Steve, coming back from the dentist I heard 40 miles of bad road (1959)by Duane Eddy on the 50s channel. Been a long time since I heard that gem. As always take care.

    • Hey Brooklyn, How’d it go? Still standing? Able to just BRUSH it off…?
Is it me, or does it feel so much colder out? I got in a while ago, and I’m freezing. That sun today made a world of difference…Thanks for the shout out, Paul. You know I appreciate it..
Take care, Bud. Talk to you later. ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Angela it’s cold. Yesterday we played four games. Two games with eight guys and then two games with six guys. It was the wind that made you cold. The sun was out but the wind was really blowing in all that open space. By the way the park lost 58 trees in that hurricane a few years back. When it’s a little warmer I’ll look for your heart? On Avenue U side. More than likely it went down in that group of trees. I walked around there after the incident and had no idea it was that many trees down.

        • I know, right? Really cold! I had driven over to my nephews house and back around 5:30 and just threw on a leather, and I was freezing. Big difference from earlier today. I was out running about 12:30, and even though it was cold, it didn’t feel like this. We didn’t have that much wind here today at all. Y’day, yes. I don’t know how you guys can play in the wind…You’re true lions at heart! You had an 8 man game going? That action sounds interesting…I had no idea that the park got hit by Sandy. I have cousins in Manhattan Beach, and they were destroyed. I went into B’klyn after the storm, and saw the Beach and Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island. It was terrible. Areas here on SI, looked like TV footage I’ve seen of Europe after the war. Everything completely gone I cried like a baby….Luckily, we were spared. I live more on the North Shore, near the college. CSI. We lost power for 5 days, but that was it. Sad about the park. So my trees may be gone, huh? Ah…youth! I’m going to go online and see if I can find any pictures. Glad your indoors…Stay warm, and have a great night, Brooklyn! Ciao! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป
