CARTOON ANSWER:

THE VET THAT SPECIALIZED IN TREATING WATERFOWL HAD A – – –

AEWIRANGAD = “WADING” AREA

Good morning everyone and happy Monday! Last week we saw some very easy puzzles (with the exception of Saturday’s “LOW-CATION” brain teaser). Waking up and finding a Monday puzzle with the answer in quotes had me excited as I really enjoy a very punny surprise answer.

All of today’s clue words were old favorites with EAGLE giving me a few extra seconds of hesitation. I thought it was ALGAE at first and couldn’t get that word out of my mind. Coincidentally, my page-a-day Jumble desk calendar also had EAGLE as an anagram in the first clue word position and it was jumbled as LEEGA. If you’re a sports fan, the Philadelphia Eagles delivered a crushing defeat to the Vikings yesterday so everything seems to be coming up EAGLEs! I wouldn’t make a Super Bowl bet off of all of this but it does give you something to think about.

Moving on to the cartoon, I attempted a blind solve of the answer but came up empty handed. Looking at the cartoon, we see a nurse in the background with a stethoscope around her neck and she’s glancing at a clipboard. Jeff had her wearing crocs footwear which was very interesting because as we all know that crocodiles and birds aren’t the best of friends.

Reading the dialogue, the nurse says “Donald, the doctor will see you now”. Looking back at the cartoon, we see a small duck in a pool wearing a sailors cap similar to the one that Donald Duck always wears. Nice touch, Jeff! Another great detail was the bird (egret?) that had a cast or bandage on its leg. The woman is telling the patient to be patient which was an excellent play on the word and made me quack up a bit!

The letter layout for the solve was very cryptic and kept the answer well hidden. Having spent so much time looking at all of the detail in Jeff’s drawing, the answer came immediately making this puzzle an instant finish. Have a marvelous Monday, my friends, and I’ll see you tomorrow.

  1. 🎶Splish, splash, I was takin’ a bath…Long about a Saturday night, yeah, A rub dub, just relaxin’ in the tub, thinkin’ everythin’ was alright…And then a-splish, splash…I jumped back in the bath. Well, how was I to know there was a party goin’ on?..🎶

🐧 🐧I had to laugh the minute I looked at this today
The words, the solve, the “Be patient “, just blew me right away…
You didn’t need an EAGLE eye to WHIRL right to the pun
The looks upon the waterfowls mugs? This one is really fun.
When I first went to Florida to to get a summer home
And Port St Lucie beckoned, where Mets are known to roam…
The AGENCY I dealt with would GLADLY let me look
At statues they had all around amongst their many books…
And I first saw an egret and the guy said “You can have her…”
That memory came flooding back when I saw the WADING AREA! 🐧🐧

Not easy rhyming area…but easy getting today’s words. Return favorites.
FLYING over to our cartoon…So, the other day we had Geese..Today, DUCKS… Do you think the Guys were playing, DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE and were inspired? You know, BIRDS of a FEATHER? Hmm..Whatever! So, Donald the Duck in his little sailor hat, and Brigit, the egret with her wounded leg bandaged. A little hint of a SPLINT! Both their faces etched in pain. Great job here, Jeff. Can’t be easy to make a FOWL look FOUL! I’m still laughing at the expressions! Brigit’s owner telling her to be “patient” QUACKed me up too…Anyway, no reason to beat around the THRUSH..The VET had a”WADING” AREA! Trim my feathers and make me a pillow! How clever is that? Kudos, Dave! Ok, eye candy…The magazine…The BREEDing material…If you CRANE your neck a little…There’s a picture of a MALLARD…At least I think it’s a MALLARD…I could be all WET!
So, There you have it Folks, Done!
Have a great day, Everyone! And if you’ll be SURFing the WEB, BEAK careful. A lot of QUACKS out there..See you WADER! 🐧🙋🏻

  2. LOL..LIttle Penquins came out! I’m on 2 different versions, phone to iPad, and it turned into a penquin! I’ll try to fix it! Oh well, no harm, no FOWL! 🙋🏻

  3. The Mascot of the federal AGENCY, an EAGLE, GLADLY took a WHIRL around the perimeter of his building.
Great posts Mike and Angela. I also had no difficulty this morning, although when I looked at the first word, legal popped into my head. The solution I was able to do sans pen or pencil. Having EAGLE as one of the scrambled words must have given joy to fans of the Eagles who certainly soared to the Super Bowl.
I also noticed the great cap on the duck patient–great touch in a great cartoon.
Volunteer day for me, I’ll check in later. ☔️ ⛈

    • Good Morning, Earl. Thank you. And yes, the Eagles 🦅 certainly did SOAR to that win! Good one! Talk to you later! 🦆🙋🏻

    • 🎵”I want to fly like an eagle, to the sea
Fly like an eagle, Let my spirit carry me
I want to fly like an eagle, till I’m free
      Fly right into the future
Feed the babies Who don’t get enough to eat
Shoe the children with no shoes on their feet
House the people Living in the street
      Oh, oh, there’s a solution”🎵 – Steve Miller Band

      • Reminds me of some other great eagle lyrics:
🎵Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles cry on a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the worlds we know
Up where the clear winds blow🎵

      • And I appreciate so much you sharing your vast knowledge of music with us, Steve. Recently heard the songwriter Buffy Sainte- Marie on public radio and she sounded just the same, though she was talking, not singing.

        • Thanks Caroline, but as I may have said before, I know so many people with so much more knowledge of music that I could only consider mine at most half-vast. I just started listening to the radio in the mid-50’s, loved it, and never stopped until around the mid-90’s.
Wow, nice to know that Buffy Sainte-Marie is still around! Would that have been on Terry Gross’ “Fresh Air” program? I first heard of her when Glen Campbell uncharacteristicly covered her “Universal Soldier”, and they used one of her tracks in the odd Mick Jagger movie “Performance.”

      • “Half-vast”- so funny. You know more about music than anyone I know so it seems vast to me.
I can’t remember which show Buffy was on but it wasn’t Gross’s. Buffy has a new album out, so she’s gotten a lot of coverage lately. I didn’t know Glen Campbell covered Universal Soldier. That surprises me, too.

        • I didn’t know about the new album! A perfect example of exactly what I was talking about when you post things I don’t know, thanks.

      • I tried to find a site for the show I heard but couldn’t. Maybe it was a long news segment.

      • Thanks very much, Angela. I just noticed your reference to this message on IOW. I look forward to listening, though it’s not the same interview I heard on NPR recently. I really like Buffy but hadn’t seen anything about her for years.

        • Hi Caroline. You’re very welcome. I’m glad it’s not the same one; hopefully it’ll give you some additional informatiion. I think it’s a gold mine when we can find an informative article with audio included. She was pretty low key for a while, but now with the new album, “Medicine Songs”, she’s back out there. Too bad her tour seems to be all in England. That would have been a great treat for you! She’ll be 77 next month, how amazing is that?! I say…”Go, Girl”!
Hope you enjoy it! Be well. 🎶🙋🏻

    • ROTFL…Jeez! Good one! But let’s not go crazy here! I gave him his props last night, I won’t blaspheme! 😅 I fixed that baby right up! You have a super one too, Bud! 🙋🏻

  4. Good morning. You can usually count on Monday to redeem yourself from a possible weekend failure and in this case it didn’t fail. For me it was not as easy as last Monday but close. It just took an extra couple of minutes to solve. Looking at the letters gave me the answer to the cartoon rather quick. Darn if you look close at the duck the guy has his hand on I’d swear it’s a Long Island duck. Even in Brooklyn we can buy L.I. ducks in the meat market. Maybe it’s me,I could be all fowled up. Anyway, until tomorrow stay well Oh,thanks for the extra info Mike and Angela nice job and it did come to mind about Marine park for you Angela. A lady never tells unless shes a writer and then it’s worth it. Just ask Jackie Collins.

    • Hi, Paul! I’m happy to hear that the word in quotes didn’t throw you off. I was very excited to see a Monday puzzle with a word in quotes because it can either be super difficult or a breeze. This one was only challenging if you raced through the clue words and didn’t pay attention to the detail of the cartoon. Definitely a Monday surprise. Take care, my friend. 😎👍🏻

    • Good Morning, Paul. LOL..You never fail to start me laughing! Maybe we shouldn’t touch the LI ducks in Brooklyn thing…We don’t want a repeat of those Canadian Geese again! 😂 Let’s just let sleeping FOWL lie! Marine Park..(Sigh)..It’ll be our secret! We’ll talk! But if you get a chance? The Avenue U side? Check some of those trees! My initials may still be there! 😉 Have a great day, Brooklyn! 🦆🙋🏻

  5. I did not fall victim to “Quotation Trepidation” this morning. Had a blind solve and only a brief pause in agency.

    Have a great day, all.

  6. No tough ones for me today. Just this past week I heard a beautiful rendition of the African American spiritual, “Wade in the Water,” which has been associated with the Underground Railroad.
Love the writing in the sand, Mike.

    • Caroline. Good Morning. I listened to it this morning looking for the song choice. It immediately came to mind. So beautiful. But not made for this silliness, right? Hope you have a great day! 🙋🏻

    • I’ve never heard that, Caroline. I’ll have to do a Youtube search for it.
I’m glad you enjoyed the sand writing. The page didn’t pop that much so I knew it was time for an upgrade. Would you like to see a graphic every day? It might make the site more fun to look at… 🤔

  7. I cannot make out what the magazine cover is on my online site. Is it legible in the newspaper?

  8. Easy one today in spite of the quotation marks. Since I struggled so with hiatus yesterday it was good to breeze right through the clue words and cartoon today. I like the writing in the sand and shades, Mike. Me thinks you’re transporting yourself vicariously to a warmer climate than the East coast. Have a good day everyone.

    • Glad you found that it was an easy solve, Betty! Kudos for finishing it so quickly.

Even though it’s cold and there’s still snow on the ground, the beach is my home and I just can’t stay away. I wish it was warmer but it gives me something to look forward too. ☀️🐚🕶🌊🏖

      • Mike when my wife was in rehab out in Long Island because of a stroke I stayed at number three sons house for 4-6 weeks to be closer to her. Every Sunday my son and I would go to church and the after picking up breakfast we would go to the shore and watch the boats come in and out. Very relaxing. My son loves going there with the grandkids.

        • Hey Paul. Beautiful sentiment. I know it’s bittersweet for you. A lot of our best memories are…
We have family out on the Island, too. A lot. Wantagh, Islip, Commack, Dix Hills, Northport, Centereach, Smithtown, they’re all over! I’m always out there.
But we spend at least a week every year out at Montauk. Feels like being in another world. So pretty and peaceful there. And all the beautiful wineries at North and South Fork. People don’t know how beautiful New York really is, right? Unfortunately, it’s only seen as what’s portrayed on TV and in the movies. The grit and the crime…Hope you’re having a good night, Brooklyn. 🙋🏻

        • It never gets old, Paul. It’s truly relaxing just watching the boats go by and the waves lapping the shoreline. I’ve spent many mornings watching the sun rise out over the water and setting on the other side in the harbor. 🙂

  9. Hi all – I love these puns. The only question was whether it was going to be “pool” or “area.” “Donald” and “patient”, very funny. I’ve heard of a sign posted at a vet’s office that said “The doctor will return at 1PM. Sit! Stay!”

If you’re careful with your web surfing and use the non-tracking site “Duckduckgo” to scan the marshes, you may run into the Tom RUSH song “No EGRETS, no tears goodbye..”

Sun just came out after a rainy night. Have a great day!

    • ROTFL…🎶No regrets, no tears…🎶 Never entered my mind…! It would have been good…And to think I was trying to concentrate on the WAH DER..and the duck! With the egret statue still sitting in my den…And there’s a lot of cover on that song too..I think I’ll listen to it right now…The Vet my nephew brings the dog to has the sign posted,,,No matter how many times you read it, you LOL..Talk to you later, Bud. 🙋🏻

      • There are certainly worse ways to spend three minutes or so than listening to that beautiful song. Always been one of my favorites, along with the gorgeous guitar instrumental “Rockport Sunday”. 🙋🏻‍♂️

        • Still lounging around. One of those days that follow those long nights…Not Tom Rush that’s in my head tho…someone else’s cover…I’m looking…🙋🏻

        • Grasshopper…That 3 minutes..?? LOL. I need to catalogue all these a little better! Like we did those 78’s from my Father! Good thing it’s a lazy down-day anyway. (And that he’s got a lot more patience than me)! We piled ’em on the bed and just searched! There were 2. Shirley Bassey and Waylon Jennings! Try making that connection! 😉 Vote goes to the Jennings version. But no matter who sang it, it would have never captured the “whimsy” of the cartoon today! So no rEGRETs for going with Darin! 😂 Rockport Sunday? We looked…and looked. Not here. But Lou3 said that when my brother played guitar years ago in local clubs, it was part of his session. That I don’t remember at all! Guess we know where that one ended up…
          All in all, a Memory Lane Day!..(.No, I said Memory..not Penny)!! 😂🙋🏻

  10. Hi, all! What a pleasant puzzle today! It was a quick & easy Monday solve, and the cartoon drawing was fun to look at.

Thanks, Mike, for the Donald Duck hat which I missed and the enlargement of the magazine cover. Whatever would we do without you, your help with the Jumble, and your cheerful comments? Thanks much!!

I’m off to do some shopping and will be thinking of all the fun, happy talk with my Jumble friends yesterday before Jerry & I settled down to watch the Pats & Eagles.

Yes, Steve, it is quite nippy out there so I will wear a jacket and “button up.” Same to you, my friend.

      • Mike, I know you could never leave your wonderful beach home, but if you ever VISIT Arizona, don’t forget to pack those sun glasses you’re wearing in your icon or whatever you call it. LOL See ya’ tomorrow!

    • Hi Lelia – Glad to hear you’re staying warm. I’ll leave you a note on IOW later about the extra strength flu shots, but I have to do some shopping first also.

      • Hi, Steve, I just went up and down all 42 comments on IOW twice and did not find one from you to me. It is 6 p.m. here.

Busy day because Jerry announced first thing this morning that he had tremendous Diverticulitis pain. Of course, I fixed my own breakfast and took care of him until the pain finally subsided this afternoon.

I didn’t go shopping because of not wanting to leave him in pain so got a lot of chores done around here. When he fell asleep in his recliner at 2 pm, I ate a bowl of chili and took a 2½ hour nap myself. Then I ate a piece of whole grain bread, heavily buttered & covered with peanut butter, trying to get those calories in me, and rushed to my computer to see what you had to tell me. I’ll leave a note on IOW now.

        • Sorry, Lelia, after shopping, one thing led to another, and I want to take the time to say it right.
The short version is that the extra strength was too strong for me so I went back to the regular version. Like you said, I’ve got until next September to post it!

  11. Did anyone else notice that the man sitting next to “Donald” looks like Walt Disney?!?! How did I overlook that this morning… 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

    • Good eye, Mike. I looked at him for a while too, and thought he looked rather European and kind of old fashioned if that’s the correct term. Not one of Jeff’s “usual” faces. Disney didn’t hit me at all. And guess what? “Someone else” saw the resemblance too! 😉 😉 Good one! 🙋🏻
