CARTOON ANSWER:
SHE KEPT HER GLOVES BY THE DOOR SO THEY WOULD BE – – –
AADCNSTHEOL = CLOSE AT HAND
Good morning everyone and happy Wednesday! The first three clue words came instantly into view leaving me to struggle a bit with ENROLL. In the back of my mind I kept thinking that I’ve seen this clue word before but it just wouldn’t come to me. It finally popped into mind on my second cup of coffee and I was ready and determined to swiftly finish the puzzle.
Looking at the cartoon, we see a woman near an open door with the wind blowing in at her back. She appears to have forgotten her gloves as she was either coming in or leaving to take her dog for a walk. If you think about it, she was most likely leaving but a case could be argued that she was just coming home or quickly came back after forgetting them. Either way, the cartoon was pretty basic with only two details worth noting. Jeff did a great job with the woman’s reflection in the mirror, and you could make out the faint outline of her hand, face, and the collar of her coat. The second detail would be the little jacket on the dog. I’ve tried to put one my 7 pound Dachshund but he kept nipping at it during the whole walk. It wasn’t worth the headache so he’s been walking au naturel ever since.
The solve was a bit tricky for me and I tried to attack the 2-letter word first. There were several options such as ON, AT, TO and DO. With nothing coming to mind, I somehow saw HAND and crossed out the letters. CLOSE came next leaving AT for the finish. It wasn’t the swift finish I had hoped for, but a solve is a solve and I’ll happily try and redeem myself tomorrow.
Just a reminder that you can sign up for my daily email to be among the first to receive the answers directly in your mailbox. The link is at the top right of your screen and we’re closing in on 1,000 subscribers. Have a wonderful Wednesday and I’ll see you tomorrow! ๐
Good morning, Mike. Great post. And Kudos on the numbers! ๐๐ป๐๐ป
Thank you!!!
๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป You’re welcome, Bud! I gotta HAND it to ya, you deserve to reach the mark! ๐๐ป
Good morning, Mike. Couldn’t quite Put my fingers on it (only kidding). Easy solve. Have a good day.
I had an off day with the solve. Iโll blame it on the overcast weather. Have a great day, Moose! ๐
Enroll kind of stumped me as well, but after roll came into view, enroll soon followed. At hand came quickly in the solution, closely followed by close.
Great job with the solve, Chuck! Much better job than me. ๐๐๐ป
Good Morning, Chuck. Do I detect a bit of a play on words here? “CLOSEly followed by CLOSE”? Are you becoming SMITTEN too? You done good, as we say in Brooklyn! Before you know it, you’re going to gLOVE doing this! Glad you stopped by. Ciao! ๐๐ป๐๐ป
๐ถFor every heart, there’s a moment, For every HAND, a GLOVE..
And for every woman, a man to love…Where is she, where is the one for me?๐ถ
๐๐ป๐๐ป Today’s SKETCH shows a woman dressed warmly for outdoors
I liked the coat and hat at first, but wait I’ll tell you more…
The door is opened widely, CHURNing the wind about
I like Jeff’s use of swirling lines to bring the feature out.
I’ve often thought that people of a certain age as she
Should be AWARDed medals in this weather that we see
To walk out in the snow and ice, to leave a cozy bed
I wish they could ENROLL someone to do the chore instead
But bundled up and ready, her dog looks ready too
She reaches for her gloves…Oh, and what I wanted to tell you?
The hat and coat are black. The rest though? What a hoot!
It’s purple, Folks! It’s purple…The trim, the pants, the boots!
I cannot help but wonder, where in this great big land
So much of purple clothes are sold…and it’s so “CLOSE AT HAND”! ๐๐ป๐๐ป
Great words today, I’m wondering if CHURN ever BLEW about before. Not a word we often hear. The others? Old favorites. On to our adorable cartoon. I have to HAND it to you Jumble Guys, it’s a cutie!! We see a woman, dressed warmly from head to toe, about to walk her dog. And how cute is his little gold sweater? Of course I’m PAWSing, noticing that his tiny feet aren’t covered. Here in the city, so many different kinds of ice melting salt is thrown, the dogs sometimes hurt their PAWS. When I had my Sinatra, (BMH), we had a tract at the side of the house for him to use in bad weather. Trust me, neither he nor I wanted to go trudging through the snow! So we see that the woman keeps her gloves by the door. And what a good idea!..Like the American Express Card, she won’t leave home without them…! So, the door is open, not CLOSEd, the wind is blowing, (again, nice detail Jeff), and she’s reaching for the GLOVES to put on her HANDS…The GLOVES are “CLOSE AT HAND”! Kudos, Dave, another PERFECT FIT! Good pun! Ok, eye candy…There’s the woman’s faint reflection in the mirror. No, it’s kind of HARD to SEE. But, the colors I mentioned earlier? The black and purple? Well, the gloves are WHITE! Trim and all! I don’t get it either, but I’m SMITTEN!
So, there you have it, Folks! Done!
Have a great day, Everyone! And remember…๐ถgLOVE is all you need…๐ถ๐๐ป๐๐ป
GloveLY post. Have a great day, Angela!
Thanks, Bud. LOL! Good one!
I’ll have to remember it, it may come in HANDY with the Board.
Wishing you the same…๐๐ป๐๐ป
I would say she is going out because Cesar Millan says the dog must NOT precede the owner through the door and the dog seems to be waiting. I was very lucky today and solved the puzzle w/. CWs. A rarity for me
Harry: Maybe somebody was WHISPERING in your ear….๐๐ป๐๐ป
I sometimes hear voices, is that the same thing?
LOL..I was going for the “Dog Whisperer”, but what the heck!
I hear voices too, but it’s usually just the Ice Cream calling my name.๐ฃ
They’ve never given me a Jumble clue…Have a good day, Harry…๐ฃ๐๐ป
Good morning. I’ll make this short and sweet. I’m now going over the Verrazano bridge to Atlantic City. Let’s hope I have some luck today. Today’s jumble was a snap. If I didn’t know what day it is I’d swear it was Monday. Both ends of the puzzle was that quick. Until tomorrow stay well.
Have fun and good luck in AC! I asked yesterday when you were going and now I know. ๐
I hope you have some fun stories for us when you return!
My stomach began to CHURN when I chose to ENROLL in the AWARD-winning improv SKETCH cast.
Easy solve today and for a Wednesday puzzle, I was surprised at not having to write anything down. Great comments Mike and Angela and congratulations on the numbe of subscribers. I am sitting in the waiting room of my car dealer– having a new master ignition key made–ouch!
Have a happy hump day everyone. โ๏ธ โ๏ธ
Good morning, Earl. Thank you. Good imagery.
And good luck!๐๐ป๐๐ป
Thanks, Earl! Did you lose your key? Weโre down to one fob after the other one stopped working. Good luck!
No, both master keys still worked but I dropped one on the concrete drive and it split apart, the other was very wobbly and I did not want to have it break off in the ignition. Better to spend the bucks to prevent a bigger bill. At least that’s my logic.
Thanks for the good luck wishes.
Youโre welcome. I still have the valet key which will work but Iโm scared of the price tag to replace the defunct fob. Come to think of it, I can probably talk my wife into a new car when doomsday arrives! ๐คฉ
I had a blind solve on the the puzzle, but finally had to come here for enroll. It just wouldnโt come to me today. First time that I have thrown in the towel on Jumble. Iโll get over it!
Like others, I stumbled with enroll. No problem with the other clue words and I figured out the cartoon answer so worked backwards again. Have a Happy Wednesday everyone.
Hi Betty. How’re you? Are you affected by this new rash of fires? I feel for you all out there. Be well. ๐๐ป
Hi All – I had to back into enroll and use my pad, too. The dog looks like a Chihuahua to me. Like you, Mike, my dog didn’t want to wear anything – except his collar.
Hi all – No problem with the words or answer except a pause at ENROLL.
What I noticed about the picture was what wasnโt there. This poor woman needs a mud room or a subscription to a carpet cleaning service.
Have a great day everyone, and for those who think Christmas comes too early, there are places where youโve already missed it!:
Christmas in The Netherlands / Holland ๐ณ๐ฑ
๏ฟผโFor most children in The Netherlands, the most important day during December is 5th December, when Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) brings them their presents!
St. Nicholas’ day is on the 6th December, but in The Netherlands, the major celebrations are held on the 5th December. The name Santa Claus comes from the name Sinterklaas.โ
Hey Steve. Today is a big day in Italy. They have special cakes and cookies that are made just for today, and a lot of celebrations are held…When my Father was still here we celebrated it too. And we’d each get one gift. Sort of like a trial run…๐
It was a nice tradition. ๐ ๐ป๐๐ป
Nice! Thanks for the info! ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
My wife always got a traditional Dutch chocolate letter from her family (first initial). I knew Iโd been accepted when I got one too.
The chocolate? At Christmas time, or today? We celebrate Christmas until the Epiphany. We call it Little Christmas on January 6th. We have another huge celebration…(Read food…for a change of pace)! And we exchange gifts again. And then the trees come down and it’s over. That’s the European way, and everyone I know that’s Italian still keeps that tradition. I know a lot of people tho who end the Holiday right after New Years. It’s a lonnnnnggg Holiday, but it’s such a great one. And you’re right. The chocolate sealed the deal! LOL…๐ซ๐๐ป
Dec. 5th in Holland, Dec. 24 in Canada and here. ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
I say there’s never a bad time for Chocolate…After all, it is one of the 5 Food Groups, right???? Vegetables, Fruit, Chocolate…I forget the other two…๐ซ๐๐ป
Angela, you addressed your comment to Steve, but I know he wonโt mind if I add my thanks to you for sharing facts with us about Christmas in Italy and sweet memories of your family traditions.
Of course not, Lelia. We’ve no privacy here!
Wait until I tell you what Christmas Eve is like! Not matter how old I become, it still holds all its wonder! And I still believe in Santa, and I don’t care who knows it! ๐๐ ๐ป
Speaking for myself, I donโt mind who jumps in where because I learn so much from everyone.
…and to those for whom the seasons canโt be rushed *enough*, I just got back from Safeway, where they were playing โAuld Lang Syneโ!
Hi, all! Being determined to get the word HAND into the solve, my first thought was โHandy to grabโ and then โQuick at hand.โ Solved the clue words and found the answer CLOSE AT HAND.
I get to be in the ENROLL club, too, because I had to self-jumble it once. The first thing I wrote was ROLLEN, which I easily changed to ENROLL. Done!
Thank you again, Mike, for teaching us to self-jumble. It really works!
Thank you, Steve, for teaching us about Christmas in Holland. That brings back memories of when I read a book to my students about Christmas in other countries, including Holland. The book was big with beautiful, brightly colored pictures.
With our temp in the low 70โs this week, I have had to drag out my flannel P.Jโs. Keep your fingers crossed that I donโt freeze tomorrow at 69 degrees. I should be ashamed of myself for joking like that while some of you are suffering with snow, wind, rain, and sleet, like I grew up with and walked a mile to school in.
Come to think of it, that probably explains why my wifeโs family always celebrated, including gift exchanges, on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day.
She also gave in this week and started wearing her longjohns with our highs around 60 and lows around 44. (Too Much Information?)
70โs sound so nice right about now, Lelia. Stay warm! ๐๐๐
Good afternoon. Just took a break for now. I’m up $55 from being down almost a $100. Mile, growing up besides the many dogs we had we had two Dachshunds at different times in between German shepherds. I loved those little guys. They were my favorite dogs. Can’t decide to try the slots again or eat. What to do,what to do. I’ll try to get back after I’m heading back to Brooklyn. “For you Angela”. Peace out baby. !!!
LOL…Thank you, Paul. Brooklyn’s ALWAYS in the House!
I’ll wait up for you! ๐ Good luck! ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐๐ป
You probably wonโt believe this, Paul, but my favorite number is 55, and I had a German Shepherd before my Dachshunds. Might be time to head over to the roulette table! ๐๐๐
ROTFL….And if he drops that $55? We’re talking Brooklyn here! ๐๐๐๐ป
Mike at this casino (Resorts)there isn’t enough young people for more tables. One dice table and roulette table most of the time. Sometimes they are even empty. The older people play the slots. Believe it or not the biggest money maker by far is the penny slot machine. It doubles most games. I watched roulette wheel for maybe an hour and a half picking numbers and all that time I would have only hit once. Just don’t have the vibe. Gotta have that mojo feeling. Don’t have it there. Played “let it ride” with another guy a dropped a hundred. But I had a good time. Steve back in the late fifties early sixties my first job out of high school was a Safeway store. 94th Street and 3rd Avenue Bayridge Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Dodger players would go shopping there and get their haircuts across the street before they packed up and went to Lala land. Being of German dissent we always opened our presents Christmas Eve and had to have herring for the new year for luck.
Hi Paul, very interesting that you had Safeway back then in NY. I donโt remember any in Rhode Island or even seeing any until I got to CA.
Jeez, tell me about the herring! Apparently its a big honor to be the first fisherman to run up from the docks when the season opens and present his raw herring to the Queen of the Netherlands which she swishes through a bowl of chopped raw onions and eats. Yummy! ๐ซ I would rather abdicate.
Iโm glad you had a great time, Paul. When the vibe donโt jive, avoid betting on โ55โ! ๐๐๐
๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป!!! ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐
Thatโs Sammy Hagar advice – ๐ตโI canโt drive 55!๐ต
Does throwing 5-5 have a name, like snake-eyes? Alien-eyes?
Itโs called puppy paws!

….And this from the two men who SWEAR they don’t gamble!
What’re the ODDS? ๐๐๐ป
Thatโs why I asked ๐ Only knew the basics. I thought โFly-Eyesโ might be appropriate. ๐๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
Hey. We got FORESTS, we got TREES,..We got gamblers…
1-3, 3-1…What’s a 412???? Have you even had coffee yet? Want to try mine? Hmm…That’s a long PAWS! ๐๐ป
55?? Oh CRAP, I threw a HAGAR!
Hey Angela
๐ตโWhat do you say?โ
โI say – WOOF!โ
โDo you know any more?โ
โowwwwwooooooooooโ๐ต
I have to exercise my DOGS right now. โIโm walking, yes indeed, to Peetโs, to get caffeine, Iโm hoping I come back in one pieceโ ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
๐ถGive it to me, man, hurry! I’ve got ten children, HO! …๐ถ Love the line!!!
So listen, BULLDOG…I’m having a hard enough time keeping it on 7. This 6 is insane…and 55?? ๐๐ So this WAS all before Peet? You’ll be a force to be reckoned with today! Let’s let sleeping dogs lie, and the gamblers lie, and the fast food lie….and the golfers lie…etc! No mas, on 6, ok Grasshopper ?
PS: The Board would be proud! ๐๐๐ป
You should see Dave Grohl and Jeff Lynne perform this on youtube during the salute to The Beatles first performance on Ed Sullivan. Grohl calls it โthe quintessential Beatlesโ rockerโ and they do a good job.
Bulldog? I’ve never seen it. I’m going to SKATE over there and take a look…โธ๐๐ป
I heard โ *A* Tree Grows in Brooklynโ – I figured there was probably only one. ๐๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
Il tuo pattinaggio su ghiaccio sottile…..
(Give or take a preposition or a dangling participle)!
See if Wikipedia can help you with that! ๐
Only one, indeed! ๐ฒ๐๐ป
๐ตโI wish I had a river…โ๐ต Yup, everythingโs Joni. Google chrome translate came through, or I would have had to resort to the default translation, โSame to you, buddy!โ ๐
Iโll tell you something funny, though. To get the comments sent to my email everyday, I check the box โNotify comments in emailโ in my first post. That sends an email with a โconfirm followโ button. I press it, and a Chrome window opens to show the status of all my wordpress entries, but when it opens, thereโs always a bar at the bottom that says โThis page is in Polish. Do you want to translate?โ ๐๐ Itโs not, but wordpress must have an odd formatting character in there somewhere. ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
Joni, Joni, Joni. โค๏ธ
Only you! That’s too funny. I’ve had some quirky snags, but at least it’s all been in English! I’ve never seen that. Steve, I did only say that you were skating on thin ice. I hope so at least! You know my rep with the language! Did it translate as such? ๐ค๐๐ป
It translated as โYour thin ice skatingโ. Close enough!
Doubled Over.ROTFL….๐๐ Ah, my Grandmother would be so proud!!!!! ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐น
Technology has progressed so far that you can now have a robot kill the language for you! ๐๐๐ ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
LOL..Written , maybe. But the verbal..inflection, inflection…inflection…๐๐๐๐ป
BROOKLYN FOREST???? ๐๐๐ โForrests โ in Brooklyn?โ. (Thatโs a takeoff on a local ad for Berkeley farms dairy – โFarms in Berkeley?โ) Jesse James (from the Quiz)?
A 1-3 has a different name than a 3-1? WHO KNEW??? Not me. Amazing. ๐ฏ๐ฏ
Oh, WOW! With you and Paul talking dogs and gambling! What are the odds INDEED!
๐คช
Just getting to this one. It appears she only has three fingers and a thumb. Fortunately her glove has the same. I didn’t notice anyone else in the thread mentioning it but I could have missed it.
Hi Clay. You’re correct. All cartoon characters have only 3 fingers and a thumb
We’ve discussed it here before, so that’s why no one mentioned it. Good catch, though! You’ve got “the eye”! Here’s a link to an article about it. I hope you enjoy it!
Good to see you again. Be well. ๐๐ป
https://news.avclub.com/here-s-why-cartoon-characters-only-have-4-fingers-1798259730
Huh, never realized that. Thanks for the heads up and the video link. It ensures that I don’t point it out again. Pardon the joke!
LOL….Clay, you went for the Pun! Kudos, my man!
Pardon? Are you kidding me, it’s what we live for here!
And you’re quite welcome, Sir, anytime! Take care. ๐๐ป๐๐ป
