Good morning everyone and happy Tuesday! After such an easy puzzle yesterday, NIECE and UPBEAT gave me a bit of a challenge this morning. UPBEAT caused me the longest delay and would be my choice for the most difficult anagram.

After reading the dialogue and sentence, we learn that Jeff has drawn a panel of the fictional consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. Apparently Mr. Holmes has just solved a mystery for his friends and is discussing compensation for his services. With that information in mind, I’d like to focus a bit more on the overall solution than the cartoon itself.

Looking at the ultra-cryptic letter layout, I saw DISCOUNT immediately and thought that my sleuthing was done for the day. Adding the leftover letters of -ED to the end seemed logical but DISCOUNTED didn’t fit the sentence and DISCOUNTS was already used. Scratching my head, I jumbled the letters a few times on my notepad and worked a bit more until I found DEDUCT. The leftover letters were quickly placed at the end and my caper was solved!

I hope you had an easier solve than I did, as we don’t often have two words of 10-letters that seem to fit the sentence. Have a terrific Tuesday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

    I remember once referred to as being from Shakespeare
    But those of us considered true fans of filmdom’s foils
    Will recognize it as a line from Arthur Conan Doyle.
    With Sherlock Holmes, Detective, the SMOKER of the pipe
    And Dr Watson, joining him in cases true and hype
    They thrilled their readers, knowing the criminals they’d defeat
    Although their manners weren’t always very much UPBEAT
    Depicted here are actors Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone
    Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for what they become known
    I’d like to say the woman is Dr Watson’s NIECE
    But that would only make it easier to do this piece…
    So I’ll call her Mrs Hemmingswell, it’s what popped into my head..
    And ODDLY enough, the Elementary phrase was never really said!
    Just like the Shakespeare faux pas, this line is misconstruction
    But what is true is Sherlock was well known for his DEDUCTIONS! 🔍🔍

    I was doing eye candy. I was so taken with the woman’s Cameo. I have one that belonged to my Great Grandmother. Those beautiful etched profiles. So I got all excited thinking “Look at this..the great profile..Basil Rathbone”! But it sounded Odd. Hmm, a DILEMMA! So I looked it up. The Great Profile, John Barrymore! Close, but no cigar. Close, but no Calabash Pipe! But Mrs Hemmingswell is “DRESSED TO KILL”, and I love the period outfit. Anyway, today’s words? Elementary, my Dear Jumblers! No “SHERLOCK HOLMES BAFFLED” here! Ok, back to our cartoon. The “TRIUMPH OF SHERLOCK HOLMES”! I mean, The Triumph of Jeff! Wonderfully done! And the dialogue? “Analyzed”, “Minimum”? Coupled with Dave’s question: “Discounts”? …”DEDUCTIONS”, my Dear Watson! Great pun, Dave! I got it “WITHOUT A CLUE”! Ok, enough sleuthing for today. Let’s close this case. The eye candy? I like the smoke billowing from the pipe. I love the cup of tea. The dressing gowns are soooo late 1800’s London. I got really HAIRY over the mustache and the unibrows. And that kerosene lamp really lit me up, too. But you know I’ve already PINNED it down. It has to be the Cameo Brooch. Too bad it’s Watson who’s clad in green though, and not Mrs Hemmingswell. She would have been “THE WOMAN IN GREEN.
    Now that would have been Elementary!

  3. Good morning. The words were no problem for me today with niece taking just seconds more to get. Like Mike I had the same problem and idea as to its answer. It took a lot of rearranging to come up with the final word. Oddly enough,even though right this minute my Niece doesn’t feel that Upbeat because being a Smoker, she finally gave them up. In a short time her health will be greatly improved. The more I look at this the more I know you guys can do way better. But hey, I’ll stay with this one. Until tomorrow stay well.

  4. This one had me scratching my head today. Oddly took me the longest of the CWs, and my trouble with the surprise answer was similar to Mike’s. Finally deduced the solution, however!

  6. Paul—our minds are in sync today. Your sentence is close to what I came up with.
    No longer a SMOKER, my niece was very UPBEAT in helping others break the habit and ODDLY was not discouraged by their lack of success.
    I thought the clue words were easy and I did them mentally and then wrote down the circled letters. Had a hard time with the solution and went back to the clue words and realised that I had doubled the L in the first word instead of the D. Getting DOLLY instead of ODDLY. Once I self-corrected and studied the correct letters, the solution came fairly easily.
    Great post from Mike and Angela. Speaking of eye-candy: in the cartoon, I was disappointed that there was no pipe and no Sherlock Holmes type hat or jacket. Or am just imagining the film version of what he looked like?

    • Hi Earl. Thank you. There is a pipe in his right hand, and the smoke is billowing. I guess because they’re indoors, and they were indeed flat mates, they’re wearing their dressing gowns, as they were called. And having the afternoon tea. Perhaps EARL Grey…Very British, no? 😉🙋🏻

        You are correct about the tea time and the indoor setting excluding the usual Holmesian accoutremonts.
        Couldn’t find an appropriate emoji, so settled for those–I think Arthur Conan Doyle was into seances and spiritualism, right?

        • Jolly good, indeed! Originally, he was a doctor, but turned to writing when his practice didn’t fare well. He was a fascinating man, I think you’d enjoy reading about him. I did a paper on him in one of my journalism classes, and I was hooked. He was so many things. And yes, definitely into spiritualism, mysticism and the paranormal. And magic, he was also friends with Harry Houdini. Now those are two gentlemen I’d loved to have sat and had that afternoon tea with. Or maybe something a little stronger!! Accoutrements not withstanding!! IMO, he was way before his time.
          If you ever have the time, read up on him. The Anglophile in you will truly appreciate it!

      • I was a three pack a day “lucky Strike” smoker. Quit 35 years ago. Most difficult thing to do. But, well worth the effort. Now, I can’t stand the smell. A carton sold for $5.00.

  7. Hi, all! My cartoon solve was like yours, Mike, seeing “discount” immediately. Then in the letters I saw “SOUND EDICT” meaning “sensible statement.” Finally made the correct DEDUCTIONS to get the answer.

    I dedicate the word UPBEAT to you, Steve, with its musical meaning, but hope you and wife are feeling UPBEAT also.

    Mike and John, you are tremendously welcome for your enthusiastic thank-you’s for my late limerick. I should write more of those; I need the compliments.

    When younger, we had 2 Thanksgiving traditions. First was to find a widow to invite to our table, sometimes getting to use the same one for a few years. Second was to go around the table with everyone naming something they were thankful for before getting up to get our food off the stove & island.

  8. Hi all – despite the cartoon, SMOKER took the longest, followed by a quick rest note on the UPBEAT. Oddly enough, they’re not wearing smoking jackets.

    “A lemon tree, my dear Watson.” (Stolen directly from Monty Python).

    About the actor’s name, John Barrymore isn’t that much worse than what I once blurted out, “Rasil Bathbone”.

    • 🎶Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet…But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat…🎶 (Who sang it first)? No, not Monty Python…
      They wouldn’t be smoking jackets, because Watson’s not smoking. It’s said that Holmes was addicted to smoking. Watson, a causal cigar here and there. It’s afternoon tea time, so they donned their dressing gowns. You can look it up. Casual elegance, and acceptable dress, in the confines of their home. Steve, work with me here!
